George and Kathy Lutz moved into 112 Ocean Avenue in Amityville, New York, in December 1975, roughly one year after its previous residents were shot and killed in their sleep. They fled less than a month later, leaving behind their belongings and claiming to have been terrorized by demonic forces. This story served as the basis for Jay Anson's 1977 book, which itself spawned nine follow-ups, more than 60 films, and countless parodies and homages. A half a century later, what's it like to revisit the non-fiction (?) book that started it all? The Losers' Club finds that out in the latest episode of their Danse Macabre series, in which they discuss the books and movies recommended by King in his 1981 horror treatise of the same name. Losers Jenn Adams, Randall Colburn, Ashley Casseday, and Ana Marie Cox unpack the disputations, lawsuits, and defenses that color the book's history, as well as whether you can ever read a story as it was originally intended after its been fed through the pop cultural gristmill.

In this episode of Locked Up Sports, we're joined by author Tom McKeown to discuss his powerful memoir, This Is Panther Country: A Memoir of Youth, Underdog Spirit, and Basketball Glory. Tom takes us back to the 1974–75 season of the Babylon High School Panthers, a small-town team that shocked Long Island basketball by winning the first-ever inter-county championship. We talk about the epic rivalry with Amityville, the unforgettable final against South Side, and how a 13-year-old fan's view from the stands turned into one of the most heartfelt sports books in years. It's a story of grit, community, and the unifying power of high school sports — and it's one you don't want to miss. Welcome back to The Freaky Deaky! Tonight, we're stepping off the beaten path of paranormal lore to explore five lesser-known haunted houses that pack a terrifying punch. These aren't the usual suspects like Amityville or the Conjuring House—these are hidden gems of the strange and supernatural, each with first-hand accounts that'll make your skin crawl. We've got Grave's End in Brooklyn, a home that tormented its residents for over a decade; the Sallie House in Kansas, a hotbed of scratches and apparitions; the House of Death in New York, tied to literary legend and tragic violence; the Daniel Benton Homestead in Connecticut, where history and hauntings intertwine, and if time permits we'll be closing it out with the Union Screaming House in Missouri, where a family lasted just 13 days before fleeing in terror. These houses have rich, documented histories—screams echoing through quiet nights, shadowy figures lurking in corners, and physical encounters that defy explanation. Families, investigators, and even the curious have walked their halls, leaving with stories that linger long after they've gone. We'll see you on the inside... ----- TIME STAMPS: 0:00 - A Bad HOA Could Be The Least Of Your Worries 1:07 - Intro 2:27 - The Warm Up 3:48 - Return of the 1-Star Reviews! 4:52 - I Bet Someone is Annoyed By This Section 7:06 - Holler.Baby/TheFreakyDeaky 8:23 - (EPISODE STARTS HERE YOU IMPATIENT F***S) 8:33 - STORY #1: Grave's End (Brooklyn, New York) 11:23 - Elaine's Book on Grave's End 12:03 - What Kept The Mercado's In Grave's End? 13:22 - *Vietnamese Dong, Not Malaysian (Apologies) 16:23 - STORY #2: The Sallie House (Atchison, Kansas) 21:03 - Is Sallie Just a Spirit, or Something Darker..? 22:23 - Is The Studio Haunted, Or Is It a Wonky TV Remote? 23:53 - What Are Your Thoughts on The Sallie House Haunting? 25:03 - STORY #3: House of Death (Greenwich Village, New York City) 25:53 - Africa by Toto..

Labyrinth is a cult classic. But how did things get to this point? We have contrasting memories of its initial popularity. And we both agree it is not the best work from any of the major players involved. Now that Robert Eggers is involved with the sequel, what does the future hold? What does it mean when a film is described as Lynchian? From what we can tell, the definition has changed over the years. The only reason we are even covering 2016's Always Shine is because the word often used to describe it is “Lynchian”. It does fit one definition of the term. Unfortunately, that is not necessarily a good thing. At a very base level, it sounds like Mulholland Drive. But this is more than a movie about two actresses in Los Angeles. In a way, it is almost the exact opposite of Lynch's film. We talk about the odd way it tries to build mystery and tension, the characters, and its abrupt ending. It is no surprise that we are covering a movie from the Sundance Film Festival. It will be shocking to some that we are reviewing a movie that features alien tentacle sex. Of course, if you are a long time listener, you know we have been down this path before. Will this time be as good as the first time around?Touch Me has a lot going on. Along with inter-species sex, there are themes of codependency, friendship, and trust. The Amityville Horror is a book published in 1977 by Jay Anson and then turned into a cult classic horror film franchise. The story is based on the experience of the Lutz family when they moved into a home in Amityville on Long Island, New York - a home that was the location of a familicide when Ronald DeFeo Jr. murdered his siblings and parents in 1974. On December 18, 1975, George and Kathy Lutz moved their family into their new house on Ocean Avenue in Amityville, NY, where, just one year earlier, Ronald DeFeo Jr. had murdered all six members of his family. Twenty-eight days later, the Lutz family fled the home, leaving behind all their belongings and vowing never to return again. According to the Lutzes, their time in the house on Ocean Avenue was a nightmare of psychic attacks and demonic activity that put them in fear for their lives. The supposed experience of the Lutz family served as the basis for the iconic haunted house story, The Amityville Horror, and the countless films adapted from or inspired by the original novel. However, unlike most other stories of paranormal experiences, The Amityville Horror became a phenomenon that influenced everything from Ronald DeFeo's criminal defense to the American public's belief in the supernatural. Yet for all their talk of it being a genuine story of demonic activity, in the years since the publication of The Amityville Horror, a large body of evidence from skeptical evaluations to court records and interview transcripts suggest that America's most notorious haunted house might not have been quite so haunted after all.Thank you to the Incredible Dave White of Bring Me the Axe Podcast for research and Writing support!!ReferencesAnsen, Jay. 1978. On the evening of November 13, 1974, twenty-three-year-old Ronald DeFeo Jr. burst through the door of Henry's Bar in Amityville, Long Island, frantically yelling for help and telling the patrons that someone had killed his parents. When a small group returned to the house with DeFeo, they discovered that not only had his parents, Louise and Ronald Sr., been killed, but so had his four brothers and sisters—all shot to death in their beds with a .35 caliber rifle.During a police interview that night, investigators became suspicious of Ronald DeFeo. Not only was his story of a mob hit difficult to believe, but he seemed incapable of keeping certain aspects of his story straight during the interview. The next day, DeFeo broke down and confessed to the murders, explaining that he had hated his father and telling investigators, “Once I started [shooting], I just couldn't stop.”Ronald DeFeo's trial was one of New York's biggest news stories of 1975 and attracted considerable attention due to his attempt to mount an insanity defense and his frequent outbursts in the courtroom. In the end, the defense was unsuccessful and DeFeo was convicted of the murders and sentenced to life in prison. DeFeo's conviction should have been the end of the story, but it turned out it was only the beginning of what would eventually become one of the most notorious supernatural claims in American history.Thank you to the Incredible Dave White of Bring Me the Axe Podcast for research and Writing support!!ReferencesCarter, A.J., Soper Susan , Dallas Gatewood, and Sam Washington. 1974.
