Samuel and Olivia Clemens and their children moved into the house they’d had built at Nook Farm in Hartford — the house that we now call the Mark Twain House — in 1874, 150 years ago this year. To celebrate that anniversary, this hour we present a new version of our 2015 interview with the late Hal Holbrook. Holbrook was probably best known for his one-man show, Mark Twain Tonight!, which he performed for 63 years — longer than Samuel Clemens used the Mark Twain moniker. Beyond Mark Twain Tonight!, you probably know Hal Holbrook as Deep Throat in All the President’s Men. He’s in a Dirty Harry movie. He’s in a Steven Spielberg movie. He’s in Wall Street and The Firm and John Carpenter’s The Fog. He appeared on Designing Women and The West Wing and The Sopranos and Sons of Anarchy and Grey’s Anatomy. Hal Holbrook won a Tony Award. He was nominated for 12 Emmys, and he won five. And he was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for Into the Wild. We talked to Holbrook on the evening of February 3, 2015. He was two weeks shy of his 90th birthday — which birthday he celebrated by performing Mark Twain Tonight! at The Bushnell in Hartford. Hal Holbrook died in 2021. He was 95. #333 In this episode, Guy interviewed John Thomas, a Silicon Valley tech professional turned co-author of a spiritual book, 'Channeled Messages of Hope.' They delved into the process of receiving spiritual messages from ascended masters through voice channeling facilitated by Carolyn and her friend Sam Larkin. The conversation covered the origin of the book, the role of ascended masters, and the environmental messages received. John shared personal insights into spiritual growth, life reviews, and the interconnectedness of all life on Earth. The discussion also touches on their upcoming projects and the unique experience of transcribing these soul interviews into an audiobook format. About John: I am Carolyn Thomas' husband. I graduated with a degree in chemical engineering and my background is classic corporate technology. I went down the typical Silicon Valley tech company path, but then soon diverted to marketing, sales, and business development. I've tried my hand at big companies, and I've been involved with startups. I've had some successes, some failures, and lots of interesting experiences. My involvement with the emerged when Carolyn was preparing for the Nikola Tesla interview. Without an engineering background, she was having difficulty formulating the more technical questions fitting for such a soul and asked for my help. I ended up leading the interview with Tesla, as well as the interviews with Albert Einstein and his first wife Mileva who reveals that she co-authored Einstein's paper on relatively along with four other papers filed in 1905. I also felt drawn to speak with Ronald Reagan and Samuel Clemens and would go on to participate in the remaining interviews with Carolyn. We felt that having the two of us interview a soul made for more interesting conversation as well as follow on questions. Early voting has already started in the 2024 presidential election and I just couldn't resist the suggestion by my guests to explore what Samuel Clemens alias Mark Twain, Hartford's greatest Gilded Age humorist, had to say about the United States presidents. Was Twain the John Stewart or John Oliver of his day? Known for his sharp wit and scathing satire, what presidents met with his approval? Corruption, national identity, the power of big business, and America's global role were just as contested then as they are now. His funny, insightful observations about the presidents of his day apply readily to the modern presidency. Guests on this episode are Twain experts Mallory Howard, Assistant Curator at The Mark Twain House & Museum and Dr. Jason Scappaticci, historian and Associate Dean of Student Affairs at Connecticut State Community College Capital in Hartford. Looking for a fun and informative event for your library, book club, or historical society? Most people know something about Mark Twain, the pen name of Samuel Clemens. After all, he wrote his most famous books while living in Hartford, Connecticut. His 25-room house on Farmington Avenue cost over $40,000 in 1874 dollars. Raised as a child in Missouri, he became world famous for his wit and humor both in print and on stage. But what if the man who served as Twain's butler for 17 years had a story that was just as powerful and gripping as Twain's? In today's episode we are going to meet that man, George Griffin. Twain scholar and collector Kevin MacDonnell's biographical sketch George Griffin: Meeting Mark Twain's Butler which provides the most comprehensive look into Griffin's life to date, and brings us face to face with the man who is said to have inspired Jim in Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. George Griffin came to wash the windows in Mark Twain's new house in 1874 and stayed for seventeen years, taking on the position of butler, the highest-ranking employee in the household. A photograph of Griffin was discovered recently. It is the only known picture of the man who was also a prominent leader in Hartford's Black community, serving as deacon of Hartford's Metropolitan African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church. The guests in this episode are Dr. Camesha Scruggs, professor of history at Central Connecticut State University and Twain scholar Kevin MacDonnell. Dr. Scruggs received her PhD in history from the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Her current manuscript project is a further examination of how interventions from social, civic, government, secondary and higher education institutions impact the occupation of domestic service during the New Deal Era. She may be contacted at cscruggs@ccsu.edu Kevin MacDonnell earned his MLS at the University of Texas and serves on the editorial board of the Mark Twain Journal. He has contributed articles to the Mark Twain Encyclopedia (1993), co-edited Mark Twain and Youth, and has reviewed over fifty books for the Mark Twain Forum. His collection of more than 11,000 Mark Twain items--first editions, letters, photographs, archives, manuscripts, and artifacts--is the largest in private hands and is frequently shared with other scholars and museums. He gives frequent lectures on Twain and may be reached at info@macdonnellrarebooks.com Copies of The Mark Twain Journal featuring Kevin MacDonnell's biographical sketch George Griffin: Meeting Mark Twain's Butler Face-to-Face may be purchased from the Mark Twain House Museum Store for $12.00. The link to the journal in the museum shop is here: https://marktwainhousestore.org/products/mark-twain-journal-volume-62-number-1 You can also take a special tour of the Twain House. The George Griffin Living History Tour invites visitors to step back in time to the year 1885. The premise of the tour is that the Clemens family are looking to hire a new cook, and Mr. Griffin has been tasked with conducting the first round of interviews—after all, as the head of the domestic staff, he knows exactly the kind of temperament and skills needed to keep the house running. He leads visitors through each restored room of the house, and gives them his own experience of not only the domestic labor done in that space, but also the emotional labor that he must navigate daily as a formerly enslaved black man working in the house of a wealthy white family. And who is “G. G., Chief of Ordnance?” Find out for yourself when you take a Living History tour with George Griffin. ------------------------------------------------------- Can you spare $10 a month to help support Grating the Nutmeg? Two names in a title month continues with Disney's Tom and Huck. Things I learned from this movie: Hard work is worse than death, Mark Twain, or should I say Samuel Clemens, was, himself, a Muff Potter, Injuns are bad, and brown-face is ok when you're hiding from native americans. This movie sucks Walt's ancient, shriveled, antisemitic balls. But the show is good. Just look at it.

"Deciduous Man..." Thanks, Shane Bullard for a little inspiration on this one. A few years ago, Shane was playing some good tunes here on social media...just strumming his 6-string and singing some great old country songs. I haven't heard much from him in a while. I sure hope he starts playing again. For now, he sits and thinks about the fight. The good fight. Emerging slowly from a darkness That got hold of him last night. Oh, whether you're a man of means or measure, Or just a wolf in black sheep's clothing. How pathetic to be stuck there In self-pity and self-loathing. And what we're falling for.But he rallies. Gazing out upon the Flag, he sings a line or two from Hag— "Today I started loving you again. And I'm right back where I've really always been…" His mind goes walking, across the Edmund Pettus bridge, Walking on the moon. Walking into death in Normandy that June. Through dust and fires, Across rivers running red with blood. Down deep, the music plays, Bad news on the doorstep, Bud. His faith returns against all reason. In spite of, in the face of, because of, and for the grace of, everything that's happened. Despite the wrecking force of greedAnd the weight of sorriness gone to seed,He still believes in goodness, though.Honor, strength, and courage—And other stuff, you know.In those who swim against the stream,Who refuse to think alike,Alice Paul and Lucy Burns waging hunger strikes. Woody Guthrie fighting fascists with two chords on his guitar.Samuel Clemens sitting, Cooly smoking a cigar While birthing Huckleberry Finn.Jefferson writes the Declaration while he plays the violin,John Coltrane and Einstein were probably there to hear it—Living out the mystery of the cosmos, The science and the Holy Spirit. And there's more.Let him tell you about Austin and the Bakersfield sound, And half a million on a farm, outside a little New York town, Giving peace a chance.Tell me, what's the matter with a bit of song and dance? In the mud, Dave.Jump in the mud.But then here comes the blues, trying to pull us underWith all the dark and somber news of pillaging and plunder.History talk— Of railroads and boomtownsAnd gold and silver riches foundFrom Comstock in NevadaAnd the Black Hills of Dakota—No more buffalo, James, no Lakota. And never mind the sixty bucks he paid to fill up on the way,He rails against the offshore rigsAnd spills in Prudhoe Bay.Now, we fight the Keystone lineAcross the Plains, today. The question comes, though not the first, Not about the vain attempts to curb our thirst, Just “Hey, what's the use of knowing all the worst?”“I don't know,” he just may say,And he probably doesn't know. He's not the lion anymore, But that won't stop the preaching, just listen to him roarWhen he speaks of schemes of thugs and parliaments of whores. He can't forget old Howard ZinnWho talked about the mortal sin,Of going along to get along, Giving up and giving in.The world has suffered most,Not from chasing Don Quixote's ghost, Not from deviance and defiance, But from unresisting, unthinking, obedience and compliance.Gazing out again upon the Flag, he hears those favorite lines from Hag,And he's right back where he's really always been…In spite of, in the face of,Because of, and for the grace ofEverything that's happened. Everything we've done.At the end of the day, he's headed home to his sweet dogs. The river on the left is calm and clear, there is no fog,He can see all the way across.Greeted at the kitchen door,By the Shepherd and the Labrador—Joyful and hungry. He feeds them well and then himself. And leaves the Irish on the shelf. He makes a cup of teaAnd sips it slow.Accompanied by birdsong, To Kristofferson's devil, singing low,A line from a song a brother taught him fifty years ago.“I don't believe that no one wants to know.”Gone, for now, is whatever got hold of him last night. His faith returns against all reason.A greater fool for any season.

