Christmas has been and gone, it's roast dinner farts lingering like slush on the street as we pitch towards New Year's Eve, and our extended festive holiday in New York draws to an end with “Ghostbusters II”. A film in which Nancy Spungen predicts the end of days; Bill Murray seeks psychiatric help from his own brother; and, once more, New York is portrayed as a festering hotbed of aggression, with a toxic sludge running beneath its streets. Much like the subject of our previous episode - “Ghostbusters II” came too late to ride the seismic wave of popularity the original generated. Unlike “Gremlins 2”, however, it doesn't particularly offer anything new, with many noting the similar story beats to the first film. Oddly for a tale about negative emotions feeding supernatural events, it's also softer and less cynical in its outlook, presumably part of efforts to aim it more for the kids who had unexpectedly embraced the original. For those of us young enough, it still holds an affectionate place in our hearts as we finally got more “proper” Ghostbusters, but, as far as the studio was concerned, this failed to catch the lightning a second time, and any further talk of sequels were shelved for nearly thirty years. Whist not a patch on the original, but with interesting moments, good gags, exemplary effects and great additions to an already perfect cast, “Ghostbusters II” doesn't deserve the poor reputation it's had over the years. Watch (or re-watch) to avoid spoilers and join us.

Pushing the door open, Marie's eyes were met with a scene she would never forget. There, slumped in his chair, was Joseph Bowne Elwell. His usually composed demeanor was replaced by a haunting stillness. A single bullet wound, precise and deadly, marred the center of his forehead. Blood had pooled around the wound, seeping into the intricate patterns of the Persian rug below.   The room was eerily quiet, the silence only broken by the faint tick of the grandfather clock in the corner. The ornate decorations and lavish furnishings seemed out of place with the stark reality of the violent act that had taken place. Marie Larsen stood frozen, her mind racing to comprehend the horror before her. Joseph Bowne Elwell was no ordinary man. At forty-four, he had climbed the social ladder, amassing a fortune that would make most men green with envy. With just his sharp mind, impeccable taste, and the gentlemanly manners his mother instilled in him, he built an empire. By the time the bullet found its mark, Elwell owned $500,000 in real estate, $100,000 in personal property, a stable of twenty thoroughbreds racing at Latonia, a yacht in Palm Beach for the winter, five automobiles, and a swanky house on 70th Street.  So who killed the famous bridge expert and playboy?   Did anyone?Find out on today's episode of Kinda Murdery! Sources: https://classic.esquire.com/article/1950/10/1/who-killed-joe-elwellhttps://www.bridgebum.com/joseph_bowne_elwell.phphttps://mru.ink/the-unsolved-locked-room-murder-of-joe-elwell-1920/Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/kinda-murdery--5496890/support.

