GUEST BIO: henry bronchtein Henry Bronchtein was born and raised in the Bensonhurst section of Brooklyn, New York, the youngest of three sons of a cab-driver father and a homemaker. Henry attended New York University's Tisch School of The Arts to study filmmaking. Perhaps his first big break was working on Raging Bull (1980), as the apprentice assistant director to fellow NYU alumnus, Martin Scorsese. "As a child I was an avid reader, devouring every novel and every comic book put in front of me. I am a member of the first generation to be raised on television. Growing up my favorite shows were Rod Serling 's The Twilight Zone (1959), Alfred Hitchcock Presents (1955), I Love Lucy (1951), and The Honeymooners (1955). I particularly loved Jackie Gleason''s vision of the working-class life of a bus driver living in Bensonhurst. It not only made me laugh it seemed to illustrate and illuminate my life. "When I was sick, my mother would go to the corner candy store and buy every comic book on the stand for me. She would install me on the living room couch, in front of the TV with them. There I'd lay with a blanket, a pillow and a glass of hot tea laced with a teaspoon of cognac; this was the prescription for healing. I would rest there for hours, reading and watching television, engrossed in the worlds of drama and comedy. At an early age I experienced their ability to reach me in important ways." ### For over 35 years, Beth Kushnick has created character-driven settings for countless award-winning television series and feature films. If you were a kid of the late 80s or early 90s then today's guest definitely had an impact on your life. Larry Wilson is the co-creator of the cult classic Beetlejuice (directed by Tim Burton), writer of Addams Family and worked on the legendary television show Tales from the Crypt.Larry wasn't always a screenwriter, he worked on the studio side of things as well as an executive. In this interview, he tells the story of how he championed a young and pre-Terminator James Cameron to be the writer/director of Aliens. Great story! Check out some of his work below:Larry Wilson was also a screenwriting teacher at UCLA, arguably one of the best screenwriting programs in the world. He has continued to teach through his very popular workshops. His latest workshop Larry Wilson's Method to Madness-A Fantasy and Horror Workshop is filling up quick so sign up. Here's a bit about the workshop. As your teacher, my goal is to inspire leaps of imagination by creating an environment that resembles an awesome story conference—the kind myself and my partners experienced while creating Beetlejuice. First, that means we're allowed to be strange—I'll encourage your creative quirks and far-out ideas, as long as they're entertaining and help to tell your story. I'll be your guide for workshop writing assignments, role playing games, and group journeys through the dark realms that will keep you engaged and entertained while you're creating your best story—ever! We'll jump off the creative cliffs together. What I won't be doing is lecturing for hours, hoping you're staying awake. And, even if we're talking about the darkest story in the world, I'll make sure we're having fun (if we're not laughing, it's not happening). There's a method to my madness, I promise, and I also promise that you'll enjoy the ride.Below you'll find the episode of Alfred Hitchcock Presents that both Larry Wilson and Tim Burton worked on together and started their Beetlejuice adventures. Marta Kristen was born Birgit Annalisa Rusanen, on February 26, 1945, in Oslo, Norway, to a Finnish mother and a German soldier who was killed towards the end of World War II in Europe. Marta was only two months old when she was left in an orphanage. In 1949, Dr. and Mrs. Harold Soderquist of Detroit, Michigan adopted her, and brought her to America; she was renamed Martha Soderquist. In 1959, the family moved to L.A. and she attended Santa Monica High School for a year; she later graduated from Hollywood Professional School. Producer/director James B. Harris discovered the pretty, petite aspiring actress; he arranged for her to get an agent, and she was quickly booked for TV programs, such as Alfred Hitchcock Presents and The Loretta Young Show (aka "The New Loretta Young Show"). In 1963, Marta met a graduate student and, 6 months later, they got married. Her career took off and she made a splash as the mermaid "Lorelei" in Beach Blanket Bingo. She would be best-known and remembered, however, for her signature role of "Judy Robinson" in Lost in Space.  Marta is also known for her work in Battle Beyond the Stars, Murphy Brown, Fame and Trapper John.    Want to watch: YouTube Meisterkhan Pod (Please Subscribe)