For 35 years now, in over four thousand performances from Piper's Opera House in Virginia City to Leningrad University in Russia, McAvoy has been preeminent in preserving the wit & wisdom of The Wild Humorist of the Pacific Slope, Mark Twain. McAvoy is a winner of the Nevada Award for Excellence in School and Library Service. He plays the ghost of Samuel Clemens in the Biography Channel's episode of Mark Twain, and the Discovery Channel's Cronkite Award winning documentary, 'Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.' Says McAvoy, “It's like being a Monday through Friday preacher, whose sermon, though not reverently pious, is fervently American.”
Samuel and Olivia Clemens and their children moved into the house they'd had built at Nook Farm in Hartford — the house that we now call the Mark Twain House — in 1874, 150 years ago this year. Partly to celebrate that anniversary, we present this hour a new version of our 2015 interview with the late Hal Holbrook. Holbrook was probably best known for his one-man show, Mark Twain Tonight!, which he performed for 63 years — longer than Samuel Clemens used the Mark Twain moniker. Beyond Mark Twain Tonight!, you probably know Hal Holbrook as Deep Throat in All the President's Men. He's in a Dirty Harry movie. He's in a Steven Spielberg movie. He's in Wall Street and The Firm and John Carpenter's The Fog. He appeared on Designing Women and The West Wing and The Sopranos and Sons of Anarchy and Grey's Anatomy. He was 95. Welcome back, friends! We're neck-deep in the mysteries of structured water, and I gotta tell you, last time we just scratched the surface of this pond! Today, we're pullin' out the big guns – The Institute for Life Science's interactive playground, where water molecules do the jive and gel networks twist like cotton candy! (Sound of banjo twanging, then bubbles popping) Grandpa Bill: Remember that "Exclusion Zone Water Droplet" model? I fiddled with that thing for hours! You see these little blue spheres? Those are water molecules hummin' around, and when they bump into a friendly surface, bam! An exclusion zone pops up, like a miniature force field keepin' out the riffraff. It's mesmerizing, I tell you, like watchin' fireflies dance on a moonless night. (Sound of Grandpa Bill chuckling) Grandpa Bill: But it ain't just pretty lights, folks. The Institute for Life Science says these exclusion zones might be the key to unlockin' the secrets of life itself! They could be how nutrients zip around our cells, how our brains send messages, even how plants suck up water from the ground. And get this, they reckon this gel network business – where water molecules link up like kids holdin' hands – might be crucial for all sorts of things, from healin' wounds to purifyin' our precious H2O. (Sound of Grandpa Bill whistling in amazement) Grandpa Bill: Now, I know what you're thinkin': "Hold on, Grandpa Bill, ain't this all just fancy talk?" Well, that's why I say get yer hands dirty with The Institute for Life Science's resources! Play with that droplet model, read their research papers, watch those scientist interviews – see for yourself the evidence stackin' up. (Sound of Grandpa Bill clearing his throat and drawling) Grandpa Bill Welcomes Virtual Guest Samuel Clemens,AKA Mark Twain: I ain't sayin' I'm a prophet, but somethin's bubblin' beneath the surface here, somethin' that might change the way we see water forever. So, grab your curiosity buckets, folks, and let's plumb the depths of structured water together! #structuredwater, #IFLS, #ExclusionZoneWaterDroplet, #GelNetworks, #SciencePlayground, #GrandpaBillGetsHandsOn, #BeyondH2O, #WaterRevolution, #OpenYourMind,#TheBHSalesKennelKelpHolisticHealingHour,#structuredwater #IFLS #BeyondH2O #GrandpaBillGetsCurious #HolisticScience #WaterMysteries #FourthPhaseOfWater #OpenYourMind,#structuredwater, #marktwain, #HuckFinn, #MississippiMud, #MagneticMemoryMethod, #AnthonyMetivier, #GrandBillGetsLiterary, #HolisticScience, #TheBHSalesKennelKelpHolisticHealingHour, --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/bhsales/message

