(S4-Ep10)The Beatles: Sgt. Peppers Lonely Heart's Club Band (Parlophone/Capitol) Released May 26, 1967, Recorded Between December 6, 1966 and April 21, 1967 Summary Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (1967), the Beatles' eighth studio album, revolutionized rock music and became a defining cultural moment. Combining psychedelic rock, art rock, and avant-garde techniques, it's often considered the first concept album. Created during intense studio experimentation, it marked the Beatles' shift from live performances to studio-bound artistry. The album's groundbreaking production featured innovative techniques like direct injection recording, backward sounds, and orchestration, setting new standards for the music industry. Its vivid, psychedelic cover art, designed by Peter Blake, became iconic, and the album's impact shaped the 1967 Summer of Love.Sgt. Pepper produced hits likeLucy in the Sky with Diamonds andA Day in the Life, blending influences such as Indian music and Western rock. Despite internal tensions, particularly with George Harrison and Ringo Starr feeling sidelined, the album received universal acclaim and won four Grammy Awards, including Album of the Year—the first rock album to do so. Its cultural influence is immeasurable, inspiring future generations of artists and solidifying the Beatles' legacy. For many,Sgt. Pepper's remains the pinnacle of rock music, reshaping the possibilities of popular music and continuing to captivate listeners with every play.Signature Tracks:A Little Help From Friends,Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds,A Day In The Life. The grandfather of British Pop Art, Sir Peter Blake is one of most influential and popular artists of his generation. A Royal Academician with work in the national collection, including Tate and the National Portrait Gallery, he is renowned for paintings and collages that borrow imagery from advertising, cinema and music. Having created The Beatles' Sgt Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band sleeve in 1967 he became the go-to album designer for other musical artists including The Who, Paul Weller, Madness and Oasis. He was knighted for services to art in 2002.Sir Peter tells John Wilson how, after a working class upbringing in Dartford, Kent, he won a place at the Royal College of Art alongside fellow students Bridget Riley and Frank Auerbach. He recalls being influenced by early American pop artists including Jasper Johns and Robert Rauschenberg, and how he began making art inspired by everyday popular imagery. He chooses Dylan Thomas's 1954 radio play Under Milk Wood as a work which captivated his imagination and later inspired a series of his artworks based on the characters, and also cites Max Miller, the music hall artist known as 'the Cheeky Chappie'; as a creative influence. Sir Peter remembers how he made the iconic Sgt Pepper sleeve using waxwork dummies and life size cut-out figures depicting well-known people chosen by Peter and The Beatles themselves. Producer: Edwina PitmanArchive used: Under Milk Wood by Dylan Thomas, performed by Richard Burton, BBC Third Programme, 25 Jan 1954 Max Miller, introduced by Wilfred Pickles at the Festival of Variety, BBC Light Programme, 6 May 1951 Max Miller archive from Celebration, The Cheeky Chappie, BBC Radio 4, 3 July 1974 Monitor: 89: Pop Goes The Easel, BBC1, 25 March 1962 Peter Blake: Work in Progress, BBC2, 21 February 1983 Newsnight, BBC2, 7 February 1983 Ian Dury, Peter the Painter
For his first exhibition in London in over 20 years, New York-based artist Jack Pierson presents a new series of works at Lisson Gallery that explores love, kinship, celebration, poetry, youth, and identity. Pierson diverted from the path of documentary photographers that he studied with in Boston, and was instead drawn to punk-influenced performativity, embracing non-linear, spontaneous compilations that prioritise the expression of individual freedoms over existing narratives. He has since, through a multi-disciplinary practice, challenged conventional hierarchies by commingling mediums equally. Featuring his signature word sculptures, photographs, YELLOW ARRAY, MALE ARRAY, FEMALE ARRAY, DRAWING ARRAY (all 2024), and a series of folded photographic works, a journey through the exhibition invites viewers into a world where narratives, intimate and autobiographical, interact with those distinctly universal and inclusive. A yellow hue echoes throughout the exhibition – a shift from Pierson's typical blue, pink and grayscale themes – the