Jeremy Pope - THE INSPECTION "The Inspection is a 2022 American drama film written and directed by Elegance Bratton. Inspired by Bratton's real-life experiences, the film follows a young man who faces homophobia, both at a Marines boot camp and at home from his mother. It stars Jeremy Pope, Raúl Castillo, McCaul Lombardi, Aaron Dominguez, Nicholas Logan, Eman Esfandi, Andrew Kai, Aubrey Joseph, Bokeem Woodbine, and Gabrielle Union." - Wikipedia THE INSPECTION is a study in building character, especially in the sense that Ellis (Pope) more so builds the characters of those around him as they come to accept who he is. By eventually becoming a family away from family, they realize that his sexual orientation is as much a part of him as his drive, his trustworthiness, his ability to stand with his fellow grunts. And they're made better by understanding that his "difference" is really no different than any of theirs. Of course, not everyone sees it that way -- his mother Inez (Gabrielle Union) is somehow under the impression that he joined the military in order to become a hetero man who would get all the ladies. That somehow the training was a "get straight" camp. It would be hilarious if it wasn't so tragic. In this interview, Jeremy talks about his character's journey. Actress, Singer Janelle Monáe, GLASS ONION: A KNIVES OUT MYSTERY

Damn, that was fun! I don't know about you, but I find the symbolism of a Black woman destroying one of the most famous icons of beauty in the world (read — a specific type of beauty) in order to crumble the ill-gotten empire of a con-artist White man who is only wealthy and considered legendary because he stole ideas and credit from others (most notably from said Black woman) and surrounded himself with “yes men” pretty fucking disruptive. Not only that, but in this interview with Janelle Monáe, she pointed out that the symbolism goes even further. Cassandra and Helen, the names of the twins she plays in the movie, are referencing the sisters of the same names in Greek mythology. Despite being familiar with their stories (more so Cassandra's than Helen's) I didn't catch the reference, but it goes to show that there are near countless fun layers of the film to peel back. Naturally, Helen of Troy was considered one of the most beautiful women in the world, and she was responsible for burning Troy to the ground. Written and directed by Rian Johnson, Glass Onion is the latest installment of the Knives Out (or “A Benoit Blanc Mystery”) series. And it's a complex — yet deliberately deceptively simple and fun — murder mystery that puts the social media age on trial (I mean, who hasn't heard of at least one Birdie [Kate Hudson]?). Simple, much like the “murder mystery” set up in the beginning, because it's easy to see how Miles (played perfectly by Edward Norton) would be the vainglorious villain. But complex, because it could have turned out a number of ways. In fact, it just as easily could have ended with each one of them having a hand in Cass's (Andi's) physical death, just as they did her social and financial “death”. As mentioned and shown in the movie, the mystery is a glass onion itself — seemingly complex with many layers, but the center is in plain sight. There's an interesting thing that happens — in watching movies and in life. Observing our reactions, questioning our perceptions. When Miles gives the drink to Duke (Dave Bautista) the first time, I noticed. And I clocked the fact that he switched it in his retelling. But — even though I initially thought that he deliberately poisoned his friend — I made excuses for Miles. Maybe he misremembered. Maybe he told it differently because he didn't want to be blamed, but he didn't do it intentionally. And “so it goes”. And while that's just a natural part of trying to figure out a mystery, isn't that kind of the point? Earlier in the movie, Lionel (Leslie Odom Jr.) explains to shareholders that while a lot of what Miles does is insane garbage, he is given the benefit of the doubt because of one idea he presented that was bankable. That is what those like him live on. Enough to make the audience doubt what is right in front of their faces — Miles was the one with the most to lose if Cass revealed that she had the real napkin all along. It's as clear as day when she (really, Helen disguised as Cass) arrives on the island and the blood drains from Miles's face. Like the first Knives Out, the cast is simply immaculate. The performances are seamless and believable, no matter how outlandish the characters. They could have been plucked from any news story from the past few years about said types of people. And Daniel Craig's take on the detective has given us a new, engaging icon in Benoit Blanc, in the style of Jessica Fletcher (R.I.P. the great Angela Lansbury, making an appearance in the film in one of her last roles), Columbo, Monk, Sherlock Holmes, Hercule Poirot, Miss Marple and others. (As a side-note, I watched this movie a second time with my SO, and he was the one who caught that Hugh Grant's character and Benoit are married. I thought Hugh was his butler or assistant, like a Batman and Alfred situation!) And, of course, Janelle Monáe playing as two (or rather three) characters was likely one of her most intricate film performances thus far. #KnivesOut --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/nancygandcorryg/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/nancygandcorryg/support

