For episode 160 of the podcast, join Rain Phoenix at Licorice Pizza as she hosts an engaging conversation with legendary songwriter Diane Warren and rising musician Mergui. This episode offers a deep dive into Diane's illustrious career, her creative process, and her collaboration with Mergui on the song "Criminal." The discussion provides unique perspectives on the music industry, including insights from one of modern music’s most celebrated songwriters. IN THIS EPISODE:  [5:05] Diane Warren's early musical influences [11:10] Writing I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing and OSCAR nominations [13:00] Diane launches Mergui [15:28] Diane's versatility across musical genres [20:00] Mergui’s insights on sampling Elton John’s song KEY TAKEAWAYS:  Diane Warren's journey into songwriting began at a young age, sparked by her fascination with record credits. She would study the names of songwriters on albums, dreaming of seeing her own name there one day. This early passion and determination set her on a path to becoming one of the most successful songwriters in the industry. Despite the challenges faced by women in the music industry, Diane never let her gender define her capabilities. Inspired by trailblazers like Carole King, she pursued her career with confidence, never doubting her potential to succeed as a songwriter. Collaboration with artists like Mergui showcases Diane and Mergui's ability to adapt and thrive in different musical genres. Diane’s intuitive sense for matching songs with the right artists has led to successful partnerships, allowing her to continue creating timeless music across various styles. It’s important for songwriters to find the right artist to sing and produce their songs, someone who will honor and preserve the meaning and the music. That’s when the magic happens. She has penned nine #1 and thirty-three top 10 hits on the Billboard Hot 100 and is tied for having written the most #1 songs as a sole writer in Billboard history. She was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2001 and received the prestigious Johnny Mercer Award from the organization in June 2024. She has received 16 Academy Award nominations, is a GRAMMY winner with 15 nominations, an EMMY winner, and is a two-time Golden Globe winner whose songs have been featured in more than 150 films. In November 2022, Warren became the first songwriter in history to receive an Honorary Oscar, as voted on by the Academy's Board of Governors. She recently wrote the original song "The Fire Inside," performed by Becky G for the film Flamin' Hot, directed by Eva Longoria, which marked her 15th Oscar nomination. She most recently wrote the original song “The Journey” performed by H.E.R. for the feature film The Six Triple Eight directed by Tyler Perry which marked her 16th Oscar nomination. She is the sole owner of her publishing company Realsongs, the most successful female-owned and operated business in the music industry. Warren is a recipient of a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, a nod to her legendary career, having worked with many of today's most popular artists, including Beyoncé, Lady Gaga, Taylor Swift, H.E.R., Snoop Dogg, Paloma Faith, Jon Batiste, Maren Morris, John Legend, Christina Aguilera, Kelly Clarkson, Andra Day, Justin Bieber, Jennifer Hudson and Janelle Monáe, in addition to having written songs for iconic artists such as Whitney Houston, Cher, Celine Dion, Mariah Carey, Dolly Parton, Reba McEntire, and many more.   Mergui has made it his mission to push the limits of modern pop music. He’s accomplished some incredible feats such as opening for Bruno Mars and Maroon 5. His talent has been recognized by publications such as Rolling Stone, Billboard, Wonderland Magazine, and Notion. Drawing inspiration from the rich tapestry of early 20th-century Italian opera and the nostalgic allure of ‘70s AM pop, Mergui’s sophomore EP Shadows of Blue was a remarkable fusion of influences. Notable tracks from the EP include the Elton John-approved “Cry,” and “Happy Now?”, which he performed on The Kelly Clarkson Show and NBC’s The TODAY Show, resulting in the track skyrocketing to the Top 10 on the U.S. iTunes Singer/Songwriter charts. Mergui’s music has been featured in top-notch editorial playlists across digital service platforms including Spotify’s New Music Friday (US & Global), Chill Pop, New Pop Picks, and Just Good Music. Mergui’s unguarded sense of vulnerability shines through in his art, landing him a coveted spot on People Magazine’s Emerging Artists of 2024 list. Following a successful tour with Forest Blakk and a collaboration with Sam Feldt in the latter half of 2024, Mergui is ready to take 2025 by storm with the release of his latest EP Nobody Really Knows.

