“I have no special talent. I am only passionately curious.” Einstein's words cut to the core of the coaching mindset. And yet, even the most passionately curious coaches can find themselves becoming unexpectedly uncurious in a session, often for the most well-intentioned reasons. This podcast explored those moments, and listeners left with a deeper understanding of: • The kind of curiosity coaching calls for • How curiosity is connected with presence • Why and how curiosity gets disrupted • Daily practices that strengthen curiosity

About Amy:Although I'm best known as a yoga therapist for my books and teachings on Yoga and mental health, Yoga for Depression (Harmony Books), Yoga Skills for Therapists (W.W. Norton), and my new card deck Yoga for Your Mood (Sounds True), my passion, ever since I picked up a pencil in the second grade, was to write a book with a character like Nancy Drew who could transport me to a world beyond my suburban bedroom. I grew up in Pittsburgh before it was green and beautiful. Like the darkened riverfront lit by the coal fires of J & L Steel, my world view was bleak. I read to find a brighter place in other worlds, and I wanted to write books that could meet that bleakness and transcend it. In pursuit of that desire, I returned to school, earning the Master of Fine Arts in literary fiction from Bennington College Writing Seminars in 2000.My short fiction and poetry appeared in numerous literary journals. I received the Allen Tate Memorial Award for the Short Story and was a finalist for the William Faulkner Award for the Novel and for the Heekin Group Foundation Fellowship for the novel-in-progress. I also received Second Place, in the Writer's Digest Writing Competition for Literary Fiction.I began my love affair with yoga in the late 1980's, after a successful career in television broadcasting that garnered the documentaries I wrote and produced national and regional awards but did not alleviate my chronic depression. When I started practicing yoga daily, with supervision, I was able to titrate off medication and find joy in the world once again. As my practice deepened, I wrote for magazines like Yoga Journal and Yoga International and wrote the first feature article about yoga and depression called “Yoga the Natural Prozac”, which appeared on the cover of Yoga Journal in 1999. My own recovery led me to research and write books on yoga and mental health, and I became passionate about sharing what had helped me heal with others who suffered. In 2004, I founded the LifeForce Yoga® Healing Institute, which continues to train yoga teachers and health care providers in yoga practices appropriate in clinical and yoga therapy settings. I'm happy that the evidence-based yoga protocol for managing mood I developed is in use in health care settings throughout the world. This protocol is featured on audio-visual products, including the LifeForce Yoga series, an award-winning library of evidence-based yoga and meditation CDs and DVDs for mood management.I love yoga and continue to teach workshops and trainings, but a book by my dear yogi brother and friend Stephen Cope called The Great Work of Your Life, set me on a course to reclaim my dharma. I returned to writing fiction in 2016, and though I have written several other novels, TEMPLE DANCER is the first to be published.Amy's WebsiteSupport the show
In this episode of Curing with Sound, we explore how focused ultrasound is being studied as a treatment for depression and anxiety, told through the perspectives of both a leading researcher and a veteran who experienced it firsthand. Noah Philip, MD, is a professor of psychiatry and human behavior at Brown University's Alpert Medical School and a leading expert on focused ultrasound neuromodulation for psychiatric conditions. He discusses his research using low-intensity focused ultrasound to modulate the amygdala for the treatment of depression and anxiety in veterans. Joining him is Nick Marinelli, an Iraq War veteran and Black Hawk mechanic who participated in Dr. Philip's revolutionary clinical trial after struggling with depression and anxiety for over a decade following his deployment. Nick shares his experience receiving focused ultrasound treatments and the immediate improvements he noticed in his daily mood and his ability to be present with his family, particularly during meaningful moments like his daughter's kindergarten graduation. Discussion highlights: Revolutionary Mental Health Technology: Discover how focused ultrasound neuromodulation offers millimeter-scale precision to target deep brain structures like the amygdala. This noninvasive alternative to traditional psychiatric treatments has the potential to transform mental healthcare for treatment-resistant conditions. From Research to Real-World Impact: Hear about Dr. Philip's advocacy efforts, including his 2024 congressional briefing to expand access to focused ultrasound treatments, and the upcoming four-year VA-funded trial aimed at optimizing dosing strategies for clinical implementation across underserved communities. [TRIGGER WARNING: Sensitive topics, including suicide]“Our thoughts drive our nervous system, and when you're in a sympathetic state, it's very difficult to achieve true healing.” - Dr. Christina BjorndalDiet and lifestyle are crucial elements of our overall health and