We set out to make a Michigan Bucket List show and ended up with a guest list that is all over the map and book-ended by two well-known names, one in the travel industry, and one for abiding while creating an incredible theatrical destination for all to enjoy. We were pleased as punch to confirm an interview with Pauline Frommer. Yes, of that Frommer family, the kind of kings of travel publications. We were interested to hear some of her experiences around Michigan as a travel expert, and what she sees trending in the next few years. She did not disappoint. Frommer is the Co-President of FrommerMedia, Editorial Director of Frommer's Guidebooks, author of the best-selling "Frommer's EasyGuide to New York City" and "Frommer's New York City Day by Day", and co-host of "The Travel Show" You see what I'm saying? This woman is an expert. Then we turn closer to home, and visit with our friend, and radio legend, Mary Ellen Murphy. This award-winning DJ hosts The Morning Show on WGHN in Grand Haven. Passionate about the Tri-Cities region, which also includes Spring Lake and Ferrysburg, Mary Ellen shares her thoughts on 'beach time' plus what she loves about this area. One thing I love about Mary Ellen is her fantastic studio at WGHN, which looks directly out over the Channel and boardwalk in GH. You can see what she sees on their live camera link here. Pro beach-going move: check out their OTHER cam for live beach conditions, so you know before you go.An old friend then calls in, all the way from Savannah Georgia. We first met Matt DeWitt at the bar he used to own in Ishpeming, a little gem of a spot called Brogie's that served one hell of a Bloody Mary. May have been named a top glass by a couple of food writers we know. Anywho, Matt has been having quite an adventure the last few years, working for that crazy baseball team, the Savannah Bananas. We get to hear all about what that's been like, plus what he misses most about the Upper Peninsula. It may, or may not, be a certain sausage. EDIT: I almost forgot! Matt and his wife EV have started a new website, crabrankoons.com. They rank crab rangoons and all derivatives. Yes, you cannot make this up. These are the people we love at Behind the Mitten. Finally our last interview, and yes, it's a big one. Jeff Daniels took time to chat with little old us about his incredible Purple Rose Theatre."Founded in 1991 by acclaimed actor and Chelsea native Jeff Daniels, The Purple Rose Theatre Company is a creative home for theatre artists to define our collective Midwestern voice. It is a place for emerging talent and seasoned professionals to learn more about and to practice their craft; a place for patrons of the arts to laugh, cry, and perhaps even learn something new," according to their website. We learned it is so much more than that, not just to Daniels, but to the Chelsea community that has been truly transformed by its presence over the last thirty years. Daniels' passion for theatre and acting is pretty evident, but what I found most interesting is that The Purple Rose focuses on laughter, the best medicine, and developing hilarious plays from the ground up, all to bring some much-needed joy to our world. How awesome is that?Their newest play had me giggling just reading the summary. Directed by Rhiannon Raglan, and written by David MacGregor, "The Anti Christ Cometh" premiers to the world on March 22 and runs at the theatre through May 25. "The Antichrist Cometh is a comedy about a happily married man who discovers that he might be the Antichrist. Will he be able to enjoy a small dinner party with his loving wife, former college roommate, and his roommate's devoutly religious fiancée? Or will their home-cooked meal usher in the Apocalypse?"Daniels goes a little bit deeper with us, and let me say, this sounds like quite the dinner party, and one you don't want to miss. Remember, it's a comedy! Chelsea is a charming, lively downtown with great restaurants and shopping, so when you go to a show, plan on making a day of it.It was a pleasure talking with Mr. Daniels, who at the end of the day, is just another Michigander like the rest of us. It's his passion for this project, for the Purple Rose and all that it might mean, that sets him apart. We salute his years of hard work building this Michigan gem. Daniels is also a big Lions fan and attended a few games this year, so you know we had to ask him about that. Who could we possibly have on the show next week? Who knows! But stay tuned to Behind the Mitten to find out!Follow John and Amy:Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/behindthemittenTwitter at @BehindTheMittenInstagram at @BehindTheMitten

