Exactly one year after his historic comeback in the seminal Pulp Fiction (which he received an Oscar nomination for), John Travolta followed it up with this slick and crime caper/satire adapted from the Elmore Leonard novel of the same name. Here he plays Chili Palmer, a mob enforcer from Miami who LOVES movies, is visiting Los Angeles for the first time, and finds himself very eager to get into the movie business. Once there, he meets a schlock producer (Gene Hackman - RIP), a scream queen (Rene Russo), a pretentious movie star (Danny DeVito), and a menacing wanna-be producer (Delroy Lindo)....among several others. And wouldn't you know it....Chili finds himself getting involved in the movie business. :) Directed by Barry Sonnenfeld (The Addams Family, Men In Black), this would go on to be on of the more quotable and fondly remembered crime comedies of the '90's featuring a cast including several other legends including Bette Midler, the late great Dennis Farina, and the late, great James Gandolfini. Our 'movies about presidents' series continues (probably for four more years) with a much better movie this time. 1993's Wolfgang Peterson joint In the Line of Fire, featuring Clint Eastwood again (are we... doing a Clint Eastwood season now?) as jaded old Secret Service agent Frank Horrigan, veteran of a particular epic fail in Dallas 1963, up against the 90s serial killer shtick of rogue CIA super-assassin John Malkovich and, even more dauntingly, the merciless side-eye of fellow agent Rene Russo. A superior slice of 90s Hollywood nonsense with a nice line in gentle self-mockery and some adorable early digital effects. This is a fun one, kids. Full episode exclusive for Patreon subscribers. (Deep Dive begins at 56:15) "That monkey's infected, Sam!" Join your favorite TransAtlantic podcasting crew – Ian and Liam (B-Tech Kev & Megs are in quarantine) – as we head to the world of deadly diseases, military cover-ups, and Dustin Hoffman yelling at Morgan Freeman in Outbreak (1995). We're trading in our tiny law office for a hazmat suit and diving into our 269th episode as we discuss: How Dustin Hoffman, Rene Russo, and Morgan Freeman bring gravity to this viral thriller. Kevin Spacey might be a substandard person but he's an exceptional actor Did this film need a love story? Was Donald Sutherland the perfect villain, or just chewing the scenery? Which actor surprisingly didn't capture the essence of the part for one of us. How realistic is Outbreak, and does it hit differently after recent real-world events? How this movie has the ultimate magic do-hickey How important is the final scene in a film? Did Kevin Spacey's character deserve better? What about the monkey? We talk about containment protocols, rogue helicopters, and the ethics of bombing a small town. Just how easy is it to steal a military helicopter? Why does it take 3.5 hours to fly to a target to drop a bomb? Whether Outbreak is the Best Film Ever. Become a Patron of this podcast and support the BFE at https://www.patreon.com/BFE. Thirty years ago this month, acclaimed director Wolfgang Petersen (Das Boot, Air Force One, The Perfect Storm) gave us a terrifying viral thriller which at the time MIGHT have seemed like pure fiction....but WAS it? :o Well regardless it was a big hit and featured a stacked cast featuring Oscar-winners Dustin Hoffman, Morgan Freeman, Kevin Spacey, and Cuba Gooding Jr plus Rene Russo and the late, great Donald Sutherland. (How did those last two never receive Oscar nominations??) A brand new deadly virus has travelled from overseas via an innocent monkey who stowed away on a shipping barge....and that monkey has landed in Southern California....and this virus has started to spread around one truly unfortunate isolated small town. People are dying as the virus mutates and the only folks who can stop it are a team of Army doctors who have to figure out how to find a cure. It's all very '90's though very scary nonetheless....and remember to wash your hands! After Lethal Weapon 2 came out and became the third highest grossing film of that year, producers wanted more. So Jeffrey Boam, along with his buddy Robert Mark Kamen (The Karate Kid) once again churned out a script, director Richard Donner came aboard, and everything was one big happy shoot! Of course, this isn't the whole story. So download the show below to find out how Lethal Weapon 3 REALLY happened. Plus, what does Princess Leia have to do with it? How hard was it to get Joe Pesci signed on immediately after winning his Oscar? Why was Rene Russo brought in? Find out as Garrett, Adam, and Matt break all this down, as well as give their thoughts on one of 1992's biggest action films. Also, come back next week as we close this series out and announce our next long form retro that will only rival Stephen King as far as length. Hint, it's something we've been asked to do since we started ten years ago!

