Dave can't make it this week, so Megan and Evan review this week's very different films as a duo. First, Megan covers the Ami Canaan Mann's biopic AUDREY'S CHILDREN (2:32), which chronicles a period in the life of world-renowned children's doctor Dr. Audrey Evans (Natalie Dormer), as she works to revolutionize treatment of childhood cancer during the late 1960s and helps co-found the first Ronald McDonald House. Come for Natalie Dormer's excellent performance. Next, they discuss Jon Kasbe and Crystal Moselle's disappointing documentary MY ROBOT SOPHIA (17:41), which follows inventor David Hanson's attempts to build life-like AI. The film features a fascinating topic, but fails to delve deep enough into it to be worthwhile. Lastly, Evan reviews Jake Schreier's THUNDERBOLTS* (37:08) the latest Marvel film, which follows a ragtag group of anti-heroes led by Florence Pugh who must confront a powerful force: their traumas and darkest secrets. It's not your typical Marvel movie, and that's a very good thing because it has a lot of heart and soul. And in this week's Patreon exclusive audio, we talk about the Coen Brothers' 1984 directorial debut, BLOOD SIMPLE!
The blood-soaked Blood Simple represents the debuts of not only auteurs Joel & Ethan Coen, but also their star (and Joel's future wife) Frances McDormand. They don't seem to agree though with the widely-shared view that their first film was an expertly-plotted noir. It's one of their best movies, in fact. When the Coen Brothers go down to Texas to shoot a nihilistic movie about death and contract killings, classics like this and No Country For Old Men result. And considering it was an independent production without any stars, it was quite a hit. The brilliant highlight sequence is John Getz covering up what he thinks is the murder of Dan Hedaya, the man he's cuckolded. So enjoy episode #2 in Revenge Month and our 657th episode overall as we, yes ARE having a good time in our yellow suit and hat while we review Blood Simple. Well, Actually: the Sundance film festival (the "Utah/US Film Festival" as it was known at first) got its start in 1978, while the Toronto International Film Festival got its start in 1976. Also, Dessau is a neighbourhood in Austin, Texas, so the "Dessau" in the sign outside the club must refer to that. After much ado about Anora, we finally get into our Coen brothers series beginning with their 1984 debut film, Blood Simple. The guys open the show talking about how and from whom the movie got its startup money. Dave tells us about the title, while Andrew addresses the use of sight, sound, and objects in the picture. They praise the cast, debate red herrings, and agonize over the final scene. They say that in Texas, you're on your own. But we only know about podcasting. And in podcasting you use the buddy system. That's this week on Hell of a Picture.

With only their third feature film (following Blood Simple & Raising Arizona), The Coen Brothers (Joel & Ethan) delivered one of the most unique crime dramas of its era...or any era. This neo-noir takes place during the Prohibition Era in an unidentified American city which is currently enmeshed in an ongoing war between two rival criminal organizations, one lead by Leo (Albert Finney) and the other lead by Johnny Caspar (Jon Polito). Leo's main advisor and most trusted lieutenant is Tom (Gabriel Byrne) whose fears and machinations are at the core of this story. And through Tom, we get to encounter a variety of colorful characters including Verna (Marcia Gay Harden), The Dane (JE Freeman), Bernie (John Turturro), Mink (Steve Buscemi) and so many others who are each on one side of this burgeoning conflict. However the story is not what stands out most about this enduring cult classic....it's the inventive camerawork, bravura performances, gorgeous production design, and endlessly quotable dialogue! So just in time for St. Patrick's Day, let's find out exactly what the rumpus is.... Patreon Justin has picked some gems and corkers before, like Blood Simple and Hard Eight, and this time he's chosen the little known 1992 comedy, Brain Donors."Brain Donors" was produced during a time when Hollywood was revisiting and paying homage to classic comedy styles, and its production was heavily influenced by the desire to recreate the Marx Brothers' iconic brand of humor. The film was written by Pat Proft, known for his work on the "Naked Gun" series, and produced by David Zucker, Jerry Zucker, and Jim Abrahams, the trio behind many successful comedies of the 1980s. Their involvement ensured that the film would be packed with rapid-fire jokes, slapstick, and absurdity, staying true to the spirit of the Marx Brothers while adding a modern twist. The project was initially conceived as a direct tribute to the Marx Brothers, with the working title "Lame Ducks," and the characters were loosely based on Groucho, Chico, and Harpo Marx.John Turturro, who played the Groucho-esque character Jacques, was a standout in the cast, bringing his unique energy and comedic timing to the role. The production