"The Number Of The Beast" von Iron Maiden ist eines DER Alben der "New Wave of British Heavy Metal". Wir haben mit Metalfan und Journalist Christof Leim über die Platte gesprochen. Mit ihrem Album "The Number Of The Beast" haben die Heavy Metal Legenden und ihr Maskottchen "Eddie" 1982 den großen Durchbruch in der noch jungen Metalszene geschafft. Kein Wunder, denn schließlich sind mit "The Number Of The Beast" und "Run To The Hills" auch zwei der größten Hits der Band mit auf dem Album. Mit "The Number Of The Beast" begann für Iron Maiden sowas wie eine neue Zeitrechnung. Es war nicht nur die erste Platte, die der Band internationale Bekanntheit beschert hat, sondern es war auch das erste Album mit dem neuen Sänger Bruce Dickinson. Grundsätzlich ist das Album "Number Of The Beast" eine (meist) wirklich temporeiche Platte, vorwiegend wenn man die Gitarrenarbeit von Adrian Smith und Dave Murray betrachtet. Das trifft natürlich auch auf zwei der bekanntesten Songs des Albums zu, den Titelsong "The Number Of The Beast" und "Run To The Hills", bei Letzterem ist vor allem der – für den Heavy Metal typische – galoppierende Gitarrenrhythmus ikonisch. Und auch wenn Refrains wie beim Song "Run To The Hills" hier und da fast schon fröhlich klingen, sind die Themen auf "The Number Of The Beast" – der Titel lässt es erahnen – meist eher düsterer Natur. Zwischen Vertreibung, Verbrennungen und Todeszelle bewegen sich die Geschichten in Songs wie "Run To The Hills", "Children Of The Damned" oder "Hallowed Be Thy Name". Inspirieren lassen hat sich Hauptsongwriter Steve Harris oft von Träumen, aber auch von Filmen oder TV-Serien, wie zum Beispiel beim Song "The Prisoner". Bei einigen Songs auf dem Album, wie zum Beispiel bei "Run To The Hills" hatte aber auch schon der neue Sänger Bruce Dickinson mitgeschrieben, allerdings nur im Geheimen, denn vertraglich war er noch an seine alte Band "Samson" gebunden. Iron Maiden sind mit legendären Songs wie "Run To The Hills", "Number Of The Beast" und anderen von diesem Album für viele spätere Metalmusiker, wie zum Beispiel auch Metallica, ein riesengroßer Einfluss gewesen. Herzlich willkommen zur Episode 37 der Blechgedanken! Diese Folge habe ich diesmal mit Christoph ”Paul“ Batton aufgenommen. Das Ganze wurde ein bisschen durch mein vorheriges Gespräch mit Markus angestoßen, in dem das Thema Rollerjungs als Buch aufgekommen ist.Ich hatte das sowieso schon länger auf dem Zettel und dachte: Lass doch mal ganz kurz mit Paul sprechen und schauen, ob er Bock hat. Und Paul hatte auf jeden Fall Bock – und so haben wir über viele verschiedene Themen gesprochen: Wie er zum Rollerfahren gekommen ist, wie er mit 17 in England die Jugendkultur kennengelernt hat, wie es für ihn zurück in Gelsenkirchen mit den Scooterboys weiterging, welchen Einfluss die Musikszene – vor allem Ska – auf ihn hatte, wie die ersten Runs abliefen und wie die Konzerte damals waren. Wir haben außerdem darüber gesprochen, warum er nach vielen Jahren auf zwei Rädern irgendwann nur noch Gespann fährt. Das hat mit einer ziemlich unschönen Verletzung beim Rollerfahren zu tun – und seitdem ist das Gespann fahren sein Ding. Mehr dazu im Podcast!Ein großer Teil des Gesprächs drehte sich natürlich auch um das Buch – vor allem darum, wie und warum es überhaupt entstanden ist. Man muss wissen: Paul hat schon früh angefangen, nach den ersten Runs eines der wichtigen Fanzines mit aufzubauen. Aus dieser Szene und dem Schreiben heraus entstand – nicht direkt, aber indirekt – auch seine langjährige freie Mitarbeit bei der Motoretta, für die er viele Artikel geschrieben hat.Ich habe das Rollerjungs-Buch letztes Jahr von Paul geschickt bekommen und in England gelesen – und dadurch einen viel besseren Einblick in die Szene bekommen. Auch wenn es natürlich nur ein bestimmter Blick auf die Szene ist – aber mir hat er sehr geholfen. Zumal ich ja, wie ich immer sage, in der Zeit selbst noch nicht Roller gefahren bin. Klar, ich war Teil einer diversen Jugendkultur, aber ich war nicht auf Runs unterwegs.Wir sehen uns auf der Straße – die Saison rückt näher. Despite the advancements in marine processing and pre-stack depth migration, land seismic methods have yet to see comparable progress. He emphasizes the need for more attention and funding in this area, highlighting how crucial it is for improving seismic data quality. Christof also illuminates the concept of "poor coupling," a term that describes the disconnect between surface geophones and the wave field at greater depths. He argues that understanding the physics behind poor coupling can lead to better signal extraction and improved seismic data quality. One key takeaway from Christof's discussion is the importance of combining theoretical and practical approaches to tackle land seismic noise. He explains that while traditional methods rely heavily on statistical noise removal, this is limited in effectiveness. Instead, Christof advocates for a focus on coherent noise removal, which can significantly enhance the effectiveness of statistical methods and reduce the need for excessive data collection. Christof's passion for land seismic research is evident as he calls for more investment in R&D from both the industry and academic communities. He stresses the potential benefits of dedicating a small percentage of acquisition budgets to research and creative experimentation, which could lead to significant advancements in seismic imaging.
