After the establishment of Christianity in the Roman Empire, the Emperor Gallus had a church built in honor of Babylas near the site of a temple to Apollos at Daphne, outside Antioch. (This was where, according to pagan legend, the maiden Daphne had been turned into a tree to escape the lust of Apollos). When Julian the Apostate came to Antioch in 362 to consult a famous oracle there, he found that the oracle had been deprived of its power by the presence of a Christian church nearby. He ordered the relics of St Babylas to be dug up and removed from the Church. As soon as this had been done a thunderbolt destroyed the shrine of Apollo, which Julian did not dare to rebuild. Saint John Chrysostom, then Archbishop of Antioch, preached a sermon on these events within a generation after their occurrence.
"Born a pagan in Persia in the time of the Emperor Constantine, he came to know the Christian faith as a young man, forsook his paganism and received baptism. He was so enchanted with the true Faith that he left all worldly things and became a monk in a monastery near the town of Nisibis. He lived among the brethren for some time, then withdrew into silence, going to Archimandrite Urbel, of whom it is said that, for sixty years, he never ate anything cooked. Urbel made him a deacon, but, when he wanted to make him a priest, Dometius fled to a distant mountain and settled in a cave there. He attained such perfection through fasting, prayer, vigils and meditation that he was able to heal the sick. When Julian the Apostate came to that place, he heard of Dometius and sent men to wall him up alive in the came, with two of his disciples. Thus died this saint of God, in 363, and went to the Kingdom of God." (Prologue). The Great Horologion says that Dometius and his disciples were stoned to death.

According to a legend, while Julian was a baby, he was cursed to one-day kill his own parents. His father wanted him killed, but his mother kept him alive. When he was old enough to learn of the curse, he left his family to preserve their safety. While he was hunting, his mother and father made an unexpected visit to his castle. His wife gave them one of the best rooms. He received a vision from the devil that his wife was in his bed with another man, and he returned home to kill whoever was in his bed. When Julian returned from his hunt and saw the two figures in bed, he assumed it was his wife with a lover. In a jealous rage, Julian killed his mother and father.Julian was so horrified upon learning the truth that he swore to devote the remainder of his life to good works. He and his wife then undertook a pilgrimage to a distant country where he established a hospital. The hospital was near a river that was frequently crossed by people prompted to travel by the Holy Crusades. People frequently drowned crossing this river so Julian took responsibility of ferrying travelers across and tending to the sick. One night, the devil vandalized his house, and blaming it on those he helped, Julian said that he would never house anyone else ever again. God showed up at his door, asking for help, and he denied Him. After recognizing him, he retracted his statement and decided to help all those who needed it once again./p>One night, thieves came into their hospital and killed Julian and his wife in the same way Julian had killed his mother and father. There were great miracles without end in that place and land, recounts the legend. So many that, as it pleased God, their bodies were brought to Brioude (France).St. Julian is considered the patron of ferrymen, innkeepers and circus performers. The priest Theodoretus was custodian of a great cathedral in Antioch, built by the Emperor Constantine and known in its time as 'the golden church' for the beauty and luxury of its appointments. When Julian the Apostate came to the throne, he denied Christ and launched a persecution of Christians. The Emperor's uncle, also named Julian, came to Antioch to prosecute the persecution there. After plundering the church he brought Theodoretus to trial and demanded that he deny Christ. Instead, the faithful priest confessed Christ fervently and rebuked the Emperor for having denied the faith and returned to idol-worship 'as a dog returns to its vomit.' In spite, the judge urinated in the golden church, for which Theodoretus prophesied that he would die a terrible death. Theodoretus was beheaded, and Julian his judge was seized with terrible abdominal pain from the moment he defiled the church until he died in torment. Note: Theodoretus is commemorated on March 3 in the Greek Calendar
At the lowest point in Julian's career, his former mentor, William Blanchard, threw him a much-needed lifeline. Blanchard offered Julian a position to teach organic chemistry at DePauw University in 1932. Julian then helped Josef Pikl, a fellow student at the University of Vienna, to come to the United States to work with him at DePauw. In 1935 Julian and Pikl completed the total synthesis of physostigmine and confirmed the structural formula assigned to it. Robert Robinson of Oxford University in the U.K. had been the first to publish a synthesis of physostigmine, but Julian noticed that the melting point of Robinson's end product was wrong, indicating that he had not created it. When Julian completed his synthesis, the melting point matched the correct one for natural physostigmine from the calabar bean. Julian also extracted stigmasterol, which took its name from Physostigma venenosum, the west African calabar bean that he hoped could serve as raw material for synthesis of human