Hamad is a Qatari comedian who grew up in Ireland, a rare commodity in the Middle East or anywhere else. Having spent time in Qatar, Southern Ireland and the US he's had a unique opportunity to experience the diversity in cultures, which helped form his identity and approach to comedy. With a broad repertoire, his experience ranges from stand-up comedy (his life's passion and deepest love!), to being a keen ambassador for children's charities, cancer awareness and local franchises, VIP corporate events and conferences, and producing online shows. Despite the humor, Hamad is quite an intense character with a very serious side, and has a strong desire to teach, help, assist and educate, all common themes in his social commentary. Obviously not a run of the mill kid, he believes in freedom of speech, saying it as it is, and spreading ones wings. Known internationally for hitting a Burger King drive-through on a camel no less, Hamad likes to break down barriers and boundaries. Where's the humor in staying confined?! On this episode, Hamad shares his one way ticket to a complete symbiotic relationship between man and technology. He also highlights what people should know about Qatar, the breathtaking Qatar National Museum, the 2022 World Cup, if there's such a thing as Qatari humor, and more. Hamad is just one of the exceptional individuals featured on the podcast where Host Steven Shalowitz explores with his guest where they would go if given a one way ticket, no coming back! Michael Fabiano is a distinguished international opera singer. As a tenor, he regularly performs at leading opera houses worldwide. In 2014, Michael won both the Richard Tucker Award and the Beverly Sills Artist Award, making him the first singer to win both prestigious honors in the same year. His musical artistry is matched by his passionate commitment to arts education. Michael is the Co-Founder & Executive Director of ArtSmart - a non-profit that transforms the lives of youth in under-resourced communities across the US through tuition-free music lessons and mentorship by paid, professional artists. While opera is his passion, Michael's large focus is building a better future for Americans seeking greater upward mobility. It is his belief that the arts is one of the great unifiers and a catalyst for success in life. Additionally, as an entrepreneur, Michael is a partner in Resonance, an operating system for creative organizations and businesses that streamlines everything from payroll to spreadsheets and email to employee communication. He is an active private pilot, a life-long baseball umpire, and writes extensively in blogs and articles about the American educative experience. On this episode Michael shares his one way ticket to Mars. Plus, in our sweeping conversation, he highlights why arts education is critical to a child's development, and why college campuses should be marketplaces of ideas (which he believes they're currently not). Andrew Schofield is a designer, entrepreneur and Founder and Creative Director of Flyypod®. This follows a career as a fashion designer and creative director for some of Australia's leading brands including SABA -among the most fashion forward brands of its day. Armed with a passion to fuse a luxury sensibility with ethical credentials, and in the process creating a product offering that was both compelling and intrinsically appealing, his journey was to find the right medium to express this through and take it to market, sourcing highly specialized and refined pieces from artisans in the most unusual corners of the world while blending this with high end fashion and objet d'art. An ethical luxury concept was born unlike any other for its time. Twenty-six years later HUSK has solidified its position as one of Australia's most iconic and luxury fashion retail brands. Continuing on from this very successful venture he went on to open an equally captivating retail experience called “egg”. This was a lifestyle store with a holistic approach to the world of nesting and the giving of life itself. With a florist and a day spa, this concept was also one of a kind. In 2005 he joined the Voyager group and spent ten years traveling, creating and designing new brands and developing relationships with a host of retail giants and manufacturers alike. This led to being appointed men's design director for both Trent Nathan and Wayne Cooper. Sourcing styles and inspiration from around the globe and dealing at a nuts & bolts level with department store teams taught Andrew the craft of wholesale selling and product development at a commercial level. With over 30 years of experience in the fashion industry, Andrew's knowledge of garment design is unsurpassed. He has an acute understanding of construction and manufacturing. After a lifetime spent travelling the globe in search of savoir-faire, influence and innovation, Flyypod®, was born. Combining the worlds of fashion and industrial design, he's created a sophisticated collection offering consumers a more stylish way to travel without sacrificing the planet. On this episode Andrew shares his one way ticket to travel the world in the early 1990s. He also takes us into the world of Flyypod® which creates innovative, sustainable and highly-designed travel products that are carefully