When Dr. Edwin Simpson began his career as a veterinarian for champion racehorses, he never imagined he'd one day be formulating cutting-edge supplements for humans. But that's exactly what happened. Over decades of working with elite animals suffering from stress fractures and performance fatigue, Dr. Simpson developed natural, plant-based formulas to strengthen bones and accelerate healing. What began as a mission to support equine health eventually became something much bigger—after clients began asking, “Can I take this too?” The answer became Alexsyn, a supplement company rooted in science, real-world results, and a deep understanding of how the body heals from within. Now, at the forefront of his human health product line is a revolutionary bone support formula called RevOsteo—a product that may very well change how we age, move, and stay strong. The Problem Most of Us Never See Coming By the time we reach our 50s, most of us are already losing bone density—and we don't even know it. “Osteoporosis is known as the silent killer,” Dr. Simpson says. “You don't feel your bones weakening—until you fall, fracture something, or get a DEXA scan that shocks you.” In fact, over 54 million Americans have low bone mass, and 1 in 2 women over 50 will break a bone due to osteoporosis. Yet the traditional approach—calcium supplements and hope—isn't cutting it. That's where RevOsteo comes in. Why RevOsteo Is Different RevOsteo is not another calcium supplement. In fact, it doesn't include calcium at all. “Most people get enough calcium from food,” says Dr. Simpson. “The real issue is whether your body is absorbing and using it effectively.” RevOsteo is designed to do what calcium alone can't: stimulate new bone formation, reduce bone loss, and support long-term skeletal health. Its formula is built around three powerful, synergistic ingredients: Icarin – A plant compound from Epimedium that boosts the activity of osteoblasts (cells that build bone) while suppressing osteoclasts (cells that break bone down). Beta-glucans – Known for their immune-supporting and anti-inflammatory properties, they also help regulate bone metabolism. Vitamin K2 (MK-7) – Guides calcium into the bones and away from arteries, helping to prevent both bone loss and vascular issues. These are supported by Vitamin D3 (essential for calcium absorption) and Boron (for hormone balance and bone matrix production). The result? A complete, targeted approach to bone health—without fillers or fluff. The Origin Story Behind the Formula The inspiration for RevOsteo didn't come from a lab—it came from the racetrack. Years ago, Dr. Simpson began treating young racehorses developing stress fractures during training. While their cardiovascular systems adapted quickly, their skeletal systems lagged behind, often resulting in serious injury. Through years of testing and formulation, he created a bone support formula that significantly reduced fractures in these high-performance animals. Eventually, that same formula evolved into RevOsteo for humans, fine-tuned for aging adults looking to protect their independence and mobility. The Bigger Picture of Aging Well Dr. Simpson is the first to say: RevOsteo is only one part of the solution. “To really protect your bones and live a long, healthy life, you also need strength training, proper nutrition, sleep, and sometimes hormone support,” he says. But supplementation fills in the gaps—especially as we age, hormone levels decline, and nutrient absorption weakens. That's why RevOsteo is ideal for: Women post-menopause Men over 50 with declining testosterone Anyone with osteopenia or family history of osteoporosis Active adults looking to preserve mobility and avoid fractures And while it won't deliver overnight results, Dr. Simpson says you can expect measurable gains—a 3–8% increase in bone density over 6 to 12 months—when combined with strength training and proper lifestyle support. What Else Is in the Alexsyn Line? While RevOsteo is the flagship product for bone health, Alexsyn offers a full suite of wellness tools, including: VeloSleep – A serotonin-boosting sleep gummy for deep, natural rest without synthetic melatonin overload. Amend GI – A plant-based gut health formula inspired by successful treatments for ulcers in high-performance horses. F-Ox VCS – Vision and cognitive support designed to protect the brain and eyes from oxidative stress as we age. Still, it's RevOsteo that's making the biggest impact—especially during National Osteoporosis Awareness Month and beyond. Ready to Strengthen Your Foundation? If you want to stay mobile, active, and independent well into your later years, don't wait for a fracture to get serious about your bones.

