Tuberculosis is one of the worst murderers in the history of the world. It remains that way today — even though we have diagnostics and treatments that should have helped to decimate it. The challenge? The greed of the corporations that hold those technologies hostage to fees that low-income people and countries can't afford. Abdul reflects on the disease of poverty. He interviews bestselling author and YouTuber John Green about his quest to mobilize his platform to hold those corporations accountable.

Maybe you know Hank Green from Vlogbrothers or CrashCourse. Maybe he taught you something on TikTok. Maybe you've read one of his books. Or maybe you know him from about a dozen other things. Hank does a lot, so Sam and Deboki were psyched to get a chance to chat with him. Even more about Hank at https://hankgreen.com/
In 2007, brothers Hank and John Green lived thousands of miles apart, so they started posting video blogs to each other on a strange new platform called YouTube. People began tuning in, and the daily Vlogbrothers posts became an early viral hit. Over time, the brothers grew that single channel into a sprawling collection of businesses, including a production studio—Complexly—that makes some of the most entertaining educational content on the internet. They're also both hugely successful authors; John's young adult novel The Fault in Our Stars is one of the best-selling books of all time. With every success, Hank says he's asked himself, “What's exciting? What's causing you the most stress? Head in that direction.”See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
Hank Green is one of the first and most popular science communicators on YouTube, having started out with his brother, author John Green, on their channel Vlogbrothers, and growing an empire of science channels through his company, Complexly. Along the way, the two of them founded VidCon, now the largest online video conference in the world, and he's written two books, An Absolutely Remarkable Thing and A Beautifully Foolish Endeavor. He joined me to talk about all things science and YouTube, a little bit of politics and some surprising reasons to be optimistic about the world right now.Find more about Hank and his endeavors at his website: https://hankgreen.com/See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

For a show that runs on pure heart, there's no better star for our semi-centennial than Ms. Ruth Langmore. For an episode that runs on pure adoration, there's no better endearment than calling a semi-centennial a bi-centennial when one means 50 and the other, 200 (doesn't bi-centennial sound more like 50..?). For the best podcast on earth, there's no better honor than timing as good as this. Welcome to 50, thank you for 50, and you're welcome for 50. Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: The Many Faces of Effective Altruism, published by Devin Kalish on May 18, 2022 on The Effective Altruism Forum. Author's Note: This post based on a Discord rant Epistemic Status: Very very unrigorous, just a distillation of some things I've been thinking about recently that some of my friends encouraged me to post somewhere The Effective Altruism movement is, in my opinion, not a single subculture, but a coalition of several related ones that occupy a similar memespace, and often overlap. Recently I have been thinking about this undertheorized aspect of the movement, and wanted to share the beginnings of some distinctions that I see within the movement, and how these might be useful for understanding key things about it. Like all labeling schemes of this sort, this is also of limited value, will undoubtedly be controversial, especially when I get into my specific impressions of what fits where, and will probably be significantly shaped in various ways by my own personal sympathies. Nevertheless, and occasionally against my better judgement, I appreciate when other people make new labeling schemes like this, so I hope I can produce one that is valuable myself. My current thinking divides Effective Altruism into roughly six aesthetics/subcultures that seem meaningfully distinct: Wholesome Effective Altruism: This is the more infographic/nerdy stuff, often with an interest in popular appeal. It is also more concerned with political causes outside of the common EA priorities, and adheres to EA on top of this basically because doing good is good. Lots of sort of adjacent, mildly sympathetic non-EA media leans this way, like “The Good Place” or Vlogbrothers or Kurzgesagt. Think Future Perfect or Our World in Data for more directly movement aligned media. Example figure: Ezra Klein Emo Effective Altruism: Emphasizes feeling the appropriate weight from things like suffering and death, lots of the art associated with EA comes from this corner in some way. Made up of people who are real into stuff like “Fable of the Dragon Tyrant” and “500 Million, but not a Single One More” and “On Caring”. I also tend to group the more “emotionally intelligent” side of EA in here, though that's a debatable connection. Example figure: Eliezer Yudkowsky IDW Effective Altruism: This is the more centrist or right-leaning, anti-woke side of EA. Often embraces some version of Bryan Caplan's “EA is what SJ ought to be” idea. Sort of the right's answer to Wholesome EA, sharing a “doing good is good” type motivation, and also featuring figures who are sympathetic but not that centrally involved, like Steven Pinker and Coleman Hughes. Example figure: Sam Harris A-aesthetic Effective Altruism: Don't want to put out much of a vibe at all, and prefer purely unbiased, rigorous analysis. The source of many-a-long, nuanced document Effective Altruists are keen to cite (but perhaps uneager to read), though there is more accessible work that also fits this tone in my opinion. Relatively few people purely fit into this category, though many combine other categories with it, or occasionally wear the a-aesthetic hat. Example Figure: Hilary Greaves Contrarian Effective Altruism: This is not necessarily about liking unpopular ideas, but more about being super into weird ideas because they seem interesting and cool. Usually I picture the type of person who is into the simulation hypothesis and grabby aliens but doesn't seem that worried about them viscerally. Not many major figures in the movement seem to fit that well into this category, but I've met lots of people on the ground within EA clubs who fit here more solidly. Example figure: Robin Hanson Cheery utilitarian Effective Altruism: People in this category basically see some underlying tenants of utilitarianism as uncomplicatedly true and good without much o...

