Found another great reminder for me to share with you - this one coming from Emily Paschall (@EmilyAPaschall) and she brings us a great quote from Todd Whitaker.  The quote is “I don't know if being positive solves problems, but I do know being negative doesn't.”  The problem is there - no matter what we think. To get through it or to solve it, it does make a difference not to have a negative attitude for sure. Another reason to be as positive as we can, since there seems to always be problems, we might as well give ourselves a good shot at getting through them.  Thanks for listening.  Please take a few moments to subscribe & share this with someone, also leave a 5 Star rating on Apple Podcasts and ITunes or other services where you find this show.  Find me on Facebook:  https://www.facebook.com/coachtoexpectsuccess/   on Twitter / “X”:  @coachtosuccess   and on Instagram at:  @coachjohndaly  - My YouTube Channel is at: Coach John Daly.   Email me at: CoachJohnDalyPodcast@gmail.com     You can also head on over to https://www.coachtoexpectsuccess.com/ and get in touch with me there on my homepage along with checking out my Top Book list too.  Other things there on my site are being worked on too.  Please let me know that you are reaching out to me from my podcast.

He is one of the most influential thought leaders in educational leadership and has written 65 books on staff motivation, teacher leadership, and principal effectiveness! Today Whitaker talks about the latest edition of his classic book, What Great Principals Do Differently: Twenty Things That Matter Most. Todd shares 8 of the 20 things he has found (through research AND personal experience as a principal) the BEST principals do that the average ones don't. He was quite a hoot to talk to and you'll love his anecdotes. But most of all he helps school leaders with what may be the most important task, (and he says all of his books are about this important task) HOW TO GET PEOPLE TO DO WHAT YOU WANT THEM TO DO. When it comes to names I trust in education, Danny Steele and Todd Whitaker are near the top of that list. They love people. They're passionate about learning. They're bold and don't hesitate to tell it like it is. Essential Truths for Teachers isn't a book about instructional practice. It's not about classroom management techniques, the best uses of technology, or assessment. This book is more of a manifesto. It's about the fundamental beliefs and values that teachers need to own in order to be successful. It's a quick and easy read. I have no affiliation and gain nothing from sales of this book, but I highly recommend it. What follows are 17 essential truths that every teacher in the world should hear. Happy New Year and Welcome to the Teaching by Reaching Podcast! In this episode, I want to shift the focus from the students to the teachers for a moment! If you are an administrator, I would encourage you to share this episode with your educator peeps! You can also download all 5 days of Refresh by clicking here.  And then, of course, you can share with the people who need a little bit of encouragement going into 2023!1. You are important and needed. Seems pretty cliche, but I think some of you may need to really get that in your mind and heart.  So to do that, I want you to think of 3 specific students you have had an impact on.  Write them down. How did you impact them?  How did they let you know that you had an impact on them? How did it make you feel to know that you impacted them?I love this Todd Whitaker quote so much I put it at the very beginning of my book – “The best thing about being a teacher is that it matters. The hardest thing about being a teacher is that it matters every day.” But just think – you were put in your students' lives for a reason – the students you have right now.  And they may be really difficult students, but the students who are taking the most out of you are probably the ones you can have the biggest impact on! 2. You are blessed to have met and to be in the lives of each of your students. You are blessed to have the opportunity to teach them.So...why are you thankful for your current students? Who's personality do you really love? What situations are some of your students going through right now that God intentionally put them with you because He knew you could take care of them while they are in school? What an honor to be a teacher.  Society doesn't always give credit to teachers, but you literally have the opportunity to shape lives every day – and for some of those lives, you may be the only point of love and security they know.  This is a big job, but what an honor! So when you get worn down, which you will, because it's hard to be that person day in and day out, remember that you are blessed to have had this calling, you are making an impact FAR beyond what you will ever see here on Earth, and your students are blessed to have you.#3: You get to have a job that you are passionate about! My sweet dad sold pipe for the pipeline for his entire career, and while he liked the people and the company he worked for, he couldn't stand what he did. He had no passion for selling pipe. He did it as a job.  He did it well and he was consistent, but he was just living for his days off and eventually retirement.  