International Zero Waste Day was just celebrated on the 30th of March, with the aim of promoting sustainable consumption and production patterns, supporting a societal shift towards circularity, and raising awareness about how zero-waste initiatives contribute to the advancement of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. According to the UN, the waste sector contributes to the triple planetary crisis of climate change, biodiversity and nature loss, and pollution. It's said that zero-waste initiatives can encourage sound waste management and minimise and prevent waste, helping to address the planetary crisis, protect the environment, enhance food security, and improve human health and well-being. Here on Earth Matters, we've had the privilege to speak to several zero-waste practitioners, who have shared their own journeys of transforming their lives and consumption patterns, and going as ‘zero-waste' as possible. In this look-back episode, we hear from Bea Johnson, the French-born US-based environmental activist, author and motivational speaker, cited as the founder of the zero waste movement, who is best known for reducing her family's annual trash down to a pint and for authoring the book Zero Waste Home: The Ultimate Guide to Simplifying Your Life by Reducing Your Waste. We then hear from Zero Waste Malaysia's Khor Sue Yee (Co-founder and Director) and Jasreel Lim (Head of Finance & Business Development), who discuss Trashpedia, which is dubbed the ultimate guide to waste segregation and sustainable living.Image credit: ShutterstockSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Zibby interviews actress and screenwriter Jana Savage about Wildflower, a beautiful coming-of-age film that follows Bea Johnson from birth to graduation as she navigates life with two neurodiverse parents, starring Kiernan Shipka, Alexandra Daddario, and Charlie Plummer. Jana describes her path to screenwriting (she acted for many years prior) and then shares how she, Matt Smukler (the director), and the Morning Moon production team turned a difficult, real-life story into a poignant, darkly humorous, and joyful movie. She also talks about the writers' strike, her favorite author, her next few projects (one is a sequel to an early-2000s movie with a bit of a cult following…), and her best advice for aspiring screenwriters. You can now stream Wildflower on Hulu, or buy/rent on Apple TV, Amazon Video, Google Play Movies, and YouTube. That big awards show that cast a long shadow over the whole movie business has come and finally gone. And yes, we'll talk about the Oscar telecast. We watched it. You might not have. Maybe you did. But now there are finally some new movies to talk about. Neil Rosen starts us off with "Wildflower." It's a coming-of-age film that follows Bea Johnson from birth to graduation as she navigates life with an intellectually disabled parent and an extended family who can't quite agree on the best way to help. That segues nicely into "Campions" in which a former minor-league basketball coach (Woody Harrelson) is ordered by the court to manage a team of players with intellectual disabilities.Bill Bregoli has something completely different - "65"which stars Adam Driver as an astronaut who crash lands on a mysterious planet only to discover he's not alone. And Bill McCuddy fills us in on "The Ritual Killer" which stars Morgan Freeman and its about a detective on the verge of retirement who teams with a professor of African Studies to track down a serial killer who is performing the ancient black magic practice of Muti. We've also got "The Quiet Girl." It's an Irish film about a quiet, neglected girl who is sent away from her dysfunctional family to live with foster parents for the summer. And we also look at Th New York Times Presents: Sin Eater: The Crimes of Anthony Pellicano." It's a two-part series on Hollywood's dirtiest P.I. Anthony Pellicano who is out of prison--and he's talking. Previously unseen evidence raises questions about why so few Hollywood stars faced consequences when Pellicano was exposed. It's time to forget about all those movies and shows you've been hearing about for the past 6 months and find something new. Do you have too many pairs of shoes or old gadgets lying around your home? 你家有太多双鞋或旧小玩意吗?I'm sure many of us have too much stuff that we don't really use and when it starts getting out of hand, it really is time to do some spring cleaning to de-clutter our lives. However, deciding which items to get rid of can be tricky especially if you are materialistic, believing that physical possessions are the most important thing in life. Also, some people are sentimental about letting go of their personal property. But if you haven't got room in your house to move, it's time to evaluate what is really important to you and decide what are your prized possessions and what is just junk. Instead of just chucking it away and filling up landfill sites, items could be recycled or given to a charity to re-sell. You could also make some money by using websites where people are willing to pay for second-hand goods. Some people have taken a minimalist approach, deliberately trying to keep life simple. Bea Johnson, author of Zero Waste Home, has done this. She says "we've asked really true questions, and evaluated every single thing that we have. There is nothing that we overlooked. I even came to look at my vegetable peeler for example and asked myself, 'do I really need that vegetable peeler'?" 比如,我甚至看到我的蔬菜削皮器并会问自己,‘我真的需要这个吗?”Of course, if you're a shopaholic or a fashion-victim it's hard to stop buying and shopping online makes purchasing stuff very easy. James Wallman is a writer and journalist – he questions what we actually need. He says "I'm not anti-stuff – stuff is good. I'm anti too much stuff and I'm anti the wrong stuff. Don't go out and buy that labelled good that you think is going to make people think something more of you. That's not going to make you happy." This sounds like good advice. It's good to take stock of what we have and what we really need. But there are still some things I just can't face parting company with; my CD collection, even though I now download my music, and my childhood teddy bear. What about you – have you got something that you just can't throw away? 词汇表getting out of hand 失去控制spring cleaning 彻底打扫,大扫除de-clutter 整理,清除杂物get rid of 扔掉、丢弃materialistic 追求物质的,拜金的sentimental 感情用事的,多愁善感的prized possessions 珍贵的财产、物品junk 垃圾、没用的东西chucking it away 把它扔掉landfill sites 垃圾填埋场recycled 回收利用的minimalist 简约主义的overlooked 忽略了,没有考虑到的shopaholic 购物狂fashion-victim 盲目追求时尚的人labelled 贴了(名牌)标签的take stock 仔细考虑,作出判断parting company 与…分离

