Discussing Arizona State Sun Devils basketball's first win of 2022-2023 vs Tarleton State

There's no better way to start off your season than with a win, even if it was one full of flaws that need to be corrected sooner rather than later. That is exactly the case for Arizona State Sun Devils basketball following the team's 2022-2023 season-opener against Tarleton State. A 62-59 final was played as close as the box score indicates, with the Sun Devils shooting just 33.9% as a team and under 50% from the free-throw line. This game could've been a much more comfortable win if they shot better, but it also could've been a loss had the defense not played as well as it did. Head coach Bobby Hurley wasn't thrilled by the win and neither were his players, but at least the team is starting off 2022-2023 on the right foot. Tune in to this edition of the Locked On Sun Devils podcast as host Richie Bradshaw discusses all the things that went right and wrong for the Arizona State Sun Devils basketball victory, including the debuts of transfers like Frankie Collins and the return of Marcus Bagley, plus what the team needs to continue building upon moving forward. Discussing Arizona State Sun Devils football's loss to the UCLA Bruins and why the fans matter

The Arizona State Sun Devils football team was never supposed to beat the #UCLA12 Bruins football program, but that didn't stop them from playing their hearts out. In a 50-36 defeat for the Sun Devils, we feel incredibly deflated about the team moving forward. Arizona State Sun Devils football needs to win out in order to be bowl eligible for the 2022 season now sitting at 3-6, but that's not what should be on our minds. No, instead of wondering what the Sun Devils need to do to win football games, host Richie Bradshaw issues a challenge to Sun Devils fans, students, alumni, and the like: Commit yourself to this team. Nobody likes to lose, but if you think that actively quitting on the team is helping anything, it's not. We are just a few short days away from tip-off to the start of the 2022-2023 college basketball season for Arizona State Sun Devils basketball and that means it's time to set some expectations. Should Sun Devils fans be excited about this year's team or should they be giving up already? While there are tons of reasons to be excited about the team ranging from the return of Marcus Bagley to the next full season of D.J. Horne to some incoming transfers and final seasons from some of the team's leading seniors, there remains one small caveat holding us back - Bobby Hurley. With just three winning seasons and one NCAA Tournament appearance to his name in seven seasons, year eight will be his most crucial yet, and failing to make waves could result in his termination from the program. Why the key for Arizona State Sun Devils football to beat UCLA Bruins football ID NOT traditional

More often than not, the better team wins the game. More often than not, the team who executes better wins the game. More often than not, good triumphs over evil. Well, not this time. As the newly ranked #12 UCLA Bruins football team travels down to Tempe, Arizona this weekend to face the faltering 3-5 Arizona State Sun Devils football squad, it's time to start embracing a supervillain mentality if you're Arizona State Sun Devils football. The Bruins may be the better team for 364 days of 2022, but they won't be on Saturday, November 5, 2022. No, instead the Arizona State Sun Devils football team is going to need to come out with a "we're better than you" mentality, even though it isn't true and everyone knows it. Host Richie Bradshaw knows this, but he still thinks it could be possible by simply believing it and manifesting it, and speaking it into existence. After handing out some game balls for the top performers during Arizona State Sun Devils football's victory over the Colorado Buffalos football team, it's time to sit back and assess what we saw and learned from this game. As we look at what went right, the vast majority falls on the offensive side of the ball. Quarterback Trenton Bourguet excelled in his first career college start and his weapons like Elijah Bader and Jalin Conyers were absotluely humming in rhythm while running back Xazavian Valladay continued to run his way through opposing defenses. Conversely, the defense's efforts in this game could have been better. A Colorado Buffalos offense that had scored 20 points in a game just twice this year went off for 34 and while it was ugly more often times than not, there are still several attributes that must be improved. For just the third time this season, it is Victory Monday for Arizona State Sun Devils football! The Sun Devils went up to Boulder, Colorado to take on the struggling Colorado Buffalos football team and walked away victorious to the tune of a high-scoring 42-34 final. While there wasn't much defense being played, there was plenty of offensive