In this episode, Mark interviews Kevin J. Anderson about his writing and the new approach he is taking to incorporate Kickstarter into the launch strategies for some of his indie-published titles. Prior to the interview, Mark shares a personal update, comments from recent episodes, and a word from this episode's sponsor. Learn more about this self-publishing/WIDE-publishing focused cruise. In their interview Mark and Kevin talk about: How Kickstarter has completely upended (in a good way), Kevin's book release strategies Kevin's first novel coming out in 1988 and all the various publishers he has worked with over the years The "Perfect Storm" that was brewing in the book industry when indie publishing became a realistic and viable option Starting to publish his own books (mostly backlist titles he got the rights back to) in 2009 after founding WordFire Press with his wife Rebecca Moesta Kevin's belief that this is the best time to be a writer How Kevin does a little bit of everything. He has a New York literary agent, he works with several major publishers, he indie publishes, and he continues to explore new opportunities that digital publishing offer The way that Kickstarter didn't just open a new door, it completely blew it down, along with a few walls too Dean Wesley Smith's perspective that helped to change Kevin's mind about what Kickstarter was all about Kevin's "Adams Family meets The Naked Gun" series of Dan Shamble Zombie PI novels, and the history of how it started off as a series with a major publisher, flopped, then Kevin got the rights back and did something truly stunning with it once he applied Kickstarter Kevin's first Dan Shamble Kickstarter which brought in 23 times the intial amount he was asking for, and that it paid him more than 6 times the advance he'd rec'd from a major publisher for the last Dan Shamble book he'd done with them The Dragon Business (The Princess Bride meets Dirty Rotten Scoundrels) Kickstarter that brought in 20 times what he'd been asking for The Persephone Kickstarter that Kevin did with Writer/Director Jeffrey Morris Kevin's latest Kickstarter which is a 7 Volume Set of over 130 of his published short stories published over 50 years Writing his first short story when he was 8 years old Publishing his very first short story when he was 14 The personal introductions that he wrote for every one of the stories in this 7 book collection The various levels and Kickstarter rewards he is planning for this Kickstarter The remarkable fact that, despite having published 180 novels with 58 of them being international bestsellers, no publisher would ever even consider publishing a 7 volume hardcover set of Kevin's complete short stories. That he can do this via Kickstarter is a significant paradigm shift How Kickstarter can replace the old "advance" model from traditional publishing The special thing Kevin is doing for all the backers of this latest Kickstarter The Kickstarter will be going live on April 30th for 3 weeks and 2 days And more . . . Where we left off, Dion Fortune was in the midst of a divorce and living in The Belfry, about to embark on a new leg of her journey. This time I'm getting into the good, the bad, and the ugly the details of one of the most influential people in modern paganism and Wicca.
Katherine Hall Page was born and grew up in New Jersey, graduating from Livingston High School. Her father was the Executive Director of The Kessler Institute for Rehabilitation and her mother was an artist. Page has an older brother and a younger sister. Early on the family developed a love of the Maine coast, spending summer vacations on Deer Isle. She received her BA from Wellesley College, majoring in English and went on to a Masters in Secondary Education from Tufts and a Doctorate in Administration, Public Planning, and Social Policy from Harvard. College had brought her to Massachusetts and she continues to reside there. Before her career as a full-time writer, Ms. Page taught at the high school level for many years. She developed a program for adolescents with special emotional needs, a school within a school model, that dealt with issues of truancy, substance abuse, and family relationships. Those five years in particular were rich ones for her. This interest in individuals and human behavior later informed her writing.Married for forty-eight years to Professor Alan Hein, an experimental psychologist at MIT, the couple have a forty-year-old son. It was during her husband's sabbatical year in France after the birth of their son that Ms. Page wrote her first mystery, The Body