James has a fun conversation with the East Coast based performer. YawnyBlew is the brainchild of Brooklyn-based songwriter Johny Gonzalez. Debuting in 2020, YawnyBlew was initially a vehicle to showcase music during the global pandemic, but eventually evolved into a vehicle for self discovery, artist expression and industry reform for the Grammy and NME nominated creative. Beginning his professional songwriting career in 2017, Yawny scored his first placement “Light It All Up” for the television series Empire. Produced by Rodney Jerkins, the protest anthem was featured in season 3 and sung by Rumer Willis. He would go on to pen three additional songs that season for Jussie Smollett, a major win for Yawny, a queer boy from The Bronx, NY who dreamed of uplifting others like himself with his music. In the years since, Yawny has been working hard behind the scenes writing for the likes of Keiynan Lonsdale, Dyllon Burnside, Maeta, Cocoa Sarai and Cam Anthony. He would be one of the key creatives behind Thai Pop singer Pyra, who's music has been called “dystopian pop” and features themes of feminism, self discovery, queer exploration and more. Their work together scored several NME Award nominations in 2022. Later that same year he would mentor under Pharrell Williams while crafting songs for TikTok star Marley Bleu. As YawnyBlew, he unapologetically champions body positivity and queerness on songs like “Can't Compete,” and “Curious?” made in collaboration with Brooklyn based multi-hyphenate Tarik “amir.” Carroll. Their collaborative debut DREAMBIIG was released in Oct 2023. Elsewhere on solo songs like “driveslow,” Yawny talks about figuring out life on your own terms while not being afraid to live authentically. Following the launch of his podcast BIIGGER THAN OUR DREAMS in 2022, Yawny has been stepping out more into the public speaking realm, discussing issues that directly affect marginalized creatives and how they show up in the world. His abilities to tell other's stories through his journalist works (The Source Magazine, The Music Times) and podcast endeavors caught the attention of tech giant META, where Yawny serves as a Music Coordinator and communication strategist for Meta's Music. yawnyblew.com
MAYA is opening in several theaters and VOD on January 26th, so I thought it would be fun to re-release this episode. Social impact films are increasingly more common, something I imagine that I'll highlight more as we go through season 2, and MAYA is a good example of a film touching on an important issue. You can here for more information on screenings: https://www.artists4change.org/Enjoy and see you on Tuesday, January 23rd.BenI talk with Julia Verdin, the multi-hyphenate writer and director of the new film MAYA.When you think of a social impact film, you may think school project. But in your her new film MAYA, Julia put in the research and the dedication to her craft to make sure you'll learn something and be deeply entertained. MAYA had its world premiere at the Raindance Film Festival in London in October, and opens in select theaters and video in demand in late January, 2024. It deals gently with the topic of sex trafficking, and some of the acting performances, especially Rumer Willis, has stuck with me, along with the score and certainly the direction. We discuss her career, how to break into social impact filmmaking, the challenges of casting real-life, say, police officers, and the importance of keeping a positive attitude. As you'll hear from Julia, changing the world for the better is certainly difficult, but it doesn't mean it can't be fun. Ok, so we're watching "The House Bunny" this episode and we didn't realize how many people were actually in this movie. Anna Faris, Emma Stone, Colin Hanks, Kat Dennings, Rumer Willis, Kathatine McPhee, and there are more. It's a cute little comedy that has more heart than you would think based on the trailer and promotional material. Plus, Faris always delivers in this type of comedy. We pair it with Dr. G Dry Riesling, which is super light and bright. We were completely shocked. It's great. As a bonus there is a cute little bunny on the label.Metacritic Score: 55/100Movie Sync Notes: We rented "The House Bunny" on Amazon Prime Video. We start "The House Bunny" 4:37 into the pod, and push play on part two 35:07 into the pod.

