Dr. Michele Finneran and I discuss the support that is needed and can be received with the right direction while in Domestic Abuse situation. We discuss not just the support needed for the person in the abuse situation but the support needed for the people surrounding the person being abused. There isn't enough discussion about the people that surround the abuse victim. Those people can be helpful but can 100% become an incredibly large issue as well. Dr. Finneran's mission in writing this book, "Surviving Domestic Abuse: Formal and Informal Supports and Services", is to help victims of domestic abuse navigate effectively through the myriad of formal and informal supports and services. She interviewed real-life survivors and utilized their voices to translate what was helpful in escaping the realm of domestic abuse. Dr. Finneran's passion in writing this book is to provide knowledge, give support options and ultimately empower victims of domestic abuse. It is also the intent of this author to leverage victims' perceptions, reflections and feelings...and to document recommendations for policy, strategy and decision making for supports and service providers. Life after the military is sometimes hard and when you see the things that certain parts of the military personnel see, then it is REALLY hard. Eric and I discuss what drove him to write his new book Bomb Hunters Story - Clearing Roads. He talks about the job he had in the military and the things that he had to see and be a part of that led to PTSD and the realization that he was going to have a hard transition back to "normal" life. He found out that there was not as many resources for military veterans when they get out of the service to get help for the mental part of trauma that forms when you have the types of jobs that military personnel have. This is a fun and deep interview that surrounds finding the real you after hiding in the dark for awhile. Loss of his first son, excessive partying and alcohol use, questioning everything he grew up knowing and deciding to make some changes is what we discuss in this interview with Zachary Motes. He lost his first son at only 9 days old. He spiraled into a dark place that had him questioning everything he thought he knew in religion and spending a lot of time in bars. He was a drummer in a band and that ultimately helped him stay numb and in the bar scene. As he started to realize he needed to make some changes, he also decided to really question what he wanted out of spirituality and how to find some inner peace. He has written 2 books so far and the links are listed below. Resources: livingselfpodcast.com https://www.amazon.com/Living-Self-En... https://www.amazon.com/Living-Self-Em... When you grow up in religion you are taught that anything other than just the gender you were born in is the only option for right or wrong. You are taught that it is about a man and a woman and the rest is wrong. This is what Sue had to settle in when her child came to her about told her that they identified different then they were born. It caused riffs in her parent/child relationship as well as in her support system around her. She started researching what transgender really was and how she could help her child as a parent and find satisfaction in the religious world she grew up in. After doing her research she started finding ways to support her child with some major life decisions and still be filled in her spiritual world. Her child has now fully transitioned and is living an incredible happy life compared to where they were as a teenager. She wants to bring awareness to others out there struggling with this identity transition. As 2021 starts and everyone starts making new goals for the year, we all have to assess what we really want in life in order to set those goals. What if you are unsure about what your real WHY in life is. Corey talks about being 46 and not being fully sure what he wants to be when "he grows up". He gets overwhelmed with thinking about the bigger picture of what he thinks he should want or have and doesn't settle in enough to just take small steps to the bigger goal. We discuss how to set those small goals and the roadblocks that can get in the way in our own heads. We will be checking back in with him in 3 and 6 months to see how many small goals he set have been met instead of only focusing on the 1 year goal. He shares that it started to numb his anxiety but it ended when he found faith for the first time in his adult life. Through exploring faith, he found that his addiction was in the way of him truly embracing his potential within his faith. It is a great story of recovery although done a little different by finding faith first before recovery. We have found that most people have found faith during recovery. His relationship with food changed in College as he tried to look a certain way. He really wanted to talk about it from the male perspective because 20% of people who fight an eating disorder are male. The difference is that men don't talk about it as frequently as women do.