"[Set in England in 1980] EMPIRE OF LIGHT is a 2022 British romantic drama film written and directed by Sam Mendes. The film stars Olivia Colman, Micheal Ward, Monica Dolan, Tom Brooke, Tanya Moodie, Hannah Onslow, Crystal Clarke, Toby Jones, and Colin Firth." - Wikipedia I would say that EMPIRE OF LIGHT is not what you would expect. It starts off seemingly only focused on one subject, but blossoms into a story about two people who manage to grow through different but nevertheless similar experiences. Hilary (Olivia Colman) and Stephen (Micheal Ward) almost couldn't be any different. She's a middle-aged White woman dealing with sexual harassment on the job. Stephen is a bright, young Black man with his whole future ahead of him. Yet through a shared feeling of being abused and outcast, they build something of a relationship, albeit temporary, that changes them. It's a lovely story--with some hints of HAROLD AND MAUDE--a carefully crafted visual love letter to film, and a sympathetic portrayal of the struggles of living in a world that often refuses to acknowledge the pain, both physical and mental, of "outsiders". I was glad to see that it went more in depth about the experience of racism and understanding it from multiple points of view, rather than simply having Stephen be a one-dimensional symbol for Hilary's growth. While there is growth from her experiences with Stephen, it's mutual and is more about the ways in which shared emotions can impact each person in unexpected ways. I also enjoyed the cinematic composition of the film as much as the symbolic changes in Hilary's style of dress as she continued to inwardly transform, particularly near and at the end of the story. In this interview, Sam Mendes talks about the intricate nature of the story and the deeply personal experiences that influenced him during the writing and directing of the movie. #SamMendes #EmpireofLight #OliviaColman #MichealWard --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/nancygandcorryg/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/nancygandcorryg/support

One of the beautiful things about CAUSEWAY is that in the pacing you can see the tendrils of human feeling and connection forming. The silence between interactions is full in a way that hints at the depth of the inner worlds of Lynsey (Jennifer Lawrence) and James (Brian Tyree Henry), two people who find each other through their traumas. I was pleasantly surprised, as I expected this film to more or less be a depressing romp through a neverending land of sadness - which certainly has its merits in cinema and storytelling. That's what I emotionally and intellectually prepared for. However, it's quite the opposite and, frankly, I loved it for that. It deftly tells an in-depth story of loss and recovery, but without leaving an overall feeling of heavy despair (which, of course, can sometimes be excellent in a story). As in most relationships, their journey learning about one another is layered and it gets peeled back slowly throughout the course of the film. To the point where I believed it would end differently. There didn't seem to be enough time to fully bring in the ending at which the rest of the story hinted. Yet that is another thing the movie does exceedingly well - putting a great deal into a small amount of time without it feeling overcrowded, desperate, or like it's still missing something. In this interview Brian and Jennifer talk about the bond their characters develop and the meaning that audiences can get from the film, and more. Interview with Director Reginald Hudlin, SIDNEY Documentary

This documentary was so thought-provoking for me, about how mentally healthy perspectives at a young age can contribute to shaping a person's life. That might be an odd (partial) takeaway, given the richness of Sidney Poitier's life. But while watching the film, that is one of the aspects I heavily keyed into. While, clearly, not the only factor, I ruminated about how much of who he was stemmed from that one fact. Naturally, there's a lot that went into his life and the project, as he had an extensive career and life that touched many people. But there are a few moments that stood out to me the most. When he talked about how he was raised and the fact that being considered “less than” was not a factor for him growing up because there were only two White people living on Cat Island, Bahamas, where he was raised before moving back to Florida at 15. People were just people. There were no Jim Crow laws, covert or overt racism influencing how he saw himself or how others saw him. Though as a teen he was developing a habit if getting into trouble before moving to the US, it was interesting to see how the seeds of his later character were potentially already there. Of course, we know that both nature and nurture are factors in development, and that is also as clear in his case as in any other with different upbringings from his. But it was interesting to see how things developed for him without being born into and potentially heavily influenced by all the minutiae of systemic oppression of that time, even with being born into financial poverty. So in coming to the United States, he didn't understand the rules and conducted himself as such. I've often wondered about and talked about the ways in which some of the best parts of people's core personalities develop without the influence of others and without oppression. While it is unquestionably possible to overcome damage done by oppression, as I watched the documentary I thought about how his persistence and good nature was a throughline, and how those natural inclinations were nurtured in his youth before arriving in the United States. (It was good to see how the joyful prediction given when he was a baby