In the late 1850s, a young man named Samuel Clemens started out piloting steamboats on the Mississippi River. Within a few years, he embarked on a writing career, adopting the pen name that became famous: Mark Twain. Armed with a wry sense of humor and a natural flair for storytelling, Twain gained wide acclaim for his short stories, travel sketches, and novels. In 1885, he published The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, a story of two runaways on a quest for freedom. It would become one of the most celebrated, and controversial, books in American literature. But at the height of his popularity, his risky business ventures and his critiques of American policy abroad threatened to ruin his legacy. Did you ever think the universe was trying to tell you something? I just finished reading Anderson Cooper's book on the Vanderbilt family. In it, he describes family patriarch Commodore Vanderbilt's interest in Spiritualism and clairvoyance. Cooper writes “Evidence suggests that the Commodore had begun attending seances as early as 1864, but given the mainstreaming of Spiritualist practices in the 1860s and ‘70s, this was not as unusual as it may sound. The period immediately after the Civil War had seen a dramatic rise in the Spiritualism movement and other alternative modes of healing and perception, driven largely by the staggering loss of life experienced during the Civil War.” We explored heiress Theodate Pope Riddle's obsession with Spiritualism in Grating the Nutmeg episode #109 but what did Hartford's most famous resident of the Gilded Age, Mark Twain, think about it? And what about the ghosts seen in the Twain House? Whether you believe in the afterlife, don't believe in it at all, or just want to come to your own conclusions, this is an episode for you! Guests today are Mallory Howard, Assistant Curator at The Mark Twain House & Museum and Dr. Jason Scappaticci, historian and Associate Dean of Student Affairs at Connecticut State Community College Capital in Hartford. The old silver mining town of Virginia City, Nevada, is said to be amongst the most haunted locales in the country, but why? As part of Talking Strange's special Spooky Season coverage, Aaron Sagers teamed with the Reno-Tahoe Territory to explore the unexplained phenomena of VC. Recording this episode live from the allegedly haunted St. Mary's Art Center in Virginia City, Aaron speaks with Paula Burris of WIGS (Women Investigating Ghost Sightings) and the resident paranormal investigator at St. Mary's Art Center (a hospital that ran from 1873 until the 1940s, which now serves as a gallery, event space and artist retreat). ALSO joining Aaron is acclaimed author Janice Oberding, known for her expertise of hauntings in Reno, Tahoe, Carson City, and Virginia City. And Debbie Bender of Bats in the Belfry haunted walking tour. Together, they discuss the unique paranormal personality of Virginia City, the tales of hauntings at the Washoe Club, Silver Queen Hotel, Territorial Enterprise newspaper offices (where Samuel Clemens became Mark Twain) and St. Mary's Art Center's reputation of ghostly children, and shadow people said to roam the halls. They also touch on their upcoming event in Virginia City with Soul Circle Paranormal. _______________________________________________________________ Talking Strange Paranormal Podcast with Aaron Sagers is a weekly paranormal pop culture show featuring celebrity and author interviews, with a weekly "Small Talk" mini-sode with reader submitted letters and spooky tales. Let's pack it up and go strike it rich!'Roughing It' by Mark Twain is a collection of rambling anecdotes from his travels as a younger man. It details his travels to the Wild West during the California gold rush, working as a journalist in San Francisco and crossing the Pacific Ocean to reach the Kingdom of Hawaii. There are many funny stories within and is semi-autobiographical but with plenty of fictional inventions as well.I summarised the book as follows. "I'm a huge fan of Mark Twain in general and this book didn't let me down. It really has everything: entertaining, informational, a unique perspective, historical, funny, etc,. My favourite part was the middle section and the only way to make it better would have been if it was slightly shorter."I hope you have a fantastic day wherever you are in the world. You can't talk about confidence artists and their games without talking about one of the classics: the shell game. It's been called a lot of things over the decades, and during the time and place we're going to visit in this episode, it was 'thimblerig'. It's often portrayed as a gambling game, but it's actually a con used to fleece unsuspecting bettors. Samuel Bennett was one of the best-known 'thimbleriggers' – perhaps ever, depending who you ask – and he made a fortune scamming passengers on steamboats along America's waterways in the 19th century.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Imagine waking up in a strange and wonderful place with no memory and no one to guide you. Your world is filled with strange creatures and incredible beauty along with one enigmatic creature who looks similar to you but is still quite different. Here is the sequel to “Extracts from Adam's Diary.” When Mark Twain (whose real name was Samuel Clemens) wrote “Eve's Diary” he was in his 80s and had enjoyed and long career as an author, speaker, and publisher. Two years before its publication, Twain had penned “Extracts from Adam's Diary” (also available on Litreading). Shortly thereafter his wife of 34 years, Olivia (Lily) died. While he never explicitly said as much, many believe this to be his final love letter to her. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
