In a special episode themed around Chinese New Year, we explore how Adelaide embraces cultural connections through three distinct lenses. The centerpiece is our conversation with Carolyn Lam, whose journey from Hong Kong to Adelaide has helped weave classical music into our city’s cultural fabric through Amicus Strings’ 100+ annual performances. The celebration begins with 23rd Street Distillery’s extraordinary Year of the Snake Whisky, one of only 3,600 bottles produced, showcasing Kangaroo Island barley aged in 15-year-old Galway Pipe casks. The resulting spirit proves as transformative as the year it honours. Our musical pilgrimage breaks new ground as we debut vinyl playback in the studio with Jayne-Anne Power’s “What’s Your Rush” from The Analogue Sessions, bringing soul-drenched wisdom to match the Year of the Snake’s themes of transformation and growth. After the genre-diversity, sound pioneering, and commercial success, of his 1970s collaborations, Tony Visconti entered a drastically different music decade in the 1980s. The influence of punk is being felt, even in Tony's chart-dominating mainstream, and the sounds become harsher, noisier and, somehow, poppier. In this episode we talk Adam Ant, The Boomtown Rats, Elaine Paige and more. Yeah, it's a strange one.

00h 00’00” Presentación 00h 01’46” Cabecera 00h 02’22” UN RETAZO DE AZUL – Title song – Katie Campbell 00h 07’17” CABOBLANCO – Heaven knows – Carol Goldsmith 00h 10’44” COMA – Sunday’s moon – Katie Campbell 00h 13’20” DR KILDARE – Three stars will shine tonight – Fletcher Sheridan 00h 16’17” RAMBO – Peace in our life – Frank Stallone 00h 19’28” ACORRALADO – It’s a long road – Dan Hill 00h 22’40” FLINT, AGENTE SECRETO – Your zowie face 00h 24’48” LEGEND – Princess Lily – Katie Campbell 00h 30’50” PAPILLON – Free as the wind – Engelbert Humperdinck 00h 33’56” PLAYERS – Meant to be – Katie Campbell 00h 37’26” POLTERGEIST – Carol Anne’s theme 00h 40’30” PURA ENERGÍA – No one like you – Sarah Brightman 00h 45’10” QB VII - A Kaddish for the six million 00h 47’44” SEBASTIAN – Comes the night – Jimmy A. In April of 2012, the very first revival of Evita came to Broadway, having done the same in London six years earlier. And in both productions, the title role featured a relatively unknown actress to Western audiences: Elena Roger. She followed a select few chosen to take on one of the most difficult female roles in musical theater. First, there was Julie Covington, then Elaine Paige, Patti LuPone, and Madonna. Among this group of women, Madonna was the only one to have already been a celebrity when she took on the role. As for the other ladies, it was Evita that introduced them to the world and turned them into stars. Such is the power of this musical, with book and lyrics by Tim Rice and the iconic score by Andrew Lloyd Webber. Whether it's the 2006 West End revival or its subsequent transfer to Broadway in 2012, neither version even lasted a year, a far cry from their respective original productions. So how did this revival differ from those previous productions? And why couldn't it recapture the fame and longevity of the original? In this episode, we'll explore the history of this high-flying adored musical and the factors that led to its Broadway revival. We'll also highlight some challenges this production faced and the impact Evita continues to have on audiences today. Rerun. At a cost of £2m, Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical ‘Cats' premiered at the New London Theatre on 11th May, 1981 – and the world had never seen anything like it. With a cast including Brian Blessed and Elaine Paige, the original production was innovative, sexy, creepy, bizarre – and an enormous gamble for the impresarios who backed it. In this episode, Olly, Rebecca and Arion look back at the original reviews for the show, consider whether John Napier's award-winning costume design was actually incredibly lazy, and reveal how the show's signature song, ‘Memory', nearly didn't happen at all… Further reading: • Elaine Paige performs ‘Memory' in the original production: • Sue MacGregor interviews the cast and crew for Radio 4's ‘The Reunion': https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m0008jyn • ‘Cats' – a timeline from London's Evening Standard: https://www.standard.co.uk/culture/theatre/cats-musical-history-a4439316.html ‘Why am I hearing a rerun?' This petite pocket rocket is a force of nature… she has wowed audiences through the decades starring in everything from Cats to Sunset Boulevard to Evita to Piaff and so much more… she has performed around the world from The Great Wall of China to The White House… Amongst other things we talk about the importance of getting dressed for her auditions, how the process of applying her makeup herself helped her transform into her character for her performance, and her all-important “Act 3” look …all interspersed with her infectious, inimitable laugh and self-deprecating humour. Jetzt wurde Whitney Houstons Leben im Biopic "I Wanna Dance With Somebody" sogar verfilmt. I Wanna Dance With Somebody". __________ Über diese Songs vom Album “Whitney” wird im Podcast gesprochen: 07:43 Mins – “I Wanna Dance With Somebody” 18:15 Mins – “Love Will Safe The Day” 24:36 Mins – “Didn't We Almost Have It All” 35:53 Mins – “For The Love of You” 38:41 Mins – “I Know Him So Well” __________ Über diese Songs wird außerdem im Podcast gesprochen 37:40 Mins – “For The Love of You” von The Isley Brothers 38:41 Mins – “I Know Him So Well” von Elaine Paige und Barbara Dickson __________ Shownotes: Die Whitney Houston Dokumentation “The True Story Of Whitney Houston”: https://www.zdf.de/dokumentation/zdfinfo-doku/the-true-story--of-whitney-houston-100.html Albumreview auf Allmusic.com: https://www.allmusic.com/album/mw0000190356 Trailer zum Biopic über Whitney Houston “I Wanna Dance With Somebody”: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9tfemzaMkoU Offizielle Website von Whitney Houston: https://www.whitneyhouston.com/de/ Erinnerungen an Whitney Houston im Rolling Stone: https://www.rollingstone.de/whitney-houston-ist-zwar-verstummt-aber-sie-bleibt-unvergessen-2341533/ __________ Ihr wollt mehr Podcasts wie diesen? Greg and Bella welcome back Drama teacher Mr Yale with a lesson about the year 1968. '68 might seem to fall through the history books - dwarfed by other more dramatic years - but Mr Yale is here to make a case for it being a turning point year. Vietnam and the Space Race were in the news; Oliver! was on the cinema screens; and the Theatres Act 1968 lead to this year being known as the "Year Zero for British Theatre" with the first performance of Hair the Musical taking the West End by storm (starring none other than Elaine Paige!). Mr Yale will use these real events as a springboard to take Greg and Bella through some classic drama practicals - from who can best embody the voice of a significant object from '68 - to is Bella brave enough to let Greg catch her when she falls? Bad students of all ages are welcome. Expect brilliant teachers, captivating subjects but absolutely no homework. Get in touch - email us at teachme@bbc.co.uk

In this episode, member of the original Broadway cast, Stephen Hanan, analyzes the marketing genius of Sir Cameron Macintosh, the artistic originality of Trevor Nunn, and the indelible literary capability of T.S. Eliot which led to the lasting success of Cats. A breakdown of branding and merchandising efforts highlights the ways Cats created a market for the international mega-musical. Hanan details the rigors of the unconventional process the actors and designers engaged in as the musical transferred from London's West End to Broadway, including his collaboration with Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber. For creating Asparagus/Growltiger in CATS he was a Tony Award nominee, and his account of rehearsing that original production was published as A CAT'S DIARY. 