What better way to end the series than have a star of stage and screen on the podcast to see us out? In this final episode Fleur's admiration for today's guest is mutually shared; as actor, director and producer Zawe Ashton lets slip that she's a Strictly Come Dancing superfan. Now a Hollywood actor, Zawe opens up about the ups and downs of cementing your place as a well known actor and explores how the life lessons of her childhood shaped her older self.
#ZaweAshton and #SopeDirisu star in this romantic comedy-drama set in 1800s #England, and it's such a feel-good movie where everybody wins. Things are set into motion when Julia (Zawe) fails to meet Mr. Malcolm's (Sope) list of requirements in a marriage partner. Furious, she enlists her childhood friend, Selina (Freida Pinto), in a plot to humiliate him with a false romance. But things backfire when the fake romance turns very real. From the start, it's difficult not to like most of these flawed characters who are at times silly but also endearing in one way or another. Despite her machinations, Julia is ultimately not a bad person and is deserving of love. The same can be said of Mr. Malcolm. I was ready to despise Julia and her childish plot, but Zawe brings such a girly warmth, strength and innocence to the character that it's difficult not to like her anyway and eventually root for her to find her own love amongst the convoluted courtship of the day. Sope and Selina are also excellent in the awkward and impassioned courtship. Selina's intelligence and honesty (as far as her views are concerned) lead Jeremy to question himself and his rigid nature. They balance each other in a way, and the journey is interesting to see. One of the best things about the movie, I must add, is the great diversity and having Black and POC characters as leads in a story that is both a period piece and a universal story that anyone can relate to. #mrmalcolmslist is available on streaming at #amazonstudios and #appletvplus among others. (Also catch Sope in the second season of #GangsofLondon this November on #amcplus and #skytv) . . . #NaokoMori #OliverJacksonCohen #AshleyPark #GemmaChan #TheoJames #VertigoFilms #BleeckerStreet #EmmaHollyJones #UniversalPictures #mrmalcolmslist #movies #romance #periodpieces #moviesbasedonbooks #SuzanneAllain --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/nancygandcorryg/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/nancygandcorryg/support
In this episode of Girls On Film Anna Smith does a deep dive into MR. MALCOLM'S LIST, a new release starring Zawe Ashton, Freida Pinto and Sope Dirisu, directed by Emma Holly Jones in her feature debut. Anna talks to Emma Holly Jones about this Regency RomCom with a difference: about what it takes to get a first feature made, about historical accuracy versus depicting diverse female agency on screen and about casting and working with Freida Pinto and Zawe Ashton during lockdown. Zawe Ashton joins Anna to talk about playing Julia Thistlewaite in MR. MALCOLM'S LIST opposite Freida Pinto as Selina Dalton. Zawe talks about her view of the film's narrative, the pleasure of working with Freida Pinto and the other women in the film, and on making a movie in which female friendship is as important as the love interest. UK listeners can watch MR. MALCOLM'S LIST in cinemas from 26 August 2022. Zawe Ashton has been starring in more high-profile projects over the last few years, with her biggest to date next year in the form of "The Marvels." For now, she's playing Julia Thistlewaite in the new period drama "Mr. Malcolm's List," co-starring Freida Pinto, Ṣọpẹ́ Dìrísù, Oliver Jackson-Cohen, Ashley Park & Theo James. The film's diverse cast is unique for a period costume drama, and the end result is a funny, dramatic and delightful film that stands as one of the best in its genre, and Zawe is a huge reason for that. She was kind enough to spend some time talking with us about her work on the film, which you can listen to below. Be sure to please check out the film, which is playing this weekend in theaters from Bleecker Street. Thank you, and enjoy! Check out more on NextBestPicture.com Please subscribe on... In a special episode to mark International Women's Day 2022, multi-award winning author, screenwriter and playwright Malorie Blackman OBE joins host Zawe Ashton to tell her why writing about black joy is so important to her. After being discouraged from being a teacher because of the colour of her skin, Malorie went on to write over 70 children's, YA and picture books (some of which have been adapted into hugely successful TV dramas and stage plays), and was the first black Children's Laureate between 2013 and 2015. As she tells Zawe, the omission of black characters from the books she read as a child fueled her fire, and despite receiving over 