Hello to you listening in Hamburg, Germany!Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is Stories From Women Who Walk with 60 Seconds for Motivate Your Monday and your host, Diane Wyzga.  We are living in a time of historic upheaval. But what if this currently confusing, chaotic, confounding, cultural churn is stumbling toward change that reveals the hidden roots of social injustice for what they are so that we can reconfigure for good? How easily the safeguards can be leaped. And they have been. We can clutch our pearls and bemoan the times we live in; or, we can invite our feelings of hopelessness to give way to action, to repair, restore, and renew out of the ashes of the old ways. We are responsible for making change because we're the only “sentient force” that can.Question: What one small grand gesture are you committed to take on behalf of what you love and care for? These words from the Irish poet Seamus Heaney may motivate and sustain you wherever your feet touch the ground, whatever progress you are intent on making today.    “History says, Don't hopeOn this side of the grave...But then, once in a lifetimeThe longed-for tidal waveOf justice can rise upAnd hope and history rhyme.” [“The Cure at Troy” Seamus Heaney]BONUS: Seamus Heaney reads his poem, The Cure at TroyThe Cure at Troy (full text)"Human beings sufferThey torture one another,They get hurt and get hard.No poem or play or songCan fully right a wrongInflicted and endured. The innocent in gaolsBeat on their bars together.A hunger-striker's fatherStands in the graveyard dumb. The police widow in veilsFaints at the funeral home. History says, Don't hopeOn this side of the grave…But then, once in a lifetimeThe longed-for tidal waveOf justice can rise up,And hope and history rhyme. So hope for a great sea-changeOn the far side of revenge.Believe that a further shoreIs reachable from here.Believe in miraclesAnd cures and healing wells. Call miracle self-healing:The utter, self-revealingDouble-take of feeling. If there's fire on the mountainOr lightning and stormAnd a god speaks from the sky That means someone is hearingThe outcry and the birth-cryOf new life at its term.It means once in a lifetimeThat justice can rise upAnd hope and history rhyme. 60 Seconds for Wednesdays of Whidbey: What Is “Engaged Storyism” for the Revolutions Ahead?

Hello to you listening all over the world!Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is Stories From Women Who Walk with 60 Seconds for Wednesdays on Whidbey and your host, Diane Wyzga.I coined the term “engaged storyism.” What do I mean?  “Engaged” in something means to be actively involved, focused, and committed. “Storyism” is concern about and action aimed at advocating for narratives that unite, not divide; that raise up, not beat down; that include, not exclude. Most importantly storyism is a willingness to examine our narratives, reconfigure outdated beliefs, and undo memories that keep us attached to the old ways and self-images so that we evolve from who we used to be to our better selves.  Authentic narrative has been fading while social media encourages algorithm-driven opinions encapsulated as sound bytes and masquerading as wisdom. We have a duty to revive stories that have the power to heal people and cultures, unbalance the status quo. When we employ stories as a bridge to peace, to the greater good, we can help each other out of the dark places or, as I have said for years:  “Each One Lift One.”Following are four questions to kick-start “engaged storyism” conversations through the revolutions ahead:  ✓ How do we engage in empathetic imagination?✓ How do we get good at turning toward the future, no matter how uncertain it may be?✓ How do we extend kindness to each other, especially to those with whom we disagree?✓ How do we sustain ourselves, and each other?Question: Engaged storyism is a collective effort. What thoughts and ideas do you have to help us help each get really good at turning toward  the new narrative future? You're always invited: “Come for the stories - stay for the magic!” Speaking of magic, would you subscribe and spread the word with a generous 5-star review and comment - it helps us all - and join us next time!Meanwhile, stop by my Quarter Moon Story Arts website to:✓ Check out Services I Offer https://www.quartermoonstoryarts.net/services/,✓ For a no-obligation conversation about your communication challenges, get in touch with me today✓ Stay current with Diane as “Wyzga on Words” on Substack and on LinkedInStories From Women Who Walk Production TeamPodcaster: Diane F Wyzga & Quarter Moon Story ArtsMusic: Mer's Waltz from Crossing the Waters by Steve Schuch & Night Heron MusicAll content and image © 2019 to Present Quarter Moon Story Arts. Tribe Sober - inspiring an alcohol free life!

