The problem of pain is the horror that haunts people of faith most. The presence of suffering often scares people away from a picture of a loving all-powerful God. How can we hang on to religious hope living in a reality with monstrous miseries? Dr. John Peckham, research professor of Christian theology and philosophy at Andrews University, and author of Theodicy of Love and Why We Pray, joins Dr. Pierce to examine the never-ending nightmare of why bad things happen to good people. ROMANS 15:13 NASU: 13 Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that you will abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. Secular Definitions of ‘hope’: (from Oxford Languages Dictionary) 1a. a feeling of expectation and desire for a certain thing to happen 1b. a person or thing that may help or save someone 1c. grounds for believing something good may happen Biblical Definitions of ‘hope’: (from Old and New Testament words/usage) OT usages: to wait, to hope, to expect, to be bound to (frequently in or to YHWH Himself) NT usages: favorable & confident expectation, to trust, look forward with assurance (related to faith—linked with Joy and Peace—God is the God of Hope) Romans 5:1-6 – Hope is woven inextricably into all this: 1 Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, 2 through whom also we have obtained our introduction by faith into this grace in which we stand; and we exult (NT:2744 [kauchaomai] = boast, vaunt, rejoice) in hope of the glory of God. 3 And not only this, but we also exult in our tribulations, knowing that tribulation brings about perseverance; 4 and perseverance, proven character; and proven character, hope; 5 and hope does not disappoint (NT:2617 [kataischuno] = shame down, put to the blush, dishonor) , because the love of God has been poured out within our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us. 6 For while we were still helpless, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. HOPE is part of: Peace with God – Faith into Grace – Boasting in God’s Glory – Boasting in Our Tribulation –Growing Perseverance – Proven Character – Resistance to Disappointment –God’s own LOVE (showing up in my heart!) – Steady, Consistent Hope in God Himself (Father, Son-Savior, and our Indwelling and Empowering Holy Spirit) All while we started out as helpless! Why We Pray and What It Means is the topic that will be discussed today on RIOT Podcast, a Christian Discipleship Podcast.
Gerald Murphy is the Lead Pastor of Garden City Church with his wife Lauren. On Sunday, October 29th, Gerald delivered a sermon at Rock City Church called "Why We Pray for Israel." He delivered it with intention, passion, truth and love. I wanted my friend to come on today to talk about his ministry but also go a little deeper into what he delivered on Sunday. Prayer is crucial to the Christian life, as it serves as a means to converse with our Heavenly Father. Each week we create space for a time of prayer, a time to enter into prayer individually and with others. Join Pastor Jordan Michalski and Michael Mundey as they explore “Why We Pray" and its impact on our lives.
Because of our new life in Christ, we ought to have a new focus. Our focus should shift from our old identity to our new identity. Our focus should shift from what we can do in our flesh to what we can do in the Spirit. We no longer focus on the trials and tribulations we endure, but we focus on the power at work in and through us.
Prayer is pervasive in the New Testament. Just as Jesus prays at all the major events of his life, even so the followers of Jesus pray at all the significant turning points in the book of Acts. Just as prayer was habitual and routine in the life of Jesus, the early Christians devoted themselves to prayer. The sermon today is titled "Prayer" It is the sixth installment in our "Community" Series. The Scripture reading is from Acts 2:42 (ESV). Originally preached at the West Side Church of Christ (Searcy, AR) on May 28, 2023. All lessons fit under one of 5 broad categories: Begin, Discover, Grow, Learn, and Serve. That's Why We Pray by The Anchor Church: Zanesville
When the disciples could ask Jesus to teach them anything, they asked this: “Lord, teach us to pray” (Luke 11:1). Here's why: Prayer is a declaration of war on this self-centered, self-sufficient, short-term kind of living. Prayer is the spinal column of your walk with God, deeply and inextricably connected to the way you walk. When you think about the rhythms of your life, is prayer a priority? Have you prayed to ask God for your needs? For repentance? For your loved ones or your enemies? When you pray, you have the full attention of God, but first you have to know the power for the soul that lies in prayer.Take up the challenge to rethink prayer, and stop 3x a day to sit, talk with, and listen to your Father.Support the show (http://bit.ly/2NZkdrC)

In our "Why We? series we are addressing the things we do in the assembly. Not only do we pray in our corporate worship, it's something we do all the time in our Christian walk.
