Christof Koch is a neuroscientist at the Allen Institute for Brain Science and the Chief Scientist of the Tiny Blue Dot Foundation. As a professor for 25 years at Cal Tech, he pioneered research on the neural basis of consciousness, and he has advanced one of the leading theories of consciousness called Integrated Information Theory. Among his many publications, Christof's most recent book is entitled Then I Am Myself the World: What Consciousness Is and How to Expand It. Weigold gewann damit den Preis des Mordsharz-Festivals für das beste deutschsprachige Debüt und war für den Glauser-Preis nominiert. Een ervaren rot, jong geweld en een outsider uit de bedrijfswereld. Het trio dat elkaar bekampt voor de groene scepter is op z'n minst interessant te noemen. Groen wil omhoog (in de cijfers), maar zal dat naar links of naar rechts zijn? En welke werf moet de nieuwe voorzitter eerst aanpakken? Op 28 maart weten we wie de nieuwe voorzitter van Groen wordt. De verkiezing wordt het orgelpunt van een wekenlang open debat over de koers van de partij. Het belooft een boeiende strijd te worden tussen parlementsleden Bogdan Vanden Berghe uit Antwerpen en de jonge Aimen Horch uit Vilvoorde, en als derde gemeenteraadslid Valérie Tanghe uit Huldenberg, die uit de bedrijfswereld komt. Omdat de drie kandidaten een heel verschillend profiel hebben, wordt het een ideologische strijd. “Tanghe heeft een apart verhaal”, weet collega Christof Vanschoubroek. “Zij vindt dat 80 procent van de acties voor het klimaat van de economie moet komen, en mikt eerder op het veroveren van de centrumkiezer. Horch daarentegen, gaat voluit voor het beconcurreren van de uiterst linkse PVDA.” Vanden Berghe brengt een links-progressief verhaal van samenwerking. Dat hij geen straatvechter is, kan een voor- of nadeel zijn. Groen heeft intussen door dat er nood is aan boegbeelden én een coherent verhaal. Dat moet zonder twijfel inhouden dat de partij ook (nog) voluit voor het klimaat gaat, vindt Christof. “Dat ze dat niet eens durven zeggen, maakt de malaise alleen maar groter.” Want ja: sinds de “overwinningsnederlaag” in 2019 is de partij helemaal weggedeemsterd. Niet alles is de fout van Groen zelf: bijna overal in Europa hebben de groenen het moeilijk – kijk naar Duitsland, Nederland of Frankrijk. Eén van de lichtpuntjes is de rijzende groene ster in het Verenigd Koninkrijk: Zack Polanski. Een charismatische ex-acteur die een eco-populistisch verhaal brengt. Vooral Horch lijkt er flink inspiratie te hebben getankt. Zien we straks een Vlaamse Polanski-variant? A physicist and neurobiologist, he was for more than a quarter of a century a professor of biology and engineering at the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena. In 2011, he became the Chief Scientist at the Allen Institute for Brain Science in Seattle and in 2015, its president; now a Meritorious Investigator. He is also the Chief Scientist of the Tiny Blue Dot Foundation in Santa Monica, seeking to understand consciousness, its place in nature, and how this knowledge can benefit all of humanity. Christof is joining me to talk about his new book, Performing State Boundaries: Food Networks, Democratic Bureaucracy and China published in Open Access by Berghahn Books in 2024. The book delves into intricate political processes in an eco-village in Sichuan, revealing the multiple ways in which the boundary between state and non-state is performed. It shows how, in these performances, competing images of the Chinese state's authoritarian, socialist and cultural otherness are mobilized to shape social policy and the transition to ecological agriculture in unexpected ways.