Have you ever thought the timeless tradition of card games could reveal profound cultural stories?  Well, today's episode was nothing short of a treat as I sit down with the insightful and engaging Lamont Jones, a boxing business attorney and the Author of  the critically acclaimed book, "The Gist of Bid Whist: The Culturally-Rich Card Game from Black America."Lamont's passion for Bid Whist shone through as he recounted his own introduction to the game during law school, a time when he was blissfully unaware of its rich cultural roots and strategic complexity. We laughed about the game's reputation as an "old folks game," but as Lamont peeled back the layers, it became clear that Bid Whist is a game that transcends age and time, offering a blend of strategy, social interaction, and cultural heritage.Throughout our conversation, we delved into the nuances of Bid Whist, comparing and contrasting it with the more commonly known game of Spades. Lamont expertly explained the "knockout factor" of Bid Whist, where, much like in boxing, any hand could dramatically turn the tables and secure a win, regardless of the score. This element of unpredictability and excitement is just one of the many reasons Lamont champions Bid Whist as a superior card game. The historical significance of the Pullman Porters was a focal point of our discussion, as Lamont detailed how these respected figures in the African-American community helped spread Bid Whist across the nation. The game became a cultural connector, a source of joy, and a competitive pastime that resonated deeply within black communities, from coast to coast.Lamont's mission with "The Gist of Bidwist" is to breathe new life into the game, ensuring it doesn't disappear with the passing generations. He envisions a future where Bid Whist is not only a nod to the past but also a vibrant part of our present, with plotlines in movies, television, and perhaps even the next great American novel. We even got into some celebrity gossip, discussing notable Bid Whist players like Magic Johnson, Thurgood Marshall and Michael Jordan, and Lamont shared his ongoing investigation into whether former President Barack Obama is a secret Bid Whist aficionado. Before we wrapped up, Lamont emphasized the importance of his book for both seasoned players and those who feel they lack the "card-playing gene." He's determined to make Bid Whist accessible and enjoyable for everyone, using his book as a comprehensive guide to learning and loving the game.To all my listeners, if you're intrigued by the strategic and social depths of Bid Whist, or if you're simply a card game enthusiast looking for your next challenge, this episode is a must-listen.For more information on Bid Whist, to grab a copy of Lamont's book, or just to connect with the man himself, head over to Amazon or visit www.gistofbidwist.com. In this episode, Dr. Hettie V. Williams is in conversation with Lamont Jones. Williams in the current director of the Trotter Institute for the Study of Black Culture at UMass Boston and Jones is a boxing lawyer and bid whist enthusiast. Jones has used the game to understand strategy, leadership, and argues it helps us to appreciate African American culture more broadly. He is also the author of the new book The Gist of Bid Whist: The Culturally-Rich Game from Black America published by Clyde Hill Publishing. This conversation first begins with a discussion of the historical roots of Bid Whist in the African American experience through a discussion of the Pullman Porters who played an integral role as they “crisscrossed the nation” sharing the game on the trains they worked on through the Great Migration and Civil Rights Era. He further argues that the game of Bid Whist is a more strategic game than chess and as complex as any other major card game played today.

Episode 73: Rise and Fly! Lamont Jones and The Gist of Bid Whist   Normally, this is a Bridge podcast, but today my guest is Bid Whist evangelist Lamont Jones. Lamont recently published the book called The Gist of Bid Whist culminating a project he began in earnest in 2012. He's on a mission to share his love for Bid Whist with a wider audience. If you've ever been curious about Bid Whist, as I have been recently, Lamont and I go through a lot of the differences as well as the similarities between Bid Whist and Bridge. One of the things we don't have in Bridge is trash talk, and that seems to be a huge part of the Bid Whist culture. Whether it's trash-talking about taking your opponents to Boston or telling them to rise and fly, I definitely think Bid Whist has Bridge beat when it comes to talking smack. I could not believe when I read in The Gist of Bid Whist that none other than Bob Hamman said, "Bid Whist is more complex than Bridge." My question to you as a listener, is that a good thing? Overall I've just found Lamont to be a super positive, delightful person, and I'll hope you enjoy engaging with him as I did.

