Please Join Chris and Dan as they welcome on Yassine Diboun! Yassine is a runner who currently resides in the Pacific Northwest but has ran all over the world. He finished Hardrock in 2023 and is hype about the San Juans. We cover everything from aid station food to equality in sport during this fun and invigorating conversation about this wonderful event.
“I just decided this is going to be kind of part of my life mission, to try to just be an open book and share my struggles and share the triumph over them, and help people realize that there is life outside of that. That's kind of how we got to be where we are now. I work a lot with people in recovery still to this day. And, just want to keep spreading the word that recovery is possible and we do recover.” - Yassine DibounYassine Diboun was addicted to drinking in his early 20's and the addiction affected himself and everyone around him. Things got quite rough for Diboun but he was eventually able to get himself into rehab and turn the corner. It's not the most direct path into trail and ultra running, but Yassine found peace and solace through running which helped him in recovery. Suddenly Diboun finds himself looking back over 20 years to reminisce about the no-so-good ole days, a challenging past that remains there, through hard work and dedication to his sobriety. He's also become an open book over the years, looking to help people in recovery and show them there is light at the end of the tunnel. It's an inspiring story and a story that filmmaker and good friend of Yassine's, Steven Mortinson, felt a lot of pressure to tell right.“Being a good friend with Yassine, it's incredibly stressful because you've got this big weight. You want to tell it right.vYou don't want to mess it up. And so it was a lot of responsibility on me, I feel like, to just tell It true to Yassine.” - Steven MortinsonSteven nailed it as this film is fantastic, and Yassine agreed. It's a great glimpse into a real struggle from someone who we now know as a completely different person. It offers hope without judgment and I hope you all enjoy the film and this conversation as much as I did. Yassine Diboun is a champion ultrarunner, routinely finishing near the top in some of the world's most demanding and prestigious races. He won and set the course record at the Leona Divide 50K in 2013 and was a member of the silver medal-winning U.S. team at the IAU World Trail Championships in 2015. What people may not know is that he can be found not only running the trails, but manning race aid stations dressed as a cowboy… or an astronaut. As owner of Wy'east Wolfpack in Portland, Oregon, he connects people to the joys of health and wellness through movement. Today he and Tina talk about his journey to becoming a top ultrarunner, connecting to nature, and why he's known for the fun that he brings to volunteering. Yassine Diboun is a professional ultramarathon trail runner, coach and entrepreneur (Wy'east Wolfpack) in Portland, Ore. He's also nearly 17 years sober. In this conversation, we talk about Yassine's story of addiction, which started at a really early age. And we talk about sobriety. Serious topics no doubt. But we have some good laughs along the way too. We also talk about Yassine's transformation from, as he tells it, spiritual bankruptcy to spiritual awakening, and his becoming a pro athlete and a community leader, on the trail and off. Among other things, like diversity in the outdoors and the Japanese concept of shin-rin yoku ("forest bathing"). We discuss training and racing topics with leading sports scientists and how to practically apply research findings for marathoners and ultra runners. Episode 13: Group Training Advantages with Yassine Diboun In this episode we're talking to my good friend, Yassine Diboun. He's a father, husband, co-owner of Wy'east Wolfpack @wyeastwolfpack, coach, Columbia Sportswear athlete, living in Portland, Oregon. He started in triathlon in 2005, and then moved towards longer road runs like marathons. He completed and won, with a course record, his very first ultra marathon in 2007, and hasn't looked back since. He's also a 4 x WS100 finisher, 3x HURT 100 finisher, 1x UTMB finisher and has represented Team USA at the World Trail Championships in 2015. His Wy'east Wolfpack group does personal coaching, group training via fitness classes, and running clinics. He also leads group track workouts for RUN TRG and group trail runs. Another program he created is trail running camps for young people, including minorities, instilling movement and running from an early age. The Wy'east Wolfpack website also has a wide variety of BLM-related links with organizations and people to follow, articles and books to read, and podcasts to listen to. This show is about group training, community and how it helps us become better runners and live fulfilling lives. We discuss: Yassine's work as a coach with the various groups mentioned above; the benefits of different types of group training scenarios for improved fitness, plus for the mental health gains and what we can learn from other runners; how to do epic adventure runs with friends and why they're a great idea; his experience as a BIPOC runner and how sport brings people together, plus what we call all do to help on a daily basis.

“One of the main things too is people just kind of sticking out like a sore thumb. It's so unbalanced that I think people of color sometimes feel uncomfortable going into this sport that is just predominantly white. I've never really let it be any sort of limiting factor for me and I know there a lot of people of color that still feel that trail runners and runners in general that these are my tribe of people, it's so welcoming. I don't feel racism in our sport. That doesn't mean it's not lacking racial and ethnic diversity but I think the more that we start to see that diversity, the more people will say, ‘Oh, they're doing it, I can do that too.' It's the same thing with recovery, it's when people start seeing other people do it, “Oh if they did it, then I can do it.” And so that's kind of why I wanted to be more open about my recovery but also I wanted to be more open about this topic too, is to inspire people—like no, you're welcome here.” This week, I had a great conversation with ultrarunner Yassine Diboun. Yassine is a super accomplished athlete. He's finished in the top-10 at Western States, has represented the U.S. internationally at world championships, and he's been super competitive across a wide range of distances. He's also one of the nicest guys you'll ever meet. Yassine's got an incredible story about how he changed his life and I'm excited for him to share it here with you in this episode. We also talk about the relationship between confidence and consistency, his longevity as an athlete, and how to keep the fire burning. Yassine also told me about experiencing racism throughout his life, the systemic barriers that prevent people from participating in the sport of ultrarunning and what needs to change, creating more opportunities for kids of color to get outside and experience nature, and a lot more. As we discussed in our recent podcast with Yassine Diboun, the ultrarunning community is generally a very welcoming one—but one in which diversity still continues to lag. While the sport strives for inclusivity, only about a third of ultrarunners are female. We we very happy to be joined in the Pain Cave by elite ultrarunner Aliza Lapierre, who called in from the Northeast Kingdom to discuss the gender gap in ultraunning and steps that we can take to open the sport up to more female athletes. In the midst of the ongoing protests against police brutality and systemic inequality, the great Yassine Diboun stops into the Pain Cave to discuss his experience as a minority athlete in an overwhelmingly white majority sport. One of the most accomplished ultrarunners in the US, Yassine brings us his unique perspective on growing up as the target of racism, how that contributed to his struggles with addiction, barriers to minority participation in trail running, and what we can do to help build a more tolerant and equitable community.LinksYassine's recent article in Trail Runner magazineWy'east Wolfpack and youth trail running campIf you'd like to donate to help sponsor a scholarship for a camper, contact hereDesert Island Picks: The Big Book, Live From Mars by Ben Harper and the Innocent Criminals, Brew Dr. Kombucha Circulatory BlendIntro music: "Fine Line" by the BloodlettersOutro music: "When I Was Still Young" by Yard Sale
Hear beloved coach/ultra runner/and community leader Yassine Diboun talk with good friend and Wy'east Wolfpack business partner (and Get After It PDX host) Willie McBride about the topic of change, both societal and inter-personal, and our human capacity to do so in regards to things like racism and addiction. Yassine shares the story of his journey with substance abuse (and racism) and the first-hand experience of achieving life-altering personal change for the better, while acknowledging that he still--like everyone--takes life's challenges "one day at a time."