Welcome to another episode of The Video Store Podcast, where each week we pull some movies off the shelf and recommend a few you might want to watch. This week's theme is sports comedies, specifically some great ones from the '80s that still hold up. If you're in the mood for underdogs, quirky characters, and a lot of laughs, these films should hit the spot. The Best of Times (1986)This one often flies under the radar, but it shouldn't. Starring Robin Williams and Kurt Russell, it's a heartfelt comedy about reliving past mistakes and trying to rewrite history on a small-town football field. Williams plays a guy still hung up on a dropped pass from years ago, and Russell is the former star quarterback who gets roped into a plan to replay the game. Directed by Roger Spottiswoode, the movie balances humor with some surprisingly emotional moments. Major League (1989)A classic baseball comedy about a ragtag Cleveland Indians team that's supposed to fail but manages to surprise everyone. Charlie Sheen stars as “Wild Thing” Rick Vaughn, a pitcher with a blazing fastball and no control, alongside a great ensemble cast including Tom Berenger, Wesley Snipes, and Rene Russo. Directed by David S. Ward, the film has a sharp sense of humor but also doesn't shy away from celebrating the game itself. The film was so beloved it sparked two sequels, though neither quite captured the charm of the original.Caddyshack (1980)What's a sports comedy list without Caddyshack? Directed by Harold Ramis, this movie redefined the genre with its irreverent humor and unforgettable cast, including Chevy Chase, Rodney Dangerfield, and Bill Murray. Set at a country club golf course, it's less about the game and more about the absurd characters and their crazy antics. One of my favorite characters, the gopher puppet, was added late in production and ended up being one of the most memorable parts of the film. If you haven't seen it or haven't watched it in a while, it's always worth revisiting.Wildcats (1986)Goldie Hawn leads this football comedy as Molly McGrath, a high school track coach who takes on the challenge of coaching a boys' varsity football team in a rough neighborhood. The film has a lot of charm, mostly thanks to Hawn's performance, which balances humor with just enough seriousness to make you root for her and the team. It's also an early film for Wesley Snipes and Woody Harrelson, who both went on to major careers. This was a great cable TV comedy and I watched it dozen of time on HBO and still bought in on VHS.That's the lineup for this week: The Best of Times, Major League, Caddyshack, and Wildcats. Each one brings something a little different to the table, but they all share a love for sports and comedy. Let me know what you think, and if there's a movie you'd like me us recommend, leave us a comment. Thanks for reading Video Store Podcast! Subscribe for free to receive new posts and support my work. We're hours away from Scary Movie Month and---while Nightcrawler doesn't exactly qualify as frightening---it IS intense. Jake Gyllenhaal is certainly at his Taxi Driver weirdest. He's also just about at his best in Dan Gilroy's investigation of capitalism-at-any-cost. Rough stuff, but it's also quite funny. Gyllenhaal plays an amoral "stringer" (a freelance videographer) who knows that ratings equals money and "if it bleeds, it leads". He'll do absolutely anything to get the shot...and then we discover the gory results. Rene Russo, Bill Paxton and Riz Ahmed are effective too, but this film belongs to the worm in the lead role. So doll up to look your best before you go on the air to glorify crime scenes and put a scare in your viewers as the 613rd episode of Have You Ever Seen gets deep into the scummy world of Nightcrawler. In this energetic episode of "The Rewatch Party," hosts Nick, Anthony, Elise, and the ever-resilient Still Alive Manny dive into the rewatchability of the 1992 action-comedy hit "Lethal Weapon 3." The episode kicks off with the crew reminiscing about the legacy of the "Lethal Weapon" series and how this third installment continues the story of the beloved duo, Martin Riggs and Roger Murtaugh, played by Mel Gibson and Danny Glover. They discuss the excitement and anticipation that surrounded the film's release and how it measures up to the first two entries in the series. As