What must life have been like in the Garden of Eden for the first man, Adam, and that new creature who suddenly appeared in his idyllic life? Well, left to the imagination of Mark Twain, the story takes a fanciful and funny early 20th-century take on Genesis. Extracts from Adam's Diary was written in 1904, the final decade of Samuel Clemens's (aka Mark Twain's) life, and was published as a short book. The character of Adam is obviously based on Twain himself, and Eve was his wife Lily. Shortly after writing this story, Lily died. This may have led to Twain penning “The Diary of Eve,” which was first published in 1905. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
(Republished from June 2020.) I recently interviewed Samuel Clemens, Partner at Accomplice VC & Founder of Reprise, which helps customer facing teams capture, edit, and assemble the perfect demo every time. We discussed the 3 types of sales leaders critical to early stage start-up success. The first type is simply founder-led sales because they know the product best and should be able to close the first handful of sales on passion--as long as their is market fit. The second type of sales leader is what he calls the expeditionary sales leader who can help create and define a repeatable playbook. The third type of sales leader is someone that is process based and can take that playbook, refine it, and then scale the sales team. Additionally, he shared the critical attributes needed in each sales leader, the one thing that he thinks really defines an organization's culture, the 3 big mistakes he's made in the past when scaling a sales organization, what sales leaders should NOT do during their Board meetings, and much more.
480. We talk to James 'Jed' Dobson on Samuel Clemens. Mark Twain wrote Life on the Mississippi, a memoir about his time as a cub river boat pilot. Twain's version of the Mississippi River has colored the way the nation looks at the river. Jed discusses the difference in the way Clemens looked at Mardi Gras when he was in his 20s versus the more negative account in Life on the Mississippi, when he was in his late 40s. This week in Louisiana history. July 30, 1812. William Charles Cole Claiborne becomes the 1st American Governor of Louisiana. This week in New Orleans history. On July 30, 1866 New Orleans descended into racial violence that, by the end of the day, would leave an estimated 38 individuals dead and dozens injured. Racial tensions, which were already high soon after the close of the Civil War, flared after African Americans were denied the right to vote. The enactment of the so-called “Black Codes” infuriated Republicans determined to secure citizenship rights for all Americans, and they ultimately reconvened the Louisiana Constitutional Convention in hopes of seizing control of the state government. During a break in the Convention, violence broke out between armed white supremacists and African Americans marching in support of suffrage—and the African Americans were not prepared for the fight. Unarmed African Americans were attacked and murdered, and many law enforcement officials perpetrated the crimes. This week in Louisiana. Families flock to Chemin-A-Haut for its many activities geared toward kids. Thirty-five picnic sites, equipped with grills and tables, welcome families looking to dine al fresco. Coursing through these picnic sites and nearby shelters is a hard-surfaced trail that rises to hills overlooking Bayou Bartholomew. It turned out to be the discovery of a lifetime and the start of an ancient curse. *** The Wendigo… a shapeshifter, a cannibal, and many believe it to be completely real. *** Puzzling loud booms have been heard in many locations this year and despite lots of speculations no-one knows what's behind this disturbing phenomenon. *** Why would something want to possess a department-store mannequin? *** Samuel Clemens – better known as Mark Twain. There is a part of his life that is all too often ignored by historians and biographers.