in the Belfry, 1991 Agatha Award winner for Best First Mystery Novel. The fifteenth in the series, The Body in the Snowdrift, won the 2006 Agatha Award for Best Mystery Novel. Ms. Page was also awarded the 2001 Agatha for Best Short Story for "The Would-Be Widower" in the Malice Domestic X collection (Avon Books). She was an Edgar nominee for her juvenile mystery, Christie & Company Down East. The Body in the Bonfire was an Agatha nominee in 2003. Page's short story, "The Two Mary's" was an Agatha nominee in 2004. The Body in the Lighthouse (2003) was one of three nominees for The Mary Higgins Clark Award. The Body in the Boudoir was a finalist in the 2013 Maine Literary Awards. Her series cookbook, Have Faith in Your Kitchen, was nominated for an Agatha in the non-fiction category, making her the first author to be nominated or win in all four Agatha categories. Katherine Hall Page received the 2016 Lifetime Achievement Award from Malice Domestic and Crime Master for her work from the Maine Writers and Publishers Alliance. The Body in the Web is out now from William Morrow in hardcover, paperback, large print, E-book, and audio editions. Ms. Page was named a 2024 Grand Master by MWA.Descended from Norwegian-Americans on her mother's side and New Englanders on her father's, Ms. Page grew up listening to all sorts of stories. She remains an unabashed eavesdropper and will even watch your slides or home movies to hear your narration. Her books are the product of all the strands of her life and she plans to keep weaving.Facebook Page https://www.Facebook.com/Katherinehallpage/ Website www.katherine-hall-page.org *****************About SinCSisters in Crime (SinC) was founded in 1986 to promote the ongoing advancement, recognition and professional development of women crime writers. It was a tale that most considered simply gossip, or the town's urban legend. The rich and powerful made sure it stayed a secret; but all secrets eventually come to light – especially those covered in racism, tragedy, and hundreds of deaths. It's the truth behind the Hawk's Nest Tunnel tragedy. (Town Of The Living Dead) *** A teenager shares his story of being abducted by aliens. You may dismiss it as a nightmare or sleep paralysis, but then how do you explain the injection marks on his body? (Tall Black Shiny Aliens) *** A Weirdo family member tells us why we should be cautious when we hear dogs howling. (When The Dogs Howl) *** Most stories about the men in black are of an aggressive nature, with victims being questioned by them, even threatened into remaining silent. But one man had a strange encounter where the MIB saved his life. (Helped By Four Men In Black) *** It's always a bit scary sleeping in a new house that very first night. But sometimes, as one Weird Darkness fan discovered, there is reason to be frightened. (Whispers In The Night) *** They found the first body stuffed inside the church library's closet. Then a second body turned up. I'll share the creepy case of Theo Durrant – San Francisco's “Jack the Ripper”. (Demon of the Belfry) *** Outside of Washington, D.C. lies an abandoned institution with a thoroughly disturbing past. Three o'clock has struck. Up steep ladders, on the top platform of the belfry inside Rye Church, the ancient clock counts through this small night hour. Its regular sound blends with long and undulating gusts of fresh sea air. Air that's travelled, over miles of sand, shingle and marshland, from out on the open sea. An ever changing pressure of moving air sighs between the shuttered rafters. Rattles the steel flagpole outside on the castellated parapet wall. Resonates down inside the tower to the ringing chamber below, as a soft, dark, velvety rumble. And though without any form, not least arms and hands, somehow lifts and knocks the dead weight of a loose slab of exposed stonework. When the wind slackens, am amazing thing happens. Not only does the presence of moving air seem to disappear from this aural view, but much of the structure of the belfry too. A kind of transparency comes about, and a panoramic image appears. Of the surrounding landscape beyond. Subtle. More like the presence that a hanging silk curtain creates than any nameable sound. Fabric like, and thin. but definitely there. And you know when you're hearing it because instead of the tower, you feel all that there is around you, are the panoramic murmurings of the land that is Rye and Romney Marsh. * Our grateful thanks again go to Revd Paul White of St Mary's church at Rye for enabling the Lento boxes to be left to capture the quiet inside.