faced challenges in balancing the homage to classic comedy with appealing to contemporary audiences, which led to mixed reactions upon its release. Despite its star-studded creative team and ambitious vision, the film struggled at the box office, partly due to limited marketing and the niche appeal of its humor. However, over time, "Brain Donors" has garnered a cult following, appreciated for its commitment to reviving the chaotic, irreverent spirit of the Marx Brothers. The making of the film reflects a passionate attempt to honor a bygone era of comedy, even if it didn't achieve mainstream success. If you enjoy the show we have a Patreon, so become a supporter.www.patreon.com/thevhsstrikesbackPlot SummaryRoland T Flakfixer, Jacques and Rocco, a trio of eccentric misfits, are hired by the wealthy widow Lillian Oglethorpe to establish a ballet company in honor of her late husband. The crew also tackles the Detroit Lions' crushing playoff loss, the infamous curse, and whether it's worse to almost make history or fail completely. They explore Hollywood's obsession with plastic surgery, shocking celebrity transformations, and why classic pop culture moments still resonate. Plus, they pay tribute to David Lynch's legendary filmmaking, surrealist cinema, and why his work remains iconic. The conversation shifts to underrated neo-noir films, the Coen brothers' early work, and why Boyhood and Blood Simple deserve more recognition. This episode of Normal World includes Lila Hart. Adam Egypt Mortimer is an American filmmaker, Producer and graphic novel writer. Originally from Boston, Adam kicked off his directing career with Some Kind of Hate in 2015 and followed that up with 2019's Daniel Isn't Real and 2020's Arch Enemy. But Adam doesn't stop at films; he's also ventured into comics, co-creating series like Ballistic and Black Star Renegades. In this episode Adam opens up about his journey. We chat about facing personal fears as a director, easing the pressure when making your first film, and staying adaptable when shit goes sideways on set.Adam shares his thoughts on enjoying the filmmaking process, keeping your passion alive, the importance of continuous learning, and even some of his favorite horror deep cuts. Adam delivers an incredibly insightful and candid interview, and I got a lot of advice as well as reassurance from this conversation. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. Please welcome, Adam Egypt Mortimer. Here are some key takeaways from this conversation with Adam Egypt Mortimer:Identify and address your anxieties. Filmmaking demands a wide range of skills, as Sidney Lumet emphasizes in his book Making Movies. Directors need to be renaissance people, well-versed in everything from art and psychology to music and literature. It can be overwhelming to juggle these diverse disciplines, but an effective director has to recognize their weaknesses and actively work on them. For Adam, working with actors was a major source of insecurity, so he made it a priority to study Judith Weston's work to improve in that area before approaching his first movie.Depressurize your first film. There's a common belief that your first film needs to be a masterpiece like Reservoir Dogs, Blood Simple, or Brick. However, Adam argues that this pressure can harm you creatively and cause your movie to suffer. He suggests accepting from the outset that your first film will have flaws, and that's okay. Instead of aiming for perfection, focus on proving to yourself and the world that you can complete what you start. By alleviating some of the pressure, you allow yourself more creative freedom and ultimately will make a better film.Adapt at a Darwinian level. Adam's story about a lead actor falling ill on a crucial production day is a powerful example of adaptability. When faced with this setback, he intentionally avoided panicking and instead saw it as an opportunity to create something new. He reassured himself and his crew that this disaster could lead to an opportunity to make a scene that was even better than was originally planned in the script. While this mindset might seem like wishful thinking, it underscores the level of strength and resilience you'll need to develop as as a director because shit will happen—you need to not only handle it but use it to your advantage.Relax and enjoy the journey. Reflecting on his career, Adam wishes he could tell his younger self to enjoy the process more. Making movies takes time, effort, and a bit of luck, so it's crucial to relax and give yourself the space to do it right. He specifically mentioned that he would encourage his younger self to not be so hard on himself and to watch more cool French movies. The message is clear: whatever inspires you, make time for it, and remember to enjoy the journey that led you to fall in love with cinema in the first place.Show NotesMovies:Some Kind of HateDaniel Isn't RealArch EnemyBad Day at Black RockEasy Riders, Raging BullsThe ExorcistPersonaFight ClubAlienVideodromeBride of FrankensteinMartyrsPossessionBugKiller...

