What happens if you REMOVE every American author from science fiction and fantasy?Do you still have a strong list?Oh yeah… you absolutely do.In this episode of Fantasy for the Ages, we're ranking the Top 25 European SFF Authors since the 1930s—but with one major twist:
Buckle up, fans — this week we're blasting off to a galaxy of laser swords, warp drives, and worlds beyond imagination! Host Jamie Ray is joined by first-time guest Chris from the Longbox Crusade's "Best Under 5" podcast for a conversation that's out of this world. The 1980s were truly the golden age of Science Fiction and Sword & Sorcery on the big screen. It was a decade where anything felt possible — where audiences lined up around the block to watch rebels battle empires across the stars, barbarian warriors clash with sorcerers in ancient lands, and everyday kids stumble into adventures that were anything but ordinary. Practical effects, synth-heavy scores, and pure storytelling ambition made '80s genre films unlike anything before or since. From the gritty darkness of Blade Runner to the thundering heroics of Conan the Barbarian, from the swashbuckling fantasy of Willow and Labyrinth to the pulse-pounding thrills of Aliens and The Terminator — Hollywood was firing on all cylinders, and genre fans were eating it up.Together, Jamie and Chris dig into their Fave Five Sci-Fi & Fantasy Films from this legendary decade. They'll compare lists, defend their picks, and maybe spark a debate or two along the way. From epic space adventures to sword-and-sorcery classics, the '80s gave us movies that defined childhoods, launched franchises, and still hold up decades later. Was your favorite film left off the list? Let us know! And be sure to check out Chris and the crew over at the Longbox Crusade's "Best Under 5" podcast for more great content from a fellow fan.So grab your flux capacitor, fire up the hyperdrive, and hit play — this is one episode you won't want to miss!Find out more about Chris by visiting on X ( https://x.com/blackbeltx21 ) and streaming on YouTube ( https://www.youtube.com/@longboxcrusade/search?query=best%20under )Links can be found on our profile page and at www.linktr.ee/hulkboy. Ever watched a movie and thought…“Wait… WHY did they do it like that?”Today on Fantasy for the Ages, we're diving into the 25 STRANGEST decisions ever made in sci-fi, fantasy, and horror movie history — and yes… these are all real, documented choices that actually happened. From a remake that's basically the exact same movie shot-for-shot, to films released with multiple endings depending on the theater, to actors who didn't even know what was going to happen in their own scenes…
In the another mini-entry, we look at four movies that Spielberg personally oversaw for the different SciFi/Horror/Fantasy audiences and the uncanny reasons why they were all greenlit! FILMS DISCUSSED: Arachnophobia, Deep Impact, A.I. & The BFG TALKING POINTS: *When Steven had soooo much money and wanted to do a James Bond movie, why didn't he just buy the entire franchise? *Will Disney come calling back to Spielberg or vice-versa sometime soon? *Did Spielberg produce Deep Impact as a personal "Screw you!" after an unpleasant BTS encounter with Armageddon star Ben Affleck? *And how these movies mirror the production of his Amazing Stories TV show? GUESTS: Chris Page, Oreo Brewer, Ken Bates, Daniel Ryan, Jon Mark, Dave & Liam (Watch It If You Can) & Mike Ensing MUSIC USED: "Where Dreams Are Born" (From A.I.: Artificial Intelligence) by John Williams
The 2010s were the decade where science fiction and fantasy completely took over Hollywood.
The 2000s were the era of EPIC storytelling in science fiction and fantasy. ⚔️

What are the most underrated sci-fi and fantasy movies ever made?
Russell Berger joins The USDN Podcast to discuss A Knight's Title, his long-running independent sci-fi fantasy saga, and the realities of building a creator-owned universe without the backing of a major publisher. In this conversation, Russell shares how his love of creative writing began in elementary school, how influences like King Arthur, Star Wars, Highlander, anime, and comics helped shape his storytelling, and why A Knight's Title evolved into an episodic format instead of a traditional single-volume release. The episode also explores the business and mindset side of independent creation — from self-publishing out of necessity, to the difficulty of audience growth, to the importance of consistency, branding, and staying connected to readers.Russell also discusses the meaning of knighthood in his universe, the role of “blood abilities” in the story, his plans for future physical editions, and why he believes animation would be the ideal adaptation format for A Knight's Title. This is a strong conversation for anyone interested in indie publishing, worldbuilding, serialized storytelling, and the creator mindset it takes to keep going when no one hands you the opportunity.Follow Russell BergerInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/KingDarkhart Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/KingDarkhart?mibextid=LQQJ4d X: https://x.com/KingDarkhart Official Website: https://www.aknightstitle.com/#indiecomics, #scififantasy, #selfpublishing, #authorinterview, #creatorowned, #worldbuilding, #indieauthor, #podcast, #fantasybooks, #scifiwriter

What makes a great ensemble cast in science fiction, fantasy, and horror TV?It's not just one breakout character. It's chemistry. It's balance. It's a cast where everyone matters—and where removing just one person would collapse the whole story. In this episode, Jim counts down his Top 10 Ensemble Casts in SFFH Television, spanning decades and genres. Rankings are based on a blend of critical reception, fan love, cultural impact, and—let's be honest—Jim's personal opinion. Mileage will vary, and that's part of the fun.We also give some love to a couple of honorable mentions that didn't quite crack the Top 10 but still delivered outstanding ensemble performances.⚔️ Expect praise, snark, hot takes, and probably at least one ranking that makes you say, “Okay Jim… but hear me out.”