Play Episode Listen Later May 25, 2024 39:17

NEWSFLASH! - Our Breaking Free Program is open for enrollment until 30th May - get more info here    I'm Janet Gourand, founder of Tribe Sober and I celebrated my 9th Soberversary on 23rd May, 2024! Most of our Tribe Sober members know my story – how I quit drinking and started Tribe Sober but as we are getting new podcast listeners every week I'm re-releasing my story along with my Goodbye to Alcohol Letter. But before that I have some fresh content that will be useful to everyone on this journey…. In this episode:- Common mistakes when we're trying quit drinking Mistake number 1 — Waiting for rock bottom I knew I had a problem but I was in denial for years. Convincing myself that I wasn't that bad. I couldn't possibly be an alcoholic because I was holding down a responsible job and raising a family. An alcoholic was that homeless man in the park who had lost everything. That wasn't me! Mistake number 2 — Moderation I spent a decade stuck in the Moderation Trap. Once I'd learned that the low risk limits of alcohol are just one and a half bottles of wine a week I decided that I would drink within those limits. It was only when I tried (and failed) to do that that I realised just how dependent I had become. Mistake number 3 — Fearing failure I almost never got started on this life-changing journey because I believed I would fail. I just couldn't imagine quitting alcohol, never having a drink again. I knew that I had tried (and failed) to moderate my drinking again and again. Surely it would be even harder to quit completely? Mistake number 4 — Worrying about other people Peer pressure is powerful. I was trapped in my drinking because I couldn't bear to peel away from the herd and be different. As an introvert and a people pleaser I didn't want to be the centre of attention as I was bombarded with questions about why I wasn't drinking. Mistake number 5 — Being influenced by marketing As a teenager I believed that alcohol was cool. Wine became the essential parenting aid as I joined the mommy juice culture. Mid-life challenges needed wine as did juggling a career with family life. Retirement gave me time to relax and drink even more wine! Mistake number 6 — Waiting for happiness to strike.. I had relied on alcohol to make me feel good for a such a long time that I missed those chemical highs when I stopped. During my first few months of sobriety I didn't change anything in my life. I just didn't drink. I expected to feel happy because I was sober. But I didn't, I felt flat and rather depressed. I learned that I would need a project to keep my happy brain chemicals firing! Mistake number 7 — Being depressed about quitting I had to quit for health reasons and was horrified at the prospect of an alcohol free life. I imagined that an alcohol free life would be a grey and boring existence. Alcohol had become so entrenched in my life that I had no idea how I would socialise, relax or have fun without it. Mistake number 8 — Trying to do it alone I thought there was something wrong with me because I couldn't be happy with just “one glass” of wine like some of my friends. I tried (and failed) to quit over and over. I was ashamed of my drinking problem and wanted to fix it myself. I didn't want to reach out for help or join a community. LEARNING FROM MISTAKES — 8 TIPS! TIP NUMBER 1: Do it now! Alcohol dependence is like an elevator and it's only going down. The longer you leave it the worse it will get so if you're worried about your drinking then Do it Now! TIP NUMBER 2: Forget Moderation! If you could moderate you would have done it by now. People who can moderate just do it naturally. They might have a glass of champagne at a wedding but alcohol is not really on their radar. TIP NUMBER 3: Have your reasons ready Just smile and say “I'm taking a break from the booze because I've not been sleeping well” and remember it's not your responsibility to make other people feel comfortable about their drinking! TIP NUMBER 4: Change your thinking…about drinking Reflect and question the limiting beliefs you hold about alcohol. Do you really need alcohol to have fun, to relax, to console yourself for a difficult day? Explore new ways to manage these situations. TIP NUMBER 5: Reconfigure your life! When you quit drinking you can't just leave everything the same. You'll need to change your routines and get new interests. New hobbies and a new community will keep you happy and engaged. TIP NUMBER 6: Get excited! Get excited about this life changing opportunity! You are going to look better, feel better, sleep better and be full of energy. Ditching the booze is the best thing we can do for our health and happiness as we get older. TIP NUMBER 7: Find your People The joy of connecting with others on this journey is that we realise we are NOT alone. 20% of social drinkers will become dependent over the years. There is such power and relief in sharing our stories with others in a community like tribesober.com TIP NUMBER 8: Progress not Perfection should be your strategy. Some people have many Day Ones but the important thing is to keep trying. Do it in stages. 30 days, 100 days, 6 months and then a year. The House That Shadows Built