In the past year, triangular love stories have loomed large in cinema - Past Lives, Challengers and Passages all had different angles on the spiky geometry of three-cornered relationships. Since Casablanca, these complicated love affairs have fascinated filmmakers and audiences alike. They can be the subject of romantic comedies, at the centre of a melodrama or the motive for murder in a thriller - the relationships can be gay or straight and the budgets big or small.Jean Luc Godard's iconic new wave robbery tale Bande à part is 60 this year. It seems that each generation has its iconic love triangle movie - The Philadelphia Story, Sabrina, The Graduate, Blood Simple, Y Tu Mama Tambien, The Notebook and My Best Friend's Wedding - the films could not be more different but the dynamics are always rich and provocative. is a 2007 American neo-Western crime thriller film written and directed by Joel and Ethan Coen, based on Cormac McCarthy's 2005 novel of the same name. Starring Tommy Lee Jones, Javier Bardem, and Josh Brolin, the film is set in the desert landscape of 1980 West Texas. The film revisits the themes of fate, conscience, and circumstance that the Coen brothers had explored in the films Blood Simple (1984), Raising Arizona (1987), and Fargo (1996). The film follows three main characters: Llewelyn Moss (Brolin), a Vietnam War veteran and welder who stumbles upon a large sum of money in the desert; Anton Chigurh (Bardem), a hitman who is sent to recover the money; and Ed Tom Bell (Jones), a sheriff investigating the crime. The film also stars Kelly Macdonald as Moss's wife, Carla Jean, and Woody Harrelson as Carson Wells, a bounty hunter seeking Moss and the return of the $2 million.

This week, Josh Munro, aka Joosh, is back to talk about a movie Travis hasn't seen before. It's the debut feature film from Joel and Ethan Coen, Blood Simple. The plot revolves around a man putting a contract kill out on his wife, and her lover. But when he ends up shot, things quickly get out of control. A private investigator with questionable morals, a pearl handled revolver, and a guy who just won't seem to die. So does this hold up to the high standards of other Coen brothers films? Or is it a stumble out of the box for the first time filmmakers? Let's find out...Thanks go out to Audie Norman (@TheAudieNorman) for the album art. Every major filmmaker has to start somewhere....and this Neo-Noir thriller was the feature filmmaking debut for Joel and Ethan Coen forty years ago. Yes the same brothers who have delivered many memorable films since then including Fargo, The Big Lebowski, O Brother Where Art Thou, Inside Llewelyn Davis, and No Country For Old Men for which they won Best Picture at the Oscars. This is the simple story of four people in the heart of Texas: a bar owner (Dan Hedaya), his wife (Frances McDormand), her secret lover (John Getz), and the mysterious stranger (M. Emmet Walsh) hired by the bar owner to spy on them....and possibly more? :o Of course, things get increasingly dicey and violent from there....it's time to revisit one of the more influential thrillers of the 1980's. Writer and podcaster Jake Tropila returns for a dive into the dusty, hard-nosed pleasures of John Dahl's 1993 neo-noir western 'Red Rock West'. The film has been newly restored and released on blu-ray in a great edition courtesy of Cinématographe, a new sub-label from the folks behind Vinegar Syndrome. We start with a discussion of the career of John Dahl, an underrated director with a sharp style that made him a prime helmer of small, smart thrillers of the era alongside his skilled conteporaries like Bill Duke and Carl Franklin. Then we turn to Red Rock West, its influences, and where it exists downstream from the success of the Coen Brothers' 'Blood Simple', a film that bolstered