Thankfully, he got to enjoy a couple of years of retirement before he passed away, but I have thought many times how thankful I am that my work is actually my passion. My mom has journal entries that she wrote about me when I was 4 years old of setting up my "classrooms" with my stuffed animals and dolls. I have always been passionate about students and teaching, and I love to learn myself, so that goes hand in hand. I love to see students' faces light up, and to try something new, and to collaborate with other teachers.   Here's the flip side of that though, whenever you do something you're passionate about, you tend to take it more personally and invest more of yourself.  So you get tired.  When students don't respond the way you want them to, it keeps you up at night.  You get frustrated and angry, and want to control so much more of it because you love it, and you love them. So take a minute to remember (and you know I'm all about writing it down) why you are passionate about being a teacher…what fills you up when you are teaching? Why did you become a teacher?  What are you still

What You'll Find in this Podcast Episode with Frederick White The Labyrinth of Leadership, as Fredrick explains it, is a solicitation of ideas from leaders around the country--folks with “skin in the game.” Don't miss what Dr. White says about his personal take-away from the Labyrinth project. Listen to the language he uses, so important and grossly undervalued. Frederick talks about self-reflection as a universal need for leaders. It's all about finding the time. Dr. White tells us about the importance of defining the “end product.” This part is profound. He says that the greatest leaders are the ones who are willing to continue to grow, regardless of how much they have achieved. Joe asks Frederick to explain one of his recent tweets about celebrating small wins. Every school leader needs to hear this. Dr. White talks about the difference between goal setting and dream chasing. This alone is worth the listen. Be a dream chaser! You want to hear the part about failure being the struggle that we often need to grow. Frederick's butterfly story is awesome. Frederick mentions both Principal Kafele and Todd Whitaker as inspiration. Check out The Principal Project. Advice from Dr. White: pause and go for a walk. Just taking the time to walk and observe is powerful for peace, self-reflection, and a solid reminder of what we want and need. Frederick is striving for the most perfect environment he can provide. His reflection about this is great. To continue to grow, Frederick starts by never settling. He looks to be present with his teachers to learn from them. He mentions writing and researching as things that force him to continue to grow. By understanding one another's jobs and hardships, we can better serve one another. In this episode, we are talking with Dr. Zac Bauermaster, the principal of Kissel Hill Elementary. Together, we discuss: Why he got into administration His experiences from going from secondary to elementary Choosing what to focus on as a leader Putting people first, always ...and so much more! I really enjoyed this talk. I think you will too.     This episode is sponsored by Heinemann—the leading publisher of professional books and resources for educators—and their professional book, Four Essential Studies: Beliefs and Practices to Reclaim Student Agency by Penny Kittle and Kelly Gallagher. Four Essential Studies is based on the belief that secondary students can only be prepared for life after high school when we purposefully shift the decision-making in our classrooms over to them. By reimagining how we teach essay, poetry, digital composition, and sustain talk in book clubs, we can ignite student curiosity, independence, and decision-making skills. Penny and Kelly share the strategies and activities they use in their own classrooms over the course of each unit, and show us what is possible when we expect more than compliance from our students. Reports of teacher shortages have been a constant backdrop in the United States for several years now. Transformative principals typically don't have a problem finding new staff for all the reasons we've spoken about in this book. If you have a Vital Vision, communicate effectively, build positive relationships, and support your teachers, you'll find that there is an endless list of people who want to be part of your school. It's a natural byproduct of the things we have been talking about. You can have that, too. Hiring the best people for your school is vital. Todd Whitaker says that hiring may be the most important thing a principal does: “You can get a teacher more on board in 5 minutes in your interview than 5 years in your building.” It behooves us as principals to ask the best questions we can to find out if someone will be a good fit for our school. As Bill Daggett says, “Culture trumps strategy. Every. Single. Time.” When interviewing, you must find the best person you can. It is even acceptable to wait as long as you need to until you find that person. Sometimes, a person serving as a long term sub is better than a poor teacher. If you have ever hired the wrong person for a job, you know that is true. Just preparing to hire teachers is a multi-step process. Hiring is a year-round job, one that takes on different aspects at different times in the year. Hiring can be risky. Or rather, I should say, hiring is RISCHI (pronounced risky). Recruit Introduce Hire Screen Cultural fit Hire Introduce ![[How2be Figure 4.excalidraw]]![[how2be figure 5.excalidraw]] I like to see this as a three-circle Venn diagram because there