came to pass.) And as an actor, he broke down barriers and contributed to showing the world it was possible for Black people to not only be considered equal, but also extraordinary. He was a man of respect and integrity, not out of a want for approval, but because that is how he saw himself and that is how those natural core aspects of himself were allowed to develop before he ever crossed paths with Jim Crow and other designs of racial oppression. Not only did he have a natural talent, but he worked hard to cultivate his skills as an entertainer. One of the joys of the documentary is seeing the history of his friendships with other entertainers and actors like Harry Belafonte, and how they all persisted despite the racism thrown at them. Overall, it's a grand historical piece of work and more than worth the watch. This series is a must watch! Created by Raamla Mohamed and produced by Kerry Washington and Raamla, among others, the show adds another fabulous Black woman lawyer to the pantheon that includes Oliva Pope herself. Jax (Emayatzy Corinealdi) is great at her job, but is having a less stellar time balancing her complicated love life. Not that she's not having her fun, but whereas she's clear on what she wants and doesn't want, her wants and the wants of the men in her life don't always mesh well. On top of that, she has taken on a case that might bleed over into the rest of her life and cause an entirely new set of problems. The show is highly recommended, and scenes flow effortlessly from one to the next. It's fast-paced and examines complex issues like racism, relationship dynamics, and the justice system and wraps them into an entertaining series that grabs attention from the start. As much as it is about the drug trade, it's also about family and music and the struggles that come with all three. One thing that stood out to me about this excellent series is the attention to detail with the time period. Several times while watching it - I had memories of owning, or people I knew owning - pieces of clothing and jewelry of that era. It was incredibly realistic, and puts into perspective just how much things have changed in that respect over the years. But some things never change, and concerning the relationships on the show that is also an aspect that pulls one in while watching. The conflicts between family members, the revelations, lies, loyalty, backstabbing. All things that are as relatable today as they were hundreds and thousands of years ago. #ZaweAshton and #SopeDirisu star in this romantic comedy-drama set in 1800s #England, and it's such a feel-good movie where everybody wins. Things are set into motion when Julia (Zawe) fails to meet Mr. Malcolm's (Sope) list of requirements in a marriage partner. Furious, she enlists her childhood friend, Selina (Freida Pinto), in a plot to humiliate him with a false romance. But things backfire when the fake romance turns very real. From the start, it's difficult not to like most of these flawed characters who are at times silly but also endearing in one way or another. Despite her machinations, Julia is ultimately not a bad person and is deserving of love. The same can be said of Mr. Malcolm. I was ready to despise Julia and her childish plot, but Zawe brings such a girly warmth, strength and innocence to the character that it's difficult not to like her anyway and eventually root for her to find her own love amongst the convoluted courtship of the day. Sope and Selina are also excellent in the awkward and impassioned courtship. Selina's intelligence and honesty (as far as her views are concerned) lead Jeremy to question himself and his rigid nature. They balance each other in a way, and the journey is interesting to see. One of the best things about the movie, I must add, is the great diversity and having Black and POC characters as leads in a story that is both a period piece and a universal story that anyone can relate to. #mrmalcolmslist is available on streaming at #amazonstudios and #appletvplus among others. Are you #KillingIt? That's a question that seems to be on a lot of minds these days, with the advancements in social media and entrepreneurship. People are expected to be bossing up 24/7, no days off. On the surface, there's nothing wrong with achievement and being your own boss. But, as pointed out in the interview, by an average of the numbers, all people can't always win at that. The show is a hilarious, and insightful, look at that culture and mindset, and how it can try to diminish the basic principles of human decency. There's a sad but funny scene in which #ClaudiaODoherty character, Jillian, (one of the sweetest characters in the series) lies about her living and financial situation in order to not be labeled a "loser" by a seemingly nice (but actually a jerk) guy she likes. The group dynamic is one where the people she thought were friendly start bashing people that have her living situation, and she feels forced to fit in. It's an interesting scene that takes a sharp turn, creating almost a cognitive dissonance between how decent they seem vs. how shallow they really are. The show, starring #CraigRobinson, takes many interesting turns, showing the struggles of trying to make it when so many things can go awry. At the same time, it questions what it actually takes (and at what cost to conscience) to make it in a world that doesn't care if you lose, how or why; a world that only rewards winning. (There's also an interesting irony/metaphor to the fact that the contest in the show involves "killing snakes" to win the money - but also maybe becoming a human one