firepower brought on for Arizona State, including a 435-yard, three-touchdown performance from Trenton Bourguet in his first career start. Bourguet spread the bell around to several playmakers like emerging star Elijah Badger while the tight ends Jalin Conyers and Messiah Swinson got more involved than they had all year with the former catching three touchdowns. Xazavian Valladay also continued his dominance to the tune of 118-yards and three scores of his own. Truly, when head coach Shaun Aguano said that things were going to be different moving forward, he meant it. After a frustrating 2-5 start to the 2022 season led by transfer quarterback Emory Jones, head coach Shaun Aguano and the Arizona State Sun Devils football program decided to move on to Trenton Bourguet as the team's starting quarterback and see what the fourth-year man could do as a starter for the first time in his college career. Bourguet did not disappoint, as he led the Sun Devils to a 42-34 victory over the Colorado Buffalos football team behind his 435 passing yards and three touchdown passes. Bourguet orchestrated an offense that felt much more confident in itself and more adept passing than it has at any other point this season. Bourguet had initially stepped in for an injured Jones against the then-ranked #21 Washington Huskies and tossed three touchdowns in a 45-38 upset win for the Sun Devils. The performance created a quarterback controversy for Arizona State Sun Devils football, but it ultimately led to this game and a great performance from the Tucson, Arizona native. Host Richie Bradshaw takes a moment to assess this performance from Bourguet individually on this edition of the Locked On Sun Devils podcast. When Jayden Daniels departed Tempe, Arizona for Baton Rouge, Louisiana, the Arizona State Sun Devils football team was sent into a tailspin. Between Trenton Bourguet and Paul Tyson, there was next to no optimism for the Sun Devils' offense following spring practices. But then, Emory Jones, a starting quarterback for the Florida Gators in 2021, announced his intentions to transfer to Arizona State University and the perception of the offense drastically changed. While it still wasn't seen as some elite-caliber offense with Jones at the helm, we felt a little more confident that Arizona State Sun Devils football could score some points. That hasn't been the case nearly enough this year and now we are wondering if the Emory Jones era of Arizona State Sun Devils football should come to an end or not. At 2-5 on the year, the season feels all but over for ASU, but does that mean closing the book on Jones's tenure as the starting quarterback, even if just for one week? Losing always stinks, but losing in the fashion that the Arizona State Sun Devils football program lost to the Stanford Cardinal this week is infuriating. In a low-scoring 15-14 final in favor of the Cardinal, the Sun Devils couldn't get anything going. After a quick 14-6 in the first half, Arizona State would get shutout in half number two and lose despite only allowing three more field goals. Stanford wouldn't score a touchdown all day and yet ASU still lost. Was it the ineptitude of the offense? Was it the defense's inability to force shorter drives? Was it coaching? Perhaps it was all of it, but this loss makes it very hard not to point the blame at individuals like Emory Jones. But that changed when the Sun Devils took down the then-ranked #21 Washington Huskies. Now coming off a bye week, this feels like a new Arizona State Sun Devils football program. Fresh slate now. 0-0. Starting things off is a trip to Palo Alto, California to take on the Stanford Cardinal football program led by quarterback Tanner McKee and head coach David Shaw. The Cardinal are also just 2-4 on the season, but they're playing with the determination to show that they should be a .500 football team and not one with a losing record thanks to a miracle play vs. the Oregon State Beavers. It feels like it was ages ago, but the Arizona State Sun Devils football team is coming off a win against the previously #21 ranked Washington Huskies football team, but it didn't come without a price. Starting quarterback Emory Jones went down early in the game and Trenton Bourguet came in to save the day and pull off a massive college football upset for the Sun Devils. Bourguet was masterful with three touchdown passes against a good Washington Huskies' defense; it was the kind of quarterback play that fans have been waiting for the whole season, as Jones was incapable of providing any stellar quarterbacking play up to this point in the year. Jones was sidelined for that game; however, he is back to full health and is resuming his role as the Sun Devils' starting quarterback ahead of the upcoming game against the Stanford Cardinal football team. A bye week for Arizona State Sun Devils football was either perfectly or terribly timed, depending on who you