crafted from recycled materials using ethical manufacturing processes. One product in the line is the world's first sustainably designed sleeping bag for air travel that offers hygienic warmth in transit, and fits over any airplane seat. In our conversation, Andrew also offers tips for how best to dress when traveling, how to pack, and how fragrance can be used to keep memories alive from ones journey. So if you have a kind of existential crisis, Vrindavan can give you the clarity of who you are and what you're meant to do and be”. For Divya, what she also loves about Vrindavan is that “It has this very special sweetness in the atmosphere. It's saturated with spiritual energy that you cannot really explain”. Plus, Divya walks us through the ancient Indian healing system that is Ayurveda, and highlights her books, restaurant and product line. Tamar Haspel writes the James Beard Award-winning Washington Post column Unearthed, which covers the intersection of food and science: How what we eat affects us and our planet. She's also written for Discover, Vox, Slate, Fortune, Eater, and Edible Cape Cod. Together with journalist Mike Grunwald, Tamar co-hosts the Climavores podcast, which takes a good, hard, entertaining look at food's impact on climate and environment. When she's tired of the heavy lifting of journalism, she gets dirty. She and her husband, Kevin Flaherty, grow their own tomatoes, catch their own fish, hunt their own venison, and raise their own chickens. If she tells you a wild mushroom is OK to eat, you can believe her. And her book, TO BOLDLY GROW, will convince you to try it. On this episode, Tamar shares her one way ticket, with her husband Kevin, to Cape Cod, to eat “first hand food” -- where every day they eat one food they grew, hunted or fished. This entire journey is captured in her phenomenally written book, TO BOLDLY GROW, which we discuss. During the conversation, Tamar also shares the joy and satisfaction for continuously being on the steep part of the learning curve, why human nutrition is incredibly difficult to study, that there's no taste difference between fresh eggs and store bought eggs, why gardening is even more local than politics, the best way to forage for food in a city, and more. A Distinguished Scholar in North American History at McGill University currently living in Jerusalem, Gil Troy is an award-winning American presidential historian and a leading Zionist activist. In the Foreword to Troy's book, The Zionist Ideas: Visions for the Jewish Homeland – Then, Now, Tomorrow, Natan Sharansky writes: “This magnificent work is the perfect follow-up to Arthur Hertzberg's classic The Zionist Idea. Combining, like Hertzberg, a scholar's eye and an activist's ear, Gil Troy demonstrates that we now live in a world of Zionist Ideas, with many different ways to help Israel flourish as a democratic Jewish state.” Troy's latest book which he penned with Sharansky, is Never Alone: Prison, Politics, and My People. Recently designated an Algemeiner J-100, one of the top 100 people “positively influencing Jewish life,” Troy wrote The Age of Clinton: America in the 1990s, and ten other books on the American presidency. One leading historian called Age of Clinton “the best book on the man and his times.” Troy edited and updated another classic, the multi-volume History of American Presidential Campaigns, originally edited by Arthur M. Schlesinger, Jr. and Fred Israel. He is now writing new essays on the 2012 and 2016 elections. Troy's book Moynihan's Moment: America's Fight against Zionism as Racism, describes the fall of the UN, the rise of Reagan and the spread of Anti-Zionism. Jewish Ideas Daily designated it one of 2012's “best books.” He appeared as a featured commentator on CNN's popular multipart documentaries, The Eighties, The Nineties, and The 2000s. He has been interviewed on most major North American TV and Radio networks. Troy has published essays in the American, Canadian, and Israeli media, including writing essays for the New York Times' “Campaign Stops” in 2012 and 2016. He wrote a weekly column for the Daily Beast, “Secret Lives,” putting current events in historical perspective, and writes a weekly column for the Jerusalem Post. On this episode, Troy shares his one way ticket to a “Free Marketplace of Ideas”. In the course of our sweeping conversation, he shares the importance of listening generously vs. listening censoriously, how racialism is spreading in America today where people are defined by the color of their skin and not the content of their character, and how the word “Zionism” has sadly become hijacked. Plus, Troy points to what every successful President should possess, why there were actually six George W. Bush presidencies, and the “secret sauce” of Bill Clinton. Gil Troy is just one of the engaging personalities featured on the podcast where Host Steven Shalowitz explores with his guests where they would go if given a one way ticket, no coming back.