steroidal hormones. At about this time, in 1934, Butenandt and Fernholz, in Germany had shown that stigmasterol, isolated from soybean oil, could be converted to progesterone by synthetic organic chemistry. In 1936 Julian was denied a professorship at DePauw for racial reasons. DuPont had offered a job to fellow chemist Josef Pikl but declined to hire Julian, despite his superlative qualifications as an organic chemist, apologizing that they were "unaware he was a Negro". Julian next applied for a job at the Institute of Paper Chemistry (IPC) in Appleton, Wisconsin. However, Appleton was a sundown town, forbidding African Americans from staying overnight, stating directly: "No Negro should be bed or boarded overnight in Appleton." Meanwhile, Julian had written to the Glidden Company, a supplier of soybean oil products, to request a five-gallon sample of the oil to use as his starting point for the synthesis of human steroidal sex hormones (in part because his wife was suffering from infertility). After receiving the request, W. J. O'Brien, a vice-president at Glidden, made a telephone call to Julian, offering him the position of director of research at Glidden's Soya Products Division in Chicago. He was very likely offered the job by O'Brien because he was fluent in German, and Glidden had just purchased a modern continuous countercurrent solvent extraction plant from Germany for the extraction of vegetable oil from soybeans for paints and other uses Information Sourced From: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Percy_Lavon_Julian Body Sourced From; https://youtu.be/KSq__sdYNNk Public Access America PublicAccessPod Productions Footage edited by PublicAccessPod producer of Public Access America Podcast Links Stitcher: goo.gl/XpKHWB iTunes: goo.gl/soc7KG GooglePlay: goo.gl/gPEDbf YouTube goo.gl/xrKbJb
Julian Hayes II is a health & fitness consultant, a nutrition coach, a sleep science coach, and the author of Body Architect: A Real-World Guide to Ignite Your Fitness, Look Awesome Naked, Quiet the Inner Voices of Self-Doubt, & Design a Lifestyle on Your Own Terms. In this episode, we discuss the science (and importance) of sleep. When Julian or I work with our clients, we both focus on sleep first and foremost. High-quality sleep is vital for both healing and sustaining wellness, so it has to be addressed before anything else. While the body appears, from the outside, to be still and inactive, the body is quite busy when you are asleep. It is restocking hormones, processing toxins, repairing damaged tissues, generating white blood cells, eliminating the effects of stress, and processing heavy emotions, among other things. “There's no aspect of your life that goes untouched when you skimp on sleep.” –Julian Hayes II If you don't get enough high-quality sleep, the results can be quite drastic: You age faster, at a cellular level. The immune system is weakened, and you're more likely to develop a metabolic syndrome. Hunger is affected and the metabolism slows, so you're more likely to gain weight. Mood is worsened, and our capacity for empathy is diminished. Cognitive performance declines. Leadership skills are negatively affected. This all adds up to a significant and measurable impact on our nation's productivity. Rand performed a study that found that insufficient sleep in the U.S. workforce costs up to $411 billion, and causes the country to lose the equivalent of about 1.23 million working days. How do you get a good night's sleep? Julian likes to break it down into a checklist: Reframe your attitude and mindset around sleep. There's a difference between ‘getting by' on not enough sleep and thriving with adequate sleep. Visualize how achieving your goals will be affected by lack of sleep. Set sleep goals and milestones. Develop a simple meditation practice. Practice gratitude. Julian writes down three things he's grateful for every morning, and then does a nightly review of three good things that happened during the day. Learn to handle stress better and build more resiliency. Make the room as dark as possible. Sleep in cooler temperatures. Create a sleep sanctuary, or sleep cave. Eating leafy green vegetables will give you more vitamin C, potassium, and vitamin B6. Eat tryptophan. Eat carbs a couple hours before bed so your blood sugar can get back to its baseline level. Nutrition Preferably in the morning because that's when cortisol peaks Exercise Reserve your bed for sleep or sex, and nothing else. Give yourself an electronic curfew, at least an hour before bed. Programs like f.lux or built-in sleep modes on newer cellphones will dim your screen and change the tint. Get blue blocking glasses, or install low-wattage yellow, orange, or red light bulbs. Get sunlight in the morning. Lifestyle habits Don't get dehydrated. Practice light therapy. If you travel often… Your first and last hour of the day are critical. Develop a morning and night routine Don't try to change everything at once, or make a massive changes in your lifestyle. Start with incremental changes, and the progress will give you the momentum you need to make more positive changes. -- Resources: Connect with Julian: The Art of Fitness and Life | Facebook | Instagram | LinkedIn | Twitter | YouTube Read: Body Architect: A Real-World Guide to Ignite Your Fitness, Look Awesome Naked, Quiet the Inner Voices of Self-Doubt, & Design a Lifestyle on Your Own Terms Download: Simple Habit Meditation App Check out the https://www.litebook.com/ (Litebook) & learn about light therapy Do you want more to empower yourself through healthy living?
