We celebrate Burns Day on Out of Doors on the 265th anniversary of his birth. Mark chats to Professor Fiona Stafford from University of Oxford who writes about Burns ‘the bard of nature'. They chat about his understanding of ecology and how that comes through in his poetry.Rachel hears the good news story about Goldeneye Ducks in the Cairngorms. Goldeneyes are a protected species that have suffered severe population declines, with only around 200 pairs in the UK. But recent work has seen their numbers increase. The team at the Robert Burns Ellisland Trust was awarded funding last year which has allowed them to make plans to secure the property's future. We hear about what they've got in store.There are ambitious plans to completely transform a former opencast mine site at St Ninians in Fife. The land was purchased by community interest company National Pride over three years ago. Mark met chair of the company, Irene Bisset, at the site to hear about their hopes to create a facility that enables visitors to enjoy being close to the natural world.And we delve into the archive to hear a piece from 2020 where Mark and Euan visited the famous Globe Inn in Dumfries, a pub frequented by Burns after his move to Ellisland in 1788.

This is from our friends at Study Finds. Here's a headline. "Why exercising at night  may be best for health. 61% lower risk of death from any cause!" They start out by talking about how, and we've all learned this... if you just exercise, It's good for you. Just do it. Any exercise is good. But... now there's a study about... if you're gonna exercise for maximum health potential, what time of day?? It's a pretty big study from the University of Sydney. 30,000 participants... they did moderate to vigorous physical activity. The 30,000 people were studied over an eight year time-frame... the exercising at different times of the day... and there was a pattern to the healthier outcomes. There was a certain time of day when people with the healthiest outcomes did their exercise. Evening. Evening people seem to get the most out of their exercise. 61% lower risk of death from any cause! That's pretty great. If you're an exerciser and you're able to exercise in the evening, you're going to get more out of it according to this study. Now, if you're exercising in the morning or afternoon, it's not like it's bad for you. And please consult your physician. So why is exercising at night or in the evening better? The current conflict in Lebanon has forced thousands of women and children in refugee camps to once again leave their homes for their own safety. Now she's publishing a collection of 22 poems called Getting It Off My Chest. Scottish actor Thomas Doherty (Gossip Girl, Descendants, Dandelion) isn't hungry in America. But the Brooklyn-based film and TV star says he's famished in Scotland, where artificial dyes and chemicals are banned from food products. Doherty went to a 900-year-old high school in Scotland, so he loves the fresh energy that a young country like the United States offers. But he's not a fan of American food, and misses the strict UK food regulations, saying he pretty much lost his appetite since moving to the States. What he does love is haggis. But Scotland's national dish is outlawed in the U.S.! Scottish food historian Paul Gilchrist joins the show to talk about the ban and tells you everything you'd ever want to know about haggis.