53 | The Money Changed Everything

The Gentle Rebel Podcast

Where does your mind go when you read the phrase, "The money changed everything"? In this episode of The Gentle Rebel Podcast, I want to share points from our recent Haven discussion when we used this prompt to chat and play. Where did the money come from? What difference did it make? Before our gathering, I stumbled on an episode of Alfred Hitchcock Presents called "Reward to Finder". The story is about Carl, who finds some money in a gutter on his way home from work. Instead of returning it to its rightful owner (in exchange for an unspecified reward), as he promised his wife, Anna, he keeps it hidden in his attic. Eventually, Anna discovers that he is counting the money and demands a share. She threatens to go to the police if Carl doesn't comply. As she spends the money, the situation escalates. Ultimately, they both decide to take action. This changes everything. It was like poison; it got into our bloodstream.Normal life became something obscene. We couldn't see straight. I lost you in the haze.Neighbours hear banging through the walls of this doorless maze.A dark cloud hanging like a fur coat.In limbo, awaiting the verdict. Words inspired by Reward to Finder The story highlights a familiar scenario we may have encountered in various situations. The arrival of money can often trigger possessiveness, control, greed, and envy, causing relationships to crumble. This can happen dramatically, as depicted in the story, or gradually over time. Over time, resentments build up, stories take hold in the characters' minds, beliefs shift, values change, and people stop seeing people. Instead, they see obstacles, hindrances, opportunities, and gold mines. But perhaps, instead of bringing about fundamental changes, money reveals what was already there. But The Money Can Make a Positive Difference It was interesting to notice how my personal response to the prompt had a negative flavour. This attitude might be called "Why does money always ruin good things?" There are many examples of this. But I wanted to explore how money can positively change everything. That would be the first place people go in response to the prompt. An unexpected gift that took the pressure off or saved the day, approval for the loan that got the business off the ground, or the grant that transformed the community. What Would You Choose To Do If Money Wasn't an Obstacle? What Would You Choose To Do If Money Wasn't an Obstacle? is a classic coaching question. But it's also an interesting one to dissect. The responses seem to vary depending on whether having a vision precedes the availability of funds or vice versa. On one hand, we may ask, "What is something you would love to do but can't due to a lack of resources?" Perhaps there is a particular project you would love to undertake, a place you would like to visit, or changes you would like to make. In other words, if you had the money, you would know exactly what to spend it on. For me, it's finishing my album. Incidentally, if you have £5000 lying around (or know someone who does), gimme a shout! The other way of reading the question is, "If you suddenly came into a chunk of money, what would you do with it?" It's the "What would you do if you won the lottery?" question. Responses tend to be more vague. We would "probably" buy this or that, replace some stuff, give it away, or invest it. The possibilities are broader, but they are also potentially less focused. A Highly Sensitive Drive To Enable There was a thread in our discussion as we imagined the difference money could make in enabling desirable stuff to emerge in the world around us. Once the bills are taken care of and there's enough yarn to knit with, we might look beyond our personal situation and into families, neighbourhoods, and communities, where money could change things for good. Unconditional Giving This opened a conversation about gifts. Some people love giving but are uncomfortable receivi...

It's Thriller Thursday and this week it's a story published in 1957 in the hardback anthology, “Alfred Hitchcock Presents: Stories They Wouldn't Let Me Do On TV”. Written by Arthur Williams, the story was also used and adapted for “The Late Alfred Hitchcock Presents” radio show for the BBC in 2010 as part of the five part series of dramatizations of stories deemed too unsuitable for the original Alfred Hitchcock Presents television series. If Alfred Hitchcock liked it this much, and the TV networks thought it was too much for audiences in the mid 1950's… I can only assume it will be just perfect for our consumption.SOURCES AND REFERENCES FROM THE EPISODE…“Being a Murderer Myself” by Arthur Williams, from the anthology “Alfred Hitchcock Presents Stories They Wouldn't Let Me Do On TV”: https://amzn.to/2U59cIYWeird Darkness theme by Alibi Music Library.= = = = =(Over time links seen above may become invalid, disappear, or have different content.