asked. The bye came right after a crucial Arizona State Sun Devils football win over the then #21 Washington Huskies football program. Some believed the team would've been better off continuing to play on a winning streak, while others believed they needed to go into a week of rest off a win and feeling good moving forward. Regardless, there are still plenty of things we want to see from this Arizona State Sun Devils football team for the final six games of the 2022 season. It starts with coaching, where we hope the offense commits an offensive identity to the strength of either Emory Jones or Trenton Bourguet. Speaking of offense, can we find a way to get Daniyel Ngata, Elijah Badger, and the tight ends Messiah Swinson and Jalin Conyers more involved? Defensively, we need better pass rushing and more turnovers, but seeing any growth is a win for us. If nothing else, then let's keep giving more roles to Khoury Bethley. Assessing Arizona State Sun Devils football and its quarterback conundrum

The quarterback situation for Arizona State Sun Devils football was thrown into flux following the conclusion of the 2021 season. All signs pointed to Jayden Daniels returning to the program for his senior season right up until he decided to transfer from the program and head to Baton Rouge, LA, and play for the LSU Tigers football program. The moment Daniels left, everything fell into madness. Suddenly, the incredibly unproven Trenton Bourguet and transfer from Alabama Paul Tyson were expected to be the guys and with the expectations that they could continue Arizona State Sun Devils football's winning ways. When that didn't appear to work, the team brought in former Florida Gators quarterback Emory Jones via the NCAA Transfer Portal and things felt a bit better. While Jones has been up and down in 2022, he's still provided the stability that we were nervous would not be present for the position in 2022. However, Jones went down with an injury in week six against the Washington Huskies football team, and the aforementioned Bourguet was thrust into the offense and expected to help win this game. Well, that is EXACTLY what happened following a terrific performance from Bourguet. Now on a bye week with time for Jones to get healthy again but also for Bourguet to continue getting first-team reps in while Jones is on the mend, what should Arizona State Sun Devils football do regarding their starting quarterback moving forward? Chryst was the head coach of the Wisconsin Badgers football team from 2015 up until week five of the 2022 college football season. Chryst never had a losing season and had just one year with fewer than eight wins. That year, 2020, was shortened to seven games due to quarantine protocols. His reputation within the realm of college football is well known and highly praised. Surely, he won't be without a job for long with plenty of options out there for him to explore. Would the Arizona State Sun Devils football program be a good fit for the long-tenured head coach of Wisconsin? Host Richie Bradshaw certainly thinks so. Tune in to this edition of the Locked On Sun Devils podcast and listen to what we have to say about Chryst potentially coming down to Tempe, Arizona to be the Arizona State Sun Devils football team's next head coach for 2023. The Arizona State Sun Devils football program dropped its fourth-straight game this past Saturday against the #6 ranked USC Trojans football program in Los Angeles, 42-25. While usually, a loss like this would feel like a major setback for your program, it actually built more confidence than it destroyed. The Sun Devils entered this game as 25-point underdogs according to most odds books and there was nobody in the world who would've taken Arizona State to pull off a miracle. While they ultimately did not, they still managed to put together a remarkably closer game than anticipated. A 42-25 loss does not do justice to those who actually watched the game and witnessed an offense that had the most life and drive that it seemingly has had for the entire season. It appears that these kids weren't kidding about feeling rejuvenated and ready to prove the doubters wrong under interim coach Shaun Aguano. While the Sun Devils didn't put a complete effort on both sides of the ball, there was certainly a ton to feel good about. Even host Richie Bradshaw, a firm believer in a loss is a loss, feels this is a loss with a BIG moral victory to celebrate. If it's not Aguano and you had to name a new coach TODAY, who would it be? What factor could deter head coaching candidates from Arizona State Sun Devils football ore - subpar recruiting or pending NCAA violations? Who are the head coach candidates no one is talking about? The easiest thing in the world for us to do when things are bad is to focus on the negatives. The Arizona State Sun Devils football team has been very bad, to put it politely, and fans and the like have had a