A podcast made by, for, and about Beatles fans.
It's time for another episode of Fans On The Run! Joining me today is another fellow young-er Beatle fan, musician/influencer Mary Devlin! (aka @beatledirt) We cover a lot, including making friends on The Beatles' Facebook page back in the day, posing out front of the Apple store with the Beatle standees when they went to iTunes, Ethan's "Now And Then" Abbey Road Studios story, the evolution of online Beatles fandom, Pattie Boyd's everlasting style, another round of praising "Revolver", the existential dread of being "cringe", drawing a gap in your teeth on with makeup, and so much more! This episode is available to stream wherever good podcasts can be heard! Welcome back to one of the Beatle podcasts of all time, Fans On The Run! Would it really be FoTR without an unexplained months-long episode delay? (School, that's the explanation) Joining me today is somebody who influenced me as a young(er) fan back when she was a part of the YouTube fan-collab-channel "The Beatle Submarine". She has come out of "retirement" to appear on this very show and talk with yours truly, give a big FoTR welcome to Karen Castro! We talk about nearly everything, including the path that led to this very episode, "gameifying" the official Beatles website, a new honourable term for somebody who pirates music, falling in love with The Beatles' music on a broken set of speakers, the trials and tribulations of being a teenage content creator, the popularity of rock 'n' roll in Latin & South America, the horns on 'Savoy Truffle', yet another rant about the booklet from the 'Magical Mystery Tour' LP, the 2023 'Red' and 'Blue' remixes, general Gen-Z shenanigans, and a new fourth-wall-shattering record for most asides to you, the listener! This episode is available to stream wherever good podcasts can be heard! Follow us elsewhere: https://linktr.ee/fansontherun Contact: fansontherunpodcast@gmail.com
Dear Beatle People, it's time for a very fab, gear, and overall special episode of Fans On The Run: The Podcast Made By, For, And About Beatles Fans! Today's episode has been a long time coming, but as they say, "good things come to those who wait". Our guest today was a member of The Beatles inner circle, in various roles for ten whole years, from 1962 to 1972. From the Cavern Club and the early days with Brian Epstein, to the Magical Mystery Tour of the days of Apple Corps. Please give a big Fans On The Run welcome to Freda Kelly! This is a very special episode, so you won't want to miss it! This episode is available to stream wherever good podcasts can be heard! It is in fact, time for the new episode of Fans On The Run! The show made by, for, and about Beatles fans - and today we lean into fandom as our guest today quite literally "wrote the book" on Beatles fandom. He's the author of "The Beatles and Fandom: Sex, Death and Progressive Nostalgia", Dr. Richard Mills! Besides sex, death and progressive nostalgia, we talk about "The Grey Album" by Danger Mouse, applying Freudian psychological concepts to The Beatles Monthly, the hopes and fears around A.I., The Beatles in the internet age, a fourth-wall break in the "Free As A Bird" music video, capitalism, electricity, pondering what John Lennon would think of modern Beatles books, and much, much more! It's time for another far-out, cosmic episode of Fans On The Run! Joining me today is the former co-host of fellow-pod Nothing Is Real, Steven Cockcroft! In this conversational trip around the astral planes, we talk about the booklet that came with the Magical Mystery Tour album, the good and bad of the Moog synthesizer on Abbey Road, the feeling of retribution when a favourite song becomes very popular, why the White Album should have been three discs, Mark Lewisohn, bending the rules of the “desert-island picks” scenario, the most polite protest song of all time, and the perfect sentiment for the chaotic world we find ourselves in: what would Donovan do? It's time to spin a new episode of Fans On The Run! My guest for today is social-media content-creator, and fellow record-collector, Vinyl Benjy! We talk about export pressings, the “olden days” of buying CDs at Best Buy, the best deals we've found record shopping, the effect of certain YouTubers on record prices, whether to recommend Let It Be or Get Back to new Beatles fans, Freda Kelly, The Monkees, vinyl cuttings, why we collect so many copies of the same album, and the least effective game of show-and-tell ever recorded! It's time for another episode of Fans On The Run, the "raccoon in the garbage bin" of Beatle podcasts! Joining me today (technically it was a while ago, but today is