80 rejection letters on her writing journey, she persevered. For many readers of colour, her work has allowed them to finally see themselves in literature, and her Noughts and Crosses series of six titles and three novellas are now considered one of the most substantial contributions ever to be made to young adult fiction. Malorie's book choices are: ** Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë ** Rebecca by Daphne Du Maurier** The Color Purple by Alice Walker** The Bluest Eye by Toni Morrison ** The Women of Brewster Place by Gloria Naylor Zawe Ashton, acclaimed actress, director, playwright and author, hosts this special edition of the chart-topping Women's Prize for Fiction Podcast. The new Women's Prize Podcast season continues to celebrate the best fiction written by women, by interviewing inspirational women about the books that have most influenced their life and career. Actor, presenter and advocate Jameela Jamil tells Zawe why we need to own the narrative around women's bodies. Jameela started out on T4 in 2009, before becoming the first solo female presenter of the Radio 1 Chart show. But it was her move to the States in 2016 which really propelled her into the international spotlight. Taking on acting for the first time, she landed a role in the NBC series The Good Place, she's appeared in numerous films and TV shows and has recently been cast by Marvel. All the while being an honest, raw and outspoken voice on social media. She's not afraid to call out the beauty, fashion or media industries for their unrealistic expectations of women, she's publicly criticised various celebrities for the impact their words and actions can have on their fans, she's campaigned to get social media platforms to better protect teenagers and her instagram feed and podcast I Weigh have become a movement to encourage everyone to feel good about their bodies. Jameela's book choices are: ** Hunger: A Memoir of my Body by Roxanne Gay** Period Power by Maisie Hill** The Transgender Issue by Shon Faye** The Vagina Bible by Dr Jennifer Gunter** Everything's Trash but it's OK by Phoebe Robinson Zawe Ashton, acclaimed actress, director, playwright and author, hosts Season Four of the chart-topping Women's Prize for Fiction Podcast. Activist, playwright, novelist, critic, broadcaster and ‘searcher' Bonnie Greer tells Zawe about the power of being on the outside looking in. Bonnie is one of the UK's most influential black cultural figures - having played a part in running numerous major institutions including the British Museum, the Royal Opera House, London Film School, RADA, Serpentine Gallery and Theatre Royal Stratford East. You may well have seen her on TV, as a regular contributor to Newsnight Late Review, or a panelist on Question Time, where in 2009 she famously took down the BNP leader Nick Griffin in what is still one of the programmes most watched - and most controversial - episodes. Bonnie has written numerous plays, musicals and operas which have appeared everywhere from Radio 4 to the West End, and is the author of five books, spanning fiction, non-fiction and memoir. She was awarded an OBE in 2010. Bonnie's book choices are: ** Small Island by Andrea Levy** Their Eyes were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston** Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone by JK Rowling** Character Breakdown by Zawe Ashton** Entropy by Bonnie Greer Zawe Ashton, acclaimed actress, director, playwright and author, hosts Season Four of the chart-topping Women's Prize for Fiction Podcast. Welcome to a very special episode of Fear Itself. We are changing direction and talking about love, itself. It seems to me that love is the opposite of fear, and it has the same power over us and our lives. Love can change what we do, how we feel, and our entire outlook on life. It can motivate us to do amazing things, but it also can be paralysing in its intensity. In these special episodes, I'll be talking to my guests about what love means to them.My guest this week is Zawe Ashton who is an actor, writer and director. You will have seen her most recently in Harold Pinter's Betrayal in the West End or on Broadway or opposite Jake Gyllenhall and Rene Russo in Velvet Buzzsaw on Netflix. Her unconventional memoir "Character Breakdown' was released in paperback in the Spring – I have recently read this book and I have to say that Zawe’s writing shoots straight to my heart, it’s beautifully honest and raises important questions about identity and truth. She's currently shooting the Handmaids Tale in Canada. ** This episode was recorded remotely over Zoom due to Covid ** See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
