In this very special edition of "Next on the Tee," I'm joined by broadcasting legend Tim Brando. Tim Brando has practically done it all in the world of broadcasting. He started out calling high school football games alongside his father, Hub, in Shreveport, Louisiana. His entertainment career began at the tender age of 5 on his father's local variety show. As his career grew, he became the Assistant Sports Director at WAFB-TV in Baton Rouge and called men's and women's basketball for LSU. In 1984, he joined ESPN, hosting SportsCenter and their College Football Half-Time Show. By 1996, he was with CBS Sports, calling basketball games and hosting College Football Today. He also contributed to their digital media team, broadcasting The Masters. Fox Sports came calling in 2014, and he's been with them ever since. Tim is also an avid golfer and a member of Southern Trace Country Club in Shreveport. In our conversation, Tim walks us through his Hall of Fame career, touching on his partnership with Pittsburgh's own Beano Cook and the Pirates' pillbox hat given to him by Phil Garner. He's an amazing man who has done so much to enhance the sports we watch, thanks to his style and knowledge of a variety of sports. You can follow him on social media @timbrando.

San Diego Broadcast Legend Chris Cantore and Sushi Icon Tyler Mars Launch Omakase-and-Vinyl Pop-Up

Sometimes, it's the most fun to chop it up with friends. And when your friends include legendary sushi chefs and top DJs, all the better. This week we brought to Happy Half Hour Chris Cantore, a former voice across San Diego's radio airwaves, and his long-time buddy, North County sushi chef Tyler Mars. Troy goes way back with the duo, having been both a music and food journalist during his career. The pair just launched Needlefish, an omakase and record-spinning pop-up that they plan to take around San Diego, and hope to one day make a brick-and-mortar location. In fact, they held their first event for SDM staff just a few weeks ago to rave reviews. The idea is simple: fresh fish and good tunes, vinyl-only. Cantore says he likes to bring back the classics, like 90's hip-hop, punk, and stoner rock like Queens of the Stone Age. Tyler pairs that with his own sliced fish creations, served on warm vinegared rice and usually in combination with other condiments and ingredients you haven't experienced eating sushi before (think thin-sliced prime rib eye and chimichurri, for a non-fish example). Though Needlefish is new, the duo's idea is not. They both wanted to open up a spot together 25 years ago. But they were scared, and life happened. So did kids, and marriages, and careers, and the transitions of said careers, and Mars' eventual cancer diagnosis. The latter came in 2021 but Mars is now in remission. “It's really because of what happened to Tyler that we finally had the courage to pull the trigger on this,” Cantore says. “We realized that life is short, and you don't know how much time you have left. You have to do what you love to do, and this is what we love to do.” Stay tuned to our pages to find out more about where these guys will be popping up and when. Follow them on @needlefishco on Instagram for the latest updates. We also chat other food news around town including our Best Restaurants issue! Mission Hills' jewel Wolf in the Woods took home the top prize of Best Restaurant, while North County brunch temple Atelier Manna won Best New Restaurant. Check out all the other critics' and readers' picks here. Basic Pizza is also closing its doors, which opened in 2006, when Petco Park was just two years old. It's moving to the other side of the park, though, so fret not (and, also, it's the same owner as all the URBN restaurants with similar menus). And, finally, beloved LA Japanese chain Katsuya is coming to UTC with Katsuya Ko, which offers more of an izakaya-style menu geared towards younger consumers.