It was the great chasm that motivated me. The unassailable gap between the bombed out villages and thriving city centres. That abscess of white noise and polished floors between the churchyards and dirty backrooms, spaces with no greater purpose than to provide a spot in which to try and meet oblivion at a low price. Everything was set up to sparkle and catch our eye. We were magpies and vultures, scared by the shadows - the great fucking ‘what if?' of death and pain.  My whole idea was to abolish the chasm, destroy the dam and let shopping centres be washed in blood. To break one hallucination and replace it with another. Reconfigure our brains to at least see where the two worlds crossed over; to see the overlaps between comfy Sunday afternoons, hot soup and suburban fences and the spontaneous suicides of smartphone assembly line workers and office block cleaners, tumbling through the air from the great physical heights that they had looked down on their own lives from every day. Skyscrapers and immense factories; great manifestations of the mythical career ladder, the falling figures rushing towards null, on their way to become one with the cracks in the pavement, the cracks that children hop-scotched over playing their imaginative games and which the grazing homeless scanned for dropped coins and cigarette butts......

[2:24] Justin is rejoined today by Morgan O'Rourke and Hilary Tuttle, who are the journalistic forces behind the award-winning RIMS publication Risk Management Magazine. Morgan is the RIMS publication director and editor-in-chief of the magazine. Hilary is the managing editor of the magazine and ace reporter. [2:43] We continue the dialog from the previous episode to discuss not only the topics of the day but one of the key articles in the current issue of Risk Management Magazine. Hilary wrote an article titled “Strengthening Your Active Shooter Response Plan.” It covered how RIMS handled active shooter preparedness during RISKWORLD 2023. [3:06] They were in Atalanta and just two miles away, there was a tragic mass shooting that was also a major disruption for RISKWORLD. We will explore that article a bit and dive into the perspectives from RIMS leadership that Hilary documented so well. [3:22] Justin welcomes Morgan and Hilary back to RIMScast. [3:29] Justin asks about the Business Interruption Values article in the current issue of Risk Management Magazine. Hilary explains the meaning. How much are you making per time? What does a business interruption cost you? The values determine what insurance coverage you want to secure, such as for replacement cost. [4:40] Mogan recommends reviewing and updating your policies for inflation. Talk to your agent to make sure you have appropriate coverage. Reconfigure your policy as needed. You want the right insurance to cover the value of whatever is interrupted. [4:57] Hilary notes that the claims environment has gotten more difficult. Dealing with hurricanes, for example, do you understand how much each location of your business could be losing? Are you covered for business losses as well as property damage? A lot has changed in your business over the past few years. Do you have new locations? [5:41] Business patterns have shifted. What does business as usual look like for you? It's not what it used to be and you might not be insured for what that means today. Justin reads an excerpt from an article by Jason Cables about operational factors and interdependencies within the company. Justin recommends the article. [6:49] The goal of Risk Management Magazine for the ideal article is not only something that talks about risk but gets to the management of that risk. What you do about the risk is where the risk manager comes in and it is the key differentiator of the magazine. [7:51] Hilary's article in the current issue of Risk Management Magazine covers risk management in an active shooter event. RISKWORLD 2023 in Atlanta was getting ready for the closing keynote by NASCAR driver Danica Patrick when there was a shooting a couple of miles away at a medical facility. RISKWORLD 2023 went on