Guest Gina Alvarez, Executive Director of VSA Arts of Missouri / Living Arts Studio, shares details on how their group fosters and facilitates creativity in people of all levels of ability through mentorship, classes, and access to a creative workspace.
Growing up in West Virginia and orphaned at an early age, Linda Carmella Sibio started drawing at age 11. Since 1985, Linda has worked in various art media and performance art. Linda assisted in starting The Los Angeles Poverty Department - a performance troupe in Los Angeles' Skid Row, and has an interest in those living on the fringes of society, particularly those with mental illness. Her art demonstrates how those experiences effect culture as a whole. Linda moved to the desert 20 years ago after quietly slipping out of the psych ward of a Los Angeles-area hospital. In the desert, Linda has found a place where she can create in isolation. In addition to paintings and performance works, Linda created a workshop called The Insanity Principle, taking symptoms of insanity and transposing them into techniques for making experimental art. Linda teaches in the Hi-Desert, supported through Andrea Zittel's Hi-Desert Test Sites. Check the site in Fall 2018 for new dates. In this episode Linda also talks about her desert neighbors and a harrowing experience of being followed home after a night of meditation. Linda's work has been seen at the United Nations, Brussels Contemporary Art Fair, VSA Arts at the Kennedy Center, REDCAT in Los Angeles and more. She is represented by Andrew Edlin Gallery in New York where her latest work, 'The Economics of Suffering' as well as a performance piece titled, 'Emotional States of Zero' will be on exhibit beginning January 2019. A fundraiser for the exhibit, with limited capacity due to space, will be held in Los Angeles, with a reception afterward at a private residence, on Sunday September 16, 2018, from 2-4 p.m. If you are interested in attending the fundraiser or making a donation, please email: bezerkpro@gmail.com for more details and information. Luke Frazier, a rapidly rising star in the Pops world, has proven himself as both an innately musical conductor and a sensitive pianist. His commitment to re-envisioning pops programming has quickly established him as a dynamic force across the music community. Frazier has demonstrated his versatility and range by conducting in venues both grand and intimate, from Lincoln Center to Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center to the Rainbow Room. Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Marvin Hamlisch put it best, calling Frazier “so talented, and sensitive to every nuance.” As a testament to his mission to re-imagine pops programming, Frazier founded the American Pops Orchestra in 2015, presenting all original programming. This professional orchestra boasts outstanding musicians from New York and Washington DC, featuring leading Broadway singers, dancers, and celebrity performers. In only three seasons The American Pops Orchestra has already garnered rave reviews, including the following from The New York Times, “As much as any individual singer, what warmed the evening was the sumptuous lilt of The American Pops Orchestra, conducted by Luke Frazier.” His commitment to the American Songbook is also evident through his involvement on the Board of the Great American Songbook Foundation. In demand as a clinician, adjudicator, and speaker, Luke recently addressed the National Symphony Orchestra's “Summer Music Institute” students. He appeared as the Keynote Speaker for the National Society of Arts and Letters (NSAL) Award for Excellence in the Arts at the Kennedy Center and also addressed VSA Arts, an international organization for artists with disabilities. Mr. Frazier serves as the Artist in Residence with the DC Youth Orchestra and most recently presented a series concerts celebrating Ella Fitzgerald's birth. Mr. Frazier has worked with artists such as Wynton Marsalis, Renée Fleming, Chita Rivera, Rumer Willis, Andra Day, Darren Criss, Vanessa Williams, Liz Callaway, Brian Stokes Mitchell, Mo Rocca, Lea Salonga, Laura Osnes, Eric Owens, Marilyn Maye, Liza Minnelli, Rita Moreno, Lindsay Mendez, Michael Feinstein, Christine Ebersole, Elaine Paige, Arturo Sandoval, and Norm Lewis, among many others. In this episode, Luke shares his one way ticket to 10 years into the future. He also talks about the American Pops Orchestra, music today and the stimulating Washington, D.C. cultural landscape. Luke is just one of the extraordinary guests featured on The One Way Ticket Show, where Host Steven Shalowitz explores with his guests where they'd go if given a one way ticket, no coming back! Destinations may be in the past, present, future, real, imaginary or a state of mind. Steven's guests have included: Nobel Peace Prize Winner, President Jose Ramos-Horta; Legendary Talk Show Host, Dick Cavett; Law Professor, Alan Dershowitz; Broadcast Legend, Charles Osgood; International Rescue Committee President & CEO, David Miliband; Grammar Girl, Mignon Fogarty; Journalist-Humorist-Actor Mo Rocca; ; Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz, Jr.; Abercrombie & Kent Founder, Geoffrey Kent; Travel Expert, Pauline Frommer, as well as leading photographers, artists, writers and more.
Join host Amy Zellmer as she chats with author Tim Laskowski. Tim Laskowski was born and raised in Erie, Pennsylvania and has worked in social services for most of his adult life. He also has a PhD in English Literature. For 21 years, he was a case manager in Montana working with people with disabilities, many of which were TBI survivors. Currently, Tim lives in Prescott, Arizona and is the Program Manager for US VETS, a program that serves homeless veterans. Tim has served on the Board of Directors for the Montana Brain Injury Alliance and for VSA Arts of Montana, an organization that promotes art opportunities for people with disabilities. Tim is the author of the novel, Every Good Boy Does Fine, published by Southern Methodist University Press in 2003. Join host Sabrina Fritts for a heart-opening conversation with Lyena Strelkoff who found that her paralyzing injury liberated her from the paralysis of life. Here’s a link for Lyena's free gift and discover why forcing yourself to "be positive" is making things worse. Lyena Strelkoff is a transformation coach, storyteller, and speaker passionately dedicated to elevating the way humans respond to change, challenge, and adversity. When a hiking accident left her paralyzed at the age of 33, this lifelong dancer was surprised to see her so-called tragedy improving every aspect of her life, from her mental health to her personal relationships to her career. Inspired by this shocking -- and nearly immediate -- metamorphosis, she developed The Shero’s Way™, a systematic, feminized approach to adversity that turns challenges into the catalysts that catapult us upward. She holds a Master’s Degree in Human Development, coaches women nationwide, and leads private retreats and workshops. She is a contributing essayist to the popular book Dancing at the Shame Prom and the subject of an award-winning short documentary. She is also a critically-acclaimed storyteller whose autobiographical one-woman show, “Caterpillar Soup” has enjoyed five national tours and an honor by VSA Arts, an affiliate of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Lyena has appeared with Jane Fonda, Marisa Tomei, and Rosario Dawson among others, and has been featured in newspapers across the country including the Los Angeles Times, heard on National Public Radio and numerous podcasts.