in the process.) If you haven't seen #jurassicworld, see it! It's a lot of fun, and while it's been promoted as the last in the series, let's hope that's not the case. For one, it introduces some new characters that would be wonderful for expansion - one being Kayla Watts (Dewanda Wise). I was intrigued by her character's potential backstory, after seeing her behavior in the movie, particularly sparked by her initial encounter with Maisie (#IsabellaSermon). She becomes another hero in the film, and the buddy chemistry between her and Owen (#ChrisPratt) suggests there could be more to the franchise - also involving Ramsay (#MamoudouAthie). Interview with P-VALLEY Creator and Cast, Katori Hall, Nicco Annan, Elarica Johnson, Brandee Evans, Shannon Thornton, J. Alphonse Nicholson, and Parker Sawyers #PValley is a popular series about the lives of strippers and the other people in a fictional town (Chucalissa) in Mississippi. Uncle Clifford is the house mother that runs The Pynk, the club where much of the show initially takes place. While strippers Autumn, Keyshawn and Mercedes, as well as the bouncer Diamond, are central to the show, Clifford and his relationships - particularly with rapper Lil Murda - also take center stage. In the interview, the cast and creator talk about flack they've gotten for the show, as well as the fact that many people are supportive of it. It's a great show, with fantastic art and characters, and heart - not "just a show about strippers." ~ Edit: It's not in the interview, but as I was telling Nicco (Uncle Clifford) after, the relationship between Clifford and Murda was/is adorable. (Until a certain point) it's healthy and has a natural ease of just two people who genuinely care about each other that's great to see! #loveislove ~ While #PrideMonth was officially last month, it's a celebration all year 'round! The new #TheEqualizer starring #QueenLatifah and #ToryKittles takes the tried-and-true detective "man with specific skills saving people" formula and gives it a new twist in more ways than one. Aside from the change of having a woman as the person with the specific skills, the show also focuses on a number of issues facing the Black community that are often overlooked. As the nation reels from another terrorist attack against Black people yet again, it's important to note how entertainment/art fields can also creatively tackle these situations and bring to light the history of covert and overt oppression and terrorizing of Black and other POC and marginalized groups. Through that, in part, education and change has been possible - as we've seen through the centuries. In this interview, Tory and Joe talk about the dynamic in the show and the hope it brings to audiences. In one episode mentioned, Tory's character Dante confronts a dirty, racist cop (spoilers). In another, #JadaPinkettSmith guest stars as Jessie, a friend and professional thief Robyn hires to steal back a multi-million dollar personal portrait stolen from the family of victims of the Tulsa Massacre. What better avatar than a person with multiple personalities? You get as many times the avatar for the price of one! At least that's what the deity Khonshu believes, and he's not wrong. #MoonKnight is one hell of a entertaining, great show. About the only thing disappointing about it is that it's only six episodes long (so far. Here's hoping there's a second season). The last episode aired on May the 4th (be with you). Marc Spector (#OscarIsaac) and Steven Grant inhabit the same body. But only one of them knows that - until Steven "wakes up" in the middle of a field with assassins trying to kill him. Soon after, he learns about "his" other very full life, including being married to Layla El-Faouly (#MayCalamawy). It's a fascinating series that uses the vastness of Egyptian mythology as a backdrop. The cast of characters is stellar, including #EthanHawke and #FMurrayAbraham, who are also delightful and legendary. I don't want to do too many spoilers here, because 1/3 of the fun is going along on the ride! (Wink, wink, for those who already know.) If you've been following for any amount of time, you know that not only have I worked professionally in the field, but I also love some good fictionalized horror! And #From is no exception to that rule! This show is balls-to-the-wall scary, good fun! And it also has a heavy dose of humanity. If you're not interested for the monsters (omg, how can you not be) then you'll be with it for the mysteries, the science (yes, there's that too) and the community. #HaroldPerrineau is a perfect choice for this show, and not just because of his role in #Lost. (Let's just say now, while there are some similarities, this show is vastly different and far scarier.) One of the first times I remember seeing Perrineau perform was in the #BazLuhrmann rendition of #RomeoandJuliet. To this day, my SO and I rave about it regularly, particularly Perrineau's turn as Mercutio. It's one of the defining movies of my childhood! As in #Lost, #Oz, #TheMatrixReloaded and Revolutions, #Claws, #TheBestMan and anything else he's in, he just knows how to create a great, relatable yet intense performance. Along with that, the rest of the cast also has a fantastic on-screen chemistry and they're in sync, which makes for a series that anyone would be hungry for! (Literally - I finished the 10 episodes so fast, I kept opening and closing the show's page like a refrigerator door, hoping more would appear out of thin air. Much like the people in the town!) I liked it so much that the only thing that disappointed me was the death of one of the main