Facing fear and living with OCD with Renee Zukin, Author of ‘Every Day I'm Brave'

On today's podcast I chatted with the author of the book ‘Every Day I'm Brave', Renee Zukin. Renee talks about her life and career and in particular about the struggles of living with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder otherwise known as OCD. For some reason she was always fearful in her life, and when this mum of three was unravelling with malnutrition because of the irrational fear of what might be in her food, she realised that she had to seek much needed help. Eventually she was diagnosed of having OCD, and it was only with a deep understanding of this condition did she learn how to recognise and control it and begin to change her life for the better. This avid writer put pen to paper and wrote the book ‘Every Day I'm Brave' to help others who suffer from similar conditions or who are gripped by fear, preventing them from living the full lives they deserve.  Renee says the book is part memoir and in part a practical self help book, and in our conversation she talks about the debilitating effect of “fear” and how you can start to face it, one step at a time. On today's podcast I had the immense pleasure of chatting with the author of the book, ‘Octopus on a Treadmill', Gifty Enright. As a young woman growing up in Ghana she dreamt of having lots of shoes, big cupboards, and the trappings of success, so she moved to London to fulfill her dream. She quickly discovered that she missed that strong sense of community that she enjoyed in Ghana, but she dug deep and carved out a very successful career and life for herself in London. After a number of years this successful, hard working career mum hit a “Burnout” wall that she knew could not be solved with the medication that was being prescribed to her. This avid reader who was determined to get better, did some deep research to find a sustainable solution to her life situation. She applied what she learnt and after just three months she was on the road to recovery and hasn't looked back since. She wrote the book 'Octopus on a Treadmill' to share what she learned so that other busy career mums who are constantly juggling don't hit the same burnout wall that she did. As well as being an author, she is a public speaker and a coach and she doesn't care so much about those shoes anymore! On today's podcast I had the privilege of speaking with Irish actor Diarmuid Noyes, the co-lead of the movie ‘Christy', which has been winning awards in Ireland and abroad and rave reviews from movie critics everywhere. Diarmuid plays the character Shane in the movie brilliantly, as he wrestles with the job of trying to steer his brother Christy on the right path and at the same time, not to derail his own life. Diarmuid talks in detail about the huge preparation that goes into getting a part like this right, the process around the whole movie and the special bond that has grown between the novice actors and the more experienced actors like himself and Emma Willis, who played his wife Stacey in the movie. He has been acting since he was nine years of age, a career shaped in some ways by a  crush on Mary Kate Olsen and personal circumstances, and even now he still finds this crazy profession challenging. Diarmuid is extremely humble, finds praise a difficult thing to accept and for some strange reason he gives himself too hard a time.  Yes Diarmuid, you are a brilliant actor. Enjoy the show... Christy opens in Irish cinemas on the 29th August, and in Britain from the 5th September. After such a long wait we were finally in our seats to watch the premiere of my son's first feature film, Christy at the prestigious Berlinaile International Film Festival. The speeches were made to open the festival and finally the lights went down and the film began. I wasn't fully sure what to expect of the movie, and within minutes I found myself emotionally gripped by the story and throughout I laughed and I cried, I cheered on the main characters and hoped that things would work out for them, and at the very end, and I really don't want to give anything away of the story, I wept and had to take a few moments to dry my eyes and gather myself. The movie was brilliant and moving, all of the talented actors and everyone involved waved the Irish and Knocknaheeney, Cork flag proudly and yes, my son did good, beyond good, brilliant. After the movie had finished and I dried my eyes, I chatted with Daithí O'Dronai who did the music score, to see how he enjoyed it, and how he went about creating such a beautiful sound backdrop throughout the film to match the story.  I then managed to catch Brendan, the man of the moment for a couple of words before chatting with some of the very talented cast; Diarmuid Nose, Sophia McNamara, Emma Willis and Ciaran Bermingham, a mix of established and brand new actors about their experience of working in the movie and some other projects they are involved in. At the after party I finally caught up with the extremely humble and down to earth, Daniel Power who played the main character Christy in the movie. This superstar in the making explained his journey from rapping to acting, and how easy that transition was for him and once again it shows the huge role that initiatives like the Kabin Studio can play in young people's lives.   A few drinks later and it was time to get to bed - this wasn't your typical Valentine's Day, but it was the day when an international audience fell in love with Christy, with Knocknaheeny and this special love letter to Cork city. He chatted about his career path, the ups and downs, the buzz of being a successful salesman, how to close a sale, the special role of cars in our lives, QTR and why the music never ever stops! Hear 'Carry Me to the Water,' a song about our father's summer vacation turned ferry service across beach rocks, and 'Boneshaker,' an anthem to our first taste of freedom on two wheels.  