Most of the earliest card games were trick-taking games played in the 800s in China. These will have felt quite different to our modern eyes. They didn't have the concept of trump cards or trump suits. There was also no bidding. Trumps were added to European card games in the 1400s, followed by bidding in the 1600s. It took another 100-200 years for familiar trick-taking games like Whist and Skat to appear. A few hundred years after that, the mechanism has now found a new lease of life in modern hobby games. She had looked at IVF whilst in that relationship, but once it ended, she decided to take control of her own fertility, and give herself (and her future-self) options.Whist she was in the midst of it and educating herself about egg freezing, embryo freezing, IVF, etc. she started the blog Frozen Please to document her experience... which eventually turned into a book!Agnes openly shares with us her experience, especially the part of her life after the book which includes donor sperm, finding love, IVF... and motherhood! She now has 2 beautiful children and wouldn't change the way she has gone about things. It's such an important topic that not many people talk about but that happens very often. Aaron Daniel is an Appellate attorney and author of The Bitcoin Brief, a newsletter analysing Bitcoin's effect on law and society. In this interview, we discuss the legal arguments around making Bitcoin US legal tender, and whether it would actually confer any meaningful benefits. - - - - It is assumed that for Bitcoin to become widely adopted within the US, it would need to be made legal tender. Without such legal clarity, Bitcoin may continue to be viewed by the general population as an unofficial and risky form of money, liable to be prohibited by the state. Therefore, gaining legal tender status would be a seismic positive shift in Bitcoins development. Attempts to move the country in this direction are often applauded by Bitcoiners. Whether it is US states commencing processes to establish protections for Bitcoin's use (including efforts in Arizona to declare Bitcoin as legal tender), to activists and politicians advocating for the Federal government to consider making Bitcoin legal tender. The assumption is these are worthy actions. But, what is legal tender? What utility and protections does such status provide money? What legal framework(s) would be used to confer legal tender status? And, is it necessarily so that such a classification would benefit Bitcoin and it's users? The consideration of any nascent technology in legal terms is always fraught with uncertainty and interpretation. The constitution and bill of rights are a firm basis for the development of the world's oldest and most enduring democracy. But, the consideration of modern developments through the prism of the 18th-century founders results in legal arguments that need testing. Whist such testing is worthwhile, seeking to make a private digital currency legal tender in the US will be a huge endeavour. And, rushing to develop the legal case misses the more essential policy question: is it beneficial to Bitcoin and its users to mandate its legal standing? Fundamentally, should freedom money remain free: free from state interference, but also free for all people to accept or reject?

As we get just over halfway through our series focused on Fertility Matters at Work, we're pleased to be able to share a great example of how beneficial implementing training and support around fertility issues in the workplace can be and how it not only benefits a workplace from a cultural point of view, it impacts productivity, staff retention, and attraction. During the time Fertility Matters at Work has been developing its e-learning and training and policy package, Kate has very been working directly with a number of organizations, providing training and a clear understanding of what needs to be done to better support employers and one of those organizations is The Bank of England. In this conversation, we are joined by Anastasia Vinnikova Wellbeing Lead who talked about how the project came about as the bank already had a good foundation within the wellbeing space and a good level of education in core principles in wellbeing and life events, that impacted their workforce.  In the conversations that came up, it was clear that colleagues felt empowered from the support being provided and the culture shift had created openness and honesty amongst colleagues. Peer Support Annastasia explained the existing peer support network which shares experiences with others to offer support. It aims to equip peer supporters with the next steps and onward support. The bank had experienced momentum in their journey of infertility and pregnancy loss as a result of conversation and so had set up a community and resources, along with making policy changes surrounding pay and leave. They had also been sharing experiences through blogs and podcasts  Line Manager training:  When talking about the role of Managers, Anastasia talked about the difficulties they can experience and acknowledged the bank still has more work to do on how they educate managers. One measure is to ensure a Manager has supported through other avenues and that employers know that their Manager isn't the only place they can go to for support, hence the importance of the peer support network.  Next steps.  Whist a lot has already taken place the Bank of England are still keen to gain an understanding of why people haven't engaged with the topic as yet and are looking into further education to help challenge the stigma and taboo around the topic of infertility as you never know how close you are to those going through these challenges? What challenges needed to be overcome and advice for other organizations:  When it comes to Well-being challenges, it's important to understand that they don't stop the minute you walk into the office. Organizations need to understand that it is important to get past the stigma and put actions in place to get over this. Companies have a moral responsibility and should make it an imperative. Anastasia also talked about how as an organization you don't get the same out of employees if they don't feel supported. We also discussed the importance of intersectionality and its impact on mental health. Whilst there might be discomfort initially the fertility conversation inevitably builds momentum.  From what the Bank of England has implemented to date, they have had positive feedback from individuals which will help inform and guide, however, it's important to remember, that no one size fits all.  To find out more about how your workplace can become fertility-friendly and how you can join our brand new membership visit  http://www.fertilitymattersatwork.com (www.fertilitymattersatwork.com) [/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column] [/et_pb_row] [/et_pb_section]