when it is posted!) is one of the co-hosts of fellow pod 'Another Kind Of Mind', Phoebe Lorde! In this wide-ranging chat we discuss the genesis of AKOM, the 1987 documentary "It Was Twenty Years Ago Today", A Beatle book neither of us know the name of, why the term "granny music" needs to die, The Beatles' covers of songs by the girl-groups, the "too many cooks" situation at Capitol Records circa 1965, and a certain denim-outerwear related phrase. It's once again time (about time!) for another episode of Fans On The Run! Joining me today is my friend, and the host of "Mixology: The Mono/Stereo Differences Podcast", Frederick French-Pounce! In what turned out to be the longest gap between recording a show, and posting it, this episode covers everything from the pros/cons of records made in the US/UK, Cilla Black's 1969 single "Surround Yourself With Sorrow", the YouTube videos on The Beatles that captured our imaginations, a Kinks album with no lead vocals, the vinyl resurgence, the rumours about a "potential reissue of the '1962-1966' and '1967-1970' albums" and much, much more! In fact, so much more, that from time to time, the spooky voices of future-Ethan and future-Fred reflect on stuff that happened between when we recorded the show, and now! To borrow a TV term welcome to a "spin-off"! This is a monthly installment where two music geeks (Andy & Ethan) discuss their favourite albums by artists other than the Beatles. (What a refreshing idea!) As we are both hardcore Who fans (Ethan = 60s Who, Andy = 70s Who) we decided our first show should center in on the Who's 3rd studio LP "The Who Sell Out". Tying in with the recently released Super Deluxe Box Set celebrating the album we felt this was a good starting point. We also discuss the post "Sell Out" but pre-Tommy period of 1968 and what an odd ball period it was for the group. We may actually like the jingles better than the songs! Impersonations, accents, bad singing it's all here. It’s time for another episode of Fans On The Run, and today it’s going to get a little abstract! Joining me is the new youngest Beatle podcast host on the block, Hudson Ranney of ‘I Know I Know: A Solo Beatles Videocast’. We talk about wearing out a mint ’67 pressing of Sgt. Pepper, yours truly warbling out the lyrics to ‘If I Had A $1,000,000’ by The Barenaked Ladies, record stores with bad Beatles sections, sentimental attachments to certain Paul McCartney albums, the now-out-of-print LP of ‘Live In Japan’, a distracted host texting his friend about the aforementioned ‘Live In Japan’ LP, how modern Beatle fans about “that one John Lennon song with the n-word in the title”, and puns, puns, puns and puns. Oh, so many puns. It’s a wild ride, so strap in, and don’t miss it! This episode is available to stream wherever good podcasts can be heard! Joining me today is a longtime music journalist, and author of the ‘Let It Be’ installment of the 33 1/3 series of books, Steve Matteo! We cover a lot of topics including the joys of Graham Nash, the age old fear of the tape recorder not working during an important interview, lavish box sets from John Mayall and King Crimson, a cancelled 2004 DVD release of the ‘Let It Be’ film, the slow collapse of The Beatles and their inner circle, the Shea Stadium concert recording and why it hasn’t been released properly in a long time, potential dream Beatle releases, the pack mentality of the music press, and in a roundabout way, the first ever FoTR call in! No rest for the wicked, Fans On The Run is back! Joining me as my guest for today is a fan, an author and one of very few outsiders to appear on a Beatle record, Lizzie Bravo! Much, much more! This episode is available to stream wherever good podcasts can be heard! I recently had the opportunity to sit down again with my friend “Whispering Bob” Harris for another wonderful chat! We talked about the sixties British pirate radio stations, the last radio performance of Syd Barrett, the origins of the Time Out magazine, the vinyl release of Stand By Me 2020, a trivia game about Bob’s favourite record label, and much more! Check it out, why don’t you? This interview is available everywhere podcasts can be heard! It’s time for another episode of Fans On The Run, and sadly it’s gonna be the last for about a month! I’ll be taking a much needed break, and not use my vocal chords the entire duration of it (or something like that). That being said, today’s (should have been yesterday, but oh well) episode is a great one. Joining me is the host of New England’s Breakfast With The Beatles, Cha-Chi Loprete! We talk about gifted butcher covers, mailing records to George Harrison to be signed, the expensive (for 1970) “All Things Must Pass” box, dinner at John Eastman’s house with Paul, how he got started in radio, the DJs he remembers that inspired him, and so much more! Much like James Bond, FoTR will return. This episode is available to stream wherever good podcasts can be heard! Oh, hey there, it’s time for another episode of Fans On The Run! Joining me today is singer/songwriter/fellow Canadian, Max Comeau! We talk about a re-introduction to The Beatles thru “Reel Music”, memories of the hype surrounding “Free As A Bird” and “Anthology”, Sam The Record Man, ruining a concert experience with setlist websites, the influence of Paul on Max’s music, getting to know yourself through a Beatles song, “Dear Eloise” by The Hollies, and a rather shaky attempt at pandering to my Québec audience! It’s time for another groovy episode of Fans On The Run! Joining me today is the co-host of BC The Beatles, the fabulous Allison Boron! We’re all over the place here talking about the 1993 fatboy jewel-case versions of the Red and Blue albums, old Angelfire domain names, getting into The Beatles through The Monkees, the early Beatles internet fan community, the everlasting appeal of the story of Brian Epstein, price-gouged Woodstock box sets, sexism in the Beatle-world, the late great Limewire, and much, much more! Woohoo, it’s Friday! Time for a new episode of everybody’s favourite (citation needed) Beatles podcast, Fans On The Run! Joining me today for what is now the longest single part episode of the show, is a member of the tribute band BeatleBeat, and veteran of the Floridian Beatles tribute scene, Charlie De Cosa! We talk about a lot of things in this episode, like we really cover a lot of ground. We talk about not getting used to hearing Sgt. Pepper with pops or crackles, reflecting on purging a vinyl collection back in the era of CDs, a brief lesson on the history of NRBQ, the scattered re-runs of The Beatles cartoon in the Eighties, ‘Kiss Meets The Phantom Of The Park’, learning to love your Höfner, separating the art from the artist, guilty pleasure bands, cheating in Nickelodeon phone-in competitions, the mystical world of Parrothead-ism, the stereotype of the “florida man”, the chaotic nature of The Who’s early music videos, and for the first time in the show’s history, a joke so offensive I had to bleep it out. This episode is available to stream everywhere good podcasts can be heard! Friday is here once again, and so is Fans On The Run. Joining me today is the author of the long-awaited forthcoming book “Little Wing: The Jimmy McCulloch Story”, Paul Salley, and much like Jimmy himself, this episode is short but sweet! (by FoTR standards) We talk about some notorious Jimmy myths including “that photo from that one book”, the paradox of owning a Beatle calendar before listening to their music, the Wingspan documentary, the moniker of “that Beatles kid” at school being passed down through the generations, how Jimmy joined, then subsequently left The Small Faces in less than a year, the magic of the band One In A Million, and of course some talk about that one band (hint: Denny Laine was in it for a while) and much more! This episode is available to stream wherever good podcasts can be heard! It’s time for another episode of the show that doesn’t stop, Fans On The Run! Joining me today is a veteran of YouTube’s “vinyl community”, Marvin Gee, also known as Beatlevinyl85! We have an absolute vinyl-geek-fest today talking about everything from the social dynamic of the local record store, seeing the Free As A Bird video for the first time, the allure of imports, the absolute anomaly that is “The Beatles In Italy”, holy grails, the perks of being a second generation collector, “The Beatles Vs. The Four Seasons”, Canadian records with alternate mixes, the true stereo version of "Yesterday and Today", and much, much more! It’s time for another “fab” episode of Fans On The Run! It is Friday, after all. I’m joined by my co-host over on “When They Was Fab: Electric Arguments About The Beatles”, Ed Chen! (Although, this episode was recorded before I was officially announced as a co-host) In this episode we talk about the supply and demand of Rutles 8 Track Tapes, the Bee Gees’ Sgt. Pepper “selling gold, and returning platinum”, attractive hype stickers, the origins of the term “Dutch Import” in terms of bootlegs, nefarious laughing, the post Beatlefest ratings boost for the Beatle podcats, the laziness of the 1988 Imagine movie, “My Ding-A-Ling”, a plugging misfire, and three different technical failures that were fixed in the edit! All that and more, you absolutely need to listen! This episode (as well as When they Was Fab) can be streamed anywhere good podcasts can be heard!) https://whentheywasfab.podbean.com/ Follow us elsewhere:https://linktr.ee/fansontherun