lockdown. [9:56] Hilary comes from a hard news background, so covering this event reminded her of her former work. As she reported it, the event became more vivid. She interviewed RIMS CEO Gary LaBranche and Chief Events and Sales Officer Stuart Ruff-Lyon, and the article grew to cover broader lessons than just how to manage active shooter response. [11:37] Hilary says there are people in the risk management industry who refuse to talk about the parts of the plan that aren't perfect. Focusing on how to do better gives people more confidence in you as a brand and it helps others figure out where things might not go right in their plans, and be prepared for that and build better plans. [12:04] The goal in doing the article was not to glorify RIMS or create a puff piece on how RIMS was amazing but to show what went right and what was challenging and ways to strengthen your plan for the future. [12:52] Five years ago, Justin was at a Yext two-day technology event when there was a bomb scare nest door that closed the conference. Justin reached out to Yext about covering the event in an article but the company was unwilling to talk about it. He has not heard from them since. [13:35] Justin believes it's a missed opportunity for a company not to acknowledge that something went wrong that was beyond their control and where's what they did to address it and to keep everybody safe. Morgan adds that a threat event can be a case study of how you can do your risk management job better. [14:20] Shootings are not going away. It behooves us to examine all of the angles that we can. Morgan thinks Hilary did a great job in bringing out some of the more unique elements that you might not get from other resources. [14:47] RIMS plug time! Sponsor a weekly or dedicated episode of RIMScast! Contact us at pd@rims.org. For upcoming virtual workshops visit RIMS.org/virtualworkshops to see the full calendar. A link is in the show notes. That's early morning in the U.S. I, Justin, will be hosting it. Register and attend! [16:26] Hilary says it is easier to reflect on a disaster when it is a near miss. RISKWORLD 2023 had enough of a crisis to clarify what did work or didn't work in their plan. If there had been an incident on-site, it would have been a very different prospect to cover it. Hilary says the attack surface has gotten a lot bigger with more complicated events. [17:12] Shootings happen everywhere so you have to be prepared in ways that may not have existed previously. Near misses still count. Sadly, shooting is probably the top physical threat that businesses in the United States face today. [18:10] To make a pitch for Risk Management Magazine, your article must get to what risk management and risk managers can do about the risk, and not advertise your product, obviously, so the entire audience can look broadly at the risk they face. Risk changes at the level of individual companies. Start with the broadest perspective. [19:39] Hilary recommends that you not submit first-person “we” articles. Look at your experience as a jumping-off point and think about what are the connection points that are relevant to other people and other businesses. There's not a one-size-fits-all problem. The way an issue impacts your business gets specific. [20:16] Cut some of the details. Tell us some of the interesting complications that either made it notable and relevant to other organizations or just the parts that are relevant to organizations like yours. Talk like you're talking to a colleague in a different industry. What are the challenges we have in common and how are we dealing with them? [20:43] Instead of using the first person, talk about how this is one approach… How would you frame your experience as guidance or a lesson for someone in a different sector or organization? Think about three or five specific takeaways from your experience that would be relevant to somebody else and start there. [22:26] Morgan says thank you to the readers of Risk Management Magazine, for reading and sharing. He's always happy to hear your comments and feedback. He's grateful that someone would open the pages and read an article. Hilary would love to hear what they could do better or have you contribute a piece. They are here for you, so reach out! The Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele, had in October announced that apex bank would release re-designed naira notes by December 15, 2022. He also disclosed that the old notes would cease to be regarded as legal tender by January 31, 2023. Emefiele pointed out that the redesigning of the naira notes would help to curb counterfeit notes and reduce ransom payments to terrorists and kidnappers.