Hilary describes her commitments as achieving some success and some failure, but learned from both.We start with her personal experiences and memories of ice skating and cross country skiing as a child leading to her sometimes painful lessons today. More than just ice skating again, she took lessons with her child. Listen to her for the lesson and why it was painful, but I'll share that she learned to wear a helmet. She also talked about driving less, which led to what she could do with her community not to accept that not driving has to be hard, but how to improve the situation. She talked about eating less meat, which I heard creating more connection within family. From the personal, we moved to the systemic. As the president of an august institution and connected to peers at peer organizations, she can influence within Allegheny and among university presidents and across academia. It's nice to talk about change and sustainability. It's nice to change institutions. But she points out, everyone sees what you do and your personal behavior affects others.I don't think this episode is the last we'll hear of Dr. Link.

Let's talk fatherhood and sustainability."Josh, you don't understand since you don't have kids, it's impossible to avoid producing waste," people keep saying. Since they say other things I've done is impossible before learning I've done them, I expect they're making excuses and that I could solve parenthood problems too. Without kids I haven't solved their problems (though guest Bea Johnson has in her family of four that produces less landfill waste than I do), but I expect I could.Balint became a father since he was a guest. We decided to record a new challenge for him as a father. The first episode we just spontaneously started recording, so we didn't set up microphones. I decided to trade catching the moment for sound quality. In the second half we recorded with our good microphones.Since some podcast guests have stopped their challenge shortly after their second episode, I'm gratified to hear a guest continuing it forever and building on it. You could say maybe he's continuing it because it fits with minimalist values he already developed. I contend that sustainability resonates with some values in everyone. He didn't start with an advantage. He found one anybody could. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

You promise yourself you're going to get more organized. That's until the next time you can't find something and realize you've actually done nothing to get more organized. We've all been there. Fortunately, we can learn how to save time by organizing our business and life! Meet Rebekah Saltzman. She's a professional organizer. Rebekah comes from a fashion design background. Her life changed when she read “Zero Waste Home” by Bea Johnson. The book made her realize she wasn't making the world a better place, and inspired her to make a difference in other people's lives. She quit her job, started her own business, and embarked on a journey to help other people become more organized. Rebekah is anti-clutter and pro-environment. She has a beautiful outlook on life and I'm really happy she agreed to appear on The Alkimia Success Show! Some of the main topics we discussed during the interview include the following: 3:15 – Everybody is so much happier when they have less stuff. 9:33 – How to break the cycle of consumerism. 12:40 – Be grateful for the things you have. 23:50 – Rebekah's advice on how to get your family involved. It was great talking to Rebekah. She's an amazing lady! If you want to get in contact with her, you can reach her through her website balaganbegone.com (“belagan” is the Hebrew word for chaos or mess). You can also email her on rebekah[at]balaganbegone.com or Rebekah[at]rebekahsaltzman.com. She has a really great Facebook group you can join. Just search Facebook for Organizing in Israel. Here are the notes I read this episode from:People keep acting like I'm different, that they have to balance things that I don't when acting on the environment. So I'll share a recent decision I made. People I tell have sounded intrigued and delighted to hear it so I'll share with you.First sensed hairline retreating at 19.Not much for maybe a decade following, I don't remember.Maybe 10 years ago started using minoxidil.Don't know if works or not, but used as insurance. Not insanely expensive.Tested on thinning in back, so even less sure if it works.Over the past few years noticed it becoming my greatest plastic consumption.Thought more about stopping.Even stopping flying was reversible. Never decided to stop forever, just kept finding that it improved my life not to fly. Constraints breed creativity.Stopping minoxidil not reversible. Might not do anything. Might go bald. I don't want to go bald. I like my hair. But I'm pitting purely my vanity against reducing plastic pollution.Last bottle of last 3 month supply was running low. Kept thinking about it. Risk balding, but maybe no difference.Last American president elected bald was Eisenhower. Have to beat Hitler to get elected. Women complain they get judged by appearance, but men do too.Felt helpless, yet also recognize the alternative is simply to live with my genes. What chemical shitstorm is in that stuff anyway? But the bottom line was every time I've chosen to live by my environmental values, it's improved my life. I used to have faith, but faith is belief without evidence. Between