In addition to 6 short science fiction stories in the 1950s, Robert Zacks wrote TV episodes for 7 shows in the 50s. From “Startling Stories Magazine” in May 1952, the first story ever published written by Robert Zacks, From Outer Space August Derleth grew up in Sauk City, Wisconsin. He wrote his first fiction story at 13. His stories were rejected 40 times over 3 years before he sold “Bat's Belfry” to “Weird Tales Magazine” in 1926. “Birkett's Twelfth Corpse” can be found in “Strange Stories Magazine” in August 1940.Evan Hunter has been on the podcast before. He wrote one of my favorites, “The Plagiarist From Rigel IV”. “Only one question seemed important in this huge space venture: Who was flying where?” We'll find our story on page 57 of the May 1952 issue of “If Worlds of Science Fiction”, Welcome, Martians! Up next a short tale about a strange entity on a distant world. Our strange story was written by Henry Kuttner and this is his first short sci-fi story on the podcast. He sold his first story, “The Graveyard Rats” to “Weird Tales Magazine” in 1936. Kuttner contributed several stories to the Cthulhu Mythos genre including today's story. Open your January 1937 copy of“Weird Tales Magazine” to page 93 for “The Eater of Souls” Our next story was written by I. M. Bukstein. An exhaustive search for the author found absolutely nothing. “No, sir, we wasn't fooled by them lights in the night sky. Illusionations, we call 'em. Funny though, Willie disappeared that night!” From “Imagination Stories of Science and Fantasy” in October 1952, turn to page 112 for “Hey Ma, Where's Willie”Fredric Brown is known for his mastery of the super short sci-fi stories.Would you try to save your wife from a killer? Seems like a. simple question, but to Mandy's husband, it was one to stump the experts. We'll find our story on page 100 of “Black Mask Magazine” in November 1948. Cry Silence We heard from Fritz Leiber only a week ago. “This is how it all began—the terrible civil strife that devastates our world!” Turn to page 57 in the debut issue of “Worlds of Tomorrow Magazine”, in April 1963 for “X Marks the Pedwalk” Robert Sheckley, made his debut on our podcast just two days ago. We'll find our story on page 19 of the October-November issue of “Amazing Stories Magazine.” Beside Still Waters“Only Shervane dared to learn the mind-shattering truth of that incredible barrier!”The Wall of Darkness by Arthur C. It's the creepy case of Theo Durrant – better known in San Francisco as the Demon of the Belfry. (Demon of the Belfry) *** In 1989 a man anonymously claimed he had worked at Area 51 where alien technology was being reverse-engineered for the Pentagon. It sounded like the crazed thoughts of a madman at the time. But now, thirty years later, it does not seem so absurd. (Bob Lazar, The Pentagon, And UFOs) *** One of our Weirdo family members tells the true story of a young child told not to be sad when her grandfather passes away… before anyone knew he had died. (The Old Woman In The Basement) *** Some very strange things have been taking place in Sedona Arizona – including ghosts, UFOs, and even people supposedly seeing living dinosaurs. (Strangeness at the Bradshaw Ranch) *** Is it possible that the reason Jack The Ripper was never caught, is because he was only visiting London at the time and then returned to his home in Missouri, USA? (Was Jack The Ripper From St. Louis?) *** It's a story called “Murder Without Motive”. It's a chapter from the upcoming audiobook I'm narrating called “Suffer The Children: American Horrors, Homicides, and Hauntings” by Troy Taylor.SOURCES AND ESSENTIAL WEB LINKS…“Murder Without Motive” by Troy Taylor from the audiobook “Suffer The Children”: https://amzn.to/2YNrSdk “Was Jack The Ripper From St. Louis?” by Troy Taylor: http://bit.ly/2HG5QUh “Demon of the Belfry” by Orrin Grey: http://bit.ly/2JJbsiO “Bob Lazar, The Pentagon, And UFOs” by George Knapp and Matt Adams: http://bit.ly/30IC60u “Strangeness at the Bradshaw Ranch” by Brent Swancer: http://bit.ly/2JI4Dhz “The Old Woman In The Basement” by Ashley Delia, submitted directly to WeirdDarkness.com= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =Weird Darkness theme by Alibi Music Library. Part two of Theodore Durrant is here and we start off with Blanche Lamont's body being discovered. When you hear the difference between the state of Blanche's body in comparison to Minnie's you will be absolutely baffled. But have no fear, Alaina shares with us a theory as to why both bodies were found in such different states. We then go through the trial and find out whether Theo will pay for these crimes with his life, or get off scot-free.Daily Inter Ocean. 1895. "Another Body Found." Theodore Durrant was the last person anyone would have assumed to commit a brutal murder, let alone two. He was well-known in town and well-liked. He served the town in countless ways; as the handyman for the church, the handyman to all his friends and neighbors, assistant superintendent of the church's Sunday School and all around friendly and giving man. But soon he would be linked to two absolutely horrific murders of two young women in town that he'd had relations with. Ones body would be discovered in the church that Theo seemed to love and the other? Well you'll have to wait for part two for that discovery.Daily Inter Ocean. 1895. "Another Body Found." You may dismiss it as a nightmare or sleep paralysis, but then how do you explain the injection marks on his body? (The Madness of Forest Haven Asylum) *** It was a tale that most considered simply gossip, or the town's urban legend. The rich and powerful made sure it stayed a secret; but all secrets eventually come to light – especially those covered in racism, tragedy, and hundreds of deaths.