Chris Cheung's new cookbook, Damn Good Chinese Food: Dumplings, Egg Rolls, Bao Buns, Sesame Noodles, Roast Duck, Fried Rice, and More, takes inspiration from the place Cheung grew up living, eating, and working in: New York City's Chinatown. Cheung, chef and owner of East Wind Snack Shop, explores the food of Chinatown, which is often overlooked or under appreciated in the renaissance of Chinese cooking, and takes readers through his favorite dishes. He joins us to discuss the new cookbook.   Wonton Noodle Soup MAKES 6 BOWLS | PREP TIME: 3½ HOURS | COOKING TIME: 10 MINUTES There are times when you have to accept hard truths that life throws right in your face. You can't make a good wonton soup without MSG. It is a necessary flavor that—when combined with plump fat dumplings, pork broth, some scallions, and white pepper—magically transports you to a magnificent noodle dream, where you're holding a weird big white spoon and slurping up silky clouds of goodness. Reconfigure your brain waves through each spoon of broth with a savoriness that coats your tongue and takes you to a happy place that only a few dishes in this world can do. That's a good wonton noodle soup. There is something comforting about a hot bowl of Cantonese wonton noodle soup that makes everyone warm and fuzzy. This truly great dish has transcended time. It has gone from a humble Chinese classic to an iconic Chinese American bowl of awesome. In separate pot, heat your broth in a pot to a simmer. Place 12 wontons in the blanching water for 3 to 4 minutes and transfer to bowls; repeat for 12 remaining wontons. Technology can be very helpful to survivors of domestic violence, sexual violence, and stalking, but is also often misused by abusers to harass, threaten, coerce, monitor, exploit, and violate their victims. The resources below explore the extent and nature of technology-facilitated abuse. In this podcast we discuss with Julia Slupska to discuss how smart home devices can be a tool for domestic violence and ways we can improve the security around it. Speaker Profile: Julia Slupska is a doctoral student at the Centre for Doctoral Training in Cybersecurity and the Oxford Internet Institute. Her research focuses on how cybersecurity concepts and practices can address the technologically-mediated abuse. She is also exploring how feminist theories and methodology—such as participatory action research and the ethics of care—can improve cybersecurity. Previously, she completed the MSc in Social Science of the Internet on the role of metaphors in international cybersecurity policy. Before joining the OII, Julia worked on an LSE Law project on comparative regional integration and coordinated a course on Economics in Foreign Policy for the Foreign and Commonwealth Office. This past weekend I was invited to write and share a new spoken word poem at my soul sister, Danette May’s event. To say I was terrified is putting it mildly, but I did it! And while I’m still processing my the journey and the emotions around it, one thing I know for certain is that my fear is always the X that marks the spot when it comes to what fulfills me and makes me feel like I’m living in my highest potential. I shared a couple clips of the poem on social media, but have gotten several requests to hear the poem in its entirety. Always one to feel the fear again (why?!), I’ve recorded it on this episode and have provided the words below. If my words pull at your soul and you know someone else who would benefit, please share. Thanks so much for all of your support! Here we go… I got up today only to find that I’m still not yet where I want to be A little less “I woke up like this”  A little more - “existential crisis” – feeling stuck in my reality.   When I think about who I am now, compared to who I think I’m supposed to be  I wake up every morning, AND INSTEAD of doing things that set me free I put on a straight-jacket and wear someone else’s identity.    Not even accepting myself on my own ID  Height one inch taller Weight 10 pounds smaller Anyone else fear a lie detector test at the DMV – or is it just me?   Just the thought of trying to change my life makes me feel defeated  Like I got the short end of the stick Or like this bitch over here got all the talent  And I got cheated.   When I close my eyes, I can see my life’s vision But when I open them, I can’t see past my email, my thighs, my to-do list and dirty kitchen I mean what’s it gonna take to reach my dream, be seen, and get attention? Instead of growing my mind I put all my energy towards beauty, titles and Instagram mentions.   When will I be enough? Thanks to Fairytales and Ariel, I’ve spent my whole life chasing people and stuff “Look at this stuff isn’t it neat? Wouldn’t you think my collection’s complete?”   Still waiting for my Prince Charming, castle and Fairy Godmother Jerry Maguire said, “You complete me”  So feeling enough must ONLY come from a love.r   So many mixed messages, it’s no wonder we’re confused The world tries keeping us busy stressing over low carbs, waist trainers and red-bottom shoes They sidetrack us from our purpose with diets and promises of youth But it’s a choice to decide to be committed to finding and living your truth.   