There is no neutral ground in leadership with God. Welcome to the Daily Devo. I am Vince Miller. This week, we are in 1 Samuel 16. I've titled this chapter "God's Criteria for Choosing Leaders." Here's the context for this moment. Samuel has gone to Bethelem for what looks like a sacrifice of atonement, but it's a sacrifice of anointment. Here, he is going to anoint David, king of Israel. The town has prepared for the sacrifice, and Jesse has seven sons whom God has not chosen. We realize the youngest of his boys, David, was out tending the sheep and was absent. David, the youngest and left out child, now enters the ceremony. All eyes are locked on him, and this happens: And the Lord said, "Arise, anoint him, for this is he." Then Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the midst of his brothers. And the Spirit of the Lord rushed upon David from that day forward. And Samuel rose up and went to Ramah. Now the Spirit of the Lord departed from Saul, and a harmful spirit from the Lord tormented him. And Saul's servants said to him, "Behold now, a harmful spirit from God is tormenting you.  — 1 Samuel 16:13-15 There are two important observations in this text. First, the rushing of the Spirit. The Spirit rushes onto David and noticeably off of Saul. This appears to happen instantaneously, meaning that the events coincide, which would be appropriate. This is the passing of the divine anointing from one king to the next, as Samuel predicted. God's people, authority, and blessing would pass to the next man. I have mentioned this before, but the anointing of the Spirit was different in the Old Testament than today. In the Old Testament, the Spirit fell on certain men at certain times, but after Jesus's ascension, the Spirit lives in us. The difference is on versus in, and the reason for this is that the anointing of Jesus is permanent and done by a perfect prophet, priest, and king. Here are a couple of texts that emphasize this: And it is God who establishes us with you in Christ, and has anointed us. — 2 Corinthians 1:21 But you have been anointed by the Holy One, and you all have knowledge. — 1 John 2:20 But the anointing that you received from him abides in you, and you have no need that anyone should teach you. But as his anointing teaches you about everything, and is true, and is no lie—just as it has taught you, abide in him. — 1 John 2:27 A second observation is that the Spirit not only rushes off Saul, but a harmful spirit torments him. This can appear disturbing for two reasons: first, it's tormenting him, and second, it reads like God is doing the tormenting. But let's remember that Saul was in this situation because he was deliberately disobedient, which means that the torment directly resulted from Saul's wicked choices. The observers had no problem seeing God's sovereign hand in this situation. This is not to infer that God made Saul do it, but that he gave Saul the option to obey or disobey. The blessing of being God's anointed and the consequences of not was up to Saul, but whatever his choice in the end, God was never surprised by the result and still in complete control of the outcome. There is no "neutrality" when it comes to God. I think even believers get this wrong. We believe that there are neutral positions tucked into God's commands. When action is required, we convince ourselves inaction is permitted. But inaction is just apathetic disobedience disguised by our inclinations for indifference. We believe our indifference and passivity are neutral, but they're not. The options are to obey God or obey the Devil. You submit to the Spirit of God, or you submit to the Spirit of the Devil. One brings truth, and the other brings torment. Throughout the Bible, God demands that his followers and leaders make a choice. The choice is definitive. You are either with Christ or against Christ (Matt. 12:30); you are either hot or cold (Rev. 3:15-16); otherwise, you are spat out of his mouth. #LeadershipByGod, #DivineAnointing, #ObeyOrDisobey

For New Orleans-based film composer Sultana Isham, plunging into research on her subject matter is as important as creating her score. Trained as a classical violinist, she moved from her native Virginia to New Orleans to steep herself in one of her passions, the peoples, history and culture of Créolité throughout the Americas and abroad. Once in New Orleans, Sultana Initially busked in various venues around New Orleans and then started playing with Les Cenelles, an ensemble devoted to Creole folk music and work by composers of color. She began to write her own pieces, and in 2017 she put out her first EP, “Blood Moon,” a mixture of avant-garde classical and pop fusion, attracting the attention of director Zandashé Brown, who hired her to write the score for the horror short “Blood Runs Down.” Other directors soon came knocking on her door.Director Angela Tucker