avoiding packaged food, avoiding flying, picking up garbage daily, plogging, all of which I thought would worsen my life, they've all improved it.So I made a deal with myself to flip a coin. Heads I'd keep it. If every 3 months I flipped, eventually I'd have to end.I started making deals with myself -- just get to 50 years old. It's so little plastic compared to everyone else. Just one more time. I found out you can buy the raw ingredients on Alibaba. What if I found a great price? Rite Aid had almost half off online. Another place even lower prices, but then more packaging. So I flipped the coin. Tails on the first try. I made a rule only flip a coin when I can't decide any other way, then never reverse that decision or it undoes the value of coin toss's decisiveness. Still I started bargaining with myself. Are you getting how hard I found this decision? I was deciding in the moment a choice to affect me possibly for the remaining several decades of my life.I didn't refill. I still went to Rite Aid intending to buy another box, against the coin toss, but the low price was only online. I was going to break my rule, but didn't because of circumstance.Within a day I could feel new breeze on my forehead. Maybe coincidence, but maybe I'll end up bald in a few months. Maybe it will recede a bit and stop. Who knows?I don't see a path to this choice improving my life, but I'm going with it. Talk about your first-world problems, right? But everyone goes through similar decisions too. Should I buy the coffee on the way to work in the disposable cup? Should I take a subway or shared ride?We all do mental gymnastics to rationalize behavior we know is against our principles. I do. My difference today versus me years ago is that I've moved my balance toward stewardship. Each time I do, I find it improves my life. Before long I find role models beyond where I am. I learn from them, for example Bea Johnson, whose family of four produces collectively less trash than I do.The world will see the results. Some relevant posts of mine:Choose easier by visualizing choices, part IChoose easier by visualizing choices, part IIWhy are decisions hard? How to ChooseHow to decide among close options See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Menstrual cycle eco alternatives, like menstrual cups, and reusable pads and menstrual panties. So yes, we got real. We go into the bummer of the amount of concrete we as a species use and how that is not the coolest thing ever and why. Alternative building materials like cob, adobe, bamboo, wood, and our meh of air-crete. How recycling isn't very efficient and that is also not one of those things you can assume is done right because it really needs soooooo much improvement it isn't funny. There are efforts starting like Precious Plastics ( https://preciousplastic.com) which are really cool for people to open source ideas and start getting involved with their hands and minds.

This Week's Guest Michael Hanchett Hanson - deconstructing creativityWhat is creativity - It's a big question. I've worked in the creative industries all my life, yet I've never considered creativity to from a psychological and developmental perspective until I sat down with this weeks guest Michael Hanchett Hanson - author and founder and director of the Masters Concentration in Creativity and Cognition program at Teachers College, Columbia University,In part one of the interview, we cover the impact of Michael's upbringing and the dual influence of his mother and father, his mentors and his early ambitions growing up in Texan Bible belt.Michael deconstructs the social, material and temporal components of creativity. We discuss genius, distinctiveness, and exceptionality. Finally, we cover the serendipity in his journey and how he applies creativity in his life.I hope you find value in this vibrant and vigorous exploration of creativity with Michael Hanchett Hanson. The Podcast we Love Joshua Spodek Leadership and The Environment This is a podcast from one of our upcoming guests. Josh is the ultimate renaissance man with an incredible personal journey. We are sharing Josh's interview from 2018 with Bea Johnson, TEDx Speaker and a mother living a zero waste lifestyle for over ten years. Listen to Josh's other podcasts, they are packed with value and insights on leadership and the environment.. We found this online From coal country to solar country When in the midst of a grand transition from fossil fuels to renewables but it still feels we are too reliant on fossil fuel economy. We read this piece in the Atlantic about how in one Colorado county, solar-energy-training classes are helping ease the transition from fossil fuels to renewables and may well fill the economic hole left by the dying coal industry, which sustained the area for more than 120 years. There may be insights and lessons here for other regions and countries working to address what is a global imperative.Recommended to usThe case against contemporary feminism A past guest sent us this exploration of what feminism means in the age of Trump. The New Yorker article sets out two recently published arguments against contemporary feminism that have emerged in near-exact opposition to each other: either feminism has become too strict an ideology or it has softened to the point of uselessness. Both sides make a compelling case. Series of the week College Behind Bars This four-part series streamed on PBS in the US, follows men and women incarcerated in maximum and medium security prisons across New York state over the span of four years, as they attempt to gain college degrees through the Bard Prison Initiative (BPI), one of the most rigorous prison education programs in the U.S.Producer Sarah Botstein states “ We always say we hope the film will raise two really important questions: who in our country should, and does have access to education? And what is prison for? We hope people think about how those two questions intersect with the systemic issues of race and poverty, and what is broken about our...