I met Alex Wyse 3 or 4 years ago after an event and we became quick friends. Aside from being hilarious, he has such a wealth of experience and the perspective he's gained from all the work he's done is so informative and, I think, helpful for anyone who's trying to figure out how to navigate a career in entertainment. He's worked on and off-broadway, in television, film, as a producer and most recently he and his writing partner, Wesley Taylor, released the third season of their award winning web series INDOOR BOYS. I thought this would be a perfect time to sit down and reflect with Alex on where he's at. He was pretty insistent with me that this not be a rundown of his resume, which I was thrilled to hear. I wasn't quite sure where the conversation would take us, but we found ourselves talking about self-worth, the definition of success, creating your own path, mothers and sons, and much much more. Wether you know Alex or not, I think you're really going to come to appreciate what's he's got to share. On television, Wyse has appeared in multiple roles since 2010 including Bored to Death, Switched at Birth, The Bold and the Beautiful, Marvel's Iron Fist, and Masters of Sex. On film, he appeared opposite America Ferrera in X/Y. With Wesley Taylor, he co-created, wrote, directed, and starred in the web series Indoor Boys. To date, it has been nominated for eighteen Indie Series Awards and won six, including Best Web Series – Comedy, Best Writing – Comedy, and Best Lead Actor – Comedy for Wyse. In theater, he performed in various regional productions before making his Broadway debut in Lysistrata Jones, which ran at the Walter Kerr Theatre from 2011 to 2012. Also on Broadway, he played schoolboy Georg Zirschnitz in the Deaf West Theatre's production of Spring Awakening, and in 2018, he joined the musical Waitress, as Ogie. Off-Broadway, he has been seen in Lysistrata Jones, Triassic Parq, Bare, and Ride the Cyclone. In 2013–2014, he toured with the national company of Wicked, playing the role of Boq. And in 2015, he appeared opposite Evan Rachel Wood and Rumer Willis in For the Record: Dear John Hughes in Los Angeles. He also co-produced the Broadway transfer of Heidi Schreck's play What the Constitution Means to Me, which opened at the Helen Hayes Theater on March 31, 2019. The Come Up is a podcast that holds space for honest conversations about the reality of being a growing artist in the entertainment industry today. As some of you know, my husband and I are huge fans of ballroom dancing, so it’s only natural that we’re huge fans of Dancing with the Stars’ Val Chmerkovskiy. After spending time with him earlier this year in Guatemala with Pencils of Promise, I just knew I needed to have him on the show to share more about his story and why making an impact is so important. Born in Ukraine, at age 8, he and his family immigrated to Brooklyn, NY. As you can imagine it was a challenging transition but his parents inspired him to meet challenges by never backing away from theirs. To help occupy him and his brother’s time, they were enrolled in both violin and later on ballroom dancing. This soon became a passion for the whole family. In addition to Val and his brother Maks’ successful dance careers, they have since opened 14 other dance studios. I cannot wait for you to hear Val’s inspiring story. Not only is he so passionate about his own life and what he does, he also hopes to inspire others to do the same. Tune in to hear how’s he connecting with others to do just that and how he’s making an impact in the world today. -- Question Highlights: What did your life look like growing up and where did your passion for what you do now come from? What is most exciting in your life right now? Was not giving up or quitting a mindset that you were taught growing up? What do you think it takes to be a good leader/mentor? What have you learned from being on your 50-city tour? Do you still get nervous before you perform? In This Episode We Talk about: Why Val is so inspired by his parents How Val and his brother got into dance (and violin) Val’s (and his parents’) entrepreneurial spirit Why it’s essential to have pride without the ego Why mentorship is important to Val Forming connections and making an impact with others Val’s 50-city tour Why Val loves seeing others who are passionate about what they do And much more… Quotes How can I possibly dwell in my own success without having the energy of wanting to pass it forward and reciprocate?” “A blessing isn’t realized until it’s passed forward.” “I feel most fulfilled when I have a purpose.” “Trust your track record.” “Be nervous because you care, but don’t sell yourself short.” -- Valentin “Val” Chmerkovskiy was born in Odessa, Ukraine to an engineer mother and marine merchant father. At 8 years old, Val’s family immigrated to Brooklyn, NY as refugees seeking asylum from the corrupt ex-communist nation. It was in a small Eastern European community in South Brooklyn where Val first picked up ballroom dancing as an after school activity that his parents hoped would keep him out of trouble. Soon after, Val found another