Retired FBI agent and criminal profiler Candice DeLong delves into the case of Paul Michael Stephani, also known as the “Weepy-Voiced Killer.” A serial murderer who terrorized women around St-Paul in the early 80s, Stephani got his moniker because he would place anonymous calls to the police and report his own crimes in a whiny, high-pitched, weepy voice. Was he looking to be found? Was his remorse real? Candice explores why this killer would confess in 911 calls, and how his strict religious upbringing influenced his penchant for murder.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

This week on WDDD, La Shaunda delves into the disturbing case of the "Weepy Voiced Killer." In the early 1980s, Minneapolis-St. Paul was gripped with fear as a serial killer terrorized the area, preying on vulnerable women. Within hours or days of each murder, the local dispatch would receive a chilling call from a whiny man instructing them to "not speak, just listen," as he divulged the details of his latest atrocity. It was these unsettling calls that ultimately led to the identification and capture of the violent and terrifying killer, Paul Michael Stephani. Paul Stephani was the youngest of ten children. His mother remarried his stepfather when Paul was 3 years old, although he claims his stepfather was abusive towards him and his siblings when he came into their lives. Paul moved to Saint Paul, Minneapolis later on in his life taking on various jobs but just couldn't keep one and would blame this on the fact that as a child he was diagnosed with epilepsy. He finally met a woman by the name of Beverly Lider and the two married in 1970 and had a daughter together, although that relationship would not work as the couple divorced after 5 years of marriage. Then Paul abandoned his daughter and started dating another woman for about 4 years although she left him for an arranged marriage which she had no control of, this devastated Paul because he thought they were going to get married. He started working as a janitor at the Malmberg Manufacturing Company in 1977 but he was fired from that job. His life started to spiral out of control so he turned to a life of crime and murder.

A series of attacks and murders ends with strange calls to 911. These calls weren't from the victims or the onlookers, but rather the killer himself. While he was so emotional on these calls he earned the name "the weepy voiced killer", it didn't seem to deter him from continuing his violent streak. That is, until he found someone that would cause his downfall. To access earlier episodes of Corpus Delicti and to help support the show, please visit patreon.com/corpusdelictiOur merch store can be found at teepublic.com/stores/corpus-delicti-podcastMusic by:Kai Engel"Daemones"Blooper music by:Art of Escapism"Coal Miners"This work is licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License. Paul Michael Stephani had a rough upbringing, like many do. But in adulthood he started getting urges to kill that he could not ignore. And how was he caught? It had a lot to do with the fact that he called the police after almost every attack and had a very recognizable voice. This show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/4106013/advertisement

Find Weird Darkness wherever you listen to podcasts: https://linktr.ee/weirddarkness IN THIS EPISODE: North Carolina's Great Dismal Swamp is full of horror stories – but the worst might be the fact that the swamp appears to swallow people alive. (Swallowed Alive In Great Dismal Swamp) *** A weeping man called the police to tearfully apologize for murdering his victims… but that didn't stop him from continuing to kill again and again. (The Weepy Voiced Killer) *** In Hindu culture, it is believed if certain post-death rituals are not conducted on those who have passed away, the deceased's family would not prosper and there would be misfortunes aplenty. One family in Bhutan had to learn that the hard way. (The Stoning Ghost of Sombek) *** An apparent incident involving a “gigantic cigar-shaped UFO” somewhere over the Atlantic Ocean in May 1963 wasn't reported for almost 20 years, when a witness to the event finally came forward through a written letter of the incident. (The Atlantic UFO of 1963) *** In a beautiful little town in North Wales, children ran through the graveyard, searching for little men with big eyes and long ears. They were searching for strange fairy folk – the ‘brownies' of Bangor. (The Brownies of Bangor) *** Serial killer Ed Gein was caught and arrested for his crimes in November of 1957 – but that didn't mean Gein's neighbors would see the end of his influence on their lives. (Selling Ed Gein) *** Four people take a trip to France and stay at hotel that appeared too good to be true – because it was. Despite the absence of the great Cal Donjolla, Firman and I perservered to speak about and make fun of the most pussy voiced, baby ass voiced, titty suckin' ass, balloon huffin' ass voiced killer we've covered yet, Paul Michael Stephani. This bitch baby would commit vicious attacks then call 911 to report the crimes, apologize and whine in the most pathetic voice imaginable. On top of all this, Firman regales us with yet another unsettling personal story.
In the early 80s, a serial killer was murdering women in the twin cities of Minnesota with an ice pick. After each attack, he would call 911 weeping and begging for the police to put an end to his terror. It was only after one of his victims escaped that Paul Michael Stephani was finally apprehended. Fifteen years later, when Paul learned he had terminal cancer, he made a full confession of all his crimes, which included a murder completely off the authorities' radar. Listen to this episode to hear his ultra-annoying voice and the unsavory details of his murder spree.Join us on Facebook and IG: @HARDCORETRUECRIMEWeb: www.crimesandconsequences.com-------->Get ad-free early releases of each episode, plus over 170 exclusive Members Only episodes by going to Patreon.com/tntcrimes or joining our Apple Channel on the Apple Podcast App. ------>Sources:1) State v. This week Alaina covers the weepy voiced killer for our 209th episode! In 1980 on New Year's Eve Paul Michael Stephani brutally attacked Karen Potack after abducting her from outside of a bar. She sustained some of the worst injuries seen by investigators, but she lived. This would be the first in a string of bizarre an gruesome attacks on women that potentially would lead to murder. The strangest piece of this case is that the killer called the police himself to report the attack....an he did it while weeping hysterically.