the discussion unfolds, the hosts explore the evolving dynamics between Riggs and Murtaugh, highlighting how "Lethal Weapon 3" balances their trademark humor with more mature themes, such as Murtaugh's approaching retirement and the duo's increasing camaraderie. The addition of Rene Russo as Lorna Cole is a focal point of the conversation, as the hosts delve into how her character brings a fresh and exciting element to the film, particularly with her strong chemistry with Riggs. The hosts also analyze the film's action sequences, from explosive set pieces to the high-stakes shootouts that have become synonymous with the franchise. Nick, Anthony, Elise, and Still Alive Manny discuss the blend of thrilling action and comedic moments, particularly Joe Pesci's return as the lovable, fast-talking Leo Getz. They debate whether the film's lighter tone detracts from or enhances its rewatchability, ultimately agreeing that the balance of humor and heart is a key factor in the film's enduring appeal. Whether you're a longtime fan of the "Lethal Weapon" series or just revisiting this third installment, this episode of "The Rewatch Party" offers a lively and thoughtful analysis of what makes "Lethal Weapon 3" a worthy and rewatchable entry in the franchise. The hosts celebrate the film's ability to entertain while deepening the characters we've come to love, making a strong case for why "Lethal Weapon 3" continues to be a must-watch for action-comedy enthusiasts. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0104714/

Season 1 comes to close as we review the sweet tale of a golfer who knows greatness courts failure - and whose inner child needs a spanking. Tin Cup came out in the summer of ‘96 and immediately shoved in next to Caddyshack for the title of Greatest Golf Movie Ever. I love Caddyshack, but I my vote goes to the Cup. Kevin Costner's hilarious portrayal of the goofy, loveable and self-destructive Roy McAvoy is one of his finest - and I'll fight to the death defending that. The top-notch cast included Don Johnson, Cheech Marin, Rene Russo, a pack of “that guys” as his crew and many cameos from real-life pros and TV personalities of the time. The script was both lyrical and hilarious and you don't have to love golf to love this movie. Tin Cup - join us.

Right smack in the middle of his run of playing James Bond in four consecutive movies, Pierce Brosnan took a SLIGHT detour in this remake of a sorta-classic from 1968, the romantic thriller of the same name starring Steve McQueen and Faye Dunaway. This is a somewhat modernized remake as we follow the exploits of a billionaire playboy named Thomas Crown (Brosnan) who also moonlights as an art thief....and the crafty art bounty hunter who's on his tail (in more ways than one) Catherine Banning played by Rene Russo. And wouldn't you know it...these two take a liking for each other. Not only that but could THIS be the best Bond-life performance ever given by Brosnan, even better than when he actually played bond? Inquiring minds want to know in this breezy romantic caper directed by John McTiernan. Yes the SAME McTiernan who had directed action classics such as Predator and Die Hard more than a decade prior....who knew that he also had a romantic streak? :) Host: Geoff GershonEdited By Ella GershonProducer: Marlene GershonSend us a Text Message.https://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/

And Mets reliever, Jorge Lopez will lose his roster spot after he blows up on the mound and then later off of it. Next Show: Leo's Pick: The Outfit (1973) Tom's Pick: Breaking Away (1979)

“This becomes a sitcom!” - Eric, on this sequel's goofiness On this week's episode, the gang gets into action mode to talk about the incredibly silly sequel, Lethal Weapon 3! Why can't Roger Murtaugh take a bath IN PEACE?! Did they really have to amp up all the grab-ass in this one? How is this evil ex-cop sneaking into all these high security areas like he's some kind of ghost? What were they thinking with Pesci's hair? And why couldn't we see Rene Russo's Lorna Cole playing that Three Stooges CD-ROM game? PLUS: How many people said HARD PASS before they cast this villain? Lethal Weapon 3 stars Danny Glover, Mel Gibson, Joe Pesci, Rene Russo, Stuart Wilson, Darlene Love, Traci Wolfe, Damon Hines, Ebonie Smith, Mary Ellen Trainor, Mark