Paul McCartney certainly knows how to stay busy! 2 weeks ago Paul "Rocked The Bowery Ballroom" and closed out the 50th Anniversary of SNL!  Today, 26th February 2025 he announced the forthcoming release of his OWN book titled: "Wings: The Story of a Band On The Run."   The press release: As the Sixties came to a close, Paul was faced with the daunting prospect of being a solo artist for the first time. Wings' ascension to the top of the charts with classic albums including Band on the Run, Venus and Mars and At the Speed of Sound, along with the band's stadium-filling live shows would prove to critics and fans that not all great acts are impossible to follow. Wings:The Story of a Band on the Run is a rousing, stereophonic celebration of the songs, collaborations and performances that would shape the soundtrack of the late 20th century. Drawn from over 500,000 words, based on dozens of hours of interviews with Paul and numerous key players in the band's orbit, Wings: The Story of a Band on the Run weaves together the improbable trajectory of Paul McCartney and his newly formed band (featuring co-founding members Linda McCartney and Denny Laine) across the technicolor 1970s until their dissolution in 1981.  Edited by the prize-winning historian Ted Widmer and organized around nine Wings albums, the oral history sheds new light on the immediate aftermath of the seismic global impact of The Beatles' break-up, as the musical landscape and tastes began to splinter and diverge along with societal views. The narrative follows the various incarnations of the band as they survive a mugging in Nigeria, appear unannounced at UK university halls, tour in a sheared-off school bus with their children, while producing some of the most indelible and acclaimed music of the decade, including: “Mull of Kintyre,” “Live and Let Die,” “Band on the Run,” “My Love,” “Jet,” “With a Little Luck,” “Silly Love Songs,” “Let ‘Em In,” “Junior's Farm” and more.  With more than 100 black-and-white and color photographs, many never seen before, Wings: The Story of a Band on the Run is part of a larger reexamination and appreciation of the group and their catalog, including the 2024 theatrical release of the rare Wings live-in-studio performance film One Hand Clapping and its accompanying album; 50th anniversary editions of the Wings albums Band on the Run (released February 2024) and Venus and Mars (releasing March 2025); and a forthcoming documentary on Paul McCartney's solo and Wings-related musical work of the 1970s from Academy Award-winning filmmaker, Morgan Neville. 2025 is shaping up to be a FANTASTIC year for all of us Macca-diehards!

"Backyard" film.      Paul, Linda, Denny, Geoff and Jimmy.     Also in the studio were two other musicians, an orchestra and a dog. One of the musicians was called Howie Casey and played a saxophone. The other was called Del Newman and he conducted the orchestra. The dog was called Poppy and didn't really do much at all. The studio at number 3 Abbey Road, London is where The Beatles recorded their first album Please Please Me in 1963 and the studio hasn't been painted since then. Geoff Emerick, the recording engineer, said it would ruin the acoustics.

As Marla Gibbs (look her up, Boomer. Did I get that right?) once said, “there's no place like home!” And she was obviously singing about Skokie, Illinois - home of a cookie cutter AMC Movie Palace so glorious, it rivals only Chicago's famous Esquire Theater, now home to a shuttered Dallas-based steak chain. (#Progress) Usually, Tony and T.J. only go on post-Bears game movie dates when it involves seeing the latest Marvel sequel to a Marvel sequel. (Turn up the volume on those explosions, projector man!) But a special field trip was made after a SEASON-TURNING BEARS WIN, to go see the limited, first ever theatrical release of Paul McCartney's “One Hand Clapping”. Is the film better on the big screen than tucked away on the “Band On The Run” Archive Collection DVD? Does the music rock even harder in the theater? What's the deal with popcorn prices these days, Obama? Tony and T.J. ask these salient and Soily questions, and also ponder from the backyard (of the theater):