centrepiece of this being YELLOW ARRAY (2024). A coalescence of archival pigment prints, C-type prints, cylindrical magnets, folded pigment prints, found posters, galvanized metal, paper, spray and watercolour paint, these large-scale compositions, spanning ten by fifteen-foot panels, intricately incorporate magazine pages, photographs, drawings, vintage poster and other ephemera, both personal and unfamiliar. Pierson's meticulous process of addition and rearrangement of diverse components – either produced by Pierson himself or discovered during his travels – mirrors that of a collector; each material is afforded a prominent presence within the whole. Pierson is acclaimed for his evocative word-sculptures and installations created by re-appropriating commercial signage and large-scale vintage lettering. The first word sculpture in the exhibition is titled PETER BLAKE (2024), named after the leading English visual artist who, having created the design for multiple iconic musical records including The Beatles' 1967 album ‘Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band' and the 2012 Brit Award statuette, became a key figure in the pop art movement. Pierson's sculpture embodies the connection between the two artists – one which began in the 1960s when the young artist first encountered the work of Peter Blake distributed in the media. Years later, the artists would meet, with Blake inviting Pierson to visit his studio – an encounter that left a lasting impression on both. Blake himself was inspired to create a series of word sculptures bearing Pierson's name: Appropriating Jack Pierson, Copying Jack Pierson and Borrowing from Jack Pierson (all 2002).While Pierson has been profoundly inspired by the work of Peter Blake – his own sculptural homage suggesting echoes of the playful and colourful arrangements of Blake's work – this is the first time he has reciprocated this creative exchange by producing a word piece that directly references this history. Peter Blake also carries the legacy of the transformative period of cultural exchange between the UK and US in the 1960s, intertwining personal history with wider cultural influences. The exchange between Pierson and Blake serves as a testament to the power of artistic inspiration and collaboration, transcending time and distance to create connections within the ever-evolving landscape of contemporary art. Who was Pauline Boty? With her blonde, backcombed hairstyle and It Girl charm, this pioneer of Pop Art embodied the 1960s scene in London, hanging with Bob Dylan, posing for David Bailey, and acting with Michael Caine in the film Alfie. As a new generation discovers her work, Danielle Radojcin and guests explore the tragically short life and burgeoning legacy of this extraordinary woman. Born in 1938 in Croydon, Boty studied at The Royal Academy and became a part of the nascent British pop art movement, along with the likes of Peter Blake and Derek Boshier. In the words of the writer Michael Bracewell, “She seemed to embody the early days of the Pop Age.” During her tragically short life, she produced an exciting and complex body of work, commenting on pop culture, feminism and so much of the era in which she lived, and much of which has been assembled for an exhibition at the Gazelli Art House in Mayfair, where this recording took place. Danielle Radojcin discusses Pauline Boty with Mila Askarova, owner of Gazelli Art House and curator of the exhibition; Vinny Rawding , film director of a new, soon to be released documentary about Boty; and the curator and art historian Sue Tate, author of a biography on Boty's life.Episode artwork: Michael Ward, Untitled (Men Only Cover Shot), 1963/2023. Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the law, love is the law, love under will, there is no law beyond Do what thou wilt Aleister Crowley died in 1947 at the age of seventy-two, he was cremated, and he left behind a philosophy that'd change occult circles forever. For twenty years after his death, his name and his voluminous writings remained for the most part undiscovered by many, then, on June 1st 1967, Crowleys face emerged, peering out at us from between the faces of Indian holy man Swami Sri Yukteswar and sex goddess Mae West, yes, I'm referring to the Beatles' album cover of Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. The cover art was the creation of artist Peter Blake, but the inclusion of Aleister Crowley was because John Lennon “liked” the poetry of the “wickedest man in the world”. I am not in any way