Pellegrino, and Steve Kahan as Captain Murphy; directed by Richard Donner. Welcome back ladies and gents to another episode of Woody Adjacent! This time we come back to our Ai Companion's recommendation of the very well loved movie: Get Shorty (1995) As well as talking about the original 1995 film adaptation, we also get into a discussion on the much HATED sequel 'Be Cool' (2005) and lastly the more recent fresh TV adaptation created in 2017 It's always interesting to see what the Ai comes up with after analysing Woody Allens Filmography and writing style... its even more fun hearing its reasonings for picking the film itself, which it does! Get ready for a fun ride and another great conversation :) __________________________________________ In Get Shorty (1995) Chili Palmer (John Travolta) is a Miami loan shark with a secret dream. Stuck collecting debts for a ruthless mob boss (Dennis Farina), Chili gets sent to Los Angeles to track down a down-on-his-luck producer named Harry Zimm (Gene Hackman) who owes a hefty gambling debt. Upon arriving in Hollywood, Chili quickly realizes the film industry is surprisingly similar to the criminal world he knows. He finds himself navigating a landscape of broken promises, shady characters, and desperate hustles. However, Chili's brash confidence and knowledge of the "business" side of things strangely changes his fortune and unlikely partnerships lead to unexpected opportunities for Chilli in Hollywood! “Yes! Bring me more of that sharp profanity!” - Andrew on the Major League script On this week's episode, we're kicking off SHEENPRIL here on We Hate Movies with a chat about the beloved sports comedy, Major League! How bonkers is it that Tom Berenger's Jake Taylor is straight-up stalking Rene Russo's Lynn Wells throughout this whole movie? Was the real Willie Mays Hayes murdered by Wesley's character and this guy just took his place at the tryouts? How many pounds of gravel did James Gammon have to eat throughout his life to get that majestic voice? And who knew Sheen's Ricky “Wild Thing” Vaughn was going to be such a huge sensation? PLUS: Who wins in a fight between James Gammon and Rip Torn?! Major League stars Tom Berenger, Charlie Sheen, Corbin Bernsen, Margaret Whitton, James Gammon, Rene Russo, Wesley Snipes, Charles Cyphers, Chelcie Ross, Dennis Haysbert, and Bob Uecker as Harry Doyle; directed by David S. As we approach Baseball Opening Day 2024, what better way to celebrate than to revisit one of the more beloved baseball films of the 1980's, a comedy with heart focusing on a true underdog franchise, the Cleveland Indians? Directed by David S. Ward, the story focuses on one Cinderella season for the ballclub which is now under the control of a new owner (Margaret Whitton) who is determined to have them lose enough games to kill attendance so that she can move the franchise to Miami. Lead by a new manager (James Gammon) and mostly populated with untested rookies, this rag-tag bunch ends up surprising a lot of folks by competing for the American League Pennant. The roster includes Tom Berenger, Charlie Sheen, Wesley Snipes, Corbin Bernsen, and Rene Russo among several others.....PLAY BALL!Host & Editor: Geoff GershonProducer: Marlene Gershon https://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/

THREE new releases celebrate their BIG 4-0's this week, as March 2nd, 1984, saw the release of AGAINST ALL ODDS, REPO MAN, and the comedy classic THIS IS SPINAL TAP. But SPINAL TAP is not available on any streamer at the moment and, surprisingly, neither Ron nor Peter own it on any physical media. At press time, the DVD has been purchased and delivered and we will remedy the situation on a future episode. But, since we are looking at the Emilo Estevez, sci-fi cult hit REPO MAN this week, we thought in SPINAL TAP's place we'd look at another Estevez sci-fi thriller - one with much less of a cult following - 1992's FREEJACK, co-staring Rene Russo, Anthony Hopkins, and Mick Fucking Jagger! Find out if we think this one deserves a similar status as REPO MAN (and if we think REPO MAN deserves its status...). We also look at the Jeff Bridges/Rachel Ward/James Woods thriller AGAINST ALL ODDS. Please remember to Rate, Like, and Subscribe, and we'll be back next week with are birthday hats on for SPLASH and CHILDREN OF THE CORN!