00h 00'00" Inicio 00h 01'06" Cabecera 00h 01'44" ANDREW LLOYD WEBBER 00h 03'58" Close every door - Philip Schoffield 00h 06'56" Any dream will do - Jason Donovan 00h 10'43" Heaven on their minds - Josh Young 00h 14'23" I don't know how to love him - Yvonne Elliman & Ian Gillan 00h 18'30" Gethsemane - Ian Gillan 00h 24'02" Oh what a circus - David Essex 00h 27'47" Another suitcase in another hall - Barbara Dickson 00h 30'45" Don't cry for me, Argentina - Elaine Paige 00h 36'32" BLONDEL y CHESS 00h 37'05" The least of my troubles - Paul Nicholas 00h 40'59" Running back for more - Elaine Paige 00h 44'06" One night in Bangkok - Murray Head 00h 49'02· I know him so well - Elaine Paige & Barbara Dickson 00h 53'12" Someone else's story - Elaine Paige 00h 56'53" CRICKET y HEATHCLIFF 00h 58'19" The summer game - The London Quartet 01h 01'47" A misunderstood man - Cliff Richard 01h 06'16" Had to be - Cliff Richard & Olivia Newton John 01h 10'23" Be with me always - Cliff Richard & Olivia Newton John 01h 15'25" THE LION KING y KING DAVID 01h 16'52" Circle of life - Carmen Twilie 01h 20'47" Hakuna Matata - Nathan Lane y Ernie Sabella 01h 24'49" Can you feel the love tonight - Elton John 01h 28'45" Sheer perfection - Marcus Lovett & Judy Khun 01h 33'03" Saul has stain his thousands - Stephen Bogardus & Chorus 01h 36'41" This new Jerusalem - Marcus Lovett & Anbthony Galde 01h 40'54" MÁS ELTON JOHN 01h 41'37" Every story is a love story - Sherie Rene Scott 01h 44'57" Fortune favors the brave - Adam Pascal & Cast 01h 47'10" Elaborate lives - Adam Pascal & Heather Headley 01h 51'29" Written in the stars - Adam Pascal & Heather Headley 01h 55'37" The panic in me - Elton John 02h 01'02" It's thought to be a God - Elton John & Randy Newman 02h 04'44" My heart dances - Elton John 02h 09'29" PRINCIPIO Y FINAL 02h 10'36" A man on his own - Adam Brazier 02h 14'50" Going, going, gone - Tim Rice 02h 19'15" G Company Blues - Ensemble 02h 22'39" Fight the fight - Robert Londsdale & Ensemble 02h 25'08" More than America - Darius Campbell & Rebecca Thornhill

If anyone's seen it all in theatre it's Nick Allott, who spent 40 years with Cameron Mackintosh, running it for 20. This week we chat to Nick about theatre's glory days, from Cats and Phantom to Les Misérables and Hamilton. But he also sheds sobering light on how devastating the pandemic has been for the industry as theatres went dark for the longest time in their histories. As the sector slowly starts to recover, Nick looks to the future while regaling us with a host of hilarious, entertaining anecdotes ranging from Princess Diana doing the splits in his office to Andrew Lloyd Webber drenching Barbra Streisand's canapés in champagne. He also offers us a backstage pass to the real stories behind the headlines – why did Elaine Paige take over from Judi Dench in Cats? Why was Martin McCutcheon so panned in My Fair Lady? Why did losing out to Jodie Prenger in the 2008 BBC Series I'd do Anything ultimately catapult Jessie Buckley to stardom? What's Hugh Jackman really like? How did Nick end up with a gun in his fridge? Listen in to hear what it's really like to live your life behind the scenes of London's leading West End theatres. Produced by Audio Coast
We join Elaine Paige, award winning actress, singer, producer and radio presenter, as she plants trees at London's Hainault Forest. She gives us insight into her years on stage, from the origins of her love of music to her rise to stardom in Evita in 1978, a role that changed her life forever. We also talk about why nature is important to her and her future plans, including a return to singing and planting more trees! Don't forget to rate us and subscribe! 00h o5'58" Come back Richard, your country needs you - Tim Rice 00h 08'54" Down thru summer - Ross Hannaman 00h 11'46" Goodbye Seattle - Paul Raven 00h 14'40" I’ll give all my love to Southend - Ross Hannaman 00h 16'36" Try it and see - Rita Pavone 00h 19'27" COMPONIENDO PARA CANTANTES DETERMINADOS 00h 20'05" A winter’s tale - David Essex 00h 24'13" Disillusion me - Gary Bond 00h 27'30" Magdalena - Tony Christie 00h 30'53" What a line to go out on - Yvonne Elliman 00h 34'21" Dance the dance - Connie Fisher 00h 38'24" It's easy for you - Elvis Presley 00h 41'48" ESCRIBIENDO PARA ELAINE PAIGE 00h 42'14" Falling down to Earth (Mike Batt) 00h 46'17" The last one to leave (Florrie Palmer) 00h 48'58" Hot as sun (Paul McCartney) 00h 52'10" The second time (Francis Lai) 00h 56'12" Missing (Vangelis) 00h 59'54" All things considered" (Vangelis) 01h 03'32" CANCIONES PARA EL CINE 01h 04'16" All time high (Octopussy) - Rita Coolidge 01h 07'10" A Christmas