In this episode of Locked Up Sports, we're joined by author Tom McKeown to discuss his powerful memoir, This Is Panther Country: A Memoir of Youth, Underdog Spirit, and Basketball Glory. Tom takes us back to the 1974–75 season of the Babylon High School Panthers, a small-town team that shocked Long Island basketball by winning the first-ever inter-county championship. We talk about the epic rivalry with Amityville, the unforgettable final against South Side, and how a 13-year-old fan's view from the stands turned into one of the most heartfelt sports books in years. It's a story of grit, community, and the unifying power of high school sports — and it's one you don't want to miss. Tom McKeown lived and breathed basketball throughout junior and senior high school in Babylon. As an eighth grader in 1974-1975, he got to experience the thrill of watching the varsity team win their league and the Suffolk County championships. As fate would have it, this was also the first year that New York State allowed county champions to play each other, setting up a showdown between Babylon's Panthers and Nassau County's champs, the South Side Cyclones of Rockville Center. It was an epic season that engaged Tom so deeply that he has written his version of the story as This Is Panther Country. We don't want to spoil the outcome but the subtitle is A Memoir of Youth, Underdog Spirit, and Basketball Glory. Available March 18, 2025, the book chronicles life on the court, in the school hallways, and in the McKeown family home on Coppertree Lane. You'll learn a lot about the ins-and-outs of basketball tournaments but you'll also be pulled back to your own high school days of close friend groups, petty slights, unrequited crushes, and weekend parties. Tom McKeown is an Oklahoma shamanic drummer who leads sweat lodge experiences. In this episode, he carefully describes the sweat lodge experience and the relationship between shamanic drumming and spiritual growth. Tom resonates with sweat lodges, firewalking, drumming, ayahuasca journeys, and psilocybin journeys. McKeown started using a drum as a tool for meditation and had a profound experience. The drum opened up another dimension where he became something beyond himself and accessed information. The drum is used to enter this other dimension and provide healing for physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual purposes. After saying a prayer, Tom had a sweat lodge experience. It was a purification ceremony. The sweat lodge allows communication with the spirit of the universe and offers a spiritual experience. The sweat lodge has four rounds involving prayers, singing, healing intentions, and a pipe ceremony. The drumming experience is difficult to describe, but it involves the person being a vessel for a greater force while drumming. The drum takes them into a different dimension, and the sound and beat are always unpredictable and fascinating. Recent drumming experience: The narrator drummed for someone who had a Kundalini experience during the session. The energy moved through them, and their affect changed. Surrender and openness: Participants need to surrender to the energy and be open to the moment during the drumming and spiritual experiences. Creating a safe and sacred space: The narrator prepares themselves through meditation, ensures a comfortable and peaceful environment, and addresses any discomfort or anxiety participants may have. Grounding and breath work: Participants are encouraged to take off their shoes to become more present and show reverence for the sacred space. Deep breathing and meditation are also suggested to calm the mind and fully engage in the experience. No prerequisites: There are no specific requirements for participants other than coming with an open heart and mind. People usually self-select to participate in these experiences. Challenges for first-time participants: Drumming sessions can be startling and awaken intense emotions or experiences. Some individuals may find it difficult to confront certain aspects of themselves or may not be ready for the drumming experience. Debriefing and sharing experiences: In drum circles, participants are given the opportunity to talk about their experiences. If there are any uncertainties, others in the circle may provide intuitive responses. The narrator also recommends eating something, particularly chocolate, to ground oneself after the session. Balancing structure and spontaneity: The narrator trusts the universe and the spirits that come through during the drumming. They allow for spontaneity while remaining open to the processes guided by the spirits. Times when the drum doesn't work: There are instances when the drum indicates that it is not the right time to drum for someone. This can occur when there is fear involved or unresolved issues. In such cases, the narrator suggests addressing those issues before scheduling another session. Getting involved in drumming: YouTube is recommended for exploring shamanic drumming. Locally, individuals can search for drumming groups or contact the narrator for a drumming experience. Asking the universe and being open to the experience can also lead to finding opportunities. Cultural appropriation: The narrator believes that drumming is a gift from the creator and is open to anyone who wants to experience it. They acknowledge that drumming exists in various cultures and that, at some point, people will recognize that it is for all and transcends cultural boundaries. ~~ Do you want to be a guest on Mystical Lodge Radio or inquire about a personal reading? Tom McKeown, CEO, and Co-Founder at TrenData (@trendatainc) joins Michael to talk about his new company and their focus on solving the challenges of implementing HR initiatives across organizations. Chief among these, were the struggle to access and use data spread across multiple HR systems, and implementing intuitive solutions that would stimulate user adoption. TrenData’s people analytics solution acts as the hub of the organization’s employee data. “TrenData is an aggregating platform that collects data from any HR data source, with an open API as well as seamless file upload capability,” says Tom McKeown, co-founder, and CEO, TrenData. “Our client executives use the solution to analyze results, reinforce decision-making, and predict future outcomes.” The highly configurable system produces a robust and easy-to-use dashboard, displaying the most important metrics of any HR organization, such as; turnover rate, professional development, performance score, source of hire, average salary versus market benchmarks, and more. These metrics can then be trended into advanced and predictive analytics to allow organizations to not only see what happened, or why it happened but what are the right actions that will result in the best outcomes.