In this episode I cover an overview of the different types of chestnuts. And why do customers prefer hybrids over Chinese chestnuts? I share what named varieties that I am growing this year. And I give you tips to start your chestnut orchard, including soil pH and how/when to fertilize your chestnut trees.I forage buckets of chestnuts from local chestnut trees every Fall and store them in buckets of sand to sprout over the Winter. But in Spring 2024 my stored chestnuts were moldy and rotten - they had failed over the winter.I learned a lot more as I have diversified my chestnut offerings in response to this loss, as well as expanded my knowledge through my in real life contacts. In this article I will share what I have learned so it will help you as well.Varieties of chestnuts:American, Chinese, Japanese, European. Why are customers turned off by Chinese chestnuts? Why do they sell for less than hybrids?Dunstan chestnuts and other hybrids.Named varieties of chestnuts:A named variety, or a known-parent, is a tree or seedling that is chosen for it's heavy production and larger nut sizes. That known (named) parent mother tree is open pollinated by the surrounding trees. It's nuts are saved and grown into seedlings. This is a common way to grow and sell chestnuts, much more than grafting. Some sites call these named varieties of Chinese chestnuts Half sibs.Qing, Gideon, Amy, Peach, and Resilient are examples of named varieties (known parent/Half sibs) of Chinese Chestnuts.I am growing Qing, Resilient named varieties, and some Japanese hybrids this year.I am sprouting from seed:Eaton, which is a Chinese, American, and Japanese hybrid.Gideon seed. This will produce large to extra-large nuts that are high in quality and flavor.Hope is a Chinese, American hybrid that is a sibling of "King Arthur", a cultivar from the Connecticut Ag Experiment Station's chestnut breeding program.Revival: a HUGE hybrid with chestnuts as big as my palm.Tips to grow chestnuts:Chestnuts need moderately acidic soil, somewhere between 4.5 and 6.5 pH.Chestnuts need trace minerals like Boron, I have seen suggested that 1 tsp of borax, dissolved in water, poured on an 8x4 garden bed can help with this. I will experiment with adding boron this year.Do not put fertilizer in the hole when planting chestnut trees. You want the chestnut to grow out into the soil seeking nutrients. If you do fertilize, add some 10-10-10 fertilizer lightly to the top of the soil. Do not use long time released fertilizer.Foliar feed in the summer. This makes root growth and enhances the soil.Show notes for this episode: Ep. 154 - Tips to Start Your Chestnut OrchardGrow Nut Trees is now taking orders for Spring shipping or local pickup.Grow Nut Trees.comNEW for this year are more types of chestnuts, including Qing Chinese hybrid chestnut seedlings. The Qing tree is a heavy producer with sweet flavored extra large nuts. These seedlings were grown locally and are adapted to the Midwest.Grow Fodder Trees! New this year are cuttings for fodder trees - mulberry and hybrid willow. These are fast growing and the leaves are edible as forage for animals (my horses love them - maybe a little too much). Plus the mulberries can feed chickens if planted near a chicken run. And they are good for chop and drop. Get your mulberry and willow cuttings from Grow Nut Trees.

Fracture risk reduction should be the primary focus in treating osteoporosis. Hormone replacement therapy can effectively maintain and improve bone density in postmenopausal women. Proper nutrition, digestion, and inflammation management are crucial for bone health. MK4, a form of vitamin K2, has been shown to improve bone density and reduce fractures, while MK7 has not. While magnesium is important for overall health, there is limited evidence to support its role in reducing fractures. Exercise, including resistance training and functional exercises, can help improve bone health and reduce fracture risk.
Following the shocking assassination of an insurance industry CEO on the streets of New York City, voices on the Left have (unsurprisingly) celebrated — or at least justified — the killing, suggesting that it's tragic BUT somehow understandable. Sadly, those kinds of comments are not exclusive to the Left, and coming from some in the 2A community, it's a particularly bad look. Armed Lutheran Radio is a listener-supported podcast.

Corn plants need boron throughout the growing season. The uptake curve for the micronutrient is pretty linear from emergence to black layer, but making boron available in the ear later in the season, where it plays an important role in sugar movement and developing kernels, can be difficult. The challenge, says AGRIS Co-operative senior agronomist... Read More
Dr Luca Turin is a biophysicist, writer, and perfume connoisseur whose work on fragrances seems to suggest that we don't smell molecules, per se - we smell the complex vibrations of an atomic structure. Turin came to be convinced of this model for olfaction at the expense of the standard model of receptors binding smell molecules just on the basis of their shape due to a prediction he made about the smell of sulfur. If the pungent odor of rotten eggs and brimstone was due to the vibrational frequency of the sulfur atom attached to the molecule, then any other atom with a similar vibrational frequency, no matter its shape, should also smell of sulfur. He found a compatible molecule in an unexpected place, and the rest fell into place. We talk about his nascent passion for perfumes, why people are so reluctant to smell things, and the overlap between smell, resonance, and consciousness.

Mike and the Kevins are Kick' N It this episode, talking about what they are seeing in corn and soybean fields. Diseases have been pretty minor so far, but insects have been prevalent with lots of adult beetles to keep an eye on. As tassel approaches, it's time to start thinking about fungicide applications. Leaves may be clean now, but with the humid mornings, those plants may not be healthy as they progress. The group also talks about the hail damage to crops in Nebraska and water usage.ResourcesMaximizing the Value of Foliar Fungicides in Corn - https://www.pioneer.com/us/agronomy/maximizing_foliar_fungicides_corn.htmlGray Leaf Spot of Corn - https://www.pioneer.com/us/agronomy/gray_leaf_spot_cropfocus.htmlNovel Corn Rootworm Beetle Control Options - https://www.pioneer.com/us/agronomy/Novel-Corn-Rootworm-Beetle-Control-Options.htmlHail Damage to Corn and Soybeans - https://www.pioneer.com/us/agronomy/hail-damage-corn.htmlMicronutrients for Crop Production: https://www.pioneer.com/us/agronomy/micronutrients_crop_production.htmlWhite Mold Management in Soybeans: https://www.pioneer.com/us/agronomy/white_mold.html