well-being, but we have to consider that they're part of a larger puzzle. While you can help your clients make significant progress by focusing solely on the physical level, real, lasting change only comes when you start to incorporate the mental, emotional, and spiritual aspects.Fewer and fewer people have the support and resources they need to be able to recover from mental health struggles. As health and wellness professionals, this is where we can really be of service. We need to start leaning into creating spaces for human connection. It's an essential part of medicine. By holding space and allowing your clients to feel, you are a form of medicine for them.Today, I'm joined by naturopathic physician Dr. Christina Bjorndal to further explore the connection between mind-body medicine and mental health. Dr. Bjorndal not only works with patients with mental health diagnoses, but she has also dealt with severe mental health challenges herself, which ultimately led her to discover the power of a holistic approach to healing. In this conversation, Dr. Bjorndal and I discuss her journey from corporate executive to naturopathic physician, the severe mental health challenges she faced, integrating mind, body, and spirit in healing, the power of community and recognizing love, how to start taking small steps in recovery, the role of movement and human connection in overcoming depression, why we need holistic approaches to supporting mental health and well-being, and more.Enjoy the episode, and let's innovate and integrate together!---Learn more or watch the video version of this conversation at https://integrativewomenshealthinstitute.com/how-to-support-your-clients-with-depression-and-anxiety-with-dr-christina-bjorndal/.Connect with me and access our entire platform at IntegrativeWomensHealthInstitute.com (https://integrativewomenshealthinstitute.com/). Your Parenting Mojo - Respectful, research-based parenting ideas to help kids thrive
In Part 1 of this mini-series looking at Jonathan Haidt's book The Anxious Generation, we discovered that the teen mental health crisis might not be as dramatic as The Anxious Generation claims - and that changes in diagnosis and coding could be inflating the numbers. But even if we accept that teens' struggles have increased somewhat, the next crucial question is: what's actually causing the change?Jonathan Haidt is adamant that social media causes depression and anxiety in teenagers. He claims that "dozens of experiments" prove social media use is a CAUSE, not just a correlate, of mental health problems. But when you dig into the studies, as we do in this episode, we'll see that the 'causal' data is nowhere near as strong as Haidt claims. We'll examine the experimental evidence behind social media and teen mental health claims, reveal why leading researchers compare social media effects on teens to eating potatoes, and uncover what factors actually explain 99% of youth mental health outcomes. Because if we're going to spend time and energy helping our kids, we want to make sure we're spending it doing things that will actually help.Questions This Episode Will AnswerDoes social media really cause teen depression and anxiety? Research shows correlation, not proven causation, with social media effects on teens explaining less than 1% of wellbeing, similar to the effect of eating potatoes. (Some researchers argue that this is still important enough to pay attention to - the episode explores why.)Why do I keep hearing that social media is harmful if the research is weak? Many (but not all) social media studies find some evidence of harm, but when you look at the methodology this isn't surprising - researchers do things like sending participants daily reminders that "limiting social media is good for you," and then asking them how much social media they've consumed and how they feel. It's hard to draw strong conclusions from this data! How can different studies on social media show opposite results? Researchers studying teen social media use can get completely different results from the same data depending on how they choose to analyze it. The episode looks at those choices and what they mean for understanding whether social media causes kids' depression and anxiety. Is limiting my teen's social media use actually going to help them? Current evidence suggests that some kids who use social media a lot are vulnerable to experiencing depression and anxiety, and limiting their use specifically may be protective. There is little evidence to support the idea that blanket bans on kids' social media/smart phone usage will result in dramatic improvements in youth mental health, and focusing on issues that are more clearly connected to mental health would likely have a greater positive impact. What You'll Learn in This Episode How most social media research creates results that don't tell us what we want to know (but then reports the results as if they do) How the same teen mental health data can be analyzed to support opposite conclusions about social media effects on teens What family relationships, academic pressure, and economic stress reveal about the real drivers of youth mental health issues How social media and teen mental health correlations explain the same amount of variance as seemingly irrelevant factors like potato consumption How researcher bias and study...