a neo-noir resurgence in the late 80s and early 90s. Finally, we discuss the relative absence of the neo-noir in the modern cinematic landscape, the migration of these sorts of stories into longform, episodic television, and some hopes for the genre's future, courtesy of some recent releases like the latest Rose Glass film 'Love Lies Bleeding', a film that had yet to be released when this episode was recorded. This episode is pretty self explanitory. We talk about every single Coen Brothers directed project in order of release and he are all the titles and time codes for your viewing covinence. BLood Simple (2:11), Raising Arizona (6:38), Millers's Crossing (10:48), Barton Fink (14:31), The Hudsucker Proxy (18:19), Fargo (21:15), The Big Lebowski (26:42), Oh Brother Where Art Thou (36:35), The Man Who Wasn't There (41:59), Intolerable Cruelty (45:48), Lady Killers (50:10), No Country For Old Men (53:44), Burn After Reading (1:00:35), A Serious Man (1:06:31), True Grit (1:11:16), Inside LLewyn Davis (1:15:34), Hail Ceaser (1:20:31), The Ballad of Buster Scruggs (1:23:49), The Tragedy of Macbeth (1:26:50), and finally the newest release from specifically Ethan Coen Drive-Away Dolls (1:30:41)
While DRIVE-AWAY DOLLS is technically the first narrative feature for which Ethan Coen has taken a solo directing credit, in practice the new comedy is as much a collaboration, here with his wife and co-screenwriter Tricia Cooke, as the films he made with brother Joel before their current hiatus. So in honor of Coen's commitment to collaborative comedy, we're revisiting 1987's RAISING ARIZONA, the film that established the brothers' comedic voice following their neo-noir debut BLOOD SIMPLE, and whose madcap escapades and MacGuffin-chasing foreshadow Coen's latest cinematic caper. And in feedback, a returning favorite offers up a connection we missed in our recent pairing of THE LAST DETAIL and THE HOLDOVERS. Please share your comments, thoughts, and questions about RAISING ARIZONA, DRIVE-AWAY DOLLS, or anything else in the world of film, by sending an email to comments@nextpictureshow.net, or leaving a short voicemail at (773) 234-9730. Jason, Andy and Dana are back and you can tell they are a little rusty as they have early mic issues before they figure it out and tell you what they have been up to the last couple weeks. As a special Welcome Back bonus, we'll be posting the 1984 movie Blood Simple a little later today and then release a special non-1984 movie this weekend.
This week on the Exciting & New podcast, Jason, Andy and Dana discuss the 1984 Neo-Noir Coen Brothers movie Blood Simple. This is the first time out for the Coen's and it shows. This movie looks like it had a budget of about $50, and if you belive some of the stories, that $50 was hard earned. We know the Coens will go on to do amazing things, and a Coen-rewatch is certainly in Andy's future, but this one seems more like a college film than a theatrical release. But we get a first-time Frances McDormand, a pre-Cheers Nick Tortelli (Dana knows him better as Mel Horowitz) and super creepy M. Emmet Walsh in all his sleazy goodness. Also, we will be releasing a special non-1984 movie this weekend that Jason has been begging us to do. Will all that hype, can it stick the landing? You'll have to listen and find out.
This week on the Exciting & New podcast, the kids take a sick week, and repost their Porky's episode from 2 years in honor of Tony Ganios, otherwise known as Meat, who passed away today. Once the doctor clears us and we get off the pot and back on the pod, we will be back to 1984 movies with Blood Simple coming soon. RIP Meat.

Then, we talk about the long gestation period of the project, and its many iterations attached to various directors (including Mike Nichols, John Dahl, and Ben Stiller!).