hired her to be both researcher and composer on the documentary, “All Skinfolk Ain't Kinfolk,” a PBS documentary about a historic New Orleans mayoral race between two Black women. Among Sultana's other credits are “The Neutral Ground,” which also aired on PBS and received an Emmy nomination for best historical documentary, and the PBS series “Making Black America,” narrated by Dr. Henry Louis Gates, Jr.Sultana's scholarship continues unabated. LSU Press is developing an essay she co-wrote with Dr. Denise Frazier – “Mémwa Nwa: Agency, Sound and Women in AfroCreole Louisiana Folk Music” – into a book. A month before this interview, she concluded her residency at Ace Hotel New Orleans by co-curating an exhibit titled “Them Handy Sisters,” celebrating the careers of noted performers and musicologists Dr. Geneva Handy Southall and D. Antoinette Handy. Here, Sultana explains how she developed her musical skills hand-in-hand with her research practice and why heeding her heart and feeding her curiosity continue to open incredible new doors for her.https://www.sultanaisham.com/

He's primarily been working as a caterer for the past seven years, but his success is leading him to pursue his vision for a restaurant that serves food from his roots, combining African and Creole flavors. When I look at investment crowdfunding, I focus on three flavors of impact: local or community-based businesses, social entrepreneurs and diverse founders. I love opportunities to consider investments in one business that represents all three. I think of these as impact trifectas.Obviously, a local restaurant is the epitome of a community-oriented investment. As an African American, he is also a diverse founder. Kenyatta explained his social mission:I want to be able to lift as I climb. It's really important to me to do that for anybody, but in particular underserved communities. One of those is local high school culinary arts programs that I try to support through my four-courses initiative, where we have celebrity chefs of color come to Chattanooga. We put on a four-course meal for people to dine with us and to also just talk about different subject matter and bring awareness to culinary arts and also allow the young people from those programs to come and rub elbows and participate in the event so they can see the options and opportunities that might present themselves that they may not have thought about. With that social mission, he brings the third part of that impact trifecta.Kenyatta shared his request for support for his Wefunder campaign:Restaurants are expensive, and capital is very hard to raise. Any business venture is expensive to begin, because you're starting from nothing most times. We have a goal of raising $450,000 as capital to help us open our own brick-and-mortar restaurant. trying to be wise and looking for places to open our brick-and-mortar, but also want to bring attention to what we're doing with our campaign and make people aware that our business is worthy of the investment that we're asking you to put into it.We're more than just a restaurant. We want to be a really integral part of the community and not just reap the benefit of doing business with the community but also to pour back into the community.Pouring back into the community is the thesis for local investing. Having Kenyatta open a restaurant that keeps profits in the community rather than having a national chain open one where profits are pulled out of the local economy is a big difference. In his past successes, Kenyatta has demonstrated his superpower: grit.AI Episode Summary* Chef Kenyatta Ashford is launching his first brick-and-mortar restaurant in Chattanooga, Tennessee, called Neutral Ground.* The restaurant concept was born during the pandemic as Chef Kenyatta was furloughed from his previous job and used the opportunity to pursue his dream of owning his own restaurant.* The restaurant is influenced by Chef Kenyatta's upbringing in New Orleans and his African and Creole culture.* Neutral Ground recently collaborated with a local family-run farm called Sequatchie Cove to host a dinner event showcasing their high-quality products, like grass-fed ribeye and lamb meat lollipops.* Chef Kenyatta's vision for the restaurant goes beyond just serving food and aims to become an integral part of the community, supporting local culinary arts programs and offering opportunities for underserved youth.* Neutral Ground is currently raising $450,000 through a crowdfunding campaign on Wefunder to open their own brick-and-mortar restaurant.* This investment represents a trifecta opportunity for impact investors as it supports a local business, social mission, and a diverse founder.* Chef Kenyatta's superpower is his grit and persistence, which has helped him overcome challenges and reach his current level of success.