One of my favorite roles with our church has been as a lector, which means "one who reads" in Latin, and it involves getting to read one of the Sunday mass readings. I thought it would be fun to bring this to the podcast in a series called "Lectio," or "reading." Every Sunday mass, there are three readings: Old Testament, epistles and the gospel. I'll be syncing up Lectio episodes this season with the first Sunday of the month's mass reading, so the week before mass you can be ruminating on one of the passages to come. For this Lectio, we will be looking at the first reading, Exodus 16:2-4, 12-15. Explore A Growing Home more:InstagramBlogFacebook

For this Lectio, I'm going to do something I haven't done before. I'm going to read and unpack the responsorial psalm. I've been wanting to do this for a while because I think there's so much there that adds to the whole liturgy of the Word. For this Sunday's mass, the responsorial psalm comes from Psalm 123. Correction: The first reading that I allude to is from the book of Ezekiel, not Ezra. Explore A Growing Home more:InstagramBlogFacebook

In the Intro to Season 2 episode, I'll be sharing personal highlights from season 1 as well as share what to expect in the upcoming season.
I'm really excited to have Teresa Ku-Borden back on the podcast today. If you haven't already listened, Teresa was on an earlier episode called Art as Outlet and Connection. Teresa is a doctor and mother living in East Los Angeles and serving the community there. She also happens to be my sister-in-law. Today, she is sharing with us what's on her Good List: 4 things, big or small, that are bringing joy to small parts of her life. I got this idea from Tsh Oxenrider and her podcast formerly called The Good List. What I love about the Good List, as a mom of young kids, is that it reminds me that incorporating small things or moments that bring joy to my day, can make a really big difference. I'm always inspired by hearing others share what these things are for them, it helps spark ideas for me.Previous Episode with Teresa Art as Outlet and Connection with Teresa Ku-Borden Things MentionedAeropress CoffeeYou Matter, by Christian RobinsonHamiltonLiberated TogetherFind Teresa here: Instagram Voices Rising: Women of Color Finding and Restoring Hope in the City Explore A Growing Home more: Instagram Blog Facebook
This episode's Lectio is from the first Sunday of Lent, the first reading. Lectio means "reading" in Latin. I decided to release this episode earlier in the week to line up with Ash Wednesday, the first day of Lent 2021. I had been thinking a lot about what it means to do Lent during a pandemic, when life is already hard. When browsing upcoming Sunday readings for a Lectio, I was drawn to the story of Noah. Upon study, I was completely floored by the connection of God's covenant with Noah to Jesus' suffering and death, and what this all means for Lent. If you want to follow along, the passage is Genesis 9:8-15. This week's episode is all about food! I'm chatting with Bonnie Hui-Callahan, working mom of 4. We cover all the bases: breakfast, lunch, dinner, and of course, snacks too. Bonnie is Chinese-American and married to her Italian/Irish-American college sweetheart, lover of all things boba and red wine, and a pharmacist-by-training. She currently resides in South Orange County, CA and works at a local pharmacy school helping students get the hands-on, out-of-classroom training they need to graduate as practice-ready pharmacists. She recently started “The Clinician-Leader”, a digital course and virtual coaching business focused on healthcare leadership, with her father-in-law, a physician-executive and retired Army Colonel with over 30 years of leadership experience. While this has kept her busy, she has loved dedicating her creative energy towards a passion project focused on training up clinician-leaders in the midst of this pandemic (and beyond). If you're interested in hearing more about The Clinician-Leader, join her and her father-in-law in their first virtual, live bootcamp coming up Feb 22-24! www.theclinicianleader.com/Bootcamp Registration open now for the virtual Bootcamp (2/22-24)Listeners can use the discount code: PRESIDENTSDAY for half off (valid thru 2/20)Follow The Clinician Leader Instagram FacebookLinked InExplore A Growing Home more: Instagram Blog Facebook
My husband Pat and I talk about raising bilingual kids. Whether or not you are thinking of raising dual language learners, what you will find in this episode is some open sharing of the process that Pat and I took as a couple to make this significant family decision. Investing in their Chinese language abilities has become one of the foundational elements for us in intentionally raising our kids with a strong ethnic identity. We cover a lot of ground in the podcast, including sharing our own language backgrounds, the second-generation experience, why it was important for us that our kids learn Chinese, and how we are practically making it happen. While it's the priest who reads the gospel at mass, I chose to do the gospel reading for this particular Lectio episode. In addition to reading the passage, I'll also be doing some Bible study and reflection. Bible study and teaching was a big part of my job in full-time campus ministry before having kids, and it was one of my favorite parts. I'm really looking forward to weaving these passions into this podcast space. If you want to follow along with a Bible, the passage is Mark 1:29-39. "First, internal or spiritual transformation had to happen for me to become a creative and to own that identity." Chanté Griffin is a writer, actress, and advocate, and I know her personally as a good friend, spiritual mentor, and Joey's godmother. Every time I talk to Chanté, I am inspired, empowered and energized. Nurturing creative energy is the framework for this conversation. From there, we explore topics including the broader definition of being a creative, the first step to learn how to listen to God's voice and how to interact with transition and life interruptions. Also interwoven is Chanté's journey from full-time Christian ministry work to full-time creative.
