Half of Saskatchewan is watching the canola fill pods. The other half is still sitting in water. 30% of the cropland in the province rated moisture surplus at the time of this conversation, and the ministry's own word is that flooding is the number one source of crop damage in Saskatchewan this year. Yellowing fields, drowned-out low spots, pulses going backwards. The decision framework for in-season nutrition changes when you're not sure which half of the province you're in. Greg Patterson has been doing tissue analysis at A&L Canada Laboratories for decades. Darren Fischer is a technical advisor with Crop-Aid Nutrition who was in the fields in real time during this conversation. This is what they said on July 13, 2026, with the season in exactly the condition it was in. What's Inside - Two seasons on the prairies at once: what each one means for your in-crop nutrition decisions right now - A farm-walk report from Darren Sander at Sander Farms near Sovereign, Saskatchewan -- his fungicide and foliar strategy mid-season - Why you should never apply a fungicide without pairing a foliar with it, and why that's even more true in a wet year - Potassium as the yield driver in both wet and dry conditions: for every pound of nitrogen the crop needs early, it needs three of potassium - How to read a tissue report: the fuel-gauge analogy, what dropping levels actually mean, and why a great crop should drive you crazy - The phloem connection: how potassium and boron work together to move photosynthates through the plant, and what happens when boron is low - The nitrate accumulation trap: when it looks like a nitrogen problem but it's actually a potassium and boron imbalance - Boron in Western Canada: why we're afraid of it, why that's costing yield, and what the research on microbial activity actually says - Foliar selection by condition and crop stage: which product when, and how to think about tank mixing with herbicides and fungicides - Handheld tissue testers vs. lab analysis: what the correlation data actually shows - The fastest way to get a tissue sample to the lab: paper bag, Purolator envelope, 24-hour turnaround - The economics: how to think about a $5-6 foliar pass when you're already sending the sprayer out for fungicide - Frost risk in a late year: why well-fertilized crops mature faster and reduce your window of exposure If you want more from Greg Patterson on soil biology and tissue analysis, the Engine of the Soil series is where he goes deep -- look for those episodes in the GTF Podcast back catalog. And if shallow rooting and soil health in a wet year is where your season is, that same series has the framework. La ContraHistoria
El Santo Grial

La ContraHistoria

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 9, 2026 81:20

In this episode, we chat with Paul Weibel, Chief Executive Officer of 5E Advanced Materials. Since Paul's last appearance on Dig Deep, both the company and the broader critical minerals landscape have evolved significantly. As governments and industry increasingly focus on supply chain security, energy transition materials, and domestic resource development, boron has emerged as a strategic mineral receiving far greater attention than ever before. In this conversation, we discuss the progress being made at the Fort Cady Project in California, the significance of boron's addition to the U.S. Critical Minerals List, and what that designation means in practical terms for financing, customer engagement, and government support. We'll also explore why boron is becoming increasingly important across a range of advanced technologies, where demand growth is coming from, and how shifting geopolitical dynamics, trade tensions, and supply chain fragmentation are strengthening the case for domestic sources of critical minerals. In addition, we'll look at the financing environment for critical minerals projects, how 5E is navigating the intersection of private capital, strategic investors, and government-backed funding opportunities, and the key milestones stakeholders should be watching over the next 12 to 18 months. Finally, Paul shares his perspective on what policymakers and investors still may not fully appreciate about boron, its strategic importance, and what is at stake as countries work to secure critical mineral supply chains for the future. This episode is brought to you by Mining International, a global executive search partner to the mining industry. For bespoke search and advisory services, please visit www.mining-international.org KEY TAKEAWAYS Boron's recent designation as a US critical mineral highlights its vital importance to national defense, green energy, and industrial supply chains. Global boron supply is exceptionally tight and dominated by a fragile duopoly, making the establishment of independent domestic sources a pressing geopolitical priority. Beyond its primary boron focus, 5E Advanced Materials' Fort Cady project possesses a highly lucrative lithium byproduct stream that unlocks versatile non-dilutive financing opportunities. BEST MOMENTS "Boron really is important... It had always sat as a strategic material per the Defense Logistics Agency. This was validation that boron really is now more mainstream." "The boron supply deficit is here. We're seeing an uptick in prices... All markets that use a boric acid are domestically very, very tight." "Now, in addition to boron being critical, we'll also produce a lithium byproduct stream... You have a more diversified critical minerals portfolio." In this Podcast Extra episode, John Kempf delivers his keynote address from "The Quality Edge: Market Differentiation Through Regenerative Wine Growing," an event hosted by Grgich Hills Estate in Rutherford, California. Speaking to an audience of professional wine growers, John explores how regenerative agriculture is becoming the ultimate differentiator in a crowded global market. He details how focusing on soil biology and plant physiology not only restores ecosystems but drives the production of wines with distinct character and superior quality that today's consumers demand. Key Topics Discussed: Why wine grapes are one of the few crops where microbiome integrity translates directly to harvest quality and financial return. The "Rhizophagy Cycle" and how plant roots absorb entire microbial cells to extract nutrients. Recent discoveries that microbes act as "truckers", transporting lipids and nutrients into plants before returning to the soil. The concept of "quorum sensing" and how microbial communities behave as a superorganism once they reach a critical threshold of diversity. How trees and plants demonstrate intelligence and support one another through fungal networks, including the "Mother Tree" concept. The three major suppressors of soil biology: bare soil, high-salt fertilizers, and synthetic fungicides. Why synthetic fungicides are often more damaging to soil structure and biology than tillage or herbicides. Introduction to Pinion, a new biocontrol product from AEA that influences plant redox environments and activates immune pathways. The critical role of Manganese and Boron as bottlenecks for photosynthesis and sugar translocation. Jay Watte is a fourth-generation farmer from the Imperial Valley in Southern California, where he manages a family operation focused on seed production. Thanks to his pioneering practices, Jay hasn't sprayed insecticides on his farm for nearly two years. Instead of pesticides, Jay uses nutrient management, particularly boron applications, to boost plant resilience and reduce pest pressure. His experiments with soil inoculations and cover crops, are yielding promising results, including healthier plants and higher seed quality. Jay's approach emphasizes sustainable practices that prioritize long-term soil vitality and community well-being over short-term gains. Jay supplies major retailers and local farmers with his seed, especially Bermuda grass and alfalfa. Beyond seed production, he has ventured into growing agave and is launching a market garden to provide diverse, healthy produce to his community through a local CSA program. In this episode, John and Jay discuss: The challenges of producing seed compared to forage crops Improving alfalfa seed quality  Changing regional crop patterns, including the decline of cotton and sugar beets Water management and irrigation challenges in a desert environment Evolving management strategies to combat the rise in pest and disease pressures Jay's success in reducing insecticide use through boron and nutrient management The benefits of soil inoculations and cover crops in regenerative farming Jay's vision for a sustainable legacy for his children and community Additional Resources To learn more about AEA's Rebound Boron, please visit: https://advancingecoag.com/product/rebound-boron-gal-p6850075/ About John Kempf John Kempf is the founder of Advancing Eco Agriculture (AEA).
