Struggling with anxiety as a Christian can feel confusing—especially when verses like John 14:1 tell us not to let our hearts be troubled. But Jesus’ response to anxiety isn’t harsh correction—it’s compassionate invitation. In moments of fear and overwhelm, He offers peace, not pressure. His words weren’t spoken to shame anxious hearts but to comfort them, reminding us that trust in Him is the pathway to lasting peace. True peace isn’t something we manufacture through perfect prayers or flawless faith—it’s something we receive from Jesus. You believe in God; believe also in me.” - John 14:1 NIV As someone with a long history of anxiety, I used to feel guilt and condemnation when I read today’s verse and others like it. I knew Scripture told me, in numerous places, not to fear. I understood the importance of “taking my thoughts captive. I also recognized that I’d remain stuck in my overwhelm and whatever habitual battle I faced unless I allowed the Lord to transform me as I intentionally renewed my mind with God’s unchanging truth. Yet, I consistently found myself enslaved to my spinning anxious thoughts that felt far too strong to counter or correct. My problem was two-fold. First, I expected instant healing and freedom. I thought if I said the right prayers, memorized enough Scripture, and chose to yield my circumstances to Christ, bam! He’d instantly erase all the lies and doubts fueling my fears and flood my brain and soul with His promises—which, of course, would stick, indefinitely. Second, I misread Jesus’ invitation to trust as a harsh command that brought Him frustration when not lived out. But our Savior is gentle and humble in heart and longs to provide rest, not guilt and shame, to our souls (Matthew 11:28). When I read John 14 through that lens, I see Christ’s words as tender reassurance spoken from a place of compassionate awareness that fearful times lie ahead. The context of today’s verse supports this. If you’re familiar with the events surrounding Christ’s crucifixion, you might recognize the circumstances surrounding His words. On the night before His death, He gathered His disciples in an upper room to celebrate the Passover. During this sacred meal, He predicted several unsettling things: He’d soon leave, and they couldn’t come. One of them would betray Him, they’d all abandon Him in His most painful moment, and Peter would deny three times that he even knew Him. But notice how Jesus bookended this difficult information. He began the chapter with today’s verse, telling them not to let their hearts be troubled but instead to trust in Him. Then, in verse 27, He repeated this with additional details when He said, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.” Intersecting Life & Faith: Peace. Biblically speaking, this word, eiréné in the original Greek, goes deeper than emotional tranquility. It signifies wholeness, well-being, and things as they should be. And notice, this soul-state comes from Him, not our frantic efforts to change or heal ourselves. Yes, we must do our part by consistently turning to Him through prayer, Bible reading, silent meditation, and practicing other spiritual disciplines. Scripture also encourages us to learn how to rely on and yield to the Holy Spirit more consistently and to do our best to obey, however He leads. Sometimes, this requires prayerfully considering ways we might be actively blocking or hindering our ability to receive Christ’s peace. Notice the phrasing in Colossians 3:15: Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful (NIV, emphasis mine). This seems to indicate that we already possess His peace but haven’t given it full reign for some reason. Perhaps we’re held captive to an addiction that leads to regretful behavior and damaged relationships, and the inner angst both scenarios create. Or, maybe we’re spending far more time reading fear-mongering clickbait articles than we are truth. Or we might feel reluctant to take medication that our brain needs to function optimally. Most, if not all, of us also tend to experience some degree of self-deception. Because of this, I’ve found it helpful to pray Psalm 139:23-24, which reads: Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts.See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting (NIV). The New American Standard Bible phrases the last line in this passage this way: … see if there is any hurtful way in me, And lead me in the everlasting way. Understand, I don’t pray this from a place of guilt or shame. Rather, I’m asking the One who knows me better than I know myself and sees the most hidden places in my soul to reveal those things within me that hinder my freedom. This is a request He loves to answer because it positions me for the deep transformation I need to experience the “beyond-expectations” thriving life He promised in John 10:10. Because only the Prince of Peace holds the power to calm and strengthen my wounded and fearful soul. He longs to do the same for you. The more you connect with, listen to, learn from, and follow Him, the easier it becomes to “believe in Him,” as today’s verse invites you to do. And the more we believe in Him—trusting His power, promises, and heart—the greater our peace. People shouted, “Hosanna.”OK TO SHOUT IN CHURCH! Celebration – Jesus is King! Collision – (crowd had plans for Jesus). Struggle: Sunday school vs Real world SS – beauty/heavendidn't always learn disappointment. Real: death/evil/devil/enemies If you were handed a “pretty Jesus” and a “pretty life,” disappointment can feel like