“Yeah, for me personally, I love anything that tells me... I find myself drawn to shows that are like, ‘We're gonna make something interesting that's not interesting at all.' And then they're like, ‘Let's talk about broccoli.' And then they're like, ‘Let's talk about cement.' And then the next episode is, ‘Let's talk about neon.' And I just love that. Maybe they do the history of it. Maybe they weave in the person who discovered neon. Can you discover neon? I think you can, because it's on the periodic table of elements. Might need to be manipulated. Either way. These are the kind of things, these are shows that I find myself going back to time and time again.” – Arielle Nissenblatt This episode's guest is a Big Fan of Podcasts™ and the podcast industry. She's the founder of EarBuds Podcast Collective, a podcast recommendation newsletter, the host of several podcasts about the podcast industry, including a show about podcast recommendations and a show about podcast trailers, and regularly appears on podcasts about podcasts to talk about – you guessed it – podcasts. She's on the Board of Governors of The Podcast Academy and speaks at conferences around the world on podcast marketing and community building. (0:00:01) - Exploring the Power of PodcastingWe start things off with Arielle's early experiences with sound, and particularly the impression that radio made on her compared to streaming platforms like Spotify. “I think the excitement for me about radio is the serendipity,” she explains. “A song that I would skip if it came up on my Spotify, I would not skip. I would be more excited about it, even if it were, like, a mainstream song.” She recalls how she first discovered podcasting in 2014, and how she quickly learned that the key to a compelling podcast is a hook, whether it's an engaging topic or an engrossing story. “He eulogizes Neanderthals,” she says about a favorite episode of Mo Rocca's podcast Mobituaries, “When did we learn about them? How did we first discover them? How do they contribute to how we view humans today? So what I like about this is, yes, there's storytelling involved. He brings us in with a story.”(0:09:44) - The Impact of Podcasting EvolutionOur discussion turns to the topic of podcasting during the pandemic, and the mark COVID-19 left on the industry. “A lot of great shows came out of that and still exist to this day,” she says, “and a lot of shows came out of that and are done and they're pandemic-era shows.” We talk about the challenges of building an audience today compared to those early days of podcasting, and how much a good podcast can

SEASON 3 EPISODE 109: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:45) SPECIAL COMMENT: How do you remove a Senate Democratic Leader? CAN you remove a Senate Democratic Leader? Oh my, yes. You can do it before the top of the hour. Certainly before tomorrow. I'll lay it out for you. It can happen provided you note Schumer is having a book event tonight at the Enoch Pratt Central Library in Baltimore at 7 PM. It takes a little guts. Takes angry civilians. Takes the 36 Senate Democrats and one Independent whom Chuck Schumer betrayed to stick their necks out again. Takes the whole lot of them to run the minor risk of fracturing the Senate caucus or the Democratic Party - but why not? It's not like they're doing anything. Not when TWO new polls suggest Democrats are fed up with this group, that vast majorities demand RESISTANCE to Trump, not bipartisan crap, that the leader who best represents the ideals of the party is AOC (10%) as opposed to Obama (4%) and Schumer (2%) and worst of all - nobody (30%). We should be talking about resistance, about Trump being twelve points underwater on the economy, about Musk retweeting the claim that Hitler didn't commit the holocaust, his public sector workers did, about Trump beginning to defy court orders to illegally deport people to third-party strongman states. But we're not - because of Chuck Schumer. Time for him to GO. B-Block (23:45) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: The world is coming apart and Politico devoted its lead 26 paragraphs to a journalism party. Alina Habba is a moron, Part 9,763. And Marco Rubio and the "president" of El Salvador are mocking American law. See you at the World Court, boys. C-Block (33:40) THINGS I PROMISED NOT TO TELL: I'm under the weather and that always flashes me back to the day I was 21 and my doctor since my childhood gave me some muscle relaxants without warning me of the side effects. Hilarity ensued.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Kamala and Tim are in their honeymoon period as a presidential ticket. They are brat. They are joy. They are vibes. They are happy. Why the hell would they throw away all this momentum, just so they could tell Americans where they stand on issues that matter? Humorist and Journalist Mo Rocca's new book is called Roctogenarians: Late in Life Debuts, Comebacks, and Triumphs, which spotlights people like Colonel Sanders, Frank Lloyd Wright and Henri Matisse, whose accomplishments as older folks demonstrate that age is indeed just a number. He joins to share stories and insights from the book, and listeners call in to share their "late in life" triumphs.
Eighty has been the new 60 for about 20 years now. In fact, there have always been late-in-life achievers, those who declined to go into decline just because they were eligible for Social Security. Journalist, humorist, and history buff Mo Rocca teamed up with Jonathan Greenberg to introduce us to the people past and present who peaked when they could have been puttering—breaking out as writers, selling out concert halls, attempting to set land-speed records—and in the case of one 90-year-old tortoise, becoming a first-time father. (Take that, Al Pacino!) Popular “CBS Sunday Morning” correspondent and frequent “Wait Wait Don't Tell Me” panelist Rocca, author of the bestselling Mobituaries, comes to Commonwealth Club World Affairs in San Francisco to share inspiring stories that celebrate the triumphs of people who made their biggest marks late in life. His new book, Roctogenarians, is a collection of entertaining and unexpected profiles of these unretired titans—some long gone (a cancer-stricken Henri Matisse, who began work on his celebrated cut-outs when he could no longer paint), some very much still living (Rita Moreno, the EGOT who's still got it). The amazing cast of characters also includes Mary Church Terrell, who at 86 helped lead sit-ins at segregated Washington, D.C., lunch counters in the 1950s, and Carol Channing, who married the love of her life at 82. Then there's Peter Mark Roget, who began working on his thesaurus in his twenties and completed it at 73 (because sometimes finding the right word takes time.) With all due respect to the Golden Girls, some people will never be content sitting out on the lanai. (P.S., actor Estelle Getty was 62 when she got her big break. And yes, she's in the book.) This special episode comes from the audiobook edition of ROCTOGENARIANS, a brand-new collection of stories from Mo Rocca that celebrates the triumphs of people who made their biggest marks late in life. Chances are, you know something about the life of Laura Ingalls Wilder. If, like sixty million other people, you once enjoyed the Little House books, you'll know that the series breaks off when Laura, at eighteen, marries Almanzo Wilder and leaves her parents to start her own life and her own family in her own little house. But Laura Ingalls Wilder didn't publish Little House in the Big Woods until she was sixty-five. So what happened in the intervening years? And how did the heroine of the books become the beloved author who, many years later, told these charming stories? ROCTOGENARIANS is available wherever hardcover, ebooks and audiobooks are sold. In the world of journalism and literature, there's nothing quite like the obituary. Sometimes called the first draft of history, an obituary can function as a love letter, a condemnation -- but, perhaps more than anything, a portrait of a person gone from this mortal plane. In the first part of this special two-part series, Ben, Noel and Max join the legendary journalist, author, correspondent and podcaster Mo Rocca, host of Mobituaries, to learn more about this unique genre of literature, from the history of obituaries to the art of crafting them. (Spoiler: Mo extemporaneously composes the definitive obituary of the pager in this one.)See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