is overlap in the areas. We'll dive into each of these areas shortly. It is also effective to think of this as a never-ending circle! Where you are regularly doing each of these activities. With teacher shortages that have plagued our industry for years being exacerbated by the pandemic, more than ever we need to take a serious step in hiring people effectively. A recent study by the Learning Policy Institute called “A Coming Crisis in Teaching: Teaching Supply, Demand, and Shortages in the U.S.,” shows that in 2021 the demand for new teachers would be 300,000 and the amount of teachers available would be less than 200,000. That's a projected shortage of 100,000 teachers! And that was in 2016, before the pandemic was even a thing. In 2021, we've had governments requesting retired teachers come back to take the load off of other teachers. Districts are offering signing bonuses and trying to attract teachers. While those may be nice, that's nothing compared to you implementing what you read in this book! Being a transformative principal is how we solve our teacher shortage. And I'm going to show you how to do recruit and hire amazing teachers. I've worked hard to include actionable advice for you here to make sure you can attract the top talent to your school and that they will want to stay there forever! But remember, they will come for the job but they will stay for the Vital Vision. Before we go any further, imagine for a moment what hiring process could look like in five years. In five years, you have very low turnover. It happens, but people want to stay at your school because it is such a great place. When there is turnover, and opportunities for new staff to come on board, you first make sure all your current people are in the correct places. Then, you get to take your pick from the people who you already know will be great at your school and invite them to join you. You have the perfect placement for them, and they already have friends at your school so you know they will be a good fit. Just imagine how powerful that would be for everyone. It's possible, and that's how transformative principals hire new staff. Why Fay School? - Well, they attract the kind of people that want to work in that environment. In this episode, we explore the best strategy for L&D to create and deploy leadership learning programs with a realistic reach and influence and what type of work the company's leaders have to do to adopt healthy leadership behaviors throughout the entire organization successfully.Guest: Andrei Postolache, Founder at Xeriously, leadership and soft skills consultant focused on the IT industry, author of "Fun & Fearless Leadership".Highlights:* Leadership is more nurture than nature; virtually anyone can develop their leadership skills.* Leaders come in all shapes and sizes: charismatic, quiet, deliberative, introverted; not every leadership style works in every situation.* Companies can support leadership development through formal and informal learning interventions and opportunities. Most companies will settle on a hybrid approach.* Formal leadership programs are most necessary when a company is trying to reset its values and kickstart a new leadership journey.* It takes months and even years for a company to see significant lasting changes in its leadership culture. This is especially true for large companies or situations where a radical culture change is needed. A relevant example is Nokia's failure to change its culture before running out of time and resources.* A problem with leadership programs is that they are not persistent enough and not integrated with the rest of the culture.* The organization leaders' task is to show to employees that they're consistently embodying, promoting, and supporting a change for the better.* Cutting corners on culture will send the wrong message to employees.* Improvements in leadership are hard or sometimes impossible to measure objectively. It's mostly a matter of observing, over time, if positive changes in culture are noticeable by both leaders and employees.* L&D should be part of the leadership team and take part in the decision-making process when deciding to implement new programs.* L&D does the bulk of the work of understanding the organization, creating leadership development strategies, planning activities, and creating/curating learning content.* The leadership team, through its example, can make or break the success of any leadership development initiative.* Having the right kind of culture and leadership mentality in the company is the number one job of the CEO.* "The culture of a company is defined by the worst things leadership is willing to tolerate." - found in "School Culture Rewired" by Steve Grunaert and Todd Whitaker, as well as in a podcast episode on How to Build an Inclusive Workplace by Adam Grant. How to start developing leadership learning programs:1. Define the vision of the intended to-be leadership behaviors you plan to develop.2. Break down the newly defined vision into values, then competencies and skills.3. Create learning opportunities to promote and develop these skills.4. Start with a pilot, then showcase the results to leadership. The company's leadership team is an internal customer of L&D, alongside learners.5. Arm yourself with patience, as leadership development is a long-term endeavor. To join the conversation or get in touch, reach out to Liz Stefan on LinkedIn or email liz[at]niftylearning.io.

