Why create sympathetic villains like Killmonger and Gorr, the god butcher? 35:37 Thanos is a much more complex villain than we give him credit for. 39:59 Captain America: Civil War fought the battle of postmodern skepticism and neomodern narrative assurance: am I way off base here? 44:21 What role does Julia Kristeva play in your understanding of the MCU? 48:10 How do Iron Man 3, Thor: The Dark World, and Captain America: The Winter Soldier teach us about purity/impurity? 52:16 I made my case for why I think Thor:Ragnarok was terrible. My guest is much better at discussing it. 56:08 How does Gilgamesh's exploration of mortality connect with the MCU? 1:03:04 Are Marvel films and shows becoming too geared toward an older audience and closed off to younger people? 1:04:36 What did you learn from your family when you all re-watched the Marvel films together again? 1:06:50 My closing thoughts: the love and the thunder // WEBSITE // Head over to the website to learn more about me and to contact me. https://theneutralgroundpodcast.com/ // EPISODE SUGGESTIONS // 1. Received praise from critics, especially for Downey's performance. It was selected by the American Film Institute as one of the ten best films of 2008 and received two nominations at the 81st Academy Awards for Best Sound Editing and Best Visual Effects. This is film one of phase one of the marvel cinematic universe, that has since spawned 26 films, with 12 more currently in production. It is the highest-grossing film franchise of all time, having grossed over $23.5 billion at the global box office. This includes Avengers: Endgame, which became the highest-grossing film of all time upon release. First time you saw the movie? Plot:The film opens with Tony Stark, who has inherited Stark Industries from his late father Howard Stark, in war-torn Afghanistan with his friend and military liaison, Lieutenant colonel James "Rhody" Rhodes, to demonstrate the new "Jericho" missile. After the demonstration, the convoy, and Starks fun-vee, not Rhodys hum-drum-vee, is ambushed and Stark is critically wounded by a missile used by the attackers: one of his company's own. He is captured and imprisoned in a cave by a terrorist group called the Ten Rings. A fellow captive and doctor named Yinsen, implants an electromagnet into Stark's chest to keep the shrapnel shards that wounded him from reaching his heart and killing him... Chris, does your implant even do anything like that to keep you alive? Ten Rings leader Raza offers Stark freedom in exchange for building a Jericho missile for the group, but he and Yinsen know that Raza will not keep his word. S:-The music for this movie is PERFECTION.-RDJ, with all of his life issues, was born to play Tony Stark. Stark and Yinsen bond, and secretly build a small, powerful electric generator called an arc reactor to power Stark's electromagnet and a prototype suit of powered armor to aid in their escape. Although they keep the suit hidden almost to completion, the Ten Rings discover their hostages' intentions and attack the workshop like Trey attacks a whole fucking pint of ice cream. Like Treys stomach, Yinsen sacrifices himself to divert the terrorists while the suit powers up. The armored Stark battles his way out of the cave (like the ice cream does to Treys stomach) to find the dying Yinsen, then burns the Ten Rings' weapons in anger and flies away, crashing in the desert and destroying the suit. After being rescued by Rhody, Stark returns home and announces that his company will cease manufacturing weapons. Obadiah Stane, his father's old partner and the company's manager, advises Stark that this may ruin Stark Industries and his father's legacy and urges him to reconsider. In his home workshop, Stark builds a sleeker, more powerful version of his improvised armor suit as well as a more powerful arc reactor for it and his chest. Personal assistant Pepper Potts places the original reactor inside a small glass showcase. Though Stane requests details of the Mk2, a suspicious Stark decides to keep his work to himself. S:-I love the use of all the practical effects. They built a REAL suit, and the mk1 suit was real, too. This is before all the computer animation that makes up most of the movies today, like Shang-Chi (which I watched last night). At a charity event held by Stark Industries, reporter Christine Everhart (the woman from the opening of Trick r Treat) informs Stark that his company's weapons were recently delivered to the Ten Rings and are being used to attack Yinsen's home village, Gulmira. Stark dons his new armor and flies to Afghanistan, where he saves the villagers, and leaves one of the generals to the citizens of the village. Also, one of the BEST visuals, when the tank shoots at him, and he fires a tiny rocket, and walks away when it blows up. While flying home, Stark is attacked by two F-22 Raptors. He reveals his secret identity to Rhodes over the phone in an attempt to end the attack. Meanwhile, the Ten Rings gather the pieces of Stark's prototype suit and meet with Stane, who has been trafficking arms to the Ten Rings and has staged a coup to replace Stark as Stark Industries' CEO by hiring the Ten Rings to kill him. He subdues Raza and has the rest of the group killed. Stane has a massive new suit reverse engineered from the wreckage. Seeking to track his company's illegal shipments, Stark sends Potts to hack into its database. She discovers that Stane hired the Ten Rings to kill Stark, quicker than Tucker could uncover the identity of the famed Opelika Butthole Tickler, who was sneaking into peoples houses, and tickling their buttholes... but the group reneged when they realized they had a direct route to Stark's weapons. Potts meets with Agent Phil Coulson of S.H.I.E.L.D., an intelligence agency, to inform him of Stane's activities. S:-Its a classic, and somewhat tropy move to have the partner and manager be the bad guy all along...but it works so well, and Jeff Bridges does it so well. Stane's scientists cannot duplicate Stark's miniaturized arc reactor, so Stane ambushes Stark at his home and steals the one from his chest. Stark manages to get to his original reactor to replace it before dying. Potts and several S.H.I.E.L.D. agents attempt to arrest Stane, but he dons his suit and attacks them. Stark fights Stane but is outmatched