passion in playing the violin, further easing the nerves of his parents as the arts kept their curious son off the South Brooklyn streets. Although he resisted the temptation of Hollywood for a few years, in 2011 Val eventually joined his brother Maks as a member of the cast of professional dancers on Dancing with the Stars for its 13th installment. The 14-time US National Champion and two-time World Dance Champion quickly rose to stardom, becoming a fan-favorite for his impeccable performances and unique demeanor. Val won his first Dancing with the Stars Mirrorball Trophy with partner Rumer Willis during the ten-year anniversary season of the show. He later took home his second title in 2016 while partnered with Olympic Gold Medalist Laurie Hernandez. Most recently, Val was partnered with Paralympic swimmer Victoria Arlen, making it all the way to the semi-finals for which he choreographed a dance that brought a wheelchair into the world famous DWTS Ballroom for the first time. Val is the first and only American to ever win the IDSF Junior and Youth World Championship, along with the prestigious British “Blackpool” Open, the German Open and the Asian Championships in Shenzhen, China. After overseeing the biggest youth ballroom dance program in the US, the Rising Stars Dance Academy, Val co-founded Dance With Me, one of the nation’s leading social dance studios, where he also lends his expertise as Art Director. Longing to continue his work with kids, Val implemented the Dance With Me Juniors program with the mission of keeping kids active, healthy, and creative. Val supports numerous educational organizations and children’s charities, including the Children’s Hospital of LA and Pencils of Promise, for which he helped build two schools in Ghana using the funds he raised for the organization. He also spent the last two years mentoring kids at the KIPP Scholar Academy in South Los Angeles and brought his most improved mentees along to live tapings of Dancing with the Stars to inspire them to continue working hard. As a classically trained violinist, Val has performed at Carnegie Hall and at Lincoln Center as a concertmaster for the ISO Youth Orchestra. He is fluent in English and Russian. Val recently finished writing his first memoir titled “I’ll Never Change my Name,” set to be released in March 2018. Luke Frazier, a rapidly rising star in the Pops world, has proven himself as both an innately musical conductor and a sensitive pianist. His commitment to re-envisioning pops programming has quickly established him as a dynamic force across the music community. Frazier has demonstrated his versatility and range by conducting in venues both grand and intimate, from Lincoln Center to Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center to the Rainbow Room. Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Marvin Hamlisch put it best, calling Frazier “so talented, and sensitive to every nuance.” As a testament to his mission to re-imagine pops programming, Frazier founded the American Pops Orchestra in 2015, presenting all original programming. This professional orchestra boasts outstanding musicians from New York and Washington DC, featuring leading Broadway singers, dancers, and celebrity performers. In only three seasons The American Pops Orchestra has already garnered rave reviews, including the following from The New York Times, “As much as any individual singer, what warmed the evening was the sumptuous lilt of The American Pops Orchestra, conducted by Luke Frazier.” His commitment to the American Songbook is also evident through his involvement on the Board of the Great American Songbook Foundation. In demand as a clinician, adjudicator, and speaker, Luke recently addressed the National Symphony Orchestra's “Summer Music Institute” students. He appeared as the Keynote Speaker for the National Society of Arts and Letters (NSAL) Award for Excellence in the Arts at the Kennedy Center and also addressed VSA Arts, an international organization for artists with disabilities. Mr. Frazier serves as the Artist in Residence with the DC Youth Orchestra and most recently presented a series concerts celebrating Ella Fitzgerald's birth. It's hard to predict what someone will recognize Rumer Willis for exactly: as the winner of last season's Dancing With the Stars, or her starring role in Chicago on Broadway; for acting on the CW reboot of Beverly Hills 90210, or her current performances in L.A.'s The Unauthorized Musical Parody of The Devil Wears Prada. (Or, yes, as the oft-photographed daughter of her fairly well-known parents, Bruce Willis and Demi Moore.) See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Rumer Willis did her first number on "Dancing With The Stars" in front of her expressionless father, Bruce Willis. And she rocked it. Her partner Val Chmerkovskiy has been brutal on the girl--but it's paying off. Val and Rumer talk practice, trash-talk and who should win the mirror ball this year.

I talk with Julia Verdin, the multi-hyphenate writer and director of the new film MAYA.When you think of a social impact film, you may think school project.