We welcomed the beautiful and brilliant Zawe Ashton to ours last Friday with an unexpected guest, Fresh Meat co-star Charlotte Richie (who Jessie used to babysit back in the day!).The author and actress devoured mums sticky short ribs (even kindly put them on her last supper meal!), spoke all about being a child actor, being bullied, The Handmaids Tale and her new book Character Breakdown. We chatted about the go to places to eat after you've stepped off stage on Broadway, how savoury porridge saved her life, the thrills of cheap red wine and being a devotee of Terry's Chocolate Orange. She shares with us her mum's Ugandan cooking, what was in her lunchbox and Lennie’s love of Margaret Atwood. This has SO MUCH GOOD STUFF IN IT! Enjoy and thank you Zawe for being so wonderful x See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Welcome to the final episode of Season 1! Robert & Russell meet leading actress, writer & director Zawe Ashton, author of new book 'Character Breakdown' and who initially came to prominence as Vod in Channel 4's Fresh Meat. We discuss Zawe's recent leading film role in art-world satire Velvet Buzzsaw (in which she starred alongside Renee Russo & Jake Gyllenhaal). We learn about artworks that Zawe has connected with over the years including photographer Deana Lawson, Andreas Gursky and Kerry James Marshall, what she learned by interviewing legendary American performance artist Lorraine O’Grady for the Tate, and we discover why she researched the art of Tracey Emin while building her art dealer character for current stage performance in Harold Pinter's Betrayal on London's West End (which will soon travel to Broadway, New York). Thank you for listening to Season 1. We will be back soon with more exciting interviews. Please message us at Instagram @talkart and let us know which episode you loved most from the first series. Thanks for listening. Art for everyone!! See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Actress Zawe Ashton joins Gemma Cairney to the talk about how she spends her leisure time shopping in retail parks and how these seemingly menial non-artistic places calms her. Born in Hackney in London, Zawe attended Manchester University School of Theatre, where she gained her degree in acting. Her portrayal of Vod in Sam Bain and Jesse Armstrong's Fresh Meat won her a cult following and the diversity of her work across television, film and stage has attracted numerous accolades.
Welcome, welcome, welcome to episode 263 of the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip! A perfect conversation on all things theatre, art, culture, creation and all that these elements bring, with the powerful and awesome ZAWE ASHTON!“You cannot work for an audience, you have to work for the truth of what you’ve created, and just trust that the response you get will be the truthful response and the right response”This episode’s theme: HOLD YOUR NERVE.What an epic one this is… A great back and forth with Pip and Zawe, who have crossed paths on a number of occasions but now find over an hour to catch up and all for our benefit! It only took them four years to sort out… In a way that’s worked out perfectly though, as there is just more to talk about! With Zawe currently starring in Harold Pinter’s ‘Betrayal’ at the Harold Pinter Theatre, she is fully immersed in the Pinter world (this podcast was also recorded there), and as such has a lot to add about his universe and the many facets thereof, but not before we go back into time and take a peek at the old skool spoken word days! From humble beginnings with poems scribbled on school folders, to being at drama school from a very early age, to Jungian mantras, to casting yourself in your own life, to being in an onstage ‘throuple’ and on-screen ensemble, to the many masks we all wear in our own lives, to her love of art and the abstract, to growing into her adult self and finding that flow state, to the trials of having her own play performed after years in limbo and SO much more including her new book 'Character Breakdown'… You’ll get much out of this one. Zawe Ashton is talking burnout, how women of colour are treated by the medical world, and making your voice heard as she joins Abby Hollick under the duvet. The actor behind the infamous Vod in Channel 4's Fresh Meat gets frank about her own experience with having doors slammed in her face, and the impact that can have on mental health, especially when you're the only person of colour in the room. She tells us about her teenage bedroom, her love of Blur and Will Smith and the times she spent wandering around with a duvet draped over her head! Plus, she explains what it's like to be an child actor when you just want to fit in at school, and why writing her first book is her version of rebelling against a life spent acting. Get cosy and join Zawe and Abby for the type of honest chat that only happens when you're horizontal and in the best place ever: bed.