How can humor help you with depression and anxiety?Meet Dave Mowry!Dave is an Author of 2 books about living with a mental illness. OMG That's Me! and OMG That's Me! 3. Teacher of stand-up comedy to folks with a mental illness, Co-executive director at NAMI, and popular podcast guest. What started out as a couple of blog posts blossomed into a following of over 1,000,000 people—who have all read and been touched by Dave's stories. The most extraordinary thing he found when writing about his experiences is that the most common comment about his work is “OMG that's me. You are telling my story. I don't feel so alone now.”Living with mental illness is hard, but it's especially difficult when dealing with more than one condition at the same time. Many books about coping with mental illness focus on one disorder, such as anxiety, panic attacks, or depression. Because Dave Mowry didn't see any that dealt with his situation of living with multiple disorders simultaneously, he decided to write about it himself.Additional Resources:"OMG That's Me!: Bipolar Disorder, Depression, Anxiety, Panic Attacks, and More" by Dave MowryListen to the Podcast, leave a rating and a review:Apple: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/depression-and-anxiety-humor-therapy-for-your-mental/id1614151066?i=1000701685747Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/episode/49yDpUGHKTpgVkMdTGOzTq?si=YTZR0mPfSiuszsP43FDMYQhttps://open.spotify.com/episode/49yDpUGHKTpgVkMdTGOzTqYouTube: https://youtu.be/AKWmRPjLWzY?si=fNHQJ_i-Nw5_rH3y

If you deal with menopause brain fog, mild depression or anxiety any time of year, this is for you. It's also for anyone who wants the latest science on exercise and brain health. The evidence around how movement affects mental well-being is growing, and I want to share some of the most impactful insights with you. Almost all types of exercise seem to show benefits on mental well-being. Activities like resistance training, yoga, other mind-body activities, aerobic exercise, and high-intensity interval training (HIIT) can support brain health to some extent. In this episode I'll share which exercise helps most, specifically on menopause brain fog, mood, or anxiety. No matter when you're listening to this episode, it's relevant for multiple reasons and seasons. But as I release it during the holiday season, it can have more impact. Whether you might be facing memories of loved ones you've lost, whether it was this year or in years past, or the traditions, memories, or emotions that come with the season that make this time of year bittersweet. While holidays can be magical and full of warmth, they can also feel heavy, bringing sadness, anxiety, or emotional struggles to the surface. For women with menopause brain fog and memory issues, the holidays can have an even greater impact. Beyond Menopause and Brain Fog Global prevalence of depression in perimenopausal women are at 33.9% and 34.9% in postmenopausal women. Why? This may be due to estrogen and progesterone fluctuations, sleep disturbances and greater susceptibility to negative effects of stress. Most adults with depression don't receive adequate care - due to the stigma or the fact that they don't respond well to antidepressants. And pharmaceuticals don't address the physical comorbidities associated with depression. Exercise is well accepted as an alternative or complement due to accessibility, acceptability and safety. Even physical activity below public health recommendations can yield significant mental health benefits [and is a necessary place to start]. Menopause Brain Fog, It's Not Just You A recent study published in the Biomedical Central Public Health Journal of over 200 randomized controlled trials show exercise interventions may have more potent antidepressant effects than SSRIs. A study examined which of 5 exercise interventions helped reduce depression levels most in postmenopausal women and if certain population characteristics responded differently. The Exercise Interventions: Stretching Exercise Aerobic Exercise Resistance Training Mind-Body Exercise Multi Exercise Mind-Body Exercise had the greatest effect on easing anxiety, followed by Aerobic Exercise. Exercise helps because it creates a controlled stress response, increasing resilience to anxiety. Years ago, I shared a study showing yoga boosts cognitive function more than muscle conditioning. A study published in Menopause: The Journal confirmed that mind-body exercises reduce fatigue, insomnia, depression, and anxiety. Why mindbody? Yoga increases melatonin levels, balances nervous system and improves brain-derived neurotrophic which improves cognition and memory. Best Exercise for Menopause Brain Fog The menopause brain fog experienced by many women may improve most with HIIT, being characterized by periods of “all out” exercise to breathlessness. A study in the Journal of Exercise Nutrition & Biochemistry in 2018 showed a Wingate protocol study on HIIT: Exercise Structure 30 seconds of all-out effort (fast-paced or against resistance) per interval 4 - 6 intervals per session, with 4 minutes of recovery between