* He advises others to live in the present, stay focused, and take one step at a time to strengthen their mental resilience.* To learn more about Neutral Ground and Chef Kenyatta Ashford, visit their Instagram and Facebook pages, and consider investing in their Wefunder campaign to support their vision and mission. How to Develop Grit As a SuperpowerKenyatta says, “My dad told me a long time ago that, ‘You know, son, you got to learn how to curve with life.' I believe I've taken that to heart”He credits his wife and kids with supporting him and enabling his grit. As he's made the transition from being a full-time teacher to a chef, his family has had his back. That includes the stretches when he was working as a line cook for just $9 per hour. With their help and support, he muscled through the most challenging times to build a thriving business. He says the key to building grit is to live in the present. That helps you build your mental strength. Focusing on the past or the future tends to create anxiety that can be self-defeating. “Put one foot in front of the other to continue the path because it will get better,” he says.By following Kenyatta's example and advice, you can strengthen your grit. With practice, you can make it a superpower that enables you to do more good in the world.Guest ProfileKenyatta Ashford (he/him):Chef/Owner, Neutral Ground ChattanoogaAbout Neutral Ground Chattanooga: Neutral Ground ChattanoogaWebsite: www.neutralgroundchatt.comCompany Facebook Page: facebook.com/neutralgroundchattOther URL: wefunder.com/neutralgroundBiographical Information: Raised in the Algiers neighborhood of New Orleans as one of seven siblings, Kenyatta Ashford found his love for food at a young age over lingering family meals hosted by his mother, Sharon, and Uncle Walter. Never one to follow a typical path, Ashford became a high school teacher after playing basketball at Lee University. After building a robust teaching and coaching career, Kenyatta's summer sessions spent helping in a catering kitchen awoke his childhood passion for the tastes of home. Lead by the memories and the tastes of his childhood. With a constant commitment to excellence, Ashford happily accepted his admission into the Culinary Institute of America, where he built technical expertise and interests in the foodways of his ancestry. After continued study in top-tier culinary institutions in New York, Rhode Island, and Louisiana, he went on to study scaled preparation techniques in the hospitality industry through the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. Like much of the hospitality industry, Kenyatta's role was furloughed early during the pandemic, leaving him with a sound set of skills and a family to help feed. Within weeks, he created the concept for Neutral Ground and set up a shop in Chattanooga's Proof Incubator. The name Neutral Ground is an homage to the strip of land between neighborhoods in New Orleans that originates as the trade and gathering area across identities. Ashford carries this spirit into creating common spaces where people can come together across backgrounds and beliefs. The menu at Neutral Ground is a product of Ashford's “afro-creole” identity and vision, where he's constantly reflecting on and reimagining cuisine that reaches back to his ancestors who were enslaved in West Africa and brought to the Americas and journeys through the rich and often over-simplified culinary traditions of his hometown New Orleans. Dishes on the menu range from bean and rice dishes with African influences to interpretations of working-class staples from New Orleans, like po'boys and yakamein, which reflect his understanding of Afro-Creole cuisine.Kenyatta recently won Food Network's Chopped, and he and Neutral Ground have been featured in Conde Nast, Eater, Travel Noire, the New York Times, and more. Beyond the kitchen, Ashford is passionate about providing pathways for emerging culinary leaders into the industry. His first team member to join Neutral Ground is a former student and player from his coaching days. Groucho, Zeppo, Gummo, Chico, and Harpo--also known as The Marx Brothers--not only changed the way we think of comedy, but they helped shape our modern notions of cinema as well. Does their biting wit and chaotic humor hold up today? I absolutely think so. In fact, I think we need a lot more humor today to help us break the tensions that we feel on a daily basis--and our guest agrees. Dr. Robert Weir is a retired history professor who most recently taught at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. He's a former senior Fulbright scholar to New Zealand, a past president of the Northeast Popular Culture Association, and the author of 11 books and numerous other academic works. We talk about comedy today, do college-age students get the humor of the Marx Bros, the anti Semitism that they faced, and the origins of their rise to stardom. If you have never seen a a Marx Bros. film, drop everything and go check out A Night at the Opera or my personal favorite, Horsefeathers. In fact, you stay here and I'll drop everything and go watch a Marx Bros. film. (It sounds like the setup for a great Groucho zinger.) 