In yesterday's Coffee Break, I was spouting off about the idea of becoming an influencer being a goal. I have no problem with someone pursuing that dream, but if that's their only focus, that alone won't be enough to sustain a business. If they hit the jackpot and make big cash for a little while, I'm not going to say anything negative about it. I believe in luck, as much as I do work. The part I left out yesterday was the crucial role of community in the process of becoming an influencer. For clarification's sake, I want to say that I'm using the word influencer to identify a person who gets paid to influence their community to buy things or join things. I seriously believe that every human being has their own natural way of influencing, but I'm not talking about that here. Some of the online influencers I admire a lot are John and Hank Green. They didn't set out to become influential. They just found an interesting way to communicate with each other through a then-new medium called YouTube. Vlog Brothers gradually drew an audience as they shared things that were interesting to them and personal things going on and as the community grew, it developed an identity of its own - Nerdfighteria. It was an effect of their commitment to communicate on YouTube, but it wasn't an original goal. If you want to become an influencer, you'll have to make a commitment to creating experiences for people that they enjoy, benefit from, and want to have repeatedly. As more people discover you and your channels, there may be an opportunity to form. As you nurture that community and continue to find great ways to serve them through your creativity, your influence will grow and you may have the ability to make your influence an income stream. Check out the Coffee Break for more. Tuesdays are my busiest days but one of the activities from today that stood out was introducing a person who wants to start a social media management business to some of my favorite tools. The first one I showed her was Canva. I use Canva every day and have not had to use any of my expensive illustration and photo processing apps for a long time. Do you use Canva? #influencermarketing #contentmarketing #onlinecommunity
In this episode, I speak with Till Kraemer, who is a mathematician turned social entrepreneur, and is the co-founder general manager of the organisation ICE (Inter Cultural Education) based in Hong Kong. Till has a fascinating love of the world and intercultural exchanges, and he approaches all aspects of life with a curious eye. This approach is embedded in the foundation of the ICE organisation and in our discussion, Till shares a number of stories of the impact that these kinds of exchanges have not only had on him, but also the students and members of the community. Show Notes: Till shared with us his favourite podcast Dear Hank and John which addresses a variety of topics through two lenses: science and philosophy. He also recommended their YouTube channel, Vlogbrothers. A book that particularly made an impact in Till's life as a teenager was Roger Penroses's The Emperor's New Mind. A YouTube channel that he absolutely recommends is Geography Now which offers bite-sized engaging history and geography lessons about each country in the alphabet. To find out more about ICE you can check out their website, find them on LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram and an excellent Ted Talk on YouTube. To connect with Till, you can find him on LinkedIn. After taking the summer off from the live show, Jeff dives into the Fall season with an analysis of the American political scene, currently dominated by The Donald, of course. Could he really be president? Jeff says “no, but he is performing a great evolutionary service”. Much is made of the problem of the polarization of the left and right in American politics, and Donald Trump may be part of the solution. After all, polarization is a stage on the path of development. As Jeff says: The interesting thing about polarities is that once you get your thesis and antithesis well clarified then the next step is to create new synthesis. Thus you have Donald Trump and Bernie Sanders coming from opposite sides of the political spectrum arriving at two similar political goals. The first is a tax hike for the rich; the second is an end to cheap labor and trade deals. The other Republicans, financed by the wealthiest Americans, will not take these stands. [NOTE: since this recording, Jeb Bush has said he is open to higher taxes on the rich, strengthening the new synthesis.] One reason for Trump's success may be that we are craving candor and authenticity in our political candidates these days–or at least someone who's good at faking it. Hillary Clinton just wants a chance to show us her spontaneous side, her relatable personality. But is it really there? What is the “X factor” that Bill Clinton has, and even George W. Bush has, that Hillary and Jeb seem to lack? Speaking of lines of development, Ben Carson has gained a surprising lead in the polls, and many are wondering: how is it possible for a brilliant neurosurgeon to believe that the earth is 5000 years old? Integral has an answer for that. Also, a sympathetic perspective on Kim Davis, the clerk in Kansas who has become a right-wing hero for refusing to comply with the Supreme Court's ruling and issue marriage certificates to same sex couples. And we end with a three and a half minute prose poem of sorts from Hank, one half of the popular YouTube duo the Vlogbrothers, sent to us by friend of the show Max Johnson. It's a great meditation on impermanence. Send Jeff your comments and questions for the show. Record a voice message using the orange tab to the right, or just use the voice memo function on your smart phone and send to jeff@dailyevolver.com. TRANSCRIPT
Hank is one half of the popular YouTube duo VlogBrothers. The show is co-hosted with his brother John Green, author of the New York Times bestselling book The Fault in Our Stars. The show boasts a loyal group following, amounting to around 2.6 million viewers. The brothers are also the brains behind a fundraising campaign called "Project For Awesome," through which they're organizing the community to take over YouTube with charity work for a day. Hank is well-known for being an Internet entrepreneur, article writer/contributor to a variety of publications like the New York Times, Scientific American and Mental Floss. In addition to the successful Brotherhood 2.0 project, he's also produced science-based videos like the popular "SciShow" and "Crash Course." He is also the inventor of 2D-Glasses for those who have trouble watching 3-D movies; this is his least successful business venture to date, by the way. Speaking of merchandise, he also owns DFTBA records, an online store he co-founded with his friends. He's also an Emmy winner for his web-series "The Lizzie Bennet Diaries," a modern adaptation of Pride and Prejudice. Hank takes us into the creative process of producing a lot of successful video shows. The ideas and the content that he puts into each show shines with his dedication and passion for educating his followers and the deep relationships he has forged along the way. He loves creating new things that encourage discourse and having fun and that simply entertain the audience until they learn something. The man does not want to stop giving back what he knows and he will continue to influence the next generation with new products or topics that liven up their lives. Because of this, he is now redefining the meaning of cool by being 'on fleick' just the way he is.