intervals Total Intense Exercise Time 2 - 3 minutes of intense exercise per session lasting a total of 20 minutes, including rest periods Training Frequency 3 sessions per week (totaling 15 minutes of high-intensity work per week) Results 2 Weeks - Improved skeletal muscle oxidative capacity 6 Weeks - Equivalent to traditional endurance training (40 - 60 minutes, 5 sessions per week) Additional Benefits for Midlife Women: Time - HIIT sessions take 1.5 hours a week, compared to other traditional endurance training 4.5 hours a week Cortisol - Short HIIT sessions avoid the cortisol spike (40 - 60 minutes is the tipping point where cortisol spikes negatively) Most women say they feel more energized, lighter, and more focused after HIIT compared to long endurance sessions. Studies on postmenopausal women with osteoporosis found that high-intensity, high-impact protocols led to positive responses, with low injury rates and high retention. Other Exercises for Menopause Brain Fog Resistance training also proves popular among women with anxiety, potentially due to the fact that the increase in heart rate and intensity is temporary, strength gains are made fairly quickly for a beginner and that carries over to increasing motivation, improved sleep. Walking outdoors with friends combines three sources of serotonin for women, particularly: movement, sunlight, and venting/talking. References: Han, B., Duan, Y., Zhang, P. et al. Episode 284: Are Anger and Shame the Root of Depression and Anxiety? - Interview Bronwyn SchweigerdtDo you suffer from depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, even psychosis? My guest today, Brownwyn Schweigerdt may be the most evocative psychotherapist you've ever heard. Instead of fixing peoples messes, her goal is to elicit the feelings we're most ashamed to have, such as hatred, betrayal, anger, shame. She knows that even though feelings are invisible they don't evaporate - instead they store away in our bodies when we disown them. These hidden feelings haunt us and cause mental illness until we externalize them into words… so stay tune and let's have some words with Bronwyn.Bronwyn has a masters degree in counseling and another in nutritions She is a public speaker, and author and licensed psychotherapist. I'm excited to have her on the show as depression and anxiety have shown up in my kids and I'm always looking for answers. So…let's get right down to talking about this topic of how feelings buried alive cause us some serious harm.Tune in to hear my discussion with Bronwyn and to hear us discuss questions like:Let's start with your story. What in your life brought you to want to specialize in this career, this topic?Tell us about this idea of externalizing our feelings into words and the best ways to do that and not alienate the world. You believe that most types of therapies and medications don't work for depression and anxiety, let's hear about that. There are a lot of people on meds. What role does shame play in our lives? How do we raise resilient children, and how do we help older children that may already suffer with some of these issues like depression and anxiety?Find Bronwyn:Podcast: Angry at the Right ThingsYears ago - like really - 20-30 years ago, I read a book called Feelings Buried Alive Never Die. It became one of my go-to favorites because it explained so many things to me about myself. Things I didn't understand about me. Bronwyn's message is very much the same. If we bury feelings they show up in our body in different ways - illnesses, aches, weakness, stuff just not working right. Because our bodies and minds are so closely connected, I believe this is very likely true. I don't think it's the absolute cause for all that ails us, but I do believe that it effects us. Mental and physical are intertwined. As we create our best life stories on purpose we are always needing to process and grow from the emotions and the messiness that life generates. Understanding how to do this, like the things we've talked about today can be crucial to making changes that bless our lives, our minds, our hearts. As we close I want to send my love and best wishes to all the listeners of the LYS podcast. I am getting ready to take a sabbatical from the show and I want to thank all the editors, listeners, supporters and people who have learned to love their story on our 8 year journey together. Given that 1 out of 6 Americans are taking some sort of psychiatric drug, it's probably time to let go of the stigma surrounding mental illness. And it might also be a good time to question whether giving people drugs is always the best go-to solution for mental health. Dr. Ellen Vora, a functional medicine practitioner and holistic psychiatrist, is one of the leaders of a movement that aims to treat the whole person, and to stop using drugs as a first resort. On this episode of Women of Impact with Lisa Bilyeu, Ellen Vora discusses how to find the real source of your suffering, what to do if you are too much of a people pleaser, the connection between gut health and brain health, and ways to encourage yourself to make better lifestyle choices.