Plus, learn about our brother Paul's revolutionary mixing technique on 'Hurt People,' where removing almost every instrument proved that less can be more. On today's podcast I had the pleasure of learning some of life's lessons from a very wise man, Kevin Fahey, CEO and Founder of Peer to Peer coaching company, Essence of Leadership. Kevin came from a family farm in Tipperary, he went into the Irish clothing manufacturing industry and after a board room battle he found himself at home, unemployed. Never a man to stand still Kevin started off a successful training company and was once labelled a Positive Psychopath by one of his clients. Like so many other businesses the recession that followed the Celtic Tiger crash, had him once again wondering where the next few bob was going to come from.  Kevin reinvented himself, and with all of his collective wisdom and experience he remodelled his business following the simple principle that often the wisdom that we are searching for actually sits within us. He explains why and how peer to peer coaching is so powerful, in particular for business owners and senior managers. As I have been very recently grappling with a big birthday number, we also chatted about ageism and moving into “wisdom”! I hope you enjoy our conversation as much as I did...  Podcast Production by Greg Canty Greg's blog Greg on Twitter  Greg on LinkedIn Email Greg with feedback or suggested guests: greg@fuzion.ie

On today's podcast I chatted with relationship crisis coach, Puya Delavar. About 10 years ago Puya was on the brink - his successful corporate career came at a huge price as his marriage and his personal health were in crisis. He had successfully played the corporate game, giving his career everything and more but realised that he was about to lose thievery  thing that was most precious to him and he wanted to change. It got so bad that his own doctor recommended that he should quit his job! He studied and researched how to repair the damage and recover his relationship and this process of discovery not only led to what he calls “holistic success”, but it also led him on the path to helping other men who find themselves in the same life predicament. Puya's ‘Crisis to Connection' programme helps men to face and embrace their emotions and over twelve weeks he helps them to repair their relationships and prosper. On today's podcast I had the absolute pleasure of discussing one of my huge passions, my love of Liverpool Football Club with Liverpudlian, Josh Williams. Josh is a football analyst, a journalist, an author and a podcaster and his very focussed area of interest is the football club that I adore. Josh is from the city, he has an analytical mind and he has combined that with his passion for his club, and on his podcast and Substack account, Distance Covered he goes into the kind of clever detail that all dedicated fans love. He left his full time job as a football journalist with the Liverpool Echo to bravely follow his passion and if you want to read and listen to what he has to say you have to subscribe - it's more than worth it. As well as being a clever football analyst he is a super nice guy who seems to have this thing called life figured out! Anders, a former international handball champion and entrepreneur, now spends his time writing and speaking at events about philosophy and the role of technology for humanity. Anders has many big ideas, he invests in technology businesses that can create a positive effect on humanity and unlike me he is very positive about the role of AI in society. An unlikely and unexpected meeting with my cousin Mick Brennan led us to recording this podcast at the beginning of the year. Mick is a psychotherapist and counsellor among many other interests that he has. On the podcast we figured out the meaning of life, and he also chatted to me about the importance of building a solid foundation for your mental health and general well being by looking after a few basic things every day. While we chatted about well being we also spoke about the importance of being resilient and being able to cope with the normal stresses that life can throw at all of us. On today's podcast I chatted with Paul Niland, journalist and CEO / Founder of Lifeline Ukraine, the national suicide prevention resource for the country. This is the third year in succession that I have chatted with Paul from his apartment in Kyiv as he and fellow Ukrainians prepare for another war time Christmas and the prospect of yet another year of this brutal war. Even though Paul is experiencing the effects of the relentless stress of living through a war, he says the mood there is one of resolute resistance, Ukraine will not capitulate and he is confident that victory will come. We spoke about daily life in Kyiv, the possible difference that Trump may make, how people end up being hardened by war and we even spoke about Christmas trees. This is my last podcast of 2024, I'd like to thank all of my guests this year and I'd like to thank you, my listeners. Have a wonderful, peaceful Christmas and let's hope that Paul and his fellow Ukrainians will experience this too, sooner rather than later. On today's podcast I chatted with Michelle Furey, who comes from that famous Irish musical family. Michelle' s career wasn't a musical one, but one in the beauty industry which resulted in her establishing her own beauty clinic. Her life took a huge turn in 2018 when just like many others, she went to Turkey for what should have been a routine Tummy Tuck procedure. This procedure turned out to be a botched horror show of monumental proportions which has resulted in Michelle needing 21 subsequent procedures to restore her health, which has still not been fully restored, Michelle, determined to make sure that no one suffers like her has started her own cosmetic surgery company Asetica to provide safe, affordable procedures for these who need them Our conversation provides a fascinating insight into this poorly regulated industry, about who needs these procedures and what would make them take the same dangerous journey as Michelle took.  Enjoy the show...  Podcast Production by Greg Canty Greg's blog Greg on Twitter  Greg on LinkedIn Email Greg with feedback or suggested guests: greg@fuzion.ie