Art ain't just about pretty pictures—it's about truth, pain, and unfinished stories. In Exhibiting Forgiveness, André Holland takes on the role of Tarrell, a rising painter whose past comes back to haunt his canvas when his estranged father La'Ron (John Earl Jelks) suddenly reappears. What follows is a raw, deeply personal journey of trauma, redemption, and the kind of family wounds that even time can't erase. Directed by Titus Kaphar, a celebrated artist making his feature debut, this film isn't just a visual masterpiece—it's an emotional gut punch. With Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor and Andra Day bringing powerhouse performances, the story forces us to ask: Can you ever truly forgive someone who broke you? And if you do, are you actually healing—or just painting over the cracks? In this episode of TruVue Podcast, we break down how this introspective drama blends art with real-life struggles, creating a film that feels more like an open wound than just another family story. We do also talk about chapter 21 of Chalice of the Gods, as well as continuing to talk about our future and plans for the podcast. As of right now, new episodes of Prophecy Radio will air every other week, and we'll still keep our discussions PG-13. We are so excited to talk about these casting choices! Andra Day is absolute perfect embodiment of Athena (we're both in awe). Tamara Smart absolutely looks the part of Thalia Grace, and we can't wait to see how she chooses to play Thalia. Lance Reddick's replacement for Zeus is… We will definitely get at least one episode of season 2 in 2025! Chalice of the Gods refresher (00:26:36) Percy needs to complete 3 quests to get letters so he can join Annabeth at New Rome University. Ganymede, Zeus' cupbearer, to finds the chalice of the gods. He suspects Hebe and Iris. They find a chalice-less Hebe (and her flock of chickens) at her arcade, and after a little creative trickery by Annabeth, our trio learns where they might find Iris. Meet Blanche, daughter of Iris, who loves all things monochrome and death. She promises to introduce them to her mother if Grover poses for some photos. Iris is desperate for her child's approval, so she listens to our favorite trio, and tells them she has a hunch. She won't share that hunch, however, unless our trio does a little quest for her first. While questing, Annabeth befriends a river, Percy almost drowns, Grover gets chased by snakes. Percy gives us his (arguably) most romantic moment yet, and saves himself from mortal peril. Once they return Iris' staff to her, clean as a whistle, she lets them know the chalice is in Greenwich in the possession of someone named Gary, and hands them a vial of pure nectar to help in locating the famous drinking vessel. Chalice of the Gods discussion (00:34:26) Grover arrives to Percy's swim meet in some very specific regalia. Percy is forced to look at Blanche's dreary photos of Grover appearing dead amongst very dead-looking nature. Grover had planned to give one of these photos to Juniper for her Bloom Day present, but she didn't react well to the repeated mentioning of Blanche. Percy advises that Grover admit his stupidity in this moment, and apologize to Juniper. Percy notes that, next to the Greek gods, he's possibly the worst person to give relationship advice. Grover asked the cloud nymphs about Greenwich village, scoping out the scene before they go adventuring there, and they admit to some weird energy around Washington Square Park. While getting Juniper's Bloom Day present right is important, Grover is more concerned with how things are going to work once Percy and Annabeth run off to New Rome University. Percy reassures our favorite satyr that they need him as much as he needs them. They couldn't survive without Grover in their lives. Favorite lines and favorite moments. Feedback! Thank you so much to everyone for all the kinds words on our return. It really means the world to us. Still figuring out some work flow issues created by the change in tools on the app used to create podcasts. However, let me get into something about soc med/content/podcasts/vlogs that the recent Marlon Wayans vs Vlad TV conflict, on X, revealed that everyone should take into consideration. This episode also includes a few thoughts on Lee Daniels' latest film on Netflix, The Deliverance, that is really more of a reaction than a full-on review. My thoughts are with stars Andra Day, Mo'Nique, Glenn Close, Caleb McLaughlin and even Omar Epps. Wood also tackles another Club Shay Shay guest in Tyrese's current interview, but so many other things overshadowed his newly released "love" music RnB album Beautiful Pain. However, the Marlon & Vlad topic sheds some light on why.

It's a 50-50 week on Spoilerpiece, as one of the movies we watch is crap, and one is a joy from start to finish. First, the crap, because we didn't want to end on a sour note: Lee Daniels' THE DELIVERANCE (2:12), a derivative dumpster fire of a possession story cribbed from better possession stories. What makes it so awful, though? Glad you asked! Every character but one in this movie is an asshole. Like, a serious asshole. Andra Day's Ebony? Asshole. Glenn Close as her mother, Alberta? Asshole. Mo'Nique as the world's meanest social worker? Total asshole. We at Spoilerpiece don't usually need to root for a character, but when you're watching a movie and hope the demon wins, something is amiss. But then there's the salve: MOUNTAINS (26:10), director and co-writer Monica Sorelle's drama about a Haitian immigrant demolition worker living in Miami (Atibon Nazaire), his wife (Sheila Anozier), and their very American son (Chris Renois). All the bad vibes from THE DELIVERANCE are instantly erased! Praise Jesus! (If you have the misfortune of seeing THE DELIVERANCE, you'll understand.) And over on Patreon, our August poll winner is NEVER SAY NEVER AGAIN, the non-Eon Bond film featuring Sean Connery's return as 007.

It was another big week for a franchise this weekend as “Alien: Romulus” premiered and took the top spot at the box office. While the film came nowhere near “Deadpool & Wolverine,” the film topped $40 million domestic, a respectable number for an R-rated movie. Co-hosts Bruce Miller and Terry Lipshetz both saw the film and shared their thoughts on where the film fits with the others in the franchise that began back in 1979 with “Alien.” Another horror movie is about to drop, this time on Netflix. The Deliverance, directed by Lee Daniels, got a limited release in theaters and will drop on the streaming service on Aug. 30. The film stars Andra Day, Glenn Close, Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor and Mo'Nique, and is inspired by a true story. PBS continues to produce programs highlighting the geniuses of Hollywood, and the next is “Blake Edwards: A Love Story in 24 Frames” that premieres Aug. 27. We have an interview with Lesley Ann Warren, who talks about her experience with Edwards. Finally, if you watched “Tiger King” — and who didn’t watch it? — then you’ll want to catch the latest documentary from Eric Goode, “Chimp Crazy” on HBO and Max. The four episodes that began dropping weekly on Aug. 18 look at the people raising chimpanzees in captivity, and the efforts by PETA to stop them. Contact us! We want to hear from you! Email questions to podcasts@lee.net and we'll answer your question on a future episode! About the show Streamed & Screened is a podcast about movies and TV hosted by Bruce Miller, a longtime entertainment reporter who is now the editor of the Sioux City Journal in Iowa and Terry Lipshetz, a senior producer for Lee Enterprises based in Madison, Wisconsin.
