Episode 52 - Murdock and Marvel: 2000 Part 2 The new millenium started with some big endings, and comic book sales kept slipping this year. But 2000 featured some big developments that would point the way to the future of comics. Welcome to the Oughts, everyone! This is part 2 of the podcast. that will feature the year in Daredevil, the Spotlight story and the Takeaway for 2000. The Year in Daredevil Appearances: Daredevil #10-13, Earth X #10-12 and X, Fantastic Four #27, Avenger #27, Essential Fantastic Four #3, Marvel Knights #5-6, Daredevil: Ninja #1, Maximum Security #1, and Nick Fury: Agent of Shield graphic novel. Writing: David Mack (#10 – 11 and 13), Quesada and Palmiotti (12) Pencils: Joe Quesada (#10 – 11 and 13), Rob Haynes (12) Inks: Jimmy Palmiotti (#10 – 11), Rob Haynes (12), Mike Morales (13) A very light year for Daredevil as the main run only released four books this year – all part of the Parts of a Hole storyline started in December 1999. The story would continue until March 2001 when Parts of a Hole conclusion called Vision would reach stores. Visions will be our spotlight for this week. Issue 12, Gun Play, feels like a fill-in story covering a series of vignettes about Hell's Kitchen residents (featuring some very adult themes) while Echo and Daredevil fight rooftop-to-rooftop that was written by Joe Quesada and Jimmy Palmiotti, with art by Rob Haynes. Although it was well written, it does stall the pacing of the story for an issue. Outside of the main title, many of the Daredevil appearances this year were reprints including the Daredevil Visionaries: Frank Miller collection that was released in October which included 10 stories from the Frank Miller era and a second printing of the Punisher kills the Marvel Universe graphic novel. One other original story was started in December and spilled over into 2001 - Daredevil: Ninja which was a limited series written by Brian Michael Bendis and Rob Hayes that saw Daredevil dealing with the Hand and reuniting with Stone in Japan. When the scene shifts back to New York, Baby Karen (From Daredevil Vol.2 #1-8) turns out to be the next great hero of Japan. This Week's Spotlight: Daredevil volume 2 #15 March 2001 “Parts of a Hole Conclusion: Vision” Recap Why We Picked This Story Daredevil Rapid Fire Questions The Takeaway A lot of great work can get done when expectations are low and no one is watching. We're back with a look at everyone's favorite gruff, eyepatch-wearing super-spy (non-Samuel L. Jackson division) as seen in 1968's Nick Fury, Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. #1, 2, 3 and 5, published by Marvel Comics! Writer and artist Jim Steranko injects a dose of modern psychedelic and pop-art imagery and a strong sense of design into these four issues, creating a surreal visual experience the influence of which is still being felt in comics pages today. The stories those images tell, on the other hand ... Can this tough-talking, shirt-shucking, gun-toting fireball of a secret agent stop a mad scientist from destroying the world, solve a ghostly mystery on the Scottish moors and uncover the identity his mysterious nemesis Scorpio? Once again, we go back to the Marvel age of comics, a swingin' time when the cold war was hot and spies were everywhere...even Marvel Comics! We look at the comics Strange Tales #166 & 167 and Nick Fury, Agent Of SHIELD #1-3, & 5.Nick Fury, once the leader of a group of commandos during World War II, had been refashioned as a 1960s spy as the leader of an organization named S.H.I.E.L.D. Shepherding this change was a young writer / artist named Jim Steranko, who not only took the character into the modern day '60s, but updated the art style as well. The original Nick Fury wasn't psychedelic, but the art style certainly was and we had fun discussing Marvel's foray into cold war adventures that, while of their time, are a fun romp through the tropes of late '60s storytelling. And while this is serious stuff, it's a lot of fun as well. As comics should be.Hosted by Brad Page and Chris Karam.

In the cinematic masterpiece of pure brilliance, Nick Fury: Agent of Shield (1998), we're graced with the presence of David Hasselhoff as the iconic Marvel character. Hoff takes on the role of the gruff and stoic Nick Fury, an agent with an eyepatch and an uncanny ability to deliver lines with the utmost seriousness (or was that unintentional hilarity?). Joined by a leather-clad Lisa Rinna, Fury must protect New York from the diabolical villain, the wonderfully over-the-top Sandra Hess as Viper, and her army of underwhelming henchmen. Will our hero overcome the obstacles, or will he succumb to the power of his own questionable acting choices? Join us as walk you through all of the cringe-worthy dialogue, laughable special effects, and the sheer absurdity of Hasselhoff attempting to be a superhero. Nick Fury: Agent of Shield - because sometimes, even a superhero needs a little "Hoff" to save the day.Bad Movies Rule is a movie podcast about the movies you love even if no one else does. You can support Bad Movies Rule on Patreon here. You can join our community on Facebook and TikTok.You can email the show any movie-related questions for our mailbag episodes here.

On this episode we discuss the 1960s psychedelic spy extravaganza Nick Fury Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. written and drawn by Jim Steranko. Time Codes: 00:00:24 - Introduction 00:02:28 - Setup of interview 00:03:47 - Interview with Mark Voger 01:05:43 - Wrap up 01:07:15 - Contact us On this interview episode, Derek talks with Mark Voger about his latest work, Groovy: When Flower Power Bloomed in Pop Culture. The book comes out this week from TwoMorrows Publishing, and during their conversation Mark discusses the roots of groovy culture that reach back to early twentieth-century modernism and jazz, and are even apparent in discoveries during nineteenth century. But most of the interview is spent talking about the flowering, so to speak, of this cultural trend from the mid-1960s into the early 1970s. Obviously Derek asks Mark about the comics of the time -- Mike Sekowsky's new Wonder Woman, Steve Ditko's Hawk and Dove, Jim Steranko's Nick Fury: Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D., Archie Comics' Josie, and the underground comix of R. Crumb, Trina Robbins, Jay Lynch, Kim Deitch, and Denis Kitchen -- but they also spend a lot of time discussing "groovy culture" in music, television, film, fashion, and art. Mark also briefly covers his previous book, Monster Mash: The Creepy, Kooky Monster Craze In America 1957-1972, and the creative transition he made from the ghoulish to the psychedelic. These were the concurrent popular movements that largely defined his young life. Be sure to visit Mark Voger's website to learn more about his groovy work!