Andrew Schofield is a designer, entrepreneur and Founder and Creative Director of Flyypod®. This follows a career as a fashion designer and creative director for some of Australia's leading brands including SABA -among the most fashion forward brands of its day. Armed with a passion to fuse a luxury sensibility with ethical credentials, and in the process creating a product offering that was both compelling and intrinsically appealing, his journey was to find the right medium to express this through and take it to market, sourcing highly specialized and refined pieces from artisans in the most unusual corners of the world while blending this with high end fashion and objet d'art. An ethical luxury concept was born unlike any other for its time. Twenty-six years later HUSK has solidified its position as one of Australia's most iconic  and luxury fashion retail brands. Continuing on from this very successful venture he went on to open an equally captivating retail experience called “egg”. This was a lifestyle store with a holistic approach to the world of nesting and the giving of life itself. With a florist and a day spa, this concept was also one of a kind. In 2005 he joined the Voyager group and spent ten years traveling, creating and designing new brands and developing relationships with a host of retail giants and manufacturers alike. This led to being appointed men's design director for both Trent Nathan and Wayne Cooper. Sourcing styles and inspiration from around the globe and dealing at a nuts & bolts level with department store teams taught Andrew the craft of wholesale selling and product development at a commercial level. With over 30 years of experience in the fashion industry, Andrew's knowledge of garment design is unsurpassed.  He has an acute understanding of construction and manufacturing. After a lifetime spent travelling the globe in search of savoir-faire, influence and innovation, Flyypod®, was born. Combining the worlds of fashion and industrial design, he's created a sophisticated collection offering consumers a more stylish way to travel without sacrificing the planet. On this episode Andrew shares his one way ticket to travel the world in the early 1990s. He also takes us into the world of Flyypod® which creates innovative, sustainable and highly-designed travel products that are carefully crafted from recycled materials using ethical manufacturing processes. One product in the line is the world's first sustainably designed sleeping bag for air travel that offers hygienic warmth in transit, and fits over any airplane seat. So if you have a kind of existential crisis, Vrindavan can give you the clarity of who you are and what you're meant to do and be”. Tamar Haspel writes the James Beard Award-winning Washington Post column Unearthed, which covers the intersection of food and science: How what we eat affects us and our planet. She's also written for Discover, Vox, Slate, Fortune, Eater, and Edible Cape Cod. Together with journalist Mike Grunwald, Tamar co-hosts the Climavores podcast, which takes a good, hard, entertaining look at food's impact on climate and environment. When she's tired of the heavy lifting of journalism, she gets dirty. She and her husband, Kevin Flaherty, grow their own tomatoes, catch their own fish, hunt their own venison, and raise their own chickens. If she tells you a wild mushroom is OK to eat, you can believe her. And her book, TO BOLDLY GROW, will convince you to try it. On this episode, Tamar shares her one way ticket, with her husband Kevin, to Cape Cod, to eat “first hand food” -- where every day they eat one food they grew, hunted or fished. This entire journey is captured in her phenomenally written book, TO BOLDLY GROW, which we discuss. During the conversation, Tamar also shares the joy and satisfaction for continuously being on the steep part of the learning curve, why human nutrition is incredibly difficult to study, that there's no taste difference between fresh eggs and store bought eggs, why gardening is even more local than politics, the best way to forage for food in a city, and more. A Distinguished Scholar in North American History at McGill University currently living in Jerusalem, Gil Troy is an award-winning American presidential historian and a leading Zionist activist. In the Foreword to Troy's book, The Zionist Ideas: Visions for the Jewish Homeland – Then, Now, Tomorrow, Natan Sharansky writes:  “This magnificent work is the perfect follow-up to Arthur Hertzberg's classic The Zionist Idea. Combining, like Hertzberg, a scholar's eye and an activist's ear, Gil Troy demonstrates that we now live in a world of Zionist Ideas, with many different ways to help Israel flourish as a democratic Jewish state.” Troy's latest book which he penned with Sharansky, is Never Alone: Prison, Politics, and My People. Recently designated an Algemeiner J-100, one of the top 100 people “positively influencing Jewish life,” Troy wrote The Age of Clinton: America in the 1990s, and ten other books on the American presidency. One leading historian called Age of Clinton “the best book on the man and his times.” Troy edited and updated another classic, the multi-volume History of American Presidential Campaigns, originally edited by Arthur M. Schlesinger, Jr. and Fred Israel. He is now writing new essays on the 2012 and 2016 elections. Troy's book Moynihan's Moment: America's Fight against Zionism as Racism, describes the fall of the UN, the rise of Reagan and the spread of Anti-Zionism.  