Tim and Phil dive into one of the all-time best golf movies - the 1996 classic Tin Cup. They talk about their thoughts on the rewatch - Kevin Costner's performance, differing opinions on Rene Russo, the believability of the golf in the movie, the CBS cameos, and much much more!
Here's an underrated romance-ish film for Valentine's Day. The rare remake that succeeded! The Thomas Crown Affair is in some ways the best James Bond movie that Pierce Brosnan was never in. He had some serious chemistry with Rene Russo. It ended up being John McTiernan's final quality contribution to cinema. Some traditionalists will tell you it's unworthy of the Thomas Crown name. The third annual "Failure to Franchise Presents Trev and Chris-Mas" wraps up (see what I did there?) with a look at 1999's The Thomas Crown Affair, a remake of the 1968 classic heist movie starring Steve McQueen and Faye Dunaway. This time around, the titular main character is played by Pierce Brosnan, taking a break from his then current role as James Bond (heard of it?), to try to add another blockbuster franchise under his belt. But despite bringing Rene Russo and Denis Leary along for the ride, getting acclaimed action director John McTiernan to helm the project, and the movie being a box-office success, Brosnan's hopes for a new franchise were still left unrealized. So what happened? Join us as we close out 2023 by discussing that very question, as well as our own thoughts on the film. This week on Fabulous Film & Friends we're going to groove to a tryptic of cool Elmore Leonard adaptations. Why? Because we're that cool. We be talkin' 1995's Get Shorty directed by Barry Sonnenfeld and starring John Travolta, Rene Russo, Gene Hackman, Danny DeVito, Dennis Farina, Delroy Lindo, James Gandlafini, David Paymer and Bette Midler up against 1997's Jackie Brown , directed by Quentin Tarantino and starring Pam Grier, Samuel L. My guests this week are two of my favorite muscle: Lit major and lil' Sis Roseanne Caputi and Actor/ Funnyman/ Photographer, Alex Robertson. Before we jump into the getaway car, the synopses.Get Shorty tells the story of Chili Palmer, mob muscle from Florida who has to collect money in Hollywood for his boss Bones Barboni and in the process becomes involved with a producer named Harry Zimm and finds himself a creative in the movie business. Jackie Brown centers around a Flight Attendant Jackie Brown who gets nabbed by the ATF for smuggling money for the murderous arms dealer Ordell Robbie. Welcome to The B-Side, from The Film Stage. Here we talk about movie stars! Not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones they made in between. Today we go back to celebrate Pittsburgh's first son - Michael Keaton. Our B-Sides today are: Clean and Sober, The Dream Team, One Good Cop, and My Life. Our guest is official five-timer Cory Everett, creator of Cinephile: A Card Game. We dive deep into analyzing how the actor took boring lead roles and made them sing. We marvel at the surprisingly small filmography of model-turned-movie star Rene Russo. We lament the early-90s politics of One Good Cop and we celebrate the fact that The Dream Team has basically aged okay! Which is a near-miracle. Finally, Cory and I describe the difficulty of even finishing watching My Life as fathers with young kids. Perhaps more importantly, does My Life has a premise that is far more famous than the movie itself? Yes! What are other movies like that? Additionally, we mention how 1990 mega-hit is great actually despite its cultural ridicule, and Tony Goldwyn (Ghost co-star) is underrated, and Keaton has a new directorial effort that just premiered at TIFF. There's also his early history as a funny stand-up comedian, his amazing voice work in Porco Rosso, and every moment in the comedy The Other Guys. linktr.ee/CatchingUpOnCinema This September is Masterclass month at Catching Up On Cinema! September is the anniversary month of Catching Up On Cinema, and this year we're