The lights are hot, the synths are humming, and the 80s Movie Bracket has reached its glorious endgame. Rob, Dave, and Kurt throw open the studio doors and welcome two heavy hitters of nostalgia, Jim from Children of the 80s and Giff from Pop Culture Yearbook, to help settle an argument that has echoed since VHS rewinds were a workout. Four mighty brackets, Action, Comedy, Sports, and Sci-Fi/Fantasy, have battled through montages, one-liners, and slow-motion triumphs, leaving eight titans standing. This is not a debate, it's a cinematic steel cage match where reputations are on the line and John Williams-level drama hangs in the air. On the final card, Back to the Future squares off against Ghostbusters in a clash of flux capacitors and proton packs, while Die Hard and Predator bring bare-knuckle bravado to the action corner. Comedy sends Coming to America and Three Amigos to the front lines armed with royal swagger and accidental heroics, and sports delivers pure heart with Hoosiers versus The Karate Kid, a battle of gym floors and crane kicks. With Jim and Giff in the mix, every vote carries the weight of mixtapes, sleepovers, and movie posters taped to bedroom walls. One film will rise above them all, crowned the greatest 80s movie of all time, while the rest take a bow to thunderous applause and a perfectly timed guitar riff Pandora: https://pandora.app.link/iq8iShjXOLb Apple: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/totally-80s-and-90s-recall/id1662282694 Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/11dk5TUoLUk4euD1Te1EYG?si=b37496eb6e784408 Amazon Music: https://music.amazon.com/podcasts/1960c8f9-158d-43ac-89a6-d868ea1fe077/totally-80s-and-90s-recall YouTube Podcasts: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLH9lGakNgCDZUkkHMUu88uXYMJu_33Rab&si=xo0EEVJRSwS68mWZ Contact Us: Website: https://totally80s90srecall.podbean.com/ Email: 80s90srecall@gmail.com LinkTree:https://linktr.ee/80s90srecall
We conclude the 12th Season the day after Christmas for a minisode on Luc Besson's SciFi Fantasy Trilogy: The Fifth Element, Lockout & Valerian. Guests Oreo Brewer & Johnny Potoky bring up how these pre-STAR WARS comics and fantasy elements helped these film adaptations come to life in a post-mega blockbuster movie world. Is FIFTH ELEMENT the most successful Bruce Willis film outside of his earlier '90s work (and is Korben Dallas his best role given how it allows him more comedic work while spoofing his DIE HARD ego)? Are these movies perfect examples of paintings that can be reobserved and you find something new from them each time? Is LOCKOUT still a damn fun time no matter which version you watch or did the Snake Plissken/Han Solo hero feel too derivative? And should VALERIAN be given a better re-evaluation in this snobby internet world? Come drive your flying car into space with us as we podcast across the galaxy! Today's guest has joined Anne in conversation on the podcast before, but now our media production specialist Holly Wielkoszewski is in the spotlight as they explore her evolving reading tastes and her favorite genres of science fiction and fantasy. Holly splits her time between New Mexico, where she and her husband are building an Earthship, and traveling internationally for several months each year. When Holly mentioned at a recent team meeting that she's shifting away from fantasy and more towards sci-fi in her reading life lately, Anne couldn't wait to explore that on the air. Today's conversation delves into Holly's evolving journey as a sci-fi fantasy devotee, the trends she's seeing in recent books, and some of her very favorites in these genres. They also explore what appeals to Holly most about these types of books and how she sees the crossover from these genres to other stories she seeks out. This episode highlights a whole bunch of titles that readers who resonate with Holly might also enjoy reading, too. Please let us know if you have ideas for Holly's next sci-fi read or other suggestions by leaving a comment on our show notes page, where we've also listed all of the titles mentioned today. That's at whatshouldireadnextpodcast.com/487. From blue aliens to multiverse dinner parties, join in as I break down the good, the meh, and the massively underrated in sci-fi and fantasy. I'm calling out overrated hits (looking at you, Eternals), celebrating hidden gems like Coherence and The OA, and giving flowers to legends like The Matrix and Stranger Things. Plus, a mini-rant on shows that take forever to come back on and why the Sense8 cancellation still hurts. Beam in and geek out!