Jewish Ideas Daily designated it one of 2012's “best books.” He appeared as a featured commentator on CNN's popular multipart documentaries, The Eighties, The Nineties, and The 2000s. He has been interviewed on most major North American TV and Radio networks. Troy has published essays in the American, Canadian, and Israeli media, including writing essays for the New York Times' “Campaign Stops” in 2012 and 2016. He wrote a weekly column for the Daily Beast, “Secret Lives,” putting current events in historical perspective, and writes a weekly column for the Jerusalem Post. On this episode, Troy shares his one way ticket to a “Free Marketplace of Ideas”. In the course of our sweeping conversation, he shares the importance of listening generously vs. listening censoriously, how racialism is spreading in America today where people are defined by the color of their skin and not the content of their character, and how the word “Zionism” has sadly become hijacked. Plus, Troy points to what every successful President should possess, why there were actually six George W. Bush presidencies, and the “secret sauce” of Bill Clinton. He studied International Studies and Politics at the University of Oklahoma, and was a member of the Army National Guard from 2011-2013. He is currently pursuing a Masters in National Security Studies from the American Military University. On June 4, 2000, Salih fled to the United States with his family where they became political refugees. He grew up in Oklahoma and despite being so young he began to spread awareness about East Turkistan and the situation there. He moved to Washington, DC in the summer of 2017 and founded the East Turkistan National Awakening Movement (ETNAM). Under his leadership, the East Turkistan National Awakening Movement sparked a national awakening across the East Turkistani diaspora and re-ignited the flame of independence. He spearheaded the call for restoring East Turkistan's independence along with calling for the passage of a Uyghur / East Turkistan Policy Act. He reframed the East Turkistan issue as being an issue of territory and independence and not simply human rights and democracy. He joined the East Turkistan Government-in-Exile at the Special Parliamentary Session in Washington, DC in April 20, 2019 and was subsequently appointed as the Ambassador to the United States & Assistant to the Prime Minister. Since becoming a member of the East Turkistan Government-in-Exile, Salih Hudayar has continued advocating for democracy, political independence, and unity among his people. He has also been active in promoting non-violent resistance to Chinese occupation among the Uyghur and East Turkistani diaspora. His vision is for an independent East Turkistan that is democratic, pluralistic, and peaceful. He envisions that East Turkistan will one day be a shining example of democracy and human rights in not only Central Asia, but also the entire world. Salih is fluent in Uyghur, Turkish, and English. He is married and currently resides with his wife and two children in Northern Virginia. He also serves as the Joseph P. and Rose F. Kennedy Professor of Neurology at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Tanzi received his B.S. (microbiology) and B.A. (history) at the University of Rochester in 1980 and his Ph.D. (neurobiology) at Harvard Medical School in 1990. Dr. Tanzi was a key member of the teams that discovered the first Alzheimer's disease (AD) gene, the amyloid precursor protein (APP) gene, and the two other early-onset familial AD genes, presenilin 1 and presenilin 2. As leader of the Cure Alzheimer's Fund Alzheimer's Genome Project, Dr. Tanzi identified several other AD genes, including CD33, the first AD gene shown to regulate neuroinflammation in AD. He also discovered the Wilson's disease gene and several other neurological disease genes. Dr. Tanzi's team was the first to use human stem cells to create three-dimensional mini human brain organoids of AD, dubbed “Alzheimer's-in-a-Dish”. This model was the first to recapitulate all three key AD pathological hallmarks. He and his team have successfully used these organoids to screen for approved drugs and natural products that can stop AD brain pathology. Dr. Tanzi has developed several novel therapies for AD including gamma secretase modulators targeting amyloid pathology (Phase 1 planned 2021) and AMX0035, which was already successful in a clinical trial of ALS and now under priority review for approval at the FDA. Dr. Tanzi also discovered that beta-amyloid plays a functional role in the brain as an anti-microbial peptide, supporting a potential role for infection in the etiology of AD. Dr. Tanzi serves as Chair of the Cure Alzheimer's Fund Research Leadership Group and on numerous scientific advisory and editorial boards. He has published over 600 research papers and is one of the top 50 most cited neuroscientists in the world. He has received the highest awards in his field, including the Metropolitan Life Foundation Award, Potamkin Prize, Ronald Reagan Award, Oneness in Humanity Award, Silver Innovator Award, the Smithsonian American Ingenuity Award, the Brain Research Foundation Award, and the Kary Mullis Award for Medical Research. He has also been named to TIME magazine's list of TIME100 Most Influential People in the World.