33:51 How did anti-Semitism impact their careers? 45:54 Before Jim Halpert was breaking the wall, Groucho was showing how it is done by bringing in popular culture. 49:02 The Marx Bros. did NOT want the music in the film, which sounds absurd. 52:15 Why was Harpo silent? 58:23 Margaret Dumont reminds me of Bea Arthur--owning every scene she is in with nothing more than a look. 1:01:06 Why was Horsefeathers an unpleasant film to make? 1:04:14 Is the speakeasy in Horsefeathers a reflection of reality or a political statement? 1:06:56 What did writing this book teach you about comedy? 1:10:09 I get asked about my favorite form of comedy. Things get chaotic. 1:11:40 Concluding thoughts and I even throw in a few of my own Marx Bros.-inspired jokes. // WEBSITE // Head over to the website to learn more about me and to contact me. https://theneutralgroundpodcast.com/ // EPISODE SUGGESTIONS // 1. The 2015 vote of the  New Orleans City Council to remove four Confederate monuments from public grounds was met with death threats, protests, lawsuits, and rallies.  Writer and comedian CJ Hunt, curious “why a losing army from 1865 still holds so much power in America” covered the hearings and protests. The result of Hunt's exploration is a documentary called *The Neutral Ground--*a personal, disturbing, sometimes-funny, and informative exploration of the struggle over the removal of the monuments in New Orleans. But more broadly, the film, an official selection of the both the Tribeca Film Festival and AFI Docs, is an examination of collective memory, the myths of the confederacy, how history was re-written and reaffirmed, and the price paid, especially by Black people, to keep the story of “Lost Cause” alive.  In this podcast from 2021, CJ Hunt talks about the film's journey from short funny video to a timely and scholarly documentary, his decision to insert himself as a central character in the film, the conversations Black people have been having about these monuments since Frederick Douglass, and how humor can be a great method to get people to examine uncomfortable truths.

While in college in 2008, Perry Wirth decided entrepreneurship was for him. He found his Ikiigai, a Japanese term many people search for. It's the combination of doing what you love, with what you're good at, what you can be paid for, and what people need...  He opened Neutral Ground in Grafton, Wisconsin, a martial arts academy that specializes in helping kids and adults learn how to defend themselves and grow in a supportive community that genuinely cares about each other. He is also a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) and a Judo Black Belt.  In 2011 he also started working for the world's largest digital consulting agency. He has learned over the years what it means to have balance and incredible time management skills.  When he realized his Academy's impact on him, he went on a mission to work on his business, which led to working on himself. As an entrepreneur, you are your business; to grow it, you must evolve. Perry knows that he played a small game for many years with the Academy he was building and the impact he was having. He was on a mission to improve himself, precisely one skill, Communication. He now also specializes in personal development and mindset coaching. Using martial arts and his Academy as his platform, and with formal training from some of the top communication masters (Such as the Enlifted Method with Mark England and Human Interaction Technology with Michael Bernoff), he is on a mission to help others to realize their potential. He knows, like him, there are many people out there who are playing a small game that is hurting them inside, and all they need is a slight shift to get on their path. Today, Perry has become a manager at the consulting agency, and through his Academy, his passion has helped thousands of kids and adults get on the path of playing a bigger game in their own lives.  To learn more about Perry you can visit his Academy website at https://graftonmartialarts.com/ or connect with him on Instagram @PJtheLLAMA   Gift a one-time (or recurring) donation to 13 Questions Podcast: https://13questionspodcast.com/support/ 13 Questions on LiberaPay Ceremonial Grade Cacao from Jonas Ketterle Shungite from Derek Condit Red Light Therapy from Mark Sloan Contact the Podcast: 13questionspodcast@gmail.com  Gab Instagram Twitter Discord Telegram LinkedIn Gratitude Jingle by Sir Felix https://sirfelix.bandcamp.com/music Closing Music by Supaman - Why https://supamanhiphop.com/ Website/logo design by blakeArt®: https://gaudetedevelopment.com/