hard time holding back their feelings for frustration towards the staff and the players. This podcast has been widely critical of the program, but that won't be the case today. Instead, host Richie Bradshaw celebrates some of the breakout stars for the Arizona State Sun Devils football team on this edition of the Locked On Sun Devils podcast. Players like Xazavian Valladay and Elijah Badger have stepped up big time in large roles for the offense and without them there would be very little positives on that side of the ball. The Arizona State Sun Devils football program has a lot to work on moving forward following a 1-3 start to the 2022 campaign and facing a road that has anything but guarantees moving forward. Following the firing of former head coach Herm Edwards, running backs coach Shaun Aguano was promoted to be the interim head coach and take on the massive responsibility of getting this Arizona State Sun Devils football team back on track. This feels like a seemingly impossible task, but it falls on Aguano regardless of whether it's fair or not. While the Arizona State Sun Devils football program was certainly not favored in this PAC-12 conference matchup against the then-#13 Utah Utes football, the way they were beaten was humbling, to put it softly. The Utes did anything and everything they wanted to do against the Sun Devils offensively, as the team controlled the game clock for over 35 minutes with a power run game and incredibly efficient passing on offense. Defensively, Utah was just as dominant in bringing down Emory Jones five times and picking the quarterback off twice. Considering Arizona State didn't score its lone touchdown until the fourth when the game was more than out of reach for the Sun Devils, it's fair to say that the Utes executed their game plan perfectly. Host Richie Bradshaw has some thoughts about this game and some frustration to put out there about the state of this team and its grim outlook moving forward. It is never too early to start dreaming about your perfect head coach when your team is searching for one. This is the predicament that Arizona State Sun Devils football fans find themselves in following the termination of Herm Edwards's position as head coach of the Arizona State Sun Devils football program. With Edwards gone, AD Ray Anderson has promoted running backs coach Shaun Aguano as the team's interim head coach, but that does anything but promise him the job for 2023. So, who could the Sun Devils fancy as their next head coach? Host Richie Bradshaw has a slew of names that come to mind ranging from superstar names like Deion Sanders to lesser-known guys like Todd Munken. Don't be surprised if the Sun Devils take a chance on a younger guy like Kenny Dillingham, but we could also see the return of former college head coaches like Tom Herman, Bill O'Brien, or even Matt Rhule if he is fired from the Carolina Panthers. Maybe Arizona State could swing someone established like Matt Campbell from Iowa State? They won't know until they try, but these are the guys Richie Bradshaw has in mind! To call Saturday's loss to the Eastern Michigan Eagles football program would be one of the greatest understatements in the history of Arizona State Sun Devils football. The Sun Devils were 20+ point favorites and had crushed another smaller program in NAU to start the season 40-3. Coming off a 34-17 loss to Oklahoma State, there was little reason to think that Arizona State was going to lay an egg against a small school like Eastern Michigan, but alas that is exactly what happened. The Sun Devils got taken behind the woodshed by Samson Evans and the Eagles and lost at home 30-21. The loss was so bad, in fact, that head coach Herm Edwards was relieved of his duties as early as Sunday afternoon. The Arizona State Sun Devils football team has now been put into flux and a seemingly endless free fall that will make this a tough season to get through. While we don't want to begin our "the end is nigh" chants on Mill Ave., there are a lot of important conversations that need to be had regarding the state and future of the Arizona State Sun Devils football program. Before we get there though, host Richie Bradshaw goes through what happened during the Sun Devils' loss to the Eagles on this edition of the Locked On Sun Devils podcast. In breaking news for Arizona State Sun Devils football - Herm Edwards has been relieved of his duties as the head coach of the program. Edwards, in just over four seasons with the Sun Devils, had a combined record of 26-20 with no losing seasons and a 1-2 bowl game record. Edwards entered the 2022 season on the hot seat following a massively underwhelming 2021 season in which Arizona State Sun Devils football was expected to compete for a PAC-12 conference title. ASU then underwent a massive and still ongoing investigation of recruiting violations under COVID-19 protocols. As if this wasn't enough, Edwards