We continue our deep dive into one of Australian basketball's greatest rivalries... Sydney versus Illawarra. This episode we continue on through the late 1990s and into the Hawks' historic 2001 championship run. Featuring first-hand accounts from Bob Turner, Shane Heal, Gordie McLeod, Greg Hubbard, Bill Tomlinson, Stephen Jackson, and Glen Saville, this episode covers a turbulent era for both clubs — the Kings' struggles to live up to their star power, and the Hawks' transformation from underdog to champion under Brendan Joyce. Topics include: Alan Black's move from Illawarra to Sydney and the fallout that followed (06:00) Shane Heal on leaving Brisbane, joining Sydney, and facing the "Violet Crumbles" stigma (08:00) Gordie McLeod on discovering Glen Saville and his early Hawks journey (11:30) Marcus Timmons' 30-point debut and Illawarra's rebuild under Brendan Joyce (16:00) Stephen Jackson's short but memorable stint with the Kings (20:00) Wollongong's rise, the 2001 playoff run, and Damon Lowery's legendary free throws (38:00) The Hawks claim NSW's first NBL title — Saville named Finals MVP (40:00) Visit dunk.com.au for your next set of basketball uniforms. What does it mean to shape culture through design? For Peter Saville CBE, one of the most influential designers of our time, it has always been about perception. From his early work at Factory Records, crafting the visual identities of Joy Division and New Order, to collaborations with fashion houses like Yohji Yamamoto, Burberry, Calvin Klein and Chanel, Saville has consistently redefined how we experience music, fashion, and culture. Now in his late sixties, he reflects on a career that blurred the lines between art, design and branding, sometimes to his dismay, as he laments the loss of authenticity in today’s brand-saturated world. Listen as Vince and Peter explore his iconic album covers, his transition from music to fashion and cultural institutions, and why, in his words, he has “always been designing himself.” See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Recruiting Future is taking a couple of weeks off and will return the first week in September. In the meantime, I've got some summer specials for you. As I don't need to tell you, AI is a massive topic at the moment and isn't going to change any time soon; it's only going to get bigger and more critical. With that in mind, I wanted to share my thoughts on where we are with AI at the moment, its future direction, and also share the outline of a framework I've developed for strategic AI implementation in TA. Earlier in the summer, I was a guest on the Saville Assessment Deep Dive podcast, talking about AI. The host, Hannah Mullaney, asked such great questions that I thought I would drop the whole episode into the Recruiting Future podcast feed for you to take a listen to. So, with thanks to Hannah and the team at Saville, here is a deep dive into my take on AI and the future of talent acquisition.

For this special episode I'm joined by Ciaran Shiels, human rights lawyer for the Madden & Finucane law firm. For almost 30 years, Ciaran he has represented the majority of the Families and Wounded throughout the Saville Inquiry, the subsequent civil actions, and in all of the Judicial Review challenges related to the criminal investigations and prosecutions of those responsible for the shootings of 27 unarmed young men and a woman on Bloody Sunday, as well as approximately 500 of the civilian witnesses who gave evidence at Saville. He has been immersed in the case against Soldier F, with all of its twists and turns, and is recognised as one of leading legal authorities on the events of Bloody Sunday. This episode will be an extremely in-depth analysis of Bloody Sunday's events with a particular focus on the notorious “Soldier F” due to his upcoming trial in September, and that of his fellow British Paratroopers, none of whom are facing trial. Ciaran takes us through each of Soldier F's victims, as well as all those m*rdered in a day that would have long-lasting effects on Irish history.Ciaran talks about how Soldier F's account of his actions that day have changed over the years, how Soldier F lied about the innocent people he arrested on the day and the various attempts by the British establishment to avoid a putting Soldier F in court to face justice. This episode is 3 hours long and is obviously a very deep-dive into the entire case, myself and Ciaran wanted to create one video, available to everyone online, that goes through the existing evidence and testimony regarding Bloody Sunday with a degree of thoroughness previously unseen in a podcast/YouTube video. This episode is for those who wish to get into the weeds of the case and get a clear idea of what Solider F and his men did that day and why they, mostly, got away with it.This episode contains graphic description of violence and may be upsetting to some. 00:00 Why we can discuss the case and Soldier F's Anonymity Order 05:53 Ciaran Shiel's background 16:00 Soldier F & his unit 50:15 SOLDIER F ON BLOODY SUNDAY (SH*OTING STARTS)1:24:10 How many did Soldier F sh*ot and how his account of the day has changed? 2:07:47 Belfast incident involving anti-tank platoon 2:17:00 Was Soldier F ordered to sh*ot innocent people ?2:50:40 Predictions for trial 2:58:00 Tape of bugged calls from Victoria Barracks (Derry) on the day PLEASE HELP OUT THE SHOW IF YOU CAN SPARE IT.. Painter Jenny Saville, renowned for her large-scale portraits of fleshy, naked women, made her name soon after leaving art school when her graduation exhibition work was bought by collector Charles Saatchi. In 1997, her work was also part of the landmark Royal Academy show Sensation, alongside now iconic pieces by Damien Hirst, Tracey Emin and others. Since then, the main focus of her work - which has been shown in museums and galleries all around the world - has remained the female form. In 2018, a Jenny Saville painting called Propped sold at auction for £9.5m, at the time a world record for a work by a living female artist. A retrospective exhibition of over 50 of her paintings and drawings is being held at the National Portrait Gallery in London. Jenny Saville tells