Episode Notes U.S. destination marketing organizations are eager to increase their marketing activities in China later this year. So how successful will those efforts be? Global Tourism Reporter Dawit Habtemariam writes that any success depends on flights between the countries returning to pre-pandemic levels. Gloria Lan, CEO of tour operator Tour America, said a lot of destination marketing organizations are planning to travel to China to start soliciting business. Habtemariam cites Visit California as one travel brand sending representatives to China in the near future. However, weekly flights between the two countries are far below 2019 levels. Habtemariam adds some destination marketing organizations don't plan to invest heavily in China until air connectivity improves, citing Meet Boston as one example. We turn next to a comparison between hotel giants Marriott and Hilton. Skift Research's new report examines the fierce competition the two companies are engaged in, especially in areas such as net unit growth. Senior Research Analyst Pranavi Agarwal writes Skift Research compares Marriott and Hilton and analyzes the differences in net unit growth, segment mix and profit margins coming into the second half of 2023. While Marriott is the largest branded hotel in the U.S., Agarwal notes its pipeline isn't growing as fast as Hilton's. Finally, India's aviation industry is poised for a major hiring surge, writes Middle East and Asia Reporter Amrita Ghosh in Skift's India Newsletter. Ghosh reports that Air India recently announced it would hire more than 1,000 pilots to support its fleet expansion. That comes after its low-cost subsidiary Air India Express hired more than 280 pilots and 250 cabin crew during a recruitment drive across three major cities. In addition, India's civil aviation ministry has created more than 1,200 new jobs — close to 800 of which are to help overcome a shortage of air traffic control officers.

Their business is quantum computing and if, in the next two years, they achieve their targets, we may have quantum computers as laptops. And, if you don't know anything about quantum computers, all you do need to know is that they are MILLIONS of times more powerful than what's sitting on your desk today. Jason explains how 'the band got back together' to form this exceptionally exciting small company that may be about to revolutionise personal computing. The team is vastly experienced, sporting PhD and Professor badges, so there's nothing flaky about them. They've also been scrutinised by some serious investors including Atlantic Bridge, btov Industrial Technologies, 808 Ventures and Enterprise Ireland, who have pitched €10 million at the company to date. Jason explains what their expansion plans are (they're hiring) and over the course of the interview the true magnitude of this project is revealed. We may be looking at something akin to a new Apple. In Ireland. Really. They're already in talks with IBM.Not surprising so that Jason's 'hire in a heartbbeat' is the Woz, Stephen Wozniak, co-founder of Apple.25.00" Mary McKenna, founder of Tour AmericaWe had invited Mary on to That Great Business Show to tell us how she and her company keep winning any 'best managed' awards available, and have done so for many years now. But that invitation was sent before President Biden announced the opening of the US borders, allowing your business to start the necessary travel to sell your goods and services to the world's largest economy. So, opportunistically, we decided to ask US born Mary, who has made a highly-successful career from 'selling America' to tell us her many top tips on how to best to travel, where to find the best airline deals (not necessarily booking directly!), using Revolut to save up to 2.5% every time you buy something, upgrading your hotel for $20, the benefits of various airport loyalty schemes...and so much more. And of course we asked her about winning those awards and also, the elephant in the room, what it was like not to have ANY BUSINESS AT ALL for the last year and a half. Top listen. Greg chats with CEO and Founder of Tour America and Cruise Holidays, Mary McKenna. To say Mary is a survivor is an understatement - 9/11 is a total disaster when your business is bringing people to America and then there was a near death experience where she was literally rolled over by a jeep behind her office. During the recession that wiped out 50% of the travel operators in Ireland, Mary started Cruise Holidays. This ultimate survivor, lives her life according to a very special set of values, many of which were passed down to her by her dad, Frank who she absolutely adored. Enjoy the show!
Mary McKenna opens up about her incredible journey over the past 23 years of building the travel business that we all know and love Tour America and Cruise Holidays. This year Mary was selected as a finalist on the EY Entrepreneur of the year program with 23 other business people. Mary expressed her tremendous pride in this achievement and discussed her relationship with her Father and how he Mentored her, before mentoring was cool or emotional intelligence was a thing, he advised his daughter to ‘find what you love’ the passion and do that. Her father passed away in her early 20’s and it forced her to grow up overnight. Mary’s sister was involved in a horrific car accident and during this time their Dad went to hospital for a procedure and tragically passed away. Mary maps this moment to the beginning of her resilience and as the knocks came in business as they do she learned to take them and get back up again and again. These blows involved 9/11 where her business took a massive hit and she was forced to let 11 staff go. She does admit to feeling sorry for herself for a few weeks. Then she decided to launch Cruise Holidays and hired 10 of the 11 back. I think the cool term for this is a ‘Pivot’Resilience is a must to survive and Mary urges us to work on the Business not in the Business. Everything is about the core values of the Company and creating the right company culture. Culture starts with the leader, be happy in your work and be kind to each other, leave moods at home. In 2012 Mary hired through JobsBridge a government scheme which was abused by other businesses, Mary reminds us that you ‘only die with your conscience’ and gave her team the freedom to be creative and to innovate. Some more knocks later more ups and downs Mary did not follow the crowd during the recession instead of making staff redundant and cutting Marketing she doubled the spend on Marketing and grew sales by 70%Finding opportunities during the recession Mary purchased an amazing premises forThe Cork Tour America branch. So much gold in this Podcast Survival instincts, a very serious car crash 50/50 chance of surviving. The Ash cloud hits the travel industry. Mentoring is a passion for Mary she is actively involved in mentoring programs. A female program called Going for Growth’ and on the Task force of Dublin Chamber. Mary has a habit of achieving her goals, she writes them down and ticks them off one by one. Today family values are top priority, the team are encouraged to work hard but not to miss out on key family events. Tour America has achieved Deloitte best managed company 9 years running. As a leader she is constantly working on inspiring her team. Her advice to her 20 year old self is to not sweat the small stuff, self care and Health are paramount to success. She compares the connections between Sport and Business on having a succession plan and talent spotting. We just had to give Mary a massive LifeForce Mentors Pat on the Back. What an amazing journey and an absolute lady, so generous and supportive of other entrepreneurs. A life changing 52 minutes from a LifeForce Mentor.
