It seems that wherever I go in Bosnia and Herzegovina, traditional skills and cultural activities are slowly disappearing. From making instruments, to dancing and much more, the latest generations don't seem interested, and that could mean a massive impact on the heritage of not only this misunderstood country but also the wider region. I talk to Nemanja Knežević, to learn a little about the challenges he faces as the director of Banja Luka's biggest traditional dance ensemble. https://www.maslesa-folklor.org/# (Check out the website of Ensemble Veselin Mašlese. ) https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCrYoy9yza7k-h8jadcTV3Yw (Veselin Mašlese on YouTube.) https://www.instagram.com/anipmaslesa/ (Veselin Mašlese on Instagram). Rebuilding the Ferhadija Mosque in Banja Luka, Bosnia and Herzegovina

Today it's a bit of a look back episode, to an interview I did in 2016, when the Ferhadija Mosque in Banja Luka was re-opened after some 23 years. The Ferhadija Mosque in Banja Luka was originally commissioned by, Ferhat Pasha Sokolovic and built in 1579. It stood near the centre of Banja Luka until the night of 6–7 May 1993, some 27 years ago, when it was destroyed by explosion. The Ferhadija's location remained destroyed for these years and some said that it would never be rebuilt, but rebuilt it was. There were a lot of people involved in the rebuilding, a lot of unsung heroes, and one of those unsung heroes is a Brit like me. His name is Donald Reeves and he has an NGO called the Soul of Europe. Donald came back to Banja Luka to attend the opening back in 2016. I caught up with him in a hotel coffee bar in Banja Luka and I wanted to find out more about how difficult it had been to get the mosque rebuilt and his thoughts on peace building and reconciliation here in the Western Balkans. But before I started talking to Donald, I really didn't know much about him apart from what I found on Twitter. It said he was a a maverick priest, a writer, a broadcaster, a peace builder, generally a nuisance, a visionary with attitude, and also a very dangerous man. So why a very dangerous man when it comes to something like peace building? READ OUR BLOGPOST ABOUT REBUILDING THE FERHADIJA Support us on Patreon at patreon.com/davidandtamara. Last year I interviewed Jose, who had arrived in Banja Luka, having previously produced and published "Bitter Sweet Bosnia", his first film about BiH on YouTube.   We talked about filmmaking, social media, the region, BIH AND much more. Especially what attracted a Mexican American to come to this part of the world.   I posted the interview here on my podcast, which you can hear HERE.   So it was a real treat, to find out that Jose (whose latest project is a film about Albania), was coming back to Banja Luka.   We met again, and spend a fast and furious 20 hour "Creativity Camp" in the village.   Discussing many Tech Tips and Tricks, and for me, the chance to fly a Pro Drone for the first time.   Some Rakija was consumed

My good friend and Vienna based blogger, Christoph Baumgarten caught up with Nick Semwogerere, a Londoner and Musician to find out why Nick had somewhat "fallen in love" with Bosnia and Herzegovina and the Western Balkans in general. Nick has had a passion for writing since a young age. Initially starting with poetry, this led on to writing song lyrics when he got into music.  During media studies and English literature at college he found he had a writing style that flowed nicely. Nick got an A* in oral English when he left high school as expressing himself verbally and creatively has always been something that he has really enjoyed, which upon reflection influenced him to transfer these skills into ESL teaching.  Hope you enjoy the Podcast and if you did, then please share, like and of course Subscribe. I had intended to video the interview I wanted to produce for my Balkan Adventures Podcast BUT, the camera decided to stop at the 16 minute point. These things do happen, sadly. Mountain Biking in Bosnia and Herzegovina