characters (no spoilers). There's a lot to say about this show. One of the things that I'm glad they cleared early on was a rundown of what it's (likely) not. They're not dead, for one. Another is that I was right about a couple of major things that happen (which were not easy to figure out, but it was definitely fun). If you know, you know! At first, one might think that #61ststreet is another "Black trauma show" (something that's not inherently bad within reason, though at times difficult to watch. But that's a complex conversation for another time). However, it's not. When I started watching the series, one of my first joking thoughts was, "Uh, oh. Time to put up the emotional barriers. Repeat after me - 'it's just a show, it's just a show.'" Naturally, given the type of series it is, it also deals with real life situations. But it's also a hopeful series that shows something we don't often get to see. A fictionalized and uplifting behind-the-scenes of the lives of people creating a way. Not just in everyday life, but in politics and justice. And, of course, there's some shady dealings and mystery, too. All in all, it's engaging, as much for the writing as the acting. The legendary #CourtneyBVance (big ups to #LovecraftCountry) and #AunjanueEllis (#KingRichard - what, what!) lead the cast with sincere acting that ties everything together. 'Catch the Fair One' is not just a story about human trafficking. It's also about the hardships of Native American women who go missing and/or are abused. The suffering of these women is often ignored by a mainstream that denies their dignity and existence. When POC go missing and are trafficked and/or killed, most turn a blind eye. Sometimes this even happens within the Native American community - largely due to systemic oppression, poverty and self-hatred. When Kaylee goes looking for her missing sister, it is primarily without support. Despite her boxing career, she is low on money. Due to a habit that she got clean from, her mother - who runs a successful casino - does not offer funds and may also blame Kaylee. What follows is a harrowing and action-packed movie about the lengths she goes to to bring her sister back home and exact justice on the scumbags that took her. In addition to her acting and boxing, Kali is also a long-time advocate of the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls (MMWIG) movement. #JosefKubotaWladyka #KaliReis #IFCFilms --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/nancygandcorryg/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/nancygandcorryg/support

Interview with W. Kamau Bell, WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT COSBY

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 25, 2022 7:21

Whew! This one was a doozy. In this interview, Kamau talks about how we can dismantle the myths that narcissistic predators like Cosby and, to a lesser but no less egomaniacal extent, Joss Whedon use to endear themselves and mask their abuses from the larger public. In the case of Whedon, because his actions (that we've been made aware of to-date) are not criminal, but certainly vile, there may be a sense for some that redemption is possible with genuine change and atonement. However, as we've seen, such types rarely either believe or care that they are in the wrong. Apologies (if they happen) are false, and in most cases they simply double-down - as we've seen with the most recent interview from Joss Whedon, in which he sounded more like an extreme right-wing racist and misogynist conservative trying to dismiss the claims of a "silly woman" who speaks English as a second language, the "aggressive Black" and others who called out his abuses as "overly-sensitive" or liars. And in the case of Cosby, there simply is no redemption. While watching this series (which I described as a movie because I did pretty much watch all of the episodes at once) I, surprisingly, cried - thankfully I did not during the interview because I was worried I would. I believe I cried because anyone who has dealt with abuse from narcissists/sociopaths knows that often the egos of such predators are so reliant on controlling and emotionally destroying their targets - whether friends, family, associates or partners. In their eyes, *not* having at least a few others to control and abuse is like death to them - so they are heavily dependant on that and very often do not simply stop of their own accord, even when they've been found out and consequences are imminent (as in the case of Cosby). And, too often, as stated in the documentary, "masked predators" in entertainment often transfer the good feelings and fond memories we have of their work to themselves, making it easier to discount the harm they do. It's an eye-opening series on how someone like that uses the trust built through the power that entertainment provides, in order to "market" themselves as largely "safe" people and cover the terribly rotten human beings they truly are at their core. Like many people, I held on to doubt for a long time, aided in part by clipped and summarized (and at times inaccurate) reports that spun the words of the women who came forward. But it was Cosby's own words and admissions that erased the scraps of doubt overriding instinctual belief. I don't have any personal experience with hard drugs, so in researching quaaludes it became even more apparent that the descriptions given by his victims were clearly his intent when purchasing/getting prescriptions for the drug. Unfortunately, entertainment more so than other professions allows predators to imitate the images of decent people in order to fool people with a sense of (false) trust and safety, as described by many in the series. And, unfortunately, there has often been a culture amongst men/sickeningly predatorily-minded people that encourages using women (usually those seen as having less status than them in some way, so that if something is brought to light it can be easily dismissed) as a dumping ground for their unprocessed emotional and/or sexual bs. In the interviews, Kamau details ways such "traditions" and myths in entertainment can be ended. 