Dr. Whitaker delivers a powerful and funny interview with keen insight on how to maintain poise and focus by keeping learning at the forefront of all of our decisions as principal and teacher leaders. What You'll Find In This Episode with Todd Whitaker Todd's insight on how people act and react during crises is enlightening. His comment, “people always look to leaders but in times of change they stare” is spot on. He reminds us that the difference that we can make in our schools and districts always resides within the people. He candidly reveals that a crisis exposes weakness and that certain people have the skills to figure it out, while others don't. Todd tells us to stop being defensive. COVID19 revealed that schools are needed more than ever. Our purpose is to make a difference, that simple. Embrace it and believe it! He spends time talking about our best teachers and their willingness to ask others for help. This deeply resonated with us as we often discuss the power of a #learningculture. You don't want to miss how he describes how some people use their moods as a weapon and that the reward for negative people is that we never ask them to do anything. Todd talked about Twitter--how the knowledge of one becomes the knowledge of all. He takes a few minutes to illustrate the difference between a leader teaching and a leader telling and how it diffuses disagreement. His example of everyone “getting a trophy these days” and how it creates a scapegoat mentality is something that you want to hear, possibly more than once. His explanation of the difference between placing blame and embracing responsibility is powerful. Todd talks about learning from great people by finding the sharpest people in the room and spending time with them versus any mediocre person he might come across. Again, Todd shares an incredible story about a principal's goal and what she can control. We spend an enormous amount of time on the concept of improving schools and education in general, and he tells us plainly: hire better people or improve the ones you have. How he breaks down superstars, backbones, and mediocres will empower any principal leader. What doesn't Todd believe anymore? Tune in and find out. You won't be disappointed. When I started Teach Me, Teacher in 2016, I did so with the goal to talk to great educators in my building. Season 1 of the podcast was entirely made up of the teachers I knew, and a cheap USB mic I plugged into my Mac. Today, we have featured some of the top minds in education, such as Donalyn Miller, Kelly Gallagher, Hamish Brewer, Todd Whitaker, and Kim Bearden (among others.) To add to this list in a major way, and to celebrate 200 episodes, I had the privilege of sitting down with Eric Weinstein—one of the major voices in the intellectual spaces of the internet. Eric Weinstein is an American commentator, the managing director of Thiel Capital, and host of The Portal podcast. His story, and his son's story, about being constantly overlooked, punished, and mentally abused by a system that is supposed to educate everyone, is powerful. It is a story we can all learn from, use to inform our own practices, and advocate for a better tomorrow in our schools. Drawing on the parallel between iatrogenic harm (the harm caused inadvertently by the process of treatment), and what happens when educators make wrong decisions that hurt students, Eric makes his case for looking at educational malpractice through a lens of edugenics (harm caused inadvertently in the process of teaching.) At the heart of this talk, is an honest look at what the brightest kids suffer through in school, and how many schools do not serve the neurodiverse in meaningful ways. This 2 hour discussion goes into both our histories, how they look similar and different, and how the many problems in education today may be the driving force for meaningful change from those who care the most... TEACHERS.     This episode is sponsored by Heinemann—the leading publisher of professional books and resources for educators—and their professional book, Risk. Fail. Rise. A Teacher’s Guide to Learning From Mistakes by Colleen Cruz. You’ve likely heard the adage, ‘Everyone makes mistakes.’ But knowing why we make mistakes can help us learn from them and improve situations once we’ve made them. In Risk. Fail. Rise. teachers will learn how to address their own teaching mistakes, model with their own mistake-making, and improve their responses to others’ mistakes. Colleen Cruz shares what research says on mistakes as part of learning and what that means for teaching. If we can create school cultures where we talk honestly about mistakes, then we can grow and create opportunities for children to grow in all the ways they deserve. And we deserve those opportunities too. Risk. Fail. Rise. is available as a book and ebook. Look for the audiobook in early 2021. To learn more visit Heinemann.com.

I remember my first year of teaching all too well. It was an amazing year, but one that was regularly filled with questions, fear, and second guesses. And, to be completely truthful, there were times when I thought maybe I'd made a career mistake. Times when I doubted my effectiveness as an educator because a lesson didn't go as planned or the overall behavior in my class was less than pleasing. Turns out, I was an effective educator. Also, I'm not the only one that feels those same first year thoughts. Educators entering the profession now have another resource to through in their toolkit. It is a book titled Your First Year: How to Survive and Thrive as a New Teacher. It was co-authored by Todd Whitaker, Madeline Good, and Katherine Whitaker. Today on Anchored in Education, Katherine Whitaker has graciously agree to join us to talk more about this amazing book. Don't think that since you are past your first year that this can't help you out. I've read Your First Year multiple times throughout my career and never during my actual first year—it wasn't available then.  After listening, head over to www.escottengland.com to find the show resources and read more about Katherine and find a link to her book, Your First Year.