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 25, 2017 12:06

On this episode, I talk to Jelle, who is from Belgium and now lives in Konjic in Northern Herzegovina. I caught up with him to find out more about him and his mountain biking. So how did he end up living in Bosnia and Herzegovina? It's a long story. It started as a volunteer for a youth organisation. It evolved afterwards in humanitarian work and somehow some kind of microbe bit me and I needed to come back and back all over again and more and more. At the end I just decided to give up my job and to go to live to Bosnia. Western Balkan lifestyle is certainly different from that in Northern Europe, so how difficult has it been to adjust? I was lucky to spend, maybe seven years in Bosnia as a frequent expat so I got the opportunity to get back to Belgium to consider the situation, to learn more about the country. So it was more like to move to France or Italy for me because I had already a lot of experience and I had good friends in Maglaj who warned me about a lot of situations and explained me more about difficulties maybe I would encounter. At the end it was even worse than they said, but okay. I somehow managed. Now being an expat always has its challenges. One of the most beautiful parts of the country is the people, but that's actually the hardest part also, for me, because I have to work with the people also on a professional base and it takes a while to get people to trust you and for you to trust them; to have some kind of relationship with them. What made him take up mountain biking and how does he plan his tours? I wasn't a mountain biker before. I had some sports experience, maybe with running, a little bit before. Then the thing is, Bosnia has an amazing nature and I have been hiking, with friends from Konjic, into surrounding mountains, but you always need some way of transportation to get there and to have a hike. To get really somewhere, you need a lot of time. I had an operation in 2014. Need to start with sports again. The doctor said he wouldn't advise me to start running and biking was a perfect sport to explore the mountains on a very easy way. They are close by, but with the bike you can get everywhere and to reach high peaks to get to the most beautiful parts of Bosnia somehow, which would be impossible to do by foot all the time. I can combine it with work because I'm a little bit time limited. Riding for hours at a time in the remote areas around Konitz must be lonely, so how does he cope with that? I have never actually I'm driving a lot of time alone, but you meet people. There's people hiking. I have one guy whom I met in Mostar while climbing to one peak on the Velež Mountain. We decide to go together and since we are riding some tours together also. It's a nice way to meet new people also. What have been the reactions to images he posts of his mountain bike tours on his social media? Depends. If it's one stranger, maybe from the West and from the European Union or whatever, they are amazed about the views, the tours, the nature of Bosnia and the achievements. People from Bosnia sometimes are sceptically they think. Not about the biking actually, they like it a lot too. They are amazed as well, but it's difficult for them to believe a Belgian is really willing to live in Bosnia. They want to go out. I want to go in. There's recently been an addition to his content creation with the addition of a GoPro camera. Well I've been thinking about it and I think it will bring my goals even on a bigger level. Now I have to get some good footage so I won't be able to please myself with a rather easy tour. So I will definitely try to find some better locations, better tracks, higher peaks. Recently, the disused Narrow Gauge Railway line from Čapljina has been opened to mountain bikers. Mladen Tomić

Living Your Dream in the Balkans - Balkan Life Back in the early "noughties" I directed a multi-cultural broadcast media project here in northern Bosnia and Herzegovina. Basically I ran a pop music radio station. Allied to the project was an "outreach" element, or community interaction component, where we would organise electronic music (read Trance, House, Techno) parties that formed a base to bring disparate young adults together. Multi-cultural re-binding might be a better description. God that sounds pompous! As usual I digress. We used to bring club DJs from the UK to recreate the "music scene" that young people across Europe at that time were experiencing. The music of Carl Cox, Pete Tong and Tijesto to name but a few. Lights, Lazers, Dancers .... You know the thing. Local youth here in BIH, were feeling isolated and ignored, but had a desire to feel "normal" and connected. Those feelings are still prevalent all these years later sadly. They came to our parties in droves. I used to feel immense happiness to see our audiences just having a blast wherever and whenever we organised these events. Electronic music can be quite uplifting even for an "older" chap like me. Back to the story. It must have been back in 2002ish, when I remember noticing two young guys who came to our gigs and kept hanging around the DJ booth, observing intensely, how these DJs we brought from the UK operated. At the time it looked, to me, I have to say, quite sweet. I had no idea at all back then, that many years later, both these young men would have developed into amazingly successful DJs in their own right and not just in their home town and country, but globally as well. So here I am some 14 years later, talking to Mladen Tomić, one of those young men, and finding out, that contrary to local popular negative thought, that you CAN live your dream if you come from Bosnia and Herzegovina. He plays today in locations in Mexico, the United States, across Europe and is looking forward to performing in India and Japan. That's quite something. It's so hard to find dynamic, positive role models in the Balkans these days. They are the exception not the rule. Mladen Tomić is, in my humble opinion, a role model. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/davidandtamara/message