dream (Odessa) - Maynard Williams 01h 10'01" Finally (Gumshoe) - Pamela Paterson 01h 13'49" ELTON JOHN, FREDDIE MERCURY Y RICK WAKEMAN 01h 14'25" The falling priest - Freddie Mercury & Monserrat Caballé 01h 20'07" The Golden boy - Freddie Mercury & Monserrat Caballé 01h 26'06" Legal boys - Elton John 01h 29'10" Julia - Chaka Khan 01h 33'45" STARMANIA (TYCOON) 01h 34'12" Only the very best - Peter Kingsbery 01h 37'43" Ziggy - Celine Dion 01h 40'38" ALAN MENKEN Y DISNEY 01h 42'24" A whole new world - Brad Kane & Lea Salonga 01h 45'01" One jump ahead - Brad Kane 01h 47'21" Home - Susan Egan 01h 51'05" No matter what - Tom Bosley & Susan Egan 01h 54'08" If I can’t love her - Terrence Mann 01h 58'07" A change in me - Susan Egan 02h 01'51" How does a moment last forever - Celine Dion 02h 05'22" Evermore - Josh Groban 02h 08'27" WIZARD FROM OZ 02h 09'27" Already home - Danielle Hope 02h 12'44" Nobody understand me - Danielle Hope & Cast 02h 16'27" Red shoes blues - Hannah Waddingham 02h 18'35" Wonders of the world - Michael Crawford
Nicky began his musical journey in Dumfries in Scotland, staying late after school singing Elaine Paige at pitch and tinkling on the piano until the cleaners threw him out. With ideas of becoming the Michael Ball of Dumfries, a singing teacher recognised his talent and pointed him towards Guildhall in London, so he jumped on the Megabus and auditioned at the tender age of sixteen. A self-confessed ‘rough diamond' when he first arrived, Nicky began his training at Guildhall, and soon won a record deal with Decca Records, and found himself marketed as ‘The Scottish Tenor', touring the country with Katherine Jenkins, singing with Shirley Bassey and chatting on TV with Lorraine Kelly among other extraordinary and surreal experiences. However, he recognised that it wasn't quite the path he wanted for himself, and he returned to his training, going on to the National Opera Studio and to become an inaugural Harwood Young Artist at English National Opera. Nicky is now at the heart and soul of the international opera scene, singing all over the world on the most prestigious stages, even right now he is simultaneously working at the Royal Opera House & English National Opera in London. Alongside his thriving international career, he's also an ambassador for Help Musicians UK, who helped support him on his operatic journey when he didn't have a bean. Find out more about Nicky on his website here and through his agent here Find out about Help Musicians UK here

Barbara Dickson OBE is a singer, songwriter and actress. She is a multi-million selling recording artist with an equally impressive Olivier Award winning acting career, seventeen Platinum & Gold albums and remains Scotland's biggest selling female singer of all time. Famous for her roles in Blood Brothers and Band of Gold, she is also best known for her 1985 single, 'I know him so well' recorded with Elaine Paige. Barbara has three grown up sons and lives in Edinburgh with her husband. In this episode Barbara reflects on an early Sliding Doors decision to leave her job for a music gig - and how if she hadn't, would most definitely not be where she is today! We chat about her cautious nature and how taking chances in acting opened up the doors to her pop career. Barbara has always stayed true to herself throughout her career and has had some truly great 'what if' moments - including if she had not have taken her role in Blood Brothers, she would not have been married for 37 years! @slidingdoorspod Hosted by: @jenbecks28 Guest: @barbara_dickson_official

At a cost of £2m, Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical ‘Cats' premiered at the New London Theatre on 11th May, 1981 - and the world had never seen anything like it. With a cast including Brian Blessed and Elaine Paige, the original production was innovative, sexy, creepy, bizarre - and an enormous gamble for the impresarios who backed it. In this episode, Olly, Rebecca and Arion look back at the original reviews for the show, consider whether John Napier's award-winning costume design was actually incredibly lazy, and reveal how the show's signature song, ‘Memory', nearly didn't happen at all...