celebrating the completion of 5 years of weekly podcasting. For this year's Masterclass, Trevor and Kyle will be reviewing all 4 films in Richard Donner's Lethal Weapon series of films. This week, Kyle and Trevor review Lethal Weapon 3 (1992)! Debuting in theaters in May of 1992, Richard Donner's Lethal Weapon 3 (1992) pulls double duty as being far and away the most profitable of in the franchise, while perhaps also being the least cohesive and satisfying film in the series. On par with Lethal Weapon 2 (1989) in terms of the scale and quality of its action and production design, Lethal Weapon 3 subs in Jan De Bont for Stephen Goldblatt as cinematographer for the production, resulting in silky smooth action shots, and anamorphic lens flares aplenty. The first in the series to be completely divorced from Shane Black's pen, Lethal Weapon 3 is more focused on further crystallizing the characterizations developed over the previous 2 films than actually evolving them. While not lacking for interesting situations for Riggs and Murtaugh to get into, the film very much represents a shift in the priority of the franchise from keeping the plot moving, to providing setups and premises for our immensely affable cast to riff off of. Continuing the trend of growing the Lethal Weapon “family” of characters, the film once again features Joe Pesci, (somehow dialed up beyond the 11 that his character of Leo Getz debuted at in the previous film) and adds Rene Russo to the cast as Lorna Cole, Martin Riggs' high-kicking new love interest. Additionally, Lethal Weapon 3 also features a largely wasted Stuart Wilson as its chief antagonist, as well as a host of familiar genre film favorites such as Sven-Ole Thorsen and Nick Chinlund in generic goon roles. Often very funny, and packed with just enough action and stunts to never be boring, Lethal Weapon 3 is a fine sequel in a remarkably consistent series, however it is often lacking in focus, earning brownie points for featuring social commentary and earnest dramatic elements, but stumbling somewhat in its soggy attempts to tie it all into a cohesive whole. I kick things off this week with a rant about tattoos proving that only those people who don't have them care enough to be vocal about them as we chat about the Top 5 Tattoos in movies.THE INTERN sees Robert De Niro play seventy-year-old widower Ben Whittaker, a retired executive from a phone directory company who starts a new chapter in his life by joining a fast-growing e-commerce fashion startup helmed by visionary entrepreneur Jules Ostin (Anna Hathaway), surprising his new boss with the skills, insights and professional and personal experience he can draw from a life lived to the full along the way. An affable, predictable, and somewhat bland but pleasantly upbeat comedy with some gorgeous styling, De Niro is charming as the wise Ben who teaches us about persistence, patience and how to be a gentleman as Jules grapples with the demands of being an entrepreneur, wife and mother. Subject matter such as celebrating the role of older people in the workplace and the painful sacrifices women must make are of course excellent topics but some more humour would have helped to offset the tediously long-running sub-plots featuring a cast of monotonous supporting characters. Manages to be bafflingly devoid of racial diversity despite being set in Brooklyn. Bad Dad Dan often laments that the world is conspiring against him so he should have some sympathy with his namesake in DAN VS. in which the titular Dan finds himself on the trail of a Wolf-Man when his car is vandalised. If there has been a theme with this week's choices, it's "not enough good jokes" and DAN VS. continues that trend. We love to hear from our listeners! By which I mean we tolerate it. If it hasn't been completely destroyed yet you can usually find us on twitter @dads_film, on Facebook Bad Dads Film Review, on email at baddadsjsy@gmail.com or on our website baddadsfilm.com.