saw 16 players leave the program this offseason via the NCAA Transfer Portal and had to replace both of his coordinators within the last 12 months. Edwards's firing feels long overdue, but it nonetheless comes as a bit of a surprise. We are 24 hours away from kickoff for Arizona State Sun Devils football! It's week three of the 2022 season and the final game of the schedule before the Sun Devils begin PAC-12 conference play against some pretty talented teams including the Utah Utes and USC Trojans. But first, Arizona State needs to take care of business at home against the Eastern Michigan Eagles football program. The Eagles currently sit at 1-1 on the year, but this will be their first game of the season against a Power Five school, and the Sun Devils, despite a 1-1 start to the 2022 season, have shown the ability to be a rock-solid competitor. Eastern Michigan will be relying on its offense to put up points behind quarterback Taylor Powell's arm, but their starting quarterback and his weapons like Samson Evans and David Drummond have been inconsistent in their first two games of the year. That does not bode well for an Arizona State Sun Devils football defense that's playing with confidence and swagger behind the performances of Kyle Soelle, Nesta Jade Silvera, Chris Edmonds, and co. Defensively, the Eagles will have their hands full with a unit lacking a true difference-maker while the Sun Devils have superstars like Xavavian Valladay ready to dominate. If Emory Jones can take his next step forward as a passer and firmly establish some chemistry with his weapons, then the Sun Devils may finally be able to field a complete offense capable of scoring in more ways than one. There's always room to make changes and fix flaws on your team. Quite frankly, there's never a wrong time to do this. That's why we aren't afraid to come up with "fixes" to Arizona State Sun Devils football even just two games into the 2022 season. Already there are some significant flaws with this Sun Devils football team and the fixes for them are much simpler than one may think. Offensively, the protection from the offensive line needs improvement. An uptick in play from the offensive line can create a massive improvement to the offense entirely; more so than you might think. Defensively, the Sun Devils need to start finishing their plays. This is especially true in the sack department, where Arizona State has yet to record a single sack on the season. The team's inability to sack the quarterback will be the Achille's heel of this defense if it doesn't get fixed soon. And then, of course, enough is enough with the penalties! Assessing celebrations, improvements, and goals for Arizona State Sun Devils football after loss to Oklahoma State

While our first instinct following a loss is to be pessimistic, there are still things we need to celebrate that the team did right. In the case of Arizona State Sun Devils football following a 34-17 loss to the #11 ranked Oklahoma State Cowboys in Stillwater, Oklahoma, we would be quick to point out the decisions that led to the loss, such as the poor pass protection, the inability to record sacks, and even more so the frustration that was the week's game script. However, we need to recognize some of the things the Sun Devils did well during this game, such as running the football (again), having some secondary targets in the passing attack step up when no one else could, and quite frankly giving this defense the respect it deserves for a performance far better than the box score indicates. We take all this into account these celebrations and improvements needed here and host Richie Bradshaw comes up with three goals for Arizona State Sun Devils football as the team prepares to return home for a game against the Eastern Michigan Eagles this weekend on this edition of the Locked On Sun Devils podcast. We all knew going into Saturday's game in Stillwater, Oklahoma against the Oklahoma State Cowboys football program was going to be anything but a cakewalk for the Arizona State Sun Devils football program. The Cowboys were one win away from a Big-12 title a year ago and entered the game as the #11 ranked team in the nation. The Sun Devils needed to be on their A-game if they planned on pulling off a major upset. Unfortunately, that did not end up being the case, as Arizona State dropped the game 34-17 to Oklahoma State. It was a frustrating loss, to say the least. The offense was unable to capitalize on the numerous chances that its defense gave it which in turn left the defense out to dry and at that point, there's only so much an exhausted defense can do against a high-powered offense captained by Spencer Sanders. Whether it was the inability to score points or convert third downs on offense or the defense's inability to finish sacks and avoid its prowess for dumb penalties, Arizona State ultimately sealed its own fate in a very winnable game.
