Typee is Herman Melville's first book, recounting his experiences after having jumped ship in the Marquesas Islands in 1842, and becoming a captive of a cannibal island tribe. It was an immediate success in America and England, and was Melville's most popular work during his lifetime. It was not until the end of the 1930's that it was surpassed in popularity by Moby Dick, more than thirty years after his death. The story provoked harsh criticism for its condemnation of missionary efforts in the Pacific Islands. Many sought to discredit the book, claiming that it was a work of fiction, but this criticism ended when the events it described were corroborated by Melville's fellow castaway, Richard T. Greene, who appears in the story as the character Toby.Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

Herman Melvill, (born Aug. 1, 1819, New York, N.Y., U.S.—died Sept. 28, 1891, New York City), was a U.S. writer. Born to a wealthy New York family that suffered great financial losses, Melville had little formal schooling and began a period of wanderings at sea in 1839. In 1841 he sailed on a whaler bound for the South Seas; the next year he jumped ship in the Marquesas Islands. His adventures in Polynesia were the basis of his successful first novels, Typee (1846) and Omoo (1847). After his allegorical fantasy Mardi (1849) failed, he quickly wrote Redburn (1849) and White-Jacket (1850), about the rough life of sailors. Moby-Dick (1851), his masterpiece, is both an intense whaling narrative and a symbolic examination of the problems and possibilities of American democracy; it brought him neither acclaim nor reward when published. Increasingly reclusive and despairing, he wrote Pierre(1852), which, intended as a piece of domestic “ladies” fiction, became a parody of that popular genre, Israel Potter (1855), The Confidence-Man (1857), and magazine stories, including “Bartleby the Scrivener” (1853) and “Benito Cereno” (1855). After 1857 he wrote verse. In 1866 a customs-inspector position finally brought him a secure income. He returned to prose for his last work, the novel Billy Budd, Foretopman, which remained unpublished until 1924. Neglected for much of his career, Melville came to be regarded by modern critics as one of the greatest American writers. From https://www.britannica.com/summary/Herman-Melville. For more information about Herman Melville:Previously on The Quarantine Tapes:Greg Grandin about Melville, at 01:55: https://quarantine-tapes.simplecast.com/episodes/the-quarantine-tapes-054-greg-grandinMoby Dick: https://www.simonandschuster.com/books/Moby-Dick/Herman-Melville/Folger-Shakespeare-Library/9780671028350“The Life of Herman Melville”: https://www.pbs.org/wgbh/americanexperience/features/whaling-biography-herman-melville/“Herman Melville at Home”: https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2019/07/29/herman-melville-at-home

Legacy: the Artists Behind the Legends

Herman Melville was an American novelist, poet, and short story writer active during the American Renaissance period from roughly the mid 1840s until his death in 1891. His best known works include magnificent classics such as Moby Dick and Typee, and while Melville today is considered one of the great American authors, his work…and Melville himself…were practically forgotten for the last thirty years of his life. A man of astounding creative vision, Herman brought to life his heritage and his experiences on the open ocean in his works, and additionally wrote of the large contradictions of American society during a time of rapid change. This was a man who lived on the open seas for years hunting whales for oil, a man who witnessed the Civil War yet was prevented from fighting in it, one who desperately sought to connect with his readers though sadly could not reach them through his storytelling until nearly 100 years after his birth. Melville’s existence is full of ups and downs like the waves of the ocean he so fondly knew, from his youth in New York City to his final days piecing together one last manuscript. I have to warn you, this week is both fascinating and melancholic as we discuss Herman Melville, because Melville’s writing career parallels that of the story Icarus: he was a bright spark amongst his contemporaries, deemed to be one of the greats of his generation, and then it’s as if those wings helping him to soar melted away when he neared too close to the sun. As a result, Melville was never able to fly again, thus leading him down a path of duress, struggle, and heartbreak. Don’t worry, I picked a very strong drink for the drink of the week, so let’s go ahead and get episode 15 of Legacy: the Artists Behind the Legends rolling with writer Herman Melville.

In revising their own texts, or other people’s texts, writers erase the past, remodel it, or reinvent it. They create versions of themselves, and those versions are recorded in the textual identities they create through revision. By studying revision, we are able to see not only how a single writer evolves but also how a culture insists upon certain evolutions, with or without the writer’s consent. Therefore, the dynamics of revision can take us to the heart of identity formation both in its expressive and repressive strains. What compels a culture to rewrite its texts? How do we track revision in order to “see” or rather “give witness to” revisionary processes? In addressing these problems, digital scholarship can offer far more access to the fluid texts that expose the dynamics of revision and help us confront the necessity of revision in our culture. John Bryant draws upon examples from revision studies, adaptation, and translation in order to highlight the elements of creativity, appropriation, and cultural difference that are at stake in dealing with the ethics and editing of revision. Along the way, he demonstratse TextLab, the Melville Electronic Library’s revision editing tool, and discusses the ethical as well as editorial dimensions of other imagined tools, such as Melville Remix and How Billy [Budd] Grew. Bryant is Professor of English at Hofstra University and received his BA. MA, and PhD from the University of Chicago. He has written on Melville, related writers of the nineteenth-century, and textual scholarship. He is also editor of Leviathan: A Journal of Melville Studies. His recent book, Melville Unfolding: Sexuality, Politics, and the Versions of Typee (Michigan 2008), is based on his online fluid-text edition Herman Melville’s Typee. He is currently working on a critical biography, Herman Melville: A Half-Known Life (Wiley) and the NEH-funded Melville Electronic Library (MEL), an online critical archive and “We the People” project.