Humphrey-McKeownHeather and Tom came on CAU as a duo back in the summer of 2006 on Episode 554This week they were back with the entire band to support their latest release "Tapestry of Shadows". As you can see and hear, we had a marvolous time recording this show. Now you can go see them perform it tonight May 20th live at Durty Nellie's in Palatine, ILThe Humphrey-McKeown songwriting partnership began in 2006 between New York native, Heather Humphrey and Chicago-based, Tom McKeown. At an informal gathering of musicians Tom asked if anyone had interest in writing music. That day Heather said "yes" and two weeks later their collaborative partnership was formed and they were ready to see where this adventure would lead them. Before long, they were writing for publishers in Nashville, Chicago and LA. Combining Heather's innate sense of melody with Tom's pursuit of writing something that hadn't already been done before, Humphrey-McKeown wrote for any occasion and in any style; always seeking to better themselves and their craft. When asked "How do you write better songs?" Their answer has always been "That's easy...we write another song". After penning over 100 songs for others, Humphrey-McKeown changed course to focus solely on their own unique musical voice. From their first open mic in December 2010 through the release of four studio albums in less than three years, Humphrey-McKeown has had a vision of what their writing and singing together could be. Creating the perfect vehicle to bring their songs to an audience proved to be a task that took years to complete. Drummer Jim Livas has brought the big drum sound to HM since the very first show but finding the rest of the musical puzzle pieces proved more elusive. They held auditions and swapped remaining players as needed, always looking for the perfect fit. Finally, during the last recording sessions of what has become the group's fourth album, Jim remembered a truly amazing bassist from his past. That led HM to Tony Meadors and incredibly, his audition actually became one of the final tracks on the fourth CD "All I Wanted to Hear."
The TalentCulture #TChat Show is back live on Wednesday, November 19, 2014, from 7-8 pm ET (4-5 pm PT). Last week we talked about how global megatrends impact engagement strategy, and this week we’re going to talk about the challenges of enabling a talent management strategy with technology. Let’s start with ERP solutions, the backbones of many global companies. Panoramic Consulting conducted a survey in 2013 for the outcomes of companies that have implemented an ERP solution. Shockingly, 53% of the respondents reported being over budget and 61% said that the time to implement was longer than they planned for. So, how can companies alleviate these problems when it comes to their talent management strategy and technology implementations? It all starts with an enterprise’s talent management programs and processes; if the right ones aren’t in place, no amount of software automation can help improve and drive business outcomes. What’s clear is that any successful talent management project must start with a solid plan based on an accurate assessment of current programs and processes, and a technology solution that’s highly configurable and will help drive talent decisions and business outcomes. Join TalentCulture #TChat Show co-founders and co-hosts Meghan M. Biro and Kevin W. Grossman as we learn about the challenges of enabling a talent management strategy with technology with this week’s guests: Margaret Wood, HR Generalist at Kay Flo; and Tom McKeown, Head of Sales and Marketing at HRsmart. Humphrey-McKeown started off on a summer day in 2006 when singer/songwriter/producer Tom McKeown asked a group of musician friends if any had an interest in creating original music together. In the crowd that day was singer/songwriter/poet Heather Humphrey who saw this as an opportunity to take her fledgling songwriting to a new level. The two set out at once in combining Heather's words with Tom's music; to create something neither had done in the past. It was a fusion of some very dissimilar styles…yet it worked.