Here is the text I read from for this post:My environmental role modelsWhy my role models? Because people keep saying what I do is inaccessible. That it's too much or extreme. That they need to balance. Well everyone believes they're balanced. I have to balance too.My difference is that I keep moving toward my values. Instead of letting Americans, the most polluting people in history, be my comparison, I find new role models. It's community. Once you start polluting less, actually putting effort in, not just straws or the latest trendy thing, but based on your passion, you'll find role models and keep doing more to live by your values because you'll like it.Bea JohnsonAuthor of Zero Waste Home, which I read and recommend as well as 4 TEDx talksFamily of four, less than a load per yearMy response to everyone who knee-jerk responds, "Oh, you don't have kids. If you had kids then you'd understand." Well, she has two kids and avoiding garbage brings them together, as it will everyone who tries instead of claiming helplessness. Her book on zero-waste living led me to find new waste to get rid of, including cutting down on mailings. Emailing and calling places to remove me from their lists is satisfying and returns control. Her TEDx talk on why we should recycle less is the first big public statement I know of to avoid recycling as much as possible in favor of not polluting, since recycling is polluting unnecessarily. Of course all living requires polluting, but recycling is closer to full waster than to benign. Her clean home and family camaraderie inspire me.She's been a guest on this podcast and we email periodically.Kris De BergerHis site called Low Tech magazine inspires simple living minimizing relying on fossil fuels. He shows what is possible, especially what we used to do, often easily, that we then replaced with fossil fuels, like how to move 100 ton blocks of stone, growing plants before greenhouses, and many fun things we've traded for a sedentary, polluting lifestyle. You know how it took decades for people to realize building roads created traffic, not relieved it? He finds similar patterns, like how our push for energy security is making us less secure and increasing efficiency often leads to greater total waste. He does what he talks about. For example, he runs a solar-powered server, he installed a shower that uses a fraction of a regular shower. He shows a low energy future is possible and desirable.I invited him to be on the podcast but haven't heard back.Lauren SingerDid a TEDx talk, probably the first I saw of all the people's here so inspired me earlyShe also cites Bea Johnson as a role modelShe was the first person I'd heard of creating a mason jar of landfill waste per year, which enables me not to compare myself with Americans on my waste, which is meaningless because they are about the most trash producing in historyShe went to NYU and students of mine knew her or were connected. I forget the details.I invited her as a guest, but we haven't finished coordinatingShe started a store for products that replace disposable stuff. I've met a couple employees from the time I cooked for 50 people in Brooklyn North Farms with almost nothing to throw away afterRob GreenfieldHis YouTube channel is the best source of his work. Reminds me of MorganSpurlock of Supersize Me.Rob is nearing the end of a year eating only food he grew or foraged. He did a lot of attention-getting stunts to call attention to our culture's waste. This project shows a level of maturity that suggests significantly more to come.He rides his bike a lot. I've considered moving to Orlando to participate, especially when I interviewed Orlando's mayor for this podcast. He's been a guest on this podcast and we email periodically.David GardnerHost of the GrowthBusters podcastBesides running for office, he's one of the only people I know to promote reducing the populationIt's his passion. He's taking on one of our biggest taboos, or sacred cows, which is also the most necessary change necessary to pull out of our mess.It also may be the most misunderstood or overlooked part of our environmental problems.People just assume because the population is increasing less -- not decreasing -- that things will work out.