Your humble co-hosts are "live in the studio" to review, analyze and critique the two new Paul McCartney & Wings releases from this past year: One Hand Clapping and Band on the Run - Underdubbed. First up is the long-awaited standalone release of Wings Mach 1.5's most expansive effort before the departure of drummer Geoff Britton, an idea hatched by Paul & Linda to capture both audio and video of the band prepping for a new tour. While widely bootlegged and only ever officially released in sporadic chunks over the years, One Hand Clapping at last gets its due as a snapshot of this tuneful, rocking, high-energy era of the Wings project. Next, a revelatory gaze into the rough mixes of Paul, Linda and Denny's seminal Band on the Run LP, christened "Under-Dubbed" and freshly issued to mark 50 years since the album's initial release. The 4th of July is a wonderful time to remember that life's all about picking sides - and, often, hands; across the water, and across America! And today we pick sides…deep dishing sides three and four of One Hand Clapping! Plus, we dive into the incredible bonus, backyard vinyl EP that under no circumstance should be included anywhere digitally, because the millions of peons who dare to get their music from places other than the Universal Music online store don't deserve live “Blackbird”. (Nope, not letting this one go.) Tony and T.J. agree that the first official release of “One Hand Clapping” is a masterpiece, perhaps one of Paul's very best albums; unless one is Rob Sheffleld, in which case this would rank just below “Gone Troppo”. But when it's time to pick sides, perhaps they're more Siskel & Ebert and less Medved & Lyons as they also ponder:

Marv and I review the second disc of the "One Hand Clapping' set, and the contents of the vinyl EP.    It is becoming popular for many internet types to claim that this collection is now amongst their favorite Wings albums.     That might be a bit of hyperbole, and it might be recency bias, but even so, this new mix and official release of the 1974 Paul McCartney and Wings bootleg favorite is at a minimum, quality product from Sir Macca and MPL.

What exactly is the sound of one hand clapping? Is it similar to one man napping? Some band slapping? Dumb planned crapping? Crumb...tanned...uh, line? LINE? No, you can't get in line at your local record shoppe for a midnight release party, because the first ever official, complete vinyl issue of "One Hand Clapping" is being sold exactly as it would've been in 1974: exclusively on Universal's website. Eat it, beloved, local record stores! And unlike Wacco Jacko's '88 parody "Eat It", these live-in-studio Wings tracks have never sounded fresher. 50 years after they were recorded, can a case be made that this is a top-tier McCartney album, filled with definitive versions of Macca classics? We'll leave that to Rob Sheffield, who'll rank "Love My Baby" ahead of "Watching The Wheels", and instead ask:

He's got an unparalleled ability to craft characters and a situations that are so vivid, you can't easily tell when he's hiding his own feelings and life stories in them. So when we writes a song where he's totally upfront about a situation, no story, no characters, you can bet it's something important to him. And that's what he's doing with "You Never Give Me Your Money" from Abbey Road. Maybe the first time we get. real glimpse of the Paul who can take various fragments and create a composition with different movements, the song discusses his frustration with the Beatles' inner-organization fighting over their financial situation. One might think a song with such a specific perspective would make it hard to connect to, but Paul's vocal is so on point and so emotive and authentic, it's easy to connect to. It's also, imho, the auditory blueprint for Abbey Road, crystal clear guitars, signature drum fills, sparkling sonics, it's a true gem of the catalogue. Joining us this week is someone who knows McCartney pretty darn well, Tom Hunyady, co-host of 2Legs, A Solo Paul McCartney Podcast, as well Talk More Talk, A Solo Beatles Videocast. Tom's been deep-diving into Paul's catalogue for a long, long time, and we're big fans of his shows, so when we had a chance to connect at the Fest for Beatles Fans, we couldn't have been happier. Tom joins us (with a BIG discrepancy in our ranking) to discuss the Beatles podcast landscape, One Hand Clapping, recognizing Paul's genius, and more. Adrian is the co-author of the celebrated The McCartney Legacy Volume 1 1969-73, along with Allan Kozinn. Adrian joins Andy and Tom as he gives an overview of this period in Wings history. Starting with the seeds of the era in during the infamous trip to Nashville in the Summer of 1974, then Geoff Britton and Jimmy McCulloch joining before heading back to London and Abbey Road where One Hand Clapping was planned to be filmed and released. The film was directed by David Litchfield but has remained on the shelf but snippets have been officially released most recently on the Archive Edition of Band On The Run (Nov. 2010). Adrian tells us about meeting David Litchfield and we are also happy to include a short soundbite of an interview he conducted with Litchfield during 2018. All this on the heels of One Hand Clapping the soundtrack album which is due out next week on the 14th June. We hope this episode gears you up even more for the release. It's been a hectic April! New Ringo EP, One Hand Clapping announced this past week, RSD and now finally a "new" Beatles related text has been published. All You Need Is Love: The Beatles In Their Own Words is a new book of interview transcripts conducted by long time Beatles associate Peter Brown and his co-author Steven Gaines. These interviews were conducted between 1979 and 1981 with all then surviving members of the Beatles and their entourage which formed the basis for their 1983 controversial "tell all" book The Love You Make: An Insider's Story on The Beatles. One of the more significant interviews is the one that Paul gave for the book. Which we think took place sometime in 1980 (There are no dates given for the interviews but it was certainly before December 1980 as he refers to John in the present. Much of the interview questions centered around the breakup and his relationships with Brian, John, Yoko and Linda. Have you picked it up yet? Thoughts? Let us know! Peace Andy & Tom

