There is a lack of teacher education materials that develop equity literacy in content courses for preservice secondary mathematics teachers. In response, we created teacher education curriculum materials for introductory statistics that include an integrated focus on developing equity literacy and critical statistical literacy. In this article, we provide an overview of our materials' design along with a detailed look at one activity regarding racial demographics and tracking in high school STEM courses. We present evidence regarding the positive impact of these materials on the teacher candidates' competency, value, and likelihood of applying their equity literacy and critical statistical literacy. Implications for mathematics teacher educators working to develop equity literacy together with content knowledge are discussed. https://modules2dotcom.wordpress.com Special Guests: Andrew Ross and Stephanie Casey.

Dr. Shenghua Zha, an assistant professor of instructional design and development at the University of South Alabama, discusses her National Science Foundation grant "Preparing Elementary Pre-service Teachers to Integrate Computing across the Curriculum." This project is a collaboration between Zha and colleagues from the College of Engineering and College of Education and Professional Studies. The assumptions driving this grant are that computing is an interdisciplinary skill that is often not taught in an interdisciplinary manner, and one that is now significantly supported by state curriculum mandates. These project leaders are working together to deliver and evaluate training for early career teachers to integrate principles of computing into the teaching of English language arts, social studies, mathematics and science. This is accomplished through the use of developmentally appropriate interfaces that expose young learners to principles of computing from basic concepts to coding practices. The larger goal of the grant is to encourage teachers to continue integrating computing into their instruction across the elementary curriculum as they move into their careers.

Preservice elementary teachers (PSTs) often enter their teacher preparation programs with procedural and underdeveloped understandings of area measurement and its applications. This is problematic given that area and the area model are used throughout K–Grade 12 to develop flexibility in students' mathematical understanding and to provide them with a visual interpretation of numerical ideas. This study describes an intervention aimed at bolstering PSTs' understanding of area and area units with respect to measurement and number and operations. Following the intervention, results indicate that PSTs had both an improved ability to solve area tiling tasks as well as increased flexibility in the strategies they implemented. The results indicate that PSTs, similar to elementary students, develop a conceptual understanding of area from the use of tangible tools and are able to leverage visualizations to make sense of multiplicative structure across different strategies. This episode is inspired by my new book (coming September 2022), "50 tips for New Teachers". I co-authored the book with Matthew Rhoads, Ed.D, Casey Jakubowski, Ph.D., and Kevin Leichtman, Ph.D. We share 50 tips for supporting new teachers throughout the year. We discuss just a single tip here. Are you interested in learning more about the book? Join the waitlist - https://view.flodesk.com/pages/62aa87a43e1f4ce38387efdd According to We are Teachers (2021), "Restorative justice is a theory of justice that focuses on mediation and agreement rather than punishment. Offenders must accept responsibility for harm and make restitution to victims." Restorative practice is rooted in Indigenous practices. Restorative practices build school community and respectfully address challenges caused by challenging behavior. Instead of punishing students, these practices promote restoring relationships among students and a student taking ownership of their behaviors. There are three tiers of restorative justice. We cover five common student teaching questions. From how to work with a co-op and classroom expectations, as well as time management and edtech we cover it all. Specifically, we cover the following questions about student teaching.1. My biggest question is honestly how to manage the work and social life aspect of teaching. I've managed it somewhat over the year of pre-student teaching and student teaching in kindergarten but I'm still struggling. Mine is how to set boundaries for yourself between school and home!! I don't have to worry so much about it right now, but I know myself, and I know I'll struggle with it when I have my own classroom!!2. Finding the balance of managing classroom behavior but not having too many rules or appearing mean.3. How can we do a good job of trying new things and making our practicums our own without ruining established classroom rules/procedures? I'm so nervous to try new things in case it causes issues for my mentor teacher. 4. What are some ways you can cope or things you can do when you and your co-op have completely different teaching philosophies?5. What are some ways you can transform worksheets or present worksheets in an engaging manner without differing from worksheets?