It’s the first proper episode of Fans On The Run of 2021, and this time I have the right year in the episode graphic! Joining me today to chat co-wrote the legendary books “LENNONOLOGY – Strange Days Indeed” and “Eight Arms To Hold You: The Solo Beatles Compendium”, Chip Madinger! We talk about the last few Beatles deluxe editions, “The Beatles At The Beeb” series, Chip’s involvement with The Capitol Albums boxes in the mid 2000s, the utter confusion that is the many versions of Band On The Run on CD, the pre-internet research process for the original version of Eight Arms, some highlights of his vast collection, documenting the life of John down to the day, and the mystical world of bootlegs, among many other things! This episode is available to stream wherever good podcasts can be heard! As the clock strikes twelve, a new year dawns. As the new year approaches, so does this very special celebratory 50th episode special of Fans On The Run! Friend of the show (and "queen of all Beatles media" Kit O'Toole joins us once again, but to flip the script of the show and ask me about my Beatles story! We talk about being mesmerized by the track number changing on my CD player during my first listen of the "Blue Album", indoctrinating several friends to this band on the playground, driving across town in a desperate search of the DVD for “A Hard Day’s Night”, my Michael Jackson phase of music, the genesis of this show, seeing purple Kool Aid when I first walked into the Fest For Beatles Fans and fearing the worst, long-term plans for the show, bailing out Ken Womack in a trivia contest, some special messages, and a big announcement from yours truly, along with much, much more! Special thanks to Jim and Susan Ryan, The Fab Four, Mean Mr. Mayo, Ken Michaels, Tom Hunyady, Andy Nicholes, Ed Chen, Lonnie Pena, Jude Southerland Kessler, Lanea Stagg, Plastic E.P., Nathan Loo, Sam Whiles, Richard Philip, and (of course) Kit O'Toole for contributing to this very special episode! “Every time a bell rings, a podcast meets some Wings” It’s a Christmas miracle, the special finale to the Christmas-lead-up-two-a-week-episode-schedule of Fans On The Run! You may be sad that we’ll be going back down to once a week, but today we have a guest who will not disappoint. It’s Laurence Juber! We talk about his start as a session musician in the 70s, his guitar influences, a crash course in pre-decimal British money, December 1963 (no, not the Four Seasons song), how he became a Wing-man, what started his Beatles fingerstyle guitar album series, the terminology describing Lute players, the guitar he bought before that fateful trip to Japan in 1980, Christmas Music, and much, much more! This episode is available to stream anywhere good podcasts can be heard! Keep up with Laurence:https://laurencejuber.com/ Follow us elsewhere:https://linktr.ee/fansontherun
It’s beginning to look a lot like, a new episode of your favourite show, Fans On The Run! In this episode, I’m joined by a New York Times bestselling author, and the co-host of fellow podcast The Beatles Naked, Richard Buskin! We talk about Beatles political cartoons, “Swinging London” and Carnaby Street, practicing the “Lennon Stance” with a plastic Beatle toy guitar, the joys of Sixties pirate radio, a bizarre tale of a school performance of “All You Need Is Love” in the summer of love, the most extensive mention of Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick & Tich that this show has ever seen, Richard’s tailor father making suits for The Troggs to wear on “Top Of The Pops”, how he got a bestselling book in the USA, and the emotional response to seeing Paul McCartney getting mobbed outside the MPL offices, and more! It’s Friday, so you already know there’s gonna be a new episode of FoTR coming right at you! Joining me today, is a very prevalent member of the Beatles social media world, an ambassador of sorts of the 60s fashion revival, and fellow member of the “new generation”, Connie Mclean! We talk about shouting suggestive comments at The Rolling Stones on stage, sexism within the greater Beatles community, “McLennon”, that time she saw Paul, Ringo and Ronnie Wood at the O2, dancing around the fact I have not seen “Almost Famous”, the differences in pronunciation of “Beatles” across the Atlantic, the correct answer to ‘what’s your favourite Led Zeppelin album?’, and this show’s tendency to ramble on a bit. All that and more? You’d be insane not to listen! This episode is available to stream wherever good podcasts can be heard!