The other day I was walking past a man in conversation with his mate He said, and I quote, “You deserve the life you tolerate” I just about choked Cause at that point in my day I was feeling upset Sorry for myself because there are unlived dreams I haven’t met yet If what I tolerate is the life that I’m living  then you’re telling me it’s been my choice to not use these gifts I’ve been given?   They say through ownership I can get my power back I gotta be honest – easier said than done I was really hoping this whole personal development thing would be a little more fun…   True story – I was recently at an event like this Sitting in the audience And from the stage I felt the speakers words hit me in the soul much like a deliverance: I am not what you think I am; I am not what I think I am; I am what I think you think I am.” Let me repeat that…. I am not what you think I am; I am not what I think I am; I am what I think you think I am” Moral of the story is the only thing that’s stopping us, is what other people think  Get your mind off other people’s shit  And put your soul back in the driver’s seat!  The only thing wrong with you is that you think something is wrong with you.   Everything is right with you  In spite of you Ignoring the higher you The answers are all inside of you So why are you Gripping onto others view When what they think of you is…  NOTHING. Because they’re only thinkin’ about themselves.   The truth will set you free, But first it will piss you off And the truth is: If you keep fighting for your limitations, you get to keep them It’s time to stop choosing suffering  and choose to fight for your queendom.    I know the life I’m born for and the woman I’m supposed to be I’m embarrassed to tell you my soul is an undercover celebrity So where do I go if I believe the life I have now must be disputed  It’s like I can see I’m on screen But my voice has been muted It’s been so long since I’ve used it, or maybe I never learned how But lately something’s stirring, rising up telling me my time is now.   What stops us are the lies we choose to believe It’s an imagined future of pain that we think we perceive  It’s when I’m alone that my fears go viral Next is panic, then my anxiety starts to spiral.    I’m picturing judgment, comparison, an imagined future that’s not even real  It’s our past informing our future telling us how to feel! I believe the reason we feel pain is because we need to bridge the gap, Between our fear and our faith in our source and its unlimited tap.   In order to become the woman I’m chasing I have to let go of the woman I’m facing The mirror is the place where you have to fall in love With all the scars from our past  Reconfigure them from curses, into gifts from above Trusting that what you have now is what you need to begin And who’ll you’ll become will transform as you start to step in.   If I don’t start to take action now, it will be consequential  Because my biggest fear is dying, without reaching my highest potential ‘Cuz it just takes one to change your family tree and your bravery and courage is bringing your ancestors to their knees They may not have been able to use their voice or have what you do That’s why you must take action, They have blazed this trail for you.   But we have to wake up from the lie, and emerge from our comas To stop sleepwalking through life requires more than a kiss from a prince or diploma.   See, the magic of life is that it gives you clues And if you’re open and seeking you get glimpses of truth And in case it’s still in question, YES you’ve been chosen, you’re forgiven it’s written But you gotta SHOW UP - STAND UP - RISE UP - stop sittin’.   The map to your bliss is to follow it, and keep showing up It’s going to be messy, your hands will shake, you’ll get criticized and you’ll want to throw up Becoming the biggest version of you is the scariest thing you’ll do  You’ll have darkness and pain and some friends will leave you.   But I’m going to let you in on life’s ultimate hack It’s that you get to choose gratitude even when it feels like the universe doesn’t have your back. God wants to use you He guides those who are willing And it’s not up to you to decide if your dream is worth killing   You’ve got a soul contract to live into your life’s call  Don’t worry about failing, you will, it’s a part of it     But you’ve got sisters here to catch you when you fall Choose love Choose forgiveness  Choose courage Choose your truth.   Every single time you show up  It gives more hope for our youth Stay close to what makes you feel ALIVE Don’t just survive  That’s not why you’re here But you gotta continue to do the things that help you get clear.   PAY ATTENTION to soul hits, nudges and winks AND whenever you get them, take action and don’t think Sometimes when I’m quiet, when I’m running, or if Eminem’s rapping I’ll lose myself in the music and feel God start the tapping On three, everybody get up, we’re gonna start clapping   3, 2, 1…   Sister you're a star – you’re a strong girl Playin’ in your gifts - gonna start to change the world today You got glitter on yo' face Your hair’s in place Spreading your magic all over the place   Singin’   We will, we will rise up We will, we will rise up   Follow me on social media @LoriHarder on Instagram and Lori Harder on Facebook
