Creating Inclusive Environments Through Acceptance Rugare shared a personal story about having an open conversation with his uncle, who is the head of a village in Zimbabwe, about gay rights. They also touched on the potential of technology to provide access to information and resources, which could lead to the tapping of untapped talent pools. What a powerful conversation with one of the women I love most in this world. Be ready to get uncomfortable. Nicole Joshua brings us her voice and her perspective, located at the foot of Table Mountain in Cape Town, South Africa. Do you have a faith that makes room for your discomfort? How do you stay in discomfort? How do you hold room for someone else's changing faith? How do you hold room for your own changing faith? Nicole shares: A Liberating Faith is a faith that gives you a voice. A Liberating Faith allows you to ask the questions. We go deep and far and Nicole gets vulnerable with us, as she shares the compassionate faith she is finding in the feminine image of Mama God. About Nicole: Nicole Joshua had a deep thirst for learning. She completed her Bachelor of Theology in Community Leadership, majoring Biblical studies, at Cornerstone Institute (formerly known as Cornerstone Christian College) in 2011 and then went on to complete her Bachelor of Arts (Honours) degree(cum laude) at the University of the Western Cape in 2012, majoring in Biblical Studies. She also holds a Bachelor of Commerce (Financial Accounting) degree from the University of Cape Town. And in 2016, she completed a certificate in Leadership in Urban Transformation Studies through the University of Pretoria, a course which ultimately led her to embracing her passion for taking what she has learned in Biblical Studies, through academia, into communities. She is a mom to a beautiful daughter, and wife to an incredible husband. Without a doubt, Nicole is passionate social justice, about partnering with God in God's work of redeeming and transforming our world, and she believes that the Bible provides us with narrative framework that shapes our understanding of God and of the work to which God calls us. She is deeply concerned with praxis; i.e. she believes that how one lives out their faith in the world, how one's faith shapes their engagement with their communities, finances, family life, relationships, etc. in ways that bring about healing and transformation, is more important than focusing purely on figuring out the right beliefs. #liberatingfaith #liberation #faith #faithpodcast #progressivechristian

Imogen Thomas and David Peck talk about her new film Emu Runner, social realism, loss and grief, challenging stereotypes, intergenerational trauma, taking more time for others and indigenous rights and cultures in Australia. TrailerEmu Runner is a story about a nine-year-old Indigenous girl, Gem Daniels, who lives in a remote Australian town. As she copes with her mother’s unexpected death, Gem finds solace in the company of a wild emu, unwittingly connecting with her mother’s traditional totem animal. Gem’s obsessive attachment to the emu leads her down a troubled path as she feeds it her school lunches and begins to steal extra food for it. As she spends more and more time with the emu, Gem skips school, attracting the attention of a new social worker in town, Heidi, who is convinced Gem’s family is failing to look after her. In nature the male emu takes on the role of rearing the chicks. With the death of his wife, Gem’s father Jay Jay is left to raise Gem, her 15-yearold sister Valerie and her 17-year-old brother Ecka on his own. While Jay Jay’s commitment to his family doesn’t waver, the pressures to make ends meet and hold the family together are exacerbated by the antics of his older children and Gem’s truancy and stealing.Emu Runner is as much Jay Jay Daniels’ story as it is Gem’s. Not only does Jay Jay face prejudices from the white community in the town, he also has to prove himself to his Indigenous family and friends, who have little confidence in his ability as a sole parent. Jay Jay is driven by a dogged determination as he strives to nurture and protect his children. Emu Runner is a story about respecting difference. It explores the underlying racial tensions in regional Australia and the importance of traditional customs in modern Indigenous culture.BiographyImogen Thomas is her first narrative feature-length film. Imogen has a Master of Fine Arts degree from the Tisch School of Arts graduate film program at New York University. She also holds a First-Class Bachelor of Arts Honours degree in Drama, from Flinders University in South Australia. Imogen’s graduating film, Mixed Bag, premiered at the Montreal Film Festival in 2008 and went on to be screened at both national and international festivals. It received the Gold Award at the Australian Cinematographer’s Society Awards 2008 as well as being a finalist for the Wasserman and King Award, First Run Film Festival 2009, NYC. The Senate is going through a period of remarkable change as the institution aims to become more independent, transparent, and accountable and less partisan. A significant part of this modernization process has involved the establishment of a new, non-partisan, merit-based process to advise on Senate appointments. Furthermore, the Government has created a Representative Team in the Senate, consisting of three Independent Senators, to ensure Senate business can be effectively coordinated in Parliament. These measures have catalyzed changes that will have an historic impact on how the Senate functions, improve its capacity to serve Canadians, and help restore public confidence. The speaker will share his perspective on the changing dynamics in the Senate of Canada and outline his role as Government Liaison. Speaker: Senator Grant Mitchell Senator Grant Mitchell is proud to represent Alberta as an Independent Senator. He has had careers in the public service, business, and politics in Alberta, and was called to the Senate in 2005. He received a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Political Science from the University of Alberta in 1973, a Master of Arts in Political Studies from Queen's University in 1976 and a Chartered Financial Analyst title in 1983. He worked for the Government of Alberta from 1976 until 1979 and then became an executive for the Principal Group until 1986. From 1994 until 1998, Senator Mitchell was leader of the Alberta Liberal Party and leader of Alberta's official opposition. He was a member of the Alberta Legislative Assembly for the riding of Edmonton McClung and served his constituents with dedication and diligence from 1986 to 1998. Senator Mitchell later worked as an investment advisor and taught graduate level courses at the University of Calgary and Edmonton. Senator Mitchell was appointed to the position of Government Liaison in the Senate in May 2016. As Government Liaison he is one of 3 members of the Government Representative Team in the Senate, responsible for helping guide government legislation through the Upper Chamber whilst advocating for a transparent and accountable Senate that works for Canadians. He is an advocate for Senate modernization, and takes a proactive role in contributing to Senate reform.