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: What is a Tool?, published by johnswentworth on June 26, 2024 on LessWrong. Throughout this post, we're going to follow the Cognition -> Convergence -> Consequences methodology[1]. That means we'll tackle tool-ness in three main stages, each building on the previous: Cognition: What does it mean, cognitively, to view or model something as a tool? Convergence: Insofar as different minds (e.g. different humans) tend to convergently model the same things as tools, what are the "real patterns" in the environment which give rise to that convergence? Consequences: Having characterized the real patterns convergently recognized as tool-ness, what other properties or consequences of tool-ness can we derive? What further predictions does our characterization make? We're not going to do any math in this post, though we will gesture at the spots where proofs or quantitative checks would ideally slot in. Cognition: What does it mean, cognitively, to view or model something as a tool? Let's start with a mental model of (the cognition of) problem solving, then we'll see how "tools" naturally fit into that mental model. When problem-solving, humans often come up with partial plans - i.e. plans which have "gaps" in them, which the human hasn't thought through how to solve, but expects to be tractable. For instance, if I'm planning a roadtrip from San Francisco to Las Vegas, a partial plan might look like "I'll take I-5 down the central valley, split off around Bakersfield through the Mojave, then get on the highway between LA and Vegas". That plan has a bunch of gaps in it: I'm not sure exactly what route I'll take out of San Francisco onto I-5 (including whether to go across or around the Bay), I don't know which specific exits to take in Bakersfield, I don't know where I'll stop for gas, I haven't decided whether I'll stop at the town museum in Boron, I might try to get pictures of the airplane storage or the solar thermal power plant, etc. But I expect those to be tractable problems which I can solve later, so it's totally fine for my plan to have such gaps in it. How do tools fit into that sort of problem-solving cognition? Well, sometimes similar gaps show up in many different plans (or many times in one plan). And if those gaps are similar enough, then it might be possible to solve them all "in the same way". Sometimes we can even build a physical object which makes it easy to solve a whole cluster of similar gaps. Consider a screwdriver, for instance. There's a whole broad class of problems for which my partial plans involve unscrewing screws. Those partial plans involve a bunch of similar "unscrew the screw" gaps, for which I usually don't think in advance about how I'll unscrew the screw, because I expect it to be tractable to solve that subproblem when the time comes. A screwdriver is a tool for that class of gaps/subproblems[2]. So here's our rough cognitive characterization: Humans naturally solve problems using partial plans which contain "gaps", i.e. subproblems which we put off solving until later Sometimes there are clusters of similar gaps A tool makes some such cluster relatively easy to solve. Convergence: Insofar as different minds (e.g. different humans) tend to convergently model the same things as tools, what are the "real patterns" in the environment which give rise to that convergence? First things first: there are limits to how much different minds do, in fact, convergently model the same things as tools. You know that thing where there's some weird object or class of objects, and you're not sure what it is or what it's for, but then one day you see somebody using it for its intended purpose and you're like "oh, that's what it's for"? () From this, we learn several things about tools: Insofar as different humans convergently model the same things as tools at...

Boron, Can You Have Too Much Of A Good Thing?
Today, we're going to talk about the number 1 missing trace mineral involved in arthritis. Vitamin D and magnesium are often used for arthritis, but they won't work without enough boron. There aren't many studies on boron, but there is some promising data involving boron and arthritis. Boron seems to be the key trace mineral that allows calcium and magnesium to work. If you're deficient in boron, you'll have excess calcium and magnesium in the urine and tend to get more calcification in the soft tissues. You might also have weaker bones. Here are some of the health benefits of boron: • Helps keep minerals inside the bone • Allows vitamin D to be activated • Helps prevent tooth decay Boron helps prevent joint inflammation by reducing C-reactive protein. A boron deficiency can also cause receding gums, kidney stones, calcium in the arteries, and calcium in the joints. The parathyroid gland stores the most boron in the body and produces a hormone that helps control calcium. If you don't have enough calcium, the parathyroid hormone will increase to extract the calcium from your bones. You need boron to allow this process to work. If you're low in boron, you might also be low in testosterone or estrogen. Research suggests that boron can even potentially help reduce the risk of prostate cancer. To use boron to help relieve arthritis symptoms, try starting with 3 mg of boron three times per day and see if the problem resolves within 1 to 3 months.
Ok, well…. Today's episode is a bit unique…. The intention was to discuss the important benefits of a trace mineral called boron. It is an important mineral, make no mistake. But, as we started recording, we got bored. Turns out talking about boron is kind of boring! So, we do hit the boron highlights, but then, in typical Patti & Michael fashion, we veer off into debate and discussion. The topic became the danger of misinformation by health influencers and how to remain skeptical.