John Wilson how her childhood interest in painting was nurtured by her uncle, an art teacher, who took her to museums to understand the work of great artists. She says she was hugely inspired by seeing a Lucien Freud exhibition at the Hayward Gallery in London in 1987, and that his large-scale nude portraits influenced her early style. Jenny recalls how a year spent at the University of Cincinnati, as part of her Glasgow School of Art degree course, also had an impact on her understanding of art history from a feminist perspective and refocused the theme of her painting. She describes how she made the monumental paintings of female nude figures, some with liposuction surgery markings on the bodies, which were shown at the Saatchi Gallery and at the Royal Academy Sensation exhibition. Jenny Saville also reflects on the later influence on her work of the Dutch-American abstract painter Willem de Kooning, and of her children with whom she paints at home. Producer: Edwina Pitman

This week, Richard Saville-Smith joins Kelly and John to talk about his book Acute Religious Experiences – Madness, Psychosis, and Religious Studies, which was published by Bloomsbury in 2023. Saville-Smith is an independent researcher who focuses on the intersection of madness, mental disorders, and acute religious experiences, from a mad studies perspective. He earned his PhD in Philosophy and Religious Studies from the University of Edinburgh in 2020. They discuss the relatively little-known academic field of mad studies - which seeks to destigmatize and depathologize the concept of madness - and how the fields of psychiatry and religious studies, often operating in conflict with one another, have distorted our understanding of the authenticity of acute religious experiences like the ones described in the lives of Joan of Arc or Jesus. My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Shelby Saville, author of the book And They Had a Great Fall. Shelby resides in a suburb west of Chicago. Despite her city living, she's a small-town girl at heart. She grew up in a town of 2000 people where she spent her teenage years at her typewriter late into the night. Her stories brought her to a world beyond the 1.6 square mile radius of her town. Her first writing job was for the Lacon Home Journal, where she covered the news of the town. She particularly loved writing obituaries, taking great care to convey the life of someone's friend … sibling … lover…. But still the city was calling. She moved to Chicago when she got her dream job in the advertising industry. Throughout her career she realized she had an interest in digital media. She's spent the last 25 years at Publicis Media where she's focused on media investment – quite simply – how advertising space is bought and sold. Most surprisingly, she found her career in numbers, not words. She's returned to the world of words with her debut novel, And They Had A Great Fall. It's a second chance love story, set in a foreign city with a dash of a celebrity secret romance. Writing this novel has felt like coming home as the two sides of her brain merge. When not at her computer, she can be found hanging with her husband, Scott, teenage daughter, three dogs and one mean cat. In my book review, I stated And They Had a Great Fall is a wonderful romance that had me in all of my emotions. For me, it was particularly poignant since we learn early on that Kat lost her husband to cancer five years earlier - and she is having a heck of a time moving forward. Although she is much younger than me, has a young child at home, and was in the midst of an important corporate career, I still felt a kinship. Kat's love interest, Jake, is someone well outside her norm. Everything about his life is what she claims to abhor - messy, emotional, spontaneous, and all-in. Jake sees that she offers a stability and sense of purpose he craves. But what happens when two broken people find one another and try to fix the other without first fixing themselves? I laughed. I cried. I raged. I cheered. But most importantly, I connected. This book should be on your TBR. I am so excited to say that my guest on the GWA Podcast is one of the most renowned painters working in the world right now: Jenny Saville. Hailed for her at times colossal paintings of the human form – from close ups of the face, to examinations of exposed flesh – Saville is fascinated with the complex vessels that we all live inside. Theatrical and grotesque, beautiful and painful, her presentations of the body can feel almost like a landscape, pressed up against the surface of the canvas, in her masterful handling of paint that ranges from wet, to dry, oily to thin, thick and with shards and smears of colour. At once uneasy, raw, tense, and animal-like, Saville's portrayals of the body show how it transforms, grows, decays, and breathes… While full of contradictions, there is always a beauty, from the colours Saville uses to the golden light and textures that accentuate a knee, or finger. Born in Cambridge in 1970, as one of four siblings, Saville studied at the Glasgow School of Art in the 80s and 90s, and spent her final year in Cincinnati, Ohio, where she was exposed to a new set of American artists and feminist thought. In the 1990s, Saville quickly became one of the most anticipated painters challenging not just the medium of paint, or the depiction of the body, but reinventing the female nude or semi-nude body as a subject that has been entrenched in a male-gazed art history. Tackling Biblical and mythological narratives, referencing ancient Venus-like figures, as well as her own experience as a mother, Saville has constantly configured new ways of presenting the body, and in more recent years, has turned to stark, saturated colouring This year, she will open exhibitions at the Albertina, Vienna, her first major solo show in Austria; Anatomy of Painting at the National Portrait Gallery, London – that will bring together 50 works – and will travel to the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, Texas, for us to see the incredible trajectory of an artist who keeps reinventing flesh with paint – and I can't wait to find out more… LINKS!