betrayal. WHEN GOD DOESN'T DO IT THE WAY YOU WANTED AriaWe had plans, faith, belief Plans: home/family footprint, trips/holidays/ordinary days. Faith assumption: “God is going to heal her.” Prayed/believed/asked. Outcome: brain tumor / she passed. We had plans. We had belief. We had faith. Yet, it didn't go how we wanted. It doesn't just break your heart.It changes what hope feels like. Our story isn't the only story in the room. When God doesn't do it the way you wanted, you start concluding things. God doesn't care. God forgot me. God helps other people, but not me.It's probably me. I'm the problem. It's probably that I'm a sinner. It's probably that I'm not worthy. Disappointment doesn't just hurt – it redefines. It redefines… God, yourself, future. You had plans. You had belief. You had faith.And it still didn't turn out like you wanted it to. How does God address this in His Word?Let's look at it together on this Palm Sunday. PALM SUNDAY THROUGH THE LENS OF DISAPPOINTMENT 1) They wanted a King + they were desperate I want to read part of Luke 19. Luke 19:36-38 (NIV) As he went along, people spread their cloaks on the road… the whole crowd of disciples began joyfully to praise God in loud voices… ‘Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord!' They're not confused about what they want. They want a King. And they're shouting “Hosanna.” Hosanna is a pain word that means Save Us. It means: “Save us. Help us. Rescue us.” The tension: they didn't just want Jesus to save them.They wanted Him to save them their way. 2) They wanted saving their way. Under Rome: wanted overthrow, centurions cut down, Israel free, war + win. They had plans… belief… faith.They assumed Jesus would execute their plan. 3) Jesus defines the kind of King He is How did Jesus arrive in this story? (Donkey) Don't overlook it!Reveals Jesus… fulfills prophecy. Zechariah 9:9 (NIV)See, your king comes to you, righteous and victorious, lowly and riding on a donkey, Matthew 21:5 says Jesus came “gentle” riding on a donkey. Jesus is making a statement before He ever preaches a sermon. I am King.But I'm not the kind of King you can control. Do we want God's will to be done?Or do we want God to do our will? …God control my life?…God come under the control of my life? 4) Root problem vs visible problem They want Rome out. VISIBLE PROBLEM.Jesus is going to the root: sin, death, shame, and the powers underneath it all. ROOT PROBLEM. Empires cycle: Babylon → Persia → Greece → Rome. Remove one, another comes. Jesus came to break the cycle at the source. But they had other plans. 5) Did Jesus not care? We think this sometimes… Luke 19:41 (NIV) As he approached Jerusalem and saw the city, he wept over it… Jesus wept. He isn't cold. He isn't detached.He sees what is, and He sees what's coming, and it moves Him. And Jesus says something else in Scripture that shows His heart: Matthew 23:37 (NIV)Jerusalem, Jerusalem… how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you were not willing. Jesus is saying… “I wanted it different.”“I longed for something else.”“I had plans, belief, faith. Yet, it didn't go how we wanted.” 6) Jesus knows disappointment. Palm Sunday gives you a King with tears.A Savior with compassion.A God who understands. What do we do with disappointment? What do you do when God doesn't do it the way you wanted? Practice 1) Talk to God honestly (like Jesus did) Garden prayer – Luke 22:42 “Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done” Can you trust God with that? Jesus, here's what I wanted.Here's what happened.Here's what I'm afraid to hope for again.Help me trust You anyway. Don't edit your prayer. Bring the real thing. The real hurt and disappointment… Practice 2) Ask Jesus to reframe the story (before you finalize the conclusion) Name the default verdicts: I'm not worthy / I'm the problem / God is against me. Disappointment isn't the whole story. Jesus, reframe my story. Aria reframe: We wanted her home with us. Weeping on a walk in the park… phone call… “God wanted her home too – and God brought her home.” That doesn't erase grief.It changes the shape of the story. Practice this prayer: “Jesus, show me what You see.” Practice 3) Bring it into the light (don't do disappointment alone) Silence feels strong, but it usually isn't healing. TALK TO SOMEONE! trusted friend, pastor, small group, counselor. Resource: Patricia Muller podcast “Life Interrupted.” Grief grows in isolation.Hope grows in community. Imagine the kind of church we could become if we lived this. A place where disappointed people don't have to fake it. Where grief isn't treated like weakness. Where questions aren't treated like rebellion. Where we carry hope for each other until we can carry it again. A church where “Hosanna” isn't just a word we sing.It's a cry we can bring. It is ok to cry out… Jesus save me. Jesus save me……not how I want you to save me…save me how YOU want to save me. We had plans…belief…faith. And it still didn't go how we wanted. So here's what we're going to do – not later, not someday – right now. I have 3 responses for you… Respond to King Jesus. Respond to disappointment. Worship team is coming back. We're making a space for prayer. Here is how to respond… Step 1 – Talk to God honestly. Jesus, here's what I wanted.Here's what happened.Here's what I'm afraid to hope for again.Help me trust You anyway. Don't edit… get real. Step 2 – Don't do it alone. Pray.Talk.Counsel. Step 3 – Invite one person to Easter and pray for them. Name the person… Pray for them. MAKE THE DECISION – invite them.