without his new reactor to run his suit at full capacity. The fight carries Stark and Stane to the top of the Stark Industries building, and Stark instructs Potts to overload the large arc reactor powering the building. This unleashes a massive electrical surge that causes Stane and his armor to fall into the exploding reactor, killing him. The next day, at a press conference, Stark publicly admits to being the superhero the press has dubbed "Iron Man". In a post-credits scene, S.H.I.E.L.D. Director Nick Fury visits Stark at home, telling him that Iron Man is not "the only superhero in the world", and explaining that he wants to discuss the "Avenger Initiative". S:-My biggest complaint is the end fight was good, but kinda sucks that we've seen this whole movie building the different suits, prototypes, tests, etc... and then we don't even get to see the fight at full capacity. We don't get to see what the suit can really do. Potts has to help him win. Top Five Trivia of the movie: 5: Rhodys ringtone is the 1966 Iron Man cartoon theme music4:One of the cars in Tony Stark's garage, is a Tesla Roadster, which had not yet been released during the film's production.3: Rock guitarist Tom Morello assisted Ramin Djawadi in composing the film's soundtrack. Morello had a cameo in the film as a security guard who gets killed by the Iron Monger2: This is the last film special effects expert Stan Winston completed before his death.1: The line, "I am Iron Man" was ad-libbed by Robert Downey Jr.. Producer Kevin Feige approved using it in the final cut of the film, and credits this with his decision to largely do away with secret identities in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In this episode:Mike and Ed discuss the “un-pardoning” of the Hulk; how to use super-powered individuals as checks on other super-powered individuals; decentralization; how the Fantastic Four is financed; and the risk the Soviet Union poses to our scientists and industrialists (including a missing Tony Stark). Also, why can't the military tell the difference between the Thing and the Hulk?In these issues:Fantastic Four #12The military, while marching through New York City (what???), bump into the Thing, mistake him for the Hulk (again, what???), and try to capture him. They realize their error, and the Thing goes home to the Baxter Building where he breaks some things and sulks. General Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross then stops by and asks the Fantastic Four to help him find the Hulk, as he has apparently destroyed a military cannon. The team agree, and they head to Ross's military base with him. While there, they consult with Dr. Bruce Banner, who tries to convince Ross that the Hulk did not damage the cannon. The Four leave on their mission. Meanwhile, Rick Jones goes sifts through the wallet of Banner's assistant Karl Kort and finds a membership card in a “subversive communist-front organization”. Kort appears over his shoulder, basically admits that he was the saboteur, “the Wrecker”, and pulls a gun on Jones. Kort then sends a note addressed to the Hulk, which Banner finds, telling him to drive the Fantastic Four away or he will never see Jones again. Banner turns into the Hulk and gets into a fight with the Four. He is defeated, but only because Kort shot the Hulk with a ray gun. The Four then take Kort down and are given an honor guard by the military.Tales of Suspense #39Tony Stark, a world famous inventor and playboy, demonstrates his latest invention to the military - tiny transistors that can increase the force of any device a thousandfold. He is then captured in Vietnam and injured. His captors demand that he invent a powerful new weapon for him before he will allow his surgeon to save his life. Stark agrees and, working with the world's greatest physicist Dr. Yinsen (who is also a prisoner), he invents a suit of armor which saves his life. Yinsen sacrifices his life for Stark, who then escapes while using his new “Iron Man” exoskeleton. Assumed before the next episode:People are wondering why American scientists keep getting kidnapped. This episode takes place:After the Hulk has dropped down the super-celebrity rankings, and people have breached a sigh of relief when Tony Stark returns to America safe and sound. The Mailbag follow-up: Dhaval Panchal writes in, “The problem with the bad accent in movies is that it pulls you out and makes you realise that how the makers are lazy. Whereas when done right, it brings the authenticity to the work and a lot of respect for the makers. The best example of Hindi accent done right! 1. The Hindi/Urdu used in the video, prepared by Ten rings terrorist declaring the kidnapping of Tony Stark, by Faran Tahir appears as Raza. Also, the Hindi/Urdu spoken by Stark's fellow captive, (Shaun Toub as Yinsen) is understandably an accent spoken by someone who is not fully proficient and still learning. Worst example of Hindi language in films is a scene in movie - 1. Avengers (Scene where Black Widow searches for Dr Banner, and a little girl approaches Dr Banner and talks in a bad accent) 2. The Russell Peters TV show on Netflix - Indian Detective, the lead actress has the worst accent of Hindi. (Alas, Russell Peters is of Indian descent)” Anders Reff from Oslo, Norway writes in, “Hollywood has portrayed the scandinavian and especially norwegian accent terribly wrong for many decades. By that i mean the accent we have while talking english. I understand why it ends up like that. They cant use resources on nailing that accent correct I mean, who cares, besides from us here up in the cold north. It is especially annoying because the actual norwegian accent is quite funny and naive. The hollywood version: way over the top and everybody sounds like nutcases. Wrong accent: norwegians visiting in a simpsons-episode Right accent: thorbjorn jagland revealing obama as peace prize winner ( jeezes, did that really happen?)” And Eddie from Philadelphia writes in to say “I just listened to the February 14 episode of Slash Film Daily where you discussed "Den of Thieves 2". I was one of the few people who did go see the movie (using my MoviePass), and I found it to be a pretty enjoyable action/heist movie. The ending to the film set up a sequel quite nicely so it doesn't surprise me that they're greenlighting a sequel.