Ever feel the need to get away? Perhaps, to a galaxy far, far away? Michiganders did just this past May the 4th. Every year for two weekends a warehouse in Detroit’s Milwaukee Junction neighborhood gets converted into a Star Wars universe. A small army of do-it-yourself artists, makers, and fun-seekers transform a half-block of space into, well, outerspace. The detail is otherworldly – streetscapes closely resembling Tatooine (otherwise known as Luke Skywalker’s home planet), stucco storefronts, dust-covered tents, and cosplay Mandalorians decked with helmets, breastplates, and blaster pistols. Space Dive takes place atTangent Gallery, generally around May 4. There are still tickets available for this weekend’s events. Star Wars attire is mandatory, as declared by the Empire. GUESTS: John Dunivant, co founder of Space Dive Daniel Land, cofounder of Space Dive Eric Heerspink, Grand Rapids ceramist Check out photos from the event here. Hey listeners: This week, everyone gets a taste of what paid supporters will get more regularly—a special Booklab: First Pages episode. Each month (and sometimes more often), we'll choose two “first pages” to review. A first page, for our purposes, is the first 350 words of your book—fiction, non-fiction or memoir. We will read the page aloud on the podcast and discuss with a single thought in mind: Would we keep reading?First pages are incredibly important in every genre. If you can't grab a reader on that first page, you might lose your chance of grabbing them at all. On the podcast, we'll read the page aloud and then each cast our “vote”—would we keep going? Then—and this is the most important bit— we'll discuss why or why not. Were we dying to know what would happen next, or turned off by an info dump? Ready to learn what you have to teach us or ready to see what's on YouTube? Totally on board with a character or uncertain why we were there in the first place? In this episode, we discuss a high-action page of sci-fi/fantasy and then a memoir, and in both—even though we KNOW we told the writers to give us only 350 words… we want more. Not more words—more from THESE words. And we have ideas for how to make that happen. The opportunity to have your first page reviewed is available to our Sticker and Sparkly Star Sticker supporters only. (That's anyone with a monthly or annual subscription via Substack). Always, there's one central question: Would we turn the page? We tell you why or why not, and help these generous, brave writers to make their first pages irresistible—and their examples will help you make your first page sing. This episode is for everyone! But Booklabs (like the one we released in December, discussing a novel with another great first line: Every expensive hotel has its own scent and a memoir of parenting an adult child with addiction) are usually for paid subscribers only. Find the rest HERE. So if you haven't—yet—decided to support the podcast we know you love, now's the perfect time. BUT WAIT THERE IS MORE.I want you to put my first page to the test… but not until I listen to all the others! Not only do paid supporters get Booklab episodes and the ability to submit first pages for consideration for a future episode of Booklabs, they also get monthly AMA's with your hosts (This month is with KJ, coming April 25th). And…. formal announcement coming, but Jennie and I (this is KJ) realized last month that we've both finished a Blueprint and are starting to draft our manuscripts. We're doing a (mostly) weekly series we call Writing the Books (WTB for short), and the first very very personal episode is coming your way April 15. Those will be paywalled, so that we can share everything.Want to submit a first page? Paid subscribers, click HERE for details. This is a public episode. If you'd like to discuss this with other subscribers or get access to bonus episodes, visit amwriting.substack.com/subscribe
Disney's live-action Snow White has officially hit theaters… but the numbers aren't exactly what the Mouse House was hoping for. Kristian Harloff and John Rocha are breaking it all down on today's show! Did the online controversy and social media backlash play a role in Snow White falling short of expectations? Was the movie's reception doomed from the start, or was it a case of audiences just not connecting with another remake? The guys discuss the latest reports showing Snow White pulling in just $43 million domestically and $44.3 million internationally, landing the film at an $87.3 million global total—far under the $65M domestic target. We'll talk about Deadline's comparison to Dumbo, the CinemaScore, and the film's polarizing reactions. Plus, did Rachel Zegler's casting really hurt or help in certain markets? And what about those claims that the film overperformed in conservative counties despite the “Snow Woke” criticism? But that's not all! Kristian and Rocha also cover:
