Navajo Nation President Buu Nygren tried firing that top official. As KJZZ's Gabriel Pietrorazio reports, that dispute is now over. Sean McCabe has been reaffirmed as the sole lawful controller through a legally binding stipulation between him and President Nygren, which also orders Controller McCabe to receive backpay and have his attorney fees covered. Nygren recently apologized for sending profanity-laced texts leaked by McCabe to council delegates. “I used language that I shouldn't have. In moments of great stress we don't always act as our best selves. This was one such occasion for me.” The October exchange preceded his sudden termination. Screenshots show Nygren pressured McCabe to unlock his government-issued purchase card, but McCabe told him there's no budget. (Photo: Sean Gleason) A program that helps boaters in Indigenous coastal communities use buoys to track weather conditions wrapped up another season this fall. Advocates of the Backyard Buoys program say it increased safety for fishermen in Western Alaska – and helped hunters in Alaska's Arctic land whales. The Alaska Desk’s Alena Naiden from our flagship station KNBA has more. Several years ago, seven boaters went missing in the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta region and were never found. The loss motivated residents to find ways to better understand their changing waterways. Nalaquq is an organization that integrates Indigenous knowledge into research in the region. The company joined a nationwide initiative, called the Backyard Buoy project, and deployed three buoys in the area for the first time this year. Lynn Marie Church is Nalaquq's chief executive officer. “We wanted to understand what was going on in our ocean … in our waterways, especially with the changes in the environment that we've seen over the past 10 years.” Backyard Buoys project helps Indigenous coastal communities in Alaska, as well as the Pacific Northwest and Pacific Islands, support maritime activities. Buoys track wave height, temperature, and barometric pressure in real time. Residents can see that information in an app and decide whether it is safe to travel. Church says that using the Backyard Buoys app has been easy. “When you look at where the locations are, it's not by latitude and longitude, it's by place names. That's how we learn in rural Alaska.” Sean Gleason is the head of Research and Development at Nalaquq. “We picked locations where people travel for subsistence or daily travel.” The goal was also to spread out those buoys so communities in different parts of the region can use the data. “There's no one community. Everyone's related.” In Alaska's Arctic, the project has been ramping up as well. The Alaska Eskimo Whaling Commission facilitated the installment of buoys in six communities this year. Martin Edwardsen is the commission's coordinator for the project and is also a whaling co-captain. “I was looking at the app and seeing that the waves weren't too big in the general area where we were headed. So we went out that way and we successfully harvested a whale and brought it back to our community to feed.” The whaling commission is now looking for translators to allow users of the Backyard Buoys app see information in their Native language. And there are few as influential, and overlooked, as Ink & Dagger. Their albums aren't even on Bandcamp, let alone streaming sites. That probably tells you everything you need to know. Frankly, without Ink & Dagger, bands like Thursday, My Chemical Romance and a whole legion of post-hardcore/emo bands from the early 00s simply wouldn't exist. They gained a brief spike in popularity in the 2010s when they reformed with Geoff Rickly from Thursday on vocals, which ensured that their vital legacy got its day in the sun. Ink & Dagger were only active from 1995 to 2000, but were incredibly prolific in that short space of time, producing 4 EPs, 2 splits and 2 albums. Their sound evolved very quickly, and amongst all of that was relentless touring, a revolving door of band members (singer Sean McCabe and guitarist Don Devore remained the only consistent members) and at least a book or two's worth of insane on-the-road hijinks. The band agreed to disband in the year 2000 after their second album. But before they could even release that record, singer Sean McCabe passed away aged 27. A tragic exclamation point at the end of the band's short, crazy existence. If you like post-hardcore in any form but have never heard this band, well... prepare to be educated as, this week, we throw our focus on their debut album "The Fine Art of Original Sin".

Keith sits down with Don Devore to discuss growing up in Philadelphia, early music influences, the recent Frail reunion, their discography reissue, how Don updated his guitar parts for the reunion shows, the band's history and unique ideology and their initial breakup. We also discuss Don's first band with Sean McCabe: Mandela Strikeforce, how this band evolved into Ink & Dagger, the meticulous planning that went into every aspect of the band, the meaning and misunderstandings behind the vampire aesthetic, the making of their debut LP "The Fine Art of Original Sin" and the final Self Titled record, the passing of vocalist Sean McCabe, moving to Los Angeles, joining The Icarus Line on bass and appearing on their 2003 LP "Penance Soiree", collaborating with Kurt Heasley in Lilys, the 2010 Ink & Dagger reunion and more.

Saint Sebastian is a queer coming-of-age musical comedy, set on a Christian retreat farm over one Easter weekend. At the heart of the story is the relationship of Sebastian, a sheltered, naïve kid whose parents own the farm, and Jamie, a housing-insecure kid staying at the farm with his single mother. It's a story about socioeconomic privilege, the awkwardness of adolescence, and queerness in conflict with religious tradition. Tracklist on https://slothboogie.com/ Bristol-based producer Sean McCabe has amassed an impressive discography, delivering inspired releases and reworks for the likes of Local Talk, Z Records, Strictly Rhythm, Room Control, Tribe, Quantize and his own label Good Vibrations Music. Releasing his first tracks in 2003, he has fine-tuned a trademark sound that is effortlessly soulful and definitely house. A quick listen to any of his productions or DJ sets will confirm this emotion-rich aesthetic. Constantly learning and evolving, taking his sound in different directions, McCabe admits to a love of vintage synthesizers – picked up from listening to classic New York boogie and ‘80s soul. "I always like to play a mix of styles in a set to keep it interesting and represent the different styles that I like. I selected about 50 tracks that I felt like playing, to give me options, some recently released and some forthcoming. I made up the structure as I went along based on how I felt in the moment. It starts with a blend of soulful songs and funky/jazzy grooves, then delves into deeper driving tracks to build some anticipation, like a crescendo of some sort, then relieve the tension with music that has a resolving feel to it and end with some broken beat and jazzy ear candy. I think this is typical of how I try to programme my mixes. Like a very long chord progression or song structure; set mood, build tension, resolve, home, then repeat.