Feast your ears on this little gem from our archives - a partial recording of the Big Sur Folk Festival of 1969, which was also captured in a documentary film called "Celebration at Big Sur," directed by Baird Bryant and Johanna Demetrakas, from which this recording was culled. The Big Sur Folk Festival occurred September 13th and 14th of '69, about a month after Woodstock, and it featured some of the same performers, including Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young and John Sebastian, who had left the Lovin' Spoonful the year earlier. The lineup, while not quite at the Woodstock level was still quite impressive, including Joan Baez, Joni Mitchell, Mimi Fariña , the Flying Burrito Brothers, and Dorothy Combs Morrison, a gospel singer whose song “All God's Children Got Soul,” reached number 95 on the Billboard top 100 in October of 1969. Joan Baez, of course, has a long history with the Big Sur area and with Esalen - before Esalen was even Esalen, when it was still Big Sur Hot Springs or Slate's Hot Springs, she lived in Carmel and often came to the Hot Springs, where she could be heard playing her guitar and singing; she also had a friendship with the former Esalen gate guard Hunter S. Thompson. Baez taught her first workshop at Esalen in 1964, entitled “The New Folk Music,” which became the basis for the first Big Sur Folk Festival. The festival would reoccur each year thereafter until 1971. a couple of albums came out of the various festivals, including Celebration, From the 1970 festival, One Hand Clapping, from the 1971 festival. and Live at the Big Sur Folk Festival, featuring Kris Kristofferson's performance from 1971. This episode will comprise part one of the 1969 festival, and in our next episode we'll get part two. The setlist for this episode goes like this: Joan Baez singing “I Shall Be Released” , then “Mobile Line” by John Sebastian with Stephen Stills, followed by “Song for David” by Baez, and then “All God's Children Got Soul” by Dorothy Combs Morrison and the Combs sisters. Then we have a nice "Sea of Madness" by Crosby Stills Nash and Young, followed by an interesting scene where a heckler interrupts the performance taking place down at the Esalen pool and ultimately gets into a fistfight with Stephen Stills. This scene is pretty wild and you might want to refer to the actual movie for this one; it's available to watch on YouTube. Really a fun watch, especially if you've been to Esalen before and you want to see the property and how it looked in the late 60's overrun by 10,000 friendly young people. Then we get Stills doing "4 and 20," followed by a very young Joni Mitchell accompanying Crosby Stills and Nash with John Sebastian on "Get Together." At this time Joni was dating Graham Nash. You'll also hear her talking about spotting some whales off the coast. Then we'll end with Dorothy Combs Morrison kinda stealing the show with her cover of Put a Little Love in your Heart. I really hope you enjoy this dip into Esalen history and a glimpse back to the days when a rock festival cost four dollars to attend. Yes indeed. It's true.