This is deeply personal but can really save lives. What is your school district doing to educate students, staff, parents and the community about bullying? Every month should be 'Bullying Awareness Month', and I wanted to create a free audio recording of my popular ebook resource for educators, parents and students to help out when  a bully steps into someone's life, What Everyone Needs to Know About Bullying. So... that's what I did! This episode of the Wired Educator Podcast is me reading my eBook. I wanted this to be available so students, parents, educators and anyone could listen to it on the bus, in the car, at lunch, on a walk, workout, or doing chores with their headphones on. This is deeply personal but can really save lives. Please listen and share this out. I will update this book annually, as I have done for the past few years with the latest information and help. I have created a free resource you can download titled, What Everyone Needs to Know About Bullying. I hope you will share it with everyone you can. I believe it delivers a message that many need to hear and practice. The bottom line is this: The opposite of bullying is leadership. We need to teach and train students to be better leaders online and off. It's that simple. Everyone talks about the importance of leadership, but few, very few, take the time to teach it. Listen to this podcast. This is what I want everyone to know about bullying. Dr. Carrie Rose is a Transformational Learning Expert, Entrepreneur, and Internet Marketing Influencer who was named one of Huffington Post's Must-Follow Women Entrepreneurs in 2017.   She holds an Ed.D in Educational Leadership from the University of Central Florida, wrote her doctoral dissertation on Professional Development, and is best known for developing the innovative teaching strategies and methodology that are becoming an industry standard for internet marketing and online education.   Dr. Rose offers a unique insight grounded in unparalleled research in how the human brain connects with content – and the necessary marketing processes to engage any audience.   I really wanted to know what made Dr. Rose so fascinated that she became one of the internet's foremost education experts, and the answer will probably surprise you.   Witnessing a traumatic event at the age of four caused Dr. Rose to develop selective mutism, meaning she didn't speak for the better part of six years. At the same time, she had dyslexia, and the combination of those two circumstances resulted in her not being able to read when she entered third grade.   One remarkable teacher, Mrs. Taylor, helped Dr. Rose transform from “this shell of a human being to the highest standardized test scorer that school had seen, in one year.”   Wow.   In the process, Dr. Rose learned the powerful impact one human being can have on another, if they care, give it all of their heart, and know the right strategies to use.   Because while the best teaching methodologies are important and effective, it's the relationships we form that really have the biggest impact. And that doesn't just mean relationships with others – the relationship with yourself is just as important.   “Love is this resonance, it's this frequency, and it feels the same leaving as it does coming in.”   If you pay attention, you'll notice that offering love to a stranger, or even just offering love to yourself, makes you feel the same as having received it from someone else.   So, have you offered your love to anyone today? It could have a profound impact.   --     Resources: Learn more at http://www.drcarrierose.com/ (drcarrierose.com) Want to create your own course? This episode is going to rock your world because we go deep into leadership … especially how to create great teams.   I admire so many things about Steve, but can you imagine when you were in high school ... if you created your own skateboard from scratch? what if you went on monthly skating, snowboarding or surfing trips? is there anything better than going on an over night trip with your high school peers … snowboarding for hours and writing the best personal essay ever for college?   Bio   Steve Larosiliere, is the President of STOKED, an award winning youth development program voted to the NY 100 (100 most innovative businesses in NY). Steve has been named Social Entrepreneur of the Year by the National Black MBA, Honored as a Hometown Hero, and given a Community Impact Award. His work has appeared in the New Yorker Magazine, ESPN, Huffington Post, Nylon Magazine, Fuel TV, Bloomberg, Wall Street Journal, and Transworld Business.   Steve speaks worldwide on the subject of youth empowerment, social entrepreneurship, and closing the opportunity gap, and action sports at places such as Do Lectures, Creative Mornings, Nike, Bloomberg, The United Nations, and various universities. Prior to STOKED, Steve began his career with an independent marketing firm that he cofounded working with clients such as Sony Music, Reader’s Digest, and Rock the Vote.   In this episode you will learn: trust … trust … trust you’re doing the universe a disservice if you’re playing small transactional vs transformative leadership don’t underestimate the value of spending time with people what hiring the wrong person does to an organization the reason you need coaching and mentors the story of starting STOKED the 1st step of leadership is self-awareness how to teach life skills through action sports learning happens in the classroom … development happens outside the classroom   Resources   Stoked website   Join the Stoked Igniters!   I did and you should too!   No more prisons   Losing my virginity   Connect   Email   FB   LinkedIn   Twitter   Insta   Do you need accountability?