Glorious on the Mountain, Gracious in the Valley 02/15/26 His face shone like the sun … and his clothes became as bright as a flash of lightning. — Matthew 17:2a; Luke 9:29b NIV 2 After six days Jesus took Peter, James and John with him and led them up a high mountain, where they were all alone. There he was transfigured before them. 3 His clothes became dazzling white, whiter than anyone in the world could bleach them. 4 And there appeared before them Elijah and Moses, who were talking with Jesus. 5 Peter said to Jesus, “Rabbi, it is good for us to be here. Let us put up three shelters—one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah.” 6 (He did not know what to say, they were so frightened.) 7 Then a cloud appeared and covered them, and a voice came from the cloud: “This is my Son, whom I love. Listen to him!” — Mark 9:2–7 NIV “This is my Son, whom I love. Listen to him!” vs. 7b 8 Suddenly, when they looked around, they no longer saw anyone with them except Jesus. — Mark 9:8 NIV No one lives on the top of the mountain. It’s fine to go there occasionally -for inspiration, for new perspectives. But you have to come down. Life is lived in the valleys. That’s where the farms and gardens and orchards are, and where the plowing and the work is done. Never short sell an immeasurably more God.Never underestimate the power of a simple prayer offered on behalf of a complex situation.Never dismiss the impact of obedience (disobedience).Never be afraid of the repercussions of telling the truth in love. One of those repercussions is freedom.When in the dark always ask for more of God. You need Him more than answers, advice or direction.Change always requires change.A desire for change is common, actual change is elusive. Spiritual change always has spiritual opposition. Newton's Law of Motion #1 An object at rest will stay at rest, and an object in motion will stay in motion with the same speed and in the same direction, unless acted upon by a net external force. Application: People tend to stay in the same spiritual and physical spot until the pain of staying exceeds the “pain” required in changing. On the positive side, spiritual momentum is also difficult to stop.Newton's Law of Motion #2 The acceleration of an object is directly proportional to the net force acting on it and inversely proportional to its mass. Application: Surrender/Repentance is a powerful force and spiritual change requires it.Fallen man is not simply an imperfect creature who needs improvement: he is a rebel who must lay down his arms. C.S. Lewis.Newton's Law of Motion #3 For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction. Application: We pose the greatest threat to Satan's kingdom when we gain spiritual strength, a spiritual family and spiritual momentum. Salvation is the act of freedom and life. Sotiera & Sozo = Deliverance, rescue, freedom, wholeness. Acts 4:8-13 (NIV) 8 Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them: “Rulers and elders of the people! 9 If we are being called to account today for an act of kindness shown to a man who was lame and are being asked how he was healed, 10 then know this, you and all the people of Israel: It is by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified but whom God raised from the dead, that this man stands before you healed. 11 Jesus is “‘the stone you builders rejected, which has become the cornerstone.'(Psalm 118:22) 12 Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved.”13 When they saw the courage of Peter and John and realized that they were unschooled, ordinary men, they were astonished and they took note that these men had been with Jesus.Salvation being found in no one else other than Jesus, is a non-starter in a relative truth culture. Salvation is the most inclusive offer known to mankind. Salvation has no racial, gender, political, economic or geographic or educational qualifications. BUT salvation has only one gate – Jesus. Sin is a separator, Jesus is a connector. John 3:16 (NIV) 16 For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. Part of Satan's deception around salvation is, you don't deserve this and you will be rejected.Justification is a legal action of setting right. Romans 10:9,10 (NIV) 9 If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved.With our repentance, surrender and confession, we are cleansed (saved) of all of our sins and the sin barrier between us and God is gone – this is a loving fatherly act. God now declares us justified – in right legal standing, penalty of our sin paid, free! This is His Just Judge “side” of God. Love can't exist without challenge. Salvation = Changed Relationship Justification = Changed StatusSanctification is the act of setting apart. The Hebrew root for sanctification means “set apart” and “brightness”. The difference between salvation, justification and sanctification is we play a more integrated role in our sanctification. While God does all three, sanctification is an ongoing process that requires our cooperation and continual surrender. Sanctification is an ongoing process of change. 1 Thessalonians 4:1-8 (NIV) As for other matters, brothers and sisters, we instructed you how to live in order to please God, as in fact you are living. Now we ask you and urge you in the Lord Jesus to do this more and more. 2 For you know what instructions we gave you by the authority of the Lord Jesus. 