Tune in as Jessica and Saunya (Opinionated Lushes) rejoin Arthur to review and recap The Marvels, the sequel to 2019's Captain Marvel (and a few other pieces of the ever-growing MCU). The multiple factors that led to this becoming a box office bomb, the real-life cases to which the Kree's colonialist and imperialist regime can be compared (*cough cough* Israel and the U.S.), and Kamala Khan being an authentically and lovably cringey teenager comprise just a few of the talking points that the hosts dive into today. Directed by Nia DaCosta, The Marvels stars Brie Larson, Iman Vellani, Teyonah Parris, Zawe Ashton, Samuel L. Jackson, Park Seo-joon, Gary Lewis, Zenobia Shroff, Mohan Kapur, Saagar Shaikh, Leila Farzad, Abraham Popoola, Lashana Lynch, Tessa Thompson, and Daniel Ings. Hey everyone, Marvel Studios' final film of 2023 - The Marvels - has now released in theaters. This was, by no means, my most anticipated comic book movie of the year because I don't think the first Captain Marvel is great and the trailers seemed like Thor: Love and Thunder 2.0. The lack of confidence from Marvel and Disney to screen this film in advance also made me nervous going on. I don't remember the last time I was as unenthused with an MCU movie going in, not helped by numerous articles and scoops about the messiness of the future of it right now. But alas, I have seen the film. Was it good? Find out in this review. The Marvels: Directed by: Nia DaCosta Screenplay by: Nia DaCosta and Megan McDonnell and Elissa Karasik Produced by: Kevin Feige Executive Producers: Louis D'Esposito, Victoria Alonso, Mary Livanos and Matthew Jenkins Co-Producer: David J. Jackson Synopsis: Carol Danvers AKA Captain Marvel has reclaimed her identity from the tyrannical Kree and taken revenge on the Supreme Intelligence. But unintended consequences see Carol shouldering the burden of a destabilized universe. When her duties send her to an anomalous wormhole linked to a Kree revolutionary, her powers become entangled with that of Jersey City super-fan Kamala Khan, aka Ms. Marvel, and Carol's estranged niece, now S.A.B.E.R. astronaut Captain Monica Rambeau.

Trick or Treat: Movie Prescriptions for Halloween

Nothing says Halloween more like the time-honored tradition of settling in for a scary movie. Kristen Meinzer is a culture critic and host of the podcast "By The Book" and Rafer Guzman is a film critic for Newsday. Together Kristen and Rafer are the co-hosts of the podcast, Movie Therapy, and they joined The Takeaway to give their picks for Halloween movie prescriptions for different occasions. KRISTEN'S PICKS: Movie prescription for a romantic night: Warm Bodies (2013) A zombie romantic comedy. After a highly unusual zombie saves a still-living girl from an attack, the two form a relationship that sets in motion events that might transform the entire lifeless world. Movie prescription for family viewing: Cruella (2021)Cruella isn't specifically a Halloween movie, but it has that Halloweeny goth vibe and loads of fabulous costumes...as well as our lead's fabulous disguise! Movie prescription for satire/comedy lovers: Velvet Buzzsaw (2019) A satirical horror comedy about the art world - from the snobbery to the wealth to all the people who take themselves way too seriously - starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Zawe Ashton, Rene Russo, Toni Collette, Daveed Diggs, Nitya Vidyasagar, Tom Sturridge, Natalia Dyer, Billy Magnussen, Mig Macario, and John Malkovich. RAFER'S PICKS: Date horror movie: Night of the Comet (1984) Little known horror-comedy from 1984. Great valley-girls-versus-zombies premise, fun cast (Dick Rude, Mary Woronov) and a rare Hispanic leading man. Cute, funny, scary and romantic. Joss Whedon cited it as one inspiration for “Buffy and the Vampire Slayer.” Horror movie with the kids: Gremlins (1984) I still love this movie, which I saw as a kid, and I was just delighted by it. During the pandemic, I rented a movie theater for my son's birthday, and this is what we saw. I was really happy to see them jump out of their chairs one minute and then crack up the next. Plus it takes place during Christmas, so it's really an all-fall holiday treat. Best ‘70s horror movie you probably haven't seen: The Brood (1979)Early David Cronenberg, an extremely weird movie about a divorce that leads to the psychic birth of demonic children who roam around killing adults. Great cast, with Samantha Eggar as a kind of queen bee of the demon-spawn, and Oliver Reed as the leader of a 70s self-help cult that goes too far. Cronenberg wrote it following his own divorce, and it came out the same year as Kramer Vs Kramer, hilariously. Roger Ebert called it “reprehensible trash.”

#ZaweAshton and #SopeDirisu star in this romantic comedy-drama set in 1800s #England, and it's such a feel-good movie where everybody wins. Things are set into motion when Julia (Zawe) fails to meet Mr. Malcolm's (Sope) list of requirements in a marriage partner. Furious, she enlists her childhood friend, Selina (Freida Pinto), in a plot to humiliate him with a false romance. But things backfire when the fake romance turns very real. From the start, it's difficult not to like most of these flawed characters who are at times silly but also endearing in one way or another. Despite her machinations, Julia is ultimately not a bad person and is deserving of love. The same can be said of Mr. Malcolm. I was ready to despise Julia and her childish plot, but Zawe brings such a girly warmth, strength and innocence to the character that it's difficult not to like her anyway and eventually root for her to find her own love amongst the convoluted courtship of the day. Sope and Selina are also excellent in the awkward and impassioned courtship. Selina's intelligence and honesty (as far as her views are concerned) lead Jeremy to question himself and his rigid nature. They balance each other in a way, and the journey is interesting to see. One of the best things about the movie, I must add, is the great diversity and having Black and POC characters as leads in a story that is both a period piece and a universal story that anyone can relate to. #mrmalcolmslist is available on streaming at #amazonstudios and #appletvplus among others. The script for "Mr. Malcolm's List" sat on the Hollywood Black List before being picked up by director Emma Holly Jones, who developed the script into a short film before getting the green light for a feature. The film, set in Regency-era England, tells the story of a particularly picky eligible bachelor, and a woman who was scorned by him who becomes bent on revenge. We're joined by Jones, actor and executive producer Freida Pinto (who plays love interest Selina) and actor Zawe Ashton (who plays schemer Julia). "Mr. Malcolm's List" is playing now in theaters everywhere.

Zawe Ashton has been starring in more high-profile projects over the last few years, with her biggest to date next year in the form of "The Marvels." For now, she's playing Julia Thistlewaite in the new period drama "Mr. Malcolm's List," co-starring Freida Pinto, Ṣọpẹ́ Dìrísù, Oliver Jackson-Cohen, Ashley Park & Theo James. The film's diverse cast is unique for a period costume drama, and the end result is a funny, dramatic and delightful film that stands as one of the best in its genre, and Zawe is a huge reason for that. She was kind enough to spend some time talking with us about her work on the film, which you can listen to below. Be sure to please check out the film, which is playing this weekend in theaters from Bleecker Street. Thank you, and enjoy! Check out more on NextBestPicture.com Please subscribe on...
