Erica and Sen welcome Matt Leacock to talk about one of the hobby's staples - Pandemic. First published in 2008, the Pandemic system has been expanded and used to fight viruses, rising tides, Elder Gods, and now - the forces of evil that seek the One Ring. They talk all things Pandemic, from it's ideation to its many iterations, from fighting back chain reaction of diseases on Earth to fighting back hordes of orcs and other minions of Sauron in Middle Earth.

The upcoming release of “The Lord of the Rings: Fate of the Fellowship”, a cooperative tabletop game by Matt Leacock and Z-Man Games, brings the world of Middle-earth to life this June. Players will work together as heroes to protect Middle-earth's havens from advancing enemies while helping Frodo evade the Nazgûl on his journey […]
This game seems to come up again and again and it's for good reason. Pandemic is a classic games in line with the likes of Monopoly, Clue or Scrabble. Fight off diseases ravaging the world in an effort to save humanity. This game has inspired variants, legacy games and made cooperative games popular. It occurs to me that we didn't credit the game. It was designed by Matt Leacock and originally published by Z-Man games. Pandemic (BGG, Z-Man Games)
Yes, it's Meeplefest time once again, and the roundtable of luminaries is topped off with three designers: Matt Leacock, fresh from his KedJ win for Daybreak/eMission where he went up against HIMSELF with Ticket to Ride Legacy: Legends of the West and known for such titles as Pandemic and Forbidden Island Tom Lehmann, known for the classic Race for the Galaxy, and with new titles such as Winter Court and Chu Han and Joe Huber, lover of trick takers and designer of such titles as Caravan, Blue Skies, and Burger Joint. We spend some time talking about Matt's win, as well as design choices & the creative spark. And here's that Auden quote which Tom sent to me after the podcast: In his preface to The Collected Poetry of W. H. Auden (1945) he wrote: In the eyes of every author, I fancy, his past work falls into four classes. First, the pure rubbish which he regrets ever having conceived; second–for him the most painful– the good ideas which his incompetence or impatience prevented from coming to much (The Orators seems to me such a case of the fair notion fatally injured); third, the pieces he had nothing against except their lack of importance; these must inevitably form the bulk of any collection since, were he to limit it to the fourth class alone, to those poems for which he is honestly grateful, his volume would be too depressingly slim.

The climate crisis! That's a dour topic, isn't it? Today we're joined by Matteo Menapace and Matt Leacock to discuss Daybreak, their board game about world governments coming together to combat climate change. Along the way we discuss cardboard incentives, producing board games without plastic, and why optimism is necessary when thinking about big problems.

The Play to Win Podcast from Aconyte Books – Series 1: Everybody Wins by James Wallis
This is the Play to Win Podcast from Aconyte Books. This first series of the podcast accompanies the book Everybody Wins: Four Decades of the Greatest Board Games Ever Made by James Wallis. In this episode, James discusses party games, co-op games and more with Jenga creator Leslie Scott and Pandemic designer Matt Leacock.
In this episode, I am joined by author Amanda Bridgeman who resides in the land down under. She wrote the book Pandemic: Patient Zero. Yes, that is a tie-in book to the award winning Matt Leacock board game of the same name. She talks about how she got involved in the project, the woes that COVID caused, among other things. She also talk about how she judges a game by the cover. More accurately, how the artwork is what draws her to a game.Get the book here!
Can playing board games help us fix real-world problems? All around the world, people play board games for fun. But in recent years, a new generation of designers have been creating games with a social purpose - to enable understanding about complex problems like climate change, inequality and deforestation, and collaboratively design strategies to solve them. We look at how a group of researchers from Switzerland are creating custom-made board games that help resolve environmental disputes, led by Professor Claude Garcia from ETH Zurich and Bern University of Applied Sciences. Local farmers, businesspeople and government officials play their own roles in the games – which have helped them find compromises that protect the natural world in Indonesia and the Congo Basin. And in London, we also get a first-look at Daybreak, a new collaborative board game designed by Matteo Menapace and Matt Leacock, who designed Pandemic - a game that helped people understand the spread of coronavirus. In Daybreak, they've used the best scientific advice to design a game where you work together to try to stop climate change in its tracks. Alex Ortloff-Tang (not Matt Leacock!) joins the show to talk about taking lead design for the latest iteration of Pandemic - Star Wars: The Clone Wars. It's not just a money grab - there's a lot of love in this design! We apologize for the poor quality of Mark's half of the audio this week. We offer two possible explanations. One is that Walker, motivated as he is by spite and malice, engaged in an elaborate act of sabotage so as to undermine Mark in public. The other is that Mark (the editor, mind you) messed up the audio settings. I agree that the latter is too improbable, too conspiratorial, to take seriously--but we include it for the sake of comprehensiveness. In Season 3, Episode 5 of REPOD, we sat down with Matt Leacock, best known for creating the Pandemic series of cooperative board games. There are several expansions for Pandemic as well as the Pandemic Legacy games, which are stand alone versions of the game with an interwoven narrative that affects the rules and mechanics of the game as you play. The Pandemic and Pandemic Legacy games share many commonalities with escape rooms, including cooperative gameplay, cinematic narrative structure, and gameplay mechanics that tie in closely to the theme. It was fascinating to hear Matt describe his game design process and how he approaches it from a user experience design standpoint. There is a dialogue between the theme and game mechanics where they impact each other iteratively. Pandemic Legacy is one of David's favorite board games, and if you love escape rooms, we think you'll love this game too. This episode takes a look at Matt Leacock's Trilogy of Fobidden Games: Forbidden Island, Forbidden Desert, and Forbidden Sky. Each builds on its predecessors, has its own merits, but all are great fun for a lunch hour. 3D Desert Storm Tile Variable Island Layouts (I can no longer find the desert ones, and I lost my file of them when my external hard drive took a nose dive off my desk thanks to the chaotic kitten.) --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/adam-f-collins/support

How do board games encourage players to explore ideas, politics and morals? We meet Matt Leacock, designer of the game Pandemic, which has been used at medical schools to encourage co-operation, communication and strategy for trainees. Reiner Knizia, designer of 700 board games, talks about how making a game out of tasks can change players' behaviour in daily life. We explore the rise of a new generation of games where players collaborate, rather than oppose each other, in titles that deal with politics, hip-hop, ecology, employment, climate change and more. Quintin Smith from Shut Up & Sit Down discusses new trends in design, while Michelle Browne, designer of World of Work, tells us about the game that explores employment and social benefits.