3 It is God's will that you should be sanctified: that you should avoid sexual immorality; 4 that each of you should learn to control your own body in a way that is holy and honorable, 5 not in passionate lust like the pagans, who do not know God; 6 and that in this matter no one should wrong or take advantage of a brother or sister. The Lord will punish all those who commit such sins, as we told you and warned you before. 7 For God did not call us to be impure, but to live a holy life. 8 Therefore, anyone who rejects this instruction does not reject a human being but God, the very God who gives you his Holy Spirit.“how to live” points to an ongoing process. “more and more” is an ongoing advancement. Romans 7 & 8 deserves a slow readSalvation = Changed Relationship. Justification = Changed Status. Sanctification = Changed LivingRomans 12:1-2 (NIV) Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. 2 Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.The Process of Change…Respond in offering yourself in worship. Offer your whole selfThe more you hold onto yourself, the less you can hold onto God.Stop the conforming. Stopping Starves. Starved things die. Reject cultures attempt to squeeze you into their mold.Start the transforming. The fuel of spiritual transformation is spiritual mind renewal. The Word challenges and changes your thinking. The Truth of God's word is the only force strong enough for transformation. The best case for change is to hear/see and offer testimonies of change. Revelation 12:11(NIV) They triumphed over him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony; they did not love their lives so much as to shrink from death. Let's celebrate some triumphing with some testimony. John 11:43b-44 (NIV) 43 When he had said this, Jesus called in a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out!” 44 The dead man came out, his hands and feet wrapped with strips of linen, and a cloth around his face. Jesus said to them, “Take off the grave clothes and let him go.”To exit death, you have to respond to Jesus' call to life. Once alive, ditch the dead stuff. Undeniable life comes with unavoidable backlash. Life QuestionsIs Jesus calling you out of a grave, today? Come forth!What dead stuff do you need to ditch? Ask for help and participate in stripping off the dead stuff that doesn't match the living God.Don't be afraid to live the life of Christ in dead circles. Everybody needs this life.

God is neither poor or stingy.Paul is asking God to stop the courage drain and build strength in you from the reservoir of His glorious riches. Christ isn't out there, He's in here. Think less link arms with Christ and more live out the power of Christ.Prayer Ask #1: Supernatural Strength & Indwelling Presence. Prayer Ask #2 To Be Filled Up with the Fullness with God. And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, 18 may have power, together with all the Lord's holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, 19 and to know this love that surpasses knowledge—that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God. God's love is wide enough, long enough and deep enough to heal all of our holes and fill up all of our emptiness. The core lies Satan feeds us are God is not enough and/or we are not enough. The Truth is God's love is enough to fill us and make us whole! Our lack isn't a match for His riches! Our holes aren't don't overwhelm His love.To know the love of God is both intellectual grasp and experiential knowledge. The components of the intellectual grasp include the following. Sin creates a gap un-crossable by us. Jesus came down to us because we couldn't get up to Him. We don't have the capacity to pay for our own sin. The penalty of sin is death. Jesus died for us because a perfect sacrifice was necessary to pay the penalty of our sin and to expunge our record of sin. Jesus died but He didn't stay dead. Jesus resurrection ended deaths mastery over us. We can live full in Christ through the power of the Holy SpiritPrayer Ask #1: Supernatural Strength & Indwelling Presence. Prayer Ask #2 To Be Filled with the Fullness with God.“What comes into our minds when we think about God is the most important thing about us.” A.W. Tozer The knowledge of the Holy: The Attributes of God; Their Meaning in the Christian Life. We have to have a supernatural understanding of who God is to have faith for supernatural outcomes – internal or external.V20. Now to Him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, 21 to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen.Why did Paul feel such an encouraging and elaborate description of God was necessary? Because… God isn't just an external force, He is also a present, active and partnering internal force. … “at work within us”. What's in front of you isn't a match for the God inside of you. No challenge is a match for God's capacity. God exceeds our expectations (more than we can think or imagine). Don't settle for less or even ask for more, ask for full.We are not the children of a small, limited, ill-informed God. We pray to an immeasurably more God who wants us to experience more of Him and His love than we do right now and who wants to accomplish more in us and through us than we could ever dream. How does this word impact my world in real time? We can be consumed by a challenge or we can be consumed by God but we can't be consumed by both – you have to pick.