'The Tragedy of Macbeth' is a dreamlike rendition of #Macbeth that simultaneously feels so real and present. In this interview, #CoreyHawkins - who plays Macduff - talks about working on the amazing fight scene with Denzel Washington, whose essence and performance is godlike as the doomed Macbeth. . . Personal note: 'Macbeth' has long been one of my favorite of Shakespeare's plays, and seeing this was an almost mythical experience. Several years ago, I met #DenzelWashington along with #DebbieAllen during an unexpected audition for #GreysAnatomy. Working as an extra, I was called for a special casting, of which I knew little about except the location and a few details. Ironically, much like in 'Macbeth', while waiting to be called in, another woman waiting told us "not to freak out" but that we would be meeting with Denzel. Well, for me, I went from being completely calm and nonchalant about the audition to being entirely nervous! When I walked in the room with the group, I could barely speak. The essences of both Debbie and Denzel seemed to fill up the room like the titans of the entertainment industry they are. Denzel silently, professionally assessed us, while Debbie asked us about ourselves. They both asked us questions and were friendly and professional throughout. Needless to say, I didn't get the part, but it was a great experience! And in the years since, I've wondered how my reaction might have been different if I didn't know beforehand. And that is one of the quintessential questions of 'Macbeth'. How might things have turned out if he didn't receive the information from the witches? For Macbeth, he goes from being a loyal subject of the king, to battling with a newfound ravenous desire for the throne, backed by the designs of Lady Macbeth. #TheTragedyofMacbeth is an enthralling experience as the machinations play out, leading to the inevitable conclusion! . #JoelCohen #FrancesMcDormand #KathrynHunter #BrendanGleeson --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/nancygandcorryg/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/nancygandcorryg/support

A note on the very personal impact of this film for me: In the interview, I also speak about my own experience of being placed into a "special" school in the deep South. Until watching the documentary and asking the question, I didn't realize not only how much that happened to other Black children, but how incomprehensible such cruelty is even looking back on it as an adult. While I did not have behavioral or educational issues, I was placed in the school for one simple act. A White girl in my class had a real rabbit fur coat, and it was in our classroom closet. And I remember thinking of the fact that I rarely saw real fur coats, and it would be "cool" if my Barbie doll had one. So I tugged to pull a tiny bit of fur off. Little did I know, the different color patches were not connected, and I ended up pulling off an entire patch, exposing the coat material underneath. Another kid saw me, told the teacher. There was no fight, no argument, no yelling and screaming, etc. I don't remember being punished in class (I'm pretty sure I wasn't), but either later that day or sometime over the following weekend, a teacher I didn't have came to my home. I was playing in the backyard and he told me (quite happily, I remember) that I wouldn't be returning to school and I was being sent to a different one. He went inside; I was scared, but I also wasn't sure I believed him. The worse part about that is he was Black and, as I remember, absolutely despised all of the few Black students in the school. The other teacher, who was White, maybe felt bad, because I remember that she had the class make cards for me to get well and get back to class soon (I ended up contracting chicken pox at the "special" school). Soon after that, I went to live with my dad and stepmom, both of whom were extremely encouraging about education. To make a long story short, it was an experience that I thought was largely rare, and I had no idea about  the schools in the UK and the commonalities there. Both in the United States and abroad, the educational system has at times been used deliberately to disenfranchise Black and other POC students, as well as lower-economic White students. From poor educational practices to harsher punishments for similar acts, to making entire "special" school systems, the same things continue to go on even today under a different face. I was lucky because I was taken out of that situation and my parents prioritized education both in and outside of school. But not everyone has had that. While sharing that was unplanned and unexpected for me, it is a testament to the power of the documentary that shows how UK activists, teachers and parents stood up for not only their own children, but future generations that otherwise may not have had a chance. #BBCOne #AmazonPrime  #MaisieBarrett #WaveneyBushell #BernardCoard --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/nancygandcorryg/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/nancygandcorryg/support