suggesting that the Beatles gave rise to the popularity in Crowley in occult circles, what I am saying however, is that those, and their contemporaries, were among the first to react to a dramatic shift in human consciousness. What I'm saying, with regards to shifting human consciousness is not a new concept, the ancients believed in ages, such as the Golden Age, when humanity walked with the gods, or the Dark Age, when the gods abandoned us. Hindus believe in ages called Yugas, wherein there's the rise and fall of cycles over thousands of millennia as our entire solar system careens around the galactic center in a huge elliptical orbit. Astrologers relate it to the zodiac, wherein we've left the Age of Pisces into the Age of Aquarius. But Crowley, he believed in Aeons, such as the Aeon of Isis, which was when mankind worshipped a great goddess, symbolized through Isis, then into the Aeon of Osiris, wherein mankind worshipped a singular male God, symbolized through Osiris, however, Thelemites now believe we're in the Aeon of Horus, the individualistic Crowned and Conquering Child god, in this Aeon, Thelemites believe that humanity shall leave behind the supposed tyranny of Abrahamic religions and enter a time of greater consciousness and self-actualization. Now you may ask why I've said all this, well this information illustrates the root point of understanding this religion, which is that over the past hundred or so years there has been a profound transfiguration in human consciousness, and now we're all functioning at a completely new level than we used to, and that religion I refer to… is Thelema. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/thoughtrebellion/support

This week we're celebrating the festive season by talking to Christina Makris about fabulous places to eat out. Christina, an art and wine writer, a doctor of philosophy, an art collector, and a philanthropist, has scoured the world to find the best combination of art and food. She's traveled to 100 cities over six continents and come up with a list of 24 – all collated in a beautiful new illustrated book called ‘Aesthetic Dining, The Art Restaurant Around the World'. She's dedicated a section of the book to talking to artists, alongside Tim Marlow of The Design Museum, where you can read what artists like Ai Weiwei Anthony Gormley, Conrad Shawcross, Damien Hirst, Gary Hume, David Hockney, Maggi Hambling, Julian Schnabel, Michael Craig-Martin, Peter Blake and Tracey Emin think about food. We talk to Christina as she's about to have lunch at The Gunton Arms in Norfolk, owned by the art collector turned restaurateur Ivor Braka. She describes the art there and the glorious, enticing atmosphere, which guaranteed The Gunton Arms made it into the book. The London restaurants are Langans, The Ivy, Mr. Chow, Scott's, Hix, Sketch and the members' club Groucho, now owned by Hauser & Wirth. This is a riveting listen about the best combinations of art and food across the globe from Sydney and Cairo to Zurich and Tuscany and we discuss everything from Peter Langan's legacy in London to her favourite spots to eat from La Colombe d'Or in Saint-Paul de Vence in Provence to Kronenhalle in Zurich.

Award-winning novelist, playwright and short story writer Ali Smith is the author of 12 novels, three of which have been nominated for the Booker Prize for Fiction. Her best-selling How To Be Both won the Women's Prize for Fiction and the Costa Novel of the Year in 2014. Brought up in the Scottish Highlands, she was the youngest of five children in a working class family, studied English at Aberdeen University and began writing fiction whilst studying for a doctorate at Cambridge. Ali Smith tells John Wilson about the influence of cinema on her fiction, particularly the work of French new wave director Jacques Rivette whose disregard for conventional linear narrative in films including Céline and Julie Go Boating made a big impression. She also recalls how, as an aspiring writer, the work of fellow Scottish novelists and poets, including Liz Lochhead, Alistair Gray, James Kelman and Muriel Spark, helped give her the confidence to write her own fiction. Ali Smith also discusses 1960s pop artist Pauline Boty, a contemporary of Peter Blake and David Hockney, who tragically died at the age of 28 in 1966. Boty's life and work - overlooked for three decades after she died - became a central aspect of Ali Smith's 2016 novel Autumn, the first of a quartet of seasonal-themed books written and